About this property

This is a beautiful family-friendly historic mansion on a private lake

Built in 1775, this 10,000 square foot mansion with 10 beautiful acres of land provides for a luxurious vacation. Amenities include a private lake, swimming pool, tennis court, jogging and biking trail, children's playground, nature trail and more. The inside of the house includes a full bar, two large children's play rooms, a greenhouse, an office, a library, theater, parlor, and formal and informal dining areas. This old home is maintained by a cleaning company, property management and landscaping service to preserve its history. Guests should not expect a brand new facility or a 5 star hotel. Guests should look elsewhere for that type of stay such as a large hotel chain. Guests appreciate this home for charm, space, history and amenities.

The house sleeps up to 20. However, approval and additional payment is required for groups of more than 9. Since larger groups do require more maintenance of this historic property, there is a $30 per day charge per guest after the 9th guest.

This is a large house. There are 14 beds. The second floor has 4 Queens, 2 Kings, and 2 singles in 4 large bedrooms and 2 smaller bedrooms. The third floor has two bedrooms with a total of one bunk bed (2 singles), 2 singles and one King sized bed. On the 1st floor we can set up a temporary bed which has been useful for those who cannot climb stairs. Cots may be available. There are 7 bathrooms (One is in the pool house). (Due to a VRBO glitch, the description on this homepage indicates only 2 bedrooms but there are in fact 8 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms.)

Plenty of space and fun quirks
Our group really enjoyed the stay at Boxwood. There were tons of different rooms and space for us all. Some of the older family members really enjoyed learning about the history of the property as well.

Great big house
We had a great stay. The house is well maintained and was big enough to allow 9 adults and 1 toddler enough space to retreat from one another.

Perfect place for our weekend
We were in town for a wedding, seven of us. We had plenty of space to get ready and stay. Some of our family came over the day after the wedding and we enjoyed the property, the space, and the rooms accommodated some additional people to stay the night. It is an older home with amazing charm and awesome for group photos. Like they said, not a 5 star hotel but it makes up for it in amenities, location and space. We loved our stay.

A great house in need of desperate love
First, the good stuff; the location is enchanting. The house itself is full of history and charm - there was even a secret staircase! Everyone in our group was enchanted by the lower level of the original house. From the cozy study to the spacious living room and all the other unique rooms, the house had character. And if you're into photography, you'll love how photogenic the place is. So many perfect places to take pictures. We had a large group of 25 people and the house accommodated us comfortably. There was plenty of bedding for everyone, plenty of refrigerator space, and more than enough cookware to prepare meals for a crowd.Parking wasn't a problem either - there was more than enough room for all of our vehicles. We visited in April when it was still a little too cold to use the pool area. Now for the not so great parts. The house is clearly aging and in need of some TLC. There are visible signs of water damage in certain areas, and some rooms had a noticeable musty smell. We also encountered a fair amount of bugs - stink bugs, spiders, etc. (This was disclosed in the listing, so it wasn't a surprise, but it's worth repeating). Dead bugs piled up in window ledges. There was peeling paint and general wear and tear in several parts of the house, which detracted from the overall experience. The list of beds on the listing isn't entirely accurate either. The listing pictures are also several years out of date, but are mostly accurate.

Great for Group Gathering
The location is as advertised - an older home with lots of space and great amenities. We loved having the pool, hot tub, grill, ample kitchen space and beds that allowed for this to be a great place to spend the day with friends and also a great home base before and after a day out.

Family Reunion
This place rocks! Our family gathered for my parents’ 60th wedding anniversary, 9 adults, 8 teens and teens. All age groups loved the place. The grounds are impressive and vast. The house is old, like the description says, but it has character and a lot of space both inside and out. Multiple cooking areas, so no problem making meals for large groups. The owner was diligent in answering questions before we arrived, and there was an onsite property manager to answer questions and make minor repairs when needed. All family members said we would rent this place again.

Memorial for our Mother
We stayed at the house Thurs-Sun and had a memorial get together on Friday after burying our mother at the Washington Crossing Cemetery. The house was perfect for what we needed. The grounds were beautiful and everything was great. Such an historical house with character, we were so happy to find it on vrbo! Peter

Great house. Fully stocked! Wonderful towpath, tennis courts and lake. The kitchen was perfectly organized for us to cook together and enjoy family time. Beautiful art and interesting artifacts everywhere! The big room was the best hangout spot and the one crawling baby learned to master that one step like a champ! It was grand!!

A Magical Experience
This was the perfect venue for us. It was so spacious that our extended family actually did not use at least 1/3 of the space. There are large living areas where we could all gather together and eat together. And then there were very spacious private places where we could be by ourselves outside of earshot of everyone else. The huge windowed walls of the main gathering room gave us a panoramic view onto the beautiful property with water and bridges everywhere we looked. We saw large fish, deer families, and a beautiful soaring blue heron who landed close enough to intrigue our toddlers.

It was fine. The big tv did not work. The outside entrance toward the pool needs a railing. Fell onto the cement. The toilet on second floor needs service, to strength it.

Summerfest 2023
Beautful facilities with all the amenities for an active teenage group. We took advantage of all that was available: paddleboats, tennis court, basketball, pool and sauna. Best of all, they all had their own bed rooms...7 boys...to hook up the individual game consoles. Kitchen and dining areas were fully stocked with all necessities. We were able to have a movie night with popcorn and smores. Overall it was an experience they all will remember. Thanks to our gracious host, Eric and Greg, maintenance, for checking on us and making sure all was ok. We would gladly return and highly recommend this property for all.

A Spacious Historic House
I stayed with two friends and family at the property for a college reunion. The pool saved us when the heat index hit 100 degrees. The property is clean and well-kept. Some in our party did not have cars and I would recommend a car if you stay at the property. The property is an oasis in the middle of a densely populated area. As an 18th century house, the layout is unique and I would also recommend looking at the bedroom layout if you plan for a large group. The history of the American Revolution is at the doorstep of the property if you have forgotten the details of Washington’s crossing of the Delaware.

A Wonderful Place for a Family Reunion
This was an amazing place for a large family reunion! We all came to this Trenton home from several states and just fell in love with the home. So much history to explore. We were given a full tour upon arrival, and the owner, who was so helpful and couldn't have been nicer, checked in with us throughout our stay. Each room in the house has its own unique personality, and the place plenty of bathrooms, big open spaces and beds to spare. We loved the long table off the kitchen that could accommodate all of us to regroup for meals. There was so much to do there with games, big screen TVs, 2 full kitchens, tennis and basketballs courts, pools, hot tubs, several boats, fire pit, large pool house, library, bicycles and hiking. We had big plans to tour Philadelphia and Trenton, but honestly, we were having so much fun at the house we didn't want to go anywhere else. We would come back in a heartbeat and recommend it to anyone looking for a lovely, historic place to stay that has it all. Many thanks to Eric and his team for making this such a memorable visit.

Incredible stay for our large group
Eric was a great host who was helpful and transparent in accommodating not only our large group staying in the house, but single day guests visiting for the afternoon. He was up front about all costs, security deposits, and requests for keeping this classic home in ship-shape. The house itself is enormous and slept 21 of us with ease. It also provided ample room to eat, sleep, play, or lounge. We loved having the pool separated from the main home with a large pool-house nearby as an additional bathroom, kitchen, and dining area. Any downsides to the home are again very transparently laid out in the description. Yes, it is almost 250 years old, so it's a bit creaky with some broken doorknobs or screens, but for the most part we found the charm of the history of the house outweighed those minor issues. Yes, there are some pests. We killed a few spiders and found some gross stuff in the closed hot tub (the other one worked fine). We also got some mosquito bites, but bug spray solved most of our problems the second day. All in all, we really enjoyed ourselves here and definitely plan to come back in the future. Part of it is that the house itself is great for large groups. The other part is a host who is accommodating and up front about expectations. Appreciate the stay, Eric!

Amazing experience - definitely recommend for large families!
My stay at Eric's Boxwood home was fantastic and enjoyable for my all of the guests that attended. We completely utilized all of the unique amenities that came with this property, including the pool, hot tub, tennis courts, and outdoor space. The house comes with so much history and it was intriguing to experience all of that with the decorations and furnishing. We also enjoyed the modern touches such as the well designed family room with a large 85" TV. The kitchen was very well stocked, and having two fridges was a huge pro for my family. Minor nitpick on the photos in the listing - There is 1 bedroom on the 2nd floor (entrance from the secret staircase) that's not part of the listing photos, and 1 bedroom on the 3rd floor where the single photo doesn't really show it off well. However, the host immediately clarified these bedrooms existed so it was not any problem for me.

Neglected Eye Sore
This property is largely neglected. Many things did not work or were not clean. Several people that were to stay with us opted for the Holiday Inn, instead. The property, too, has several other tenants in poorly kept apartments. Further, there are random old boats, a punching bag, and other random assorted items. It is very close to the road, as well. The property manager, Jeff, was excellent and responsive. The pool section is nice and it will be an enjoyable stay if the weather is nice. In general though, I this property is poorly kemp and dirty. The grill (from pre 2000's) was dirty as were cups etc. I would not recommend this property.

Just saying
The place is amazing and relaxing we were only company of 3 so we did not need much, however just saying since it is not mentioned the house is right on a main rd so the noise from trucks train and traffic never stops, also while sitting out the first night noticed cameras everywhere so we felt a little weird, again it might be for emergency reasons but you can never be your self like you would like since someone always watching. Also there is a family living in the house and when the place gets booked they move to the house next door so you really not in private as described. We wanted to do some laundry and when we open the dryer there were cloths in it so we decided not to use it still had a great time since all i wanted was a pool for few days, would i come here again? For sure not.

Much to do here
My mom and my aunt get all of us together every two years. In our group we were ages 2 to 91! We all had a wonderful time at this amazing property. It is well worth exploring all of this home’s many features and personalities. Many of us especially enjoyed the pool. We were lucky to have great weather. Perhaps the best part of our visit was our time at the ‘informal’ dinning room table (and the outdoor table, too). Extra chairs allowed us to sit together, to linger over meals, to chat over breakfast and hang out with our coffee or wine. The house blends history with the modern world. It is an experience. “A great place for Hide-and-Seek,” said the 4-year-old. The giant TV and spacious TV room became a wonderful theater for a few of us to present our photos and recent global travels. There is a cute old mill next door, too….! Access to the (20 mile!?) towpath trail along the canal should not be forgotten. And a tennis court! Our group took advantage of it all. The giant turtle in the pond was yet another highlight. There is much to do here, including paddle boating in the pond. Thank you for sharing your home with us. We had a very fun and memorable time together!
