We are centrally located in Sheffield, AL just five minutes from Muscle Shoals, Florence and Tuscumbia. Collectively known as the Shoals, we are known for our two Robert Trent Jones golf courses, the second largest locking dam in the world at the Wilson dam, the home place of both father of the Blues W.C. Handy and Helen Keller. Handy is celebrated by an annual music festival in July and Keller also celebrated with a festival in June. The Tennessee River brings in many bass fisherman and boaters. We also have one of the few Frank Lloyd Wright homes as a museum in Florence.

We can help direct you with your itinerary and point you toward fun things to do while you are here. Our kitchen is stocked with some basics in the event you wake up and need a snack.

Not as the pictures online!
Never received any check in instructions so had to ask about codes to get in. There were no chair pads on the few chairs on patio. No wicker chairs or flowers and no grill as in the pictures. Messaged Clay about these and he said they did not have any and then asked if we would feed the cat! The next day he did bring some pads for the chairs and 2 small Webber grills that were rusted. The outside fire pit was in terrible shape and the furniture for it were too dirty to use. We were looking forward to a fire but could not have one because of its poor shape. There was a basket of snacks in the kitchen but most were expired! There was a lot of food left in the frig upstairs and downstairs as well as both freezers. There was mold in the downstairs shower and the downstairs smelled like old cooked food. There was a several personal items (bicycle, suitcase, etc) left around. It was obvious that he just left the house he lives in for us for the time we rented for and not in very good condition. This is all too bad because the view is awesome. Clay was attentive to my txts during the stay. Be warned, this house is not as described!

Great place to relax and enjoy the view!
We spent two nights to enjoy the sights around Muscle Shoals (of course the music studios) but our favorite was the Birthplace of Helen Keller. Great tour of her home and the story of her and Anne Sullivan. The house was extremely quiet and I enjoyed some book reading.

Lovely older home
This property is an older home on a fabulous lot. The home sits high on a bluff overlooking the Tennessee River. The view is spectacular! The home is an older home with good bones. The inside is a bit dated, but functional. The beds were comfortable. One bathroom is quite large, the second bath is smaller with a small shower. A larger person would struggle with using the shower. Overall, the home was comfortable and met our needs for the few days we were there. And the view cannot be beat!

Dated
I was unable to make the trip but my girlfriends had a few issues-the home was not ready for check-in, the dishwasher was full of hats (not a typo), the kitchen was dated and needed - utensils, glasses, etc. the beds we're comfortable and the memories will last them a lifetime!!

Relaxing river view
Great place. Highly recommend. Close to many places to visit and enjoy. But best part is the house is on top of a cliff overlooking the Tennessee river. I could sit there for days enjoying the view. Questions were answered swiftly by Clay. Highlight was spending time with Alice, the outside kitty. Thank you Clay for a wonderful place.

Great resting spot
We really enjoyed our stay at the Music House, spending most of our time outside, enjoying the river views. Unfortunately we had a motorcycle malfunction and had to use the house as a sleeping spot to go all of the way to Louisiana and back to get our truck and trailer. But wonderful location to rest on our there and back up the Natchez Trace. We enjoyed our stay.

Great location
We really enjoyed our stay. The home is in a very convenient location for exploring the area. The view from the living room was spectacular, and to sit and enjoy my coffee in the morning was a wonderful way to start the day. Clay was very responsive to our needs and having the breakfast items there for us was a special touch. The bed was very comfortable. My husband was jazzed that so many famous musicians had stayed at that home. We look forward to staying there again in the future to explore the many different things the area has to offer.

Beautiful View, Great Accommodations!
The upstairs floor of the home we stayed in was absolutely perfect for our short weekend visit to the Muscle Shoals, Florence, Tuscumbia area. We enjoyed meeting Clay, the host. Very Nice and friendly. We went to the Rattlesnake Saloon to eat lunch and to Trow Bridges Ice Cream Parlor for Dessert. We rode out to the Wilson Dam Overlook afterwards and then over to McFarland Park, which is across the Tennessee River from the House we were staying in which was on a tall Bluff overlooking the River. The property was absolutely breathtaking. We all wanted to MOVE there! Thanks for everything, Clay! Brenda, Robert, Wanda & Gary P.S. We also loved meeting Alice the tortoise-shell Kitty. She was so sweet!

A Wonderful Weekend Getaway
This is a great place to stay, relax, and enjoy the river. The house is vintage and Clay is a wonderful property manager. Some great restaurants close to the property. Be sure to visit Cajun's and FloBama. After visiting the restaurants we would go back and relax and watch the river through a picture window . We will definitely will be back next year.

Music history
The view from the living room of the Tennessee River is terrific! We came to Muscle Shoals to tour all of the studios where so much music began. It was great to stay in Clay's place preceded by Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Bob Seger, Isaac Hayes, James Brown, and so many others.

Watching the river flow
This house was in a great location and very spacious. Located high above the Tennessee River it has a great view. At the end of a cul du sac it was peaceful and well kept. The owner( Clay) communicated with us in an outstanding manner and came by to make sure all was well once we had arrived. We would stay here again if we were in the area.

Peaceful, stress-free couple of days exploring the music history of Muscle Shoals and hiking in the area. The house was a welcome retreat at the end of the day; we watched boats go by, walked in the neighborhood, relaxed. Plan on coming back soon!

Indifferent
I am torn on what to say about our stay. I say this for a few reasons, the view was good/location was good, the house was clean, but I would say just surface clean and the shower/tub we used you were standing in ankle deep water. TWO MAIN REASONS I cannot give this a 5 star rating-- When we got there Clay was welcoming (note he does stay in the basement, which this is noted about the property). However, when we got there I asked about a coffee pot in which he said he had one and would get it to me. Well a couple days later while we were sleeping in the middle of the night he came upstairs and placed the coffee pot in the kitchen. It was just an unsettling feeling waking up in the morning and knowing that someone we don't know was walking around right outside of our room. Thankful for the coffee pot, but not the way it was delivered. The second reason I cannot give this a five star review is we needed to stay an extra day for work and when I asked if we need to pay him he said "yes"-- we gave him our credit card and he charged us way more than what we paid per night through VRBO. I reached out about this and he said it was a mistake and would "partially" refund us. It was a handful of days later and after a follow-up that it showed up. He still charged more than what VRBO did and I know that VRBO takes a percentage. We feel as though he took advantage of us paying him. Shame on me for not asking what he was going to charge or going through the app, I guess thats me being WAY too trusting, because we would have FOR SURE went to a hotel for one night if we would have known. So two notes if whoever is reading this does decide to stay, make sure you are okay with someone staying below you because there is not a lock between the basement and upstairs and ALWAYS go through the VRBO app when paying for an extra night. We stay in an average of 10-12 VRBO's a year, so I am definitely aware of the good and bad.

About the host

Hosted by Clay Mize

Host profile image
My roots run deep in the southern soil. My ancestors often found themselves in a fight. They were in the middle of the Revolution, at odds during the civil war and together again for WWI and II. Ty Cobb and Johnny Mize called my great-grandfather Uncle Billy.

My father was born in a log cabin. By age seven I understood the meaning of a long row to hoe. In Alabama, playing football is what you do if you want a girlfriend. I got more education than I knew what to do with, while my real education came after going to work.

In addition to the family farm, I worked as a furniture assembler, lifeguard, paper boy, waiter, cookie salesman, and oil field roustabout. Other names I held along the way are baby brother, friend, teammate, quarterback, Christian, entrepreneur, professor, talk-show host, landlord, writer, and coach. Some paid better than others. Now I do what I please and it pleases me to manage a couple B&B’s, coach tennis and write, though I still have a dream or two I am cogitating.

A few years ago, I turned away from the financial engine that had been good to me. We helped thousands and paid millions to families in need. I wasn’t fully aware of my desire to go in another direction, but I now understand I wanted a greater return on my time and energy. I could only find this by investing in children, building community and sharing important ideas. The remuneration is an other worldly form of compensation.

I am working on a new novel. If you read one of my books and don’t get an idea that is worth 100 times the cost of the book, I will send you a refund. Let me know at Claiborne.mize@gmail.com

Same goes if I speak to your organization.
