Coyote Mountain cabin retreat, serene exclusive privacy in the tall pines

Arroyo Seco - Valdez Valley - 9 Miles to Taos Ski Valley 10 Miles to Taos Village
(5 NIGHT MINIMUM DURING WINTER MONTHS)

A jewel in the woods and privately nestled one mile above the Rio Hondo Valley with spectacular views in all directions; mountains to the north and east, the Taos Valley to the south and west. Coyote Mountain retreat, meticulously custom designed and built, is owned by an L.A. TV producer and is ideal as a writing retreat or honeymoon getaway.

Unusual attention has been given to detail from unique ash cabinets and micaceous mud walls to antique light fixtures and mission oak furniture. French doors to the covered porch on the south and the brick patio on the north invite you to extend your living space out into nature.

A summer bonus in the owner's words: "We have a portable fan that has never used. I have to say, up here at 8000 feet, We've yet to miss any cooling device in 12 years."

This very special Taos luxury cabin speaks to the most discriminating of guests looking for a total peaceful, serene getaway with absolutely no intrusion from the outside world. The locked gate 1 mile below the property insures that not even a car will drive past your retreat!

Sleeping Arrangements:
1 Bedroom on ground floor with a double bed
2nd floor "look out" room has a double fold down leather sofa

4x4 required in winter and recommended spring, fall and summer
There is a mile-long dirt access road – a couple of steep parts, requiring reliable low gear going up, and solid brakes and vigilance going down.

Valdez Coyote Mountain

The perfect mountain getaway. Gated, private drive, one-track, 4wd road up a secluded, top notch adobe house for 1 to 4 people. Take provisions and never leave. You will enjoy solitude, real peace and quiet with fantastic views (I never saw another person off-road). Or, it’s close enough to enjoy dining in Arroyo Seco and Taos. Yes, you will hear coyotes at night and see local animals. Thank you for building this place. I’ll be back!

another great stay at Coyote Mountain

Rating Details: The property manager was more than helpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was more than happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This is the second time we stayed at Coyote Mountain. Eight years past but nothing had really changed. the house has the same feel, away from everything. the road is still a little challenging but worth the drive. Views are amazing. Quiet time, you can hear the bees humming. Kitchen is well stocked. The main bed is still tiny. The bathtub a treat in this dry land. We love the place and hopefully will come back soon.

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We had rented for three nights and left after one. Some personal issues came up.I had forgotten how small a double bed was.One thing missing was no hair dryer or TV, they were not listed in amenities so that’s on me.When I asked about internet, I was told that most people have smart tv’s and use the internet, so I assumed there was a TV.We did have ant’s in the kitchen when we were unloading the minimal amount of refrigerated items on the counter. As stated in the offering the road is rough but not as bad as some. The location was good, quiet with views. Not as remote as I thought it would be.The people that managed the property were very responsive with texting and phone.Probably some of the best I have come across in this field. Offered to bring up a hairdryer and ant spray, we told them that was not necessaryOther than the ants the house was fine..

Escape from civilization

This is a 5-star property! The house is gorgeous, the grounds are beautiful and private and peaceful. Forever sky and views over the valley. Right out the door there’s a 1-hour hike up the mountain [past the A-frame]. And dog-friendly! We stayed during record heat, wildfires, and closed national forests – and this was exactly the spur-of-the-moment getaway we were hoping for! There is the mile-long dirt access road – a couple of steep parts, requiring reliable low gear going up, and solid brakes and vigilance going down – we didn’t use the Tacoma’s 4-wheel, but thankfully it wasn’t rainy or winter! The bed *is* only a double, and, as others have said, it’s hard. No microwave as promised [it’s now removed from the amenity list]. No al fresco dining per the enticing pictures [for our stay, anyway, the portal being used as storage]. No soft chairs or sofa [well, the upstairs futon, but too hot up there during our stay, and we didn’t really miss inside furniture during summer]. The above notwithstanding, these 4 nights were perfect for the 2 of us + dogs. Daily morning hikes up the mountain, all breakfasts and dinners cooked in [coffeepots above the refrigerator], cooling via judicious window/door openings. Allowed excursions during national forest closures: John Dunn Bridge access to Rio Grande, Wild Rivers Recreational Area visitors center and access to Rio Grande, Taos Ski Valley hiking trails. And we loved the beauty and serenity of Coyote Mountain so much, this escape from civilization, that we bypassed Taos entirely!

Peaceful

We had a great time at this house. It is a beautiful property and the location is very quiet and secluded. The views from upstairs are amazing. The workmanship in building the house was exquisite. Just note that the road is rough and steep, and the main bed is a tight fit for two people, but there is a futon upstairs and an airbed available.

Otherwise, Fabulous!

This was hands-down the most unique and wonderful VRBO vacation rental we ever stayed in, and we have stayed in many. Yes, the location is remote and presents some 'driving up the mountain on dirt road'-issues, but with AWD we did just fine and it was SO worth it! The property is beautiful and the cabin quaint, cozy and decorated so nicely. It was beyond peaceful. While I was excited to see Taos, my husband loved just hanging around the cabin because it was like we had the world to ourselves. The upper room with a view was outstanding!!! We called it the aerie. The view was spectacular. We hope to return to this lovely place. Only "con" I could mention is that the kitchen could use just a little updating, on utensils mostly. Otherwise, fabulous.

Special setting, special house

This spot is all about its own peaceful location on a mountain, If you go, give yourself extra time to just stay tight at that place, not feeling the need to go explore everyday, esp if its your first visit to Taos. We enjoyed the lovely Kiva fireplaces, mountain and valley views and long dirt driveway to amble along.

Incredible property

This property is exquisite - my husband and initially rented this house for 3 nights on a whim, and ended up extending our stay by 3 more nights because we enjoyed it so much. Here's why: 1. Location: The house is located in what essentially feels like your own private national park, with crisp, clean air, wooded hills, walking trails, and a breathtaking view of the valley below. It was so remote, quiet and tranquil that we felt completely renewed after staying there. 2. The house itself is a work of art. The attention to detail in the wordwork, lighting, fireplaces, fixtures, appliances, etc is top notch. You can tell that building and decorating this home was a labor of love (and artistry). One of our favorite things was the refurbished and very cool antique gas stove, which worked like a charm. 3. The hospitality of the owners - staying here didn't feel like staying in some random and generic vacation listing - it felt like being given the privilege of staying in someone's very lovely home. The owners are very generous about letting you use their supplies, and there was an enormous stack of firewood laid in for us. Everything from the plates to the linens to the condiments in the fridge were so nicely appointed that we almost felt bad using them! Overall, it felt more like staying in a luxury spa than a simple vacation rental, and we would love the chance to stay again! A couple of things to note: The dirt road leading to the house is steep and twisty, and should not be attempted for the first time in the dark (especially if it is snowy/icy!) The bed is only a full, and the mattress is on the extra firm side, so if your back likes a softer mattress, you may want to go ahead and use the high-quality airbed that they provide (we wish we had gone ahead and done this). The owners provide a white binder full of instructions about the house - it's a bit overwhelming to go through when you first arrive, but has necessary info that you need to know before you attempt to light the fire.

Great quiet place for reflection!

Rating Details: The property manager was more than helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: I've stayed here several times and it's my go-to place for Taos. The interior is exquisite! The outside spaces are wonderful. Kitchen is so well equipped! Realize this is a FULL bed, not a queen. And realize the road up the hill is quite challenging. But staying at this place is so worth it! It is completely private, great for star-gazing, and just all around peaceful. There was some confusion about my reservation, first time ever, so I had to wait a bit for it to be cleaned. I'll be back here again, no doubt!

Peaceful mountain hideaway with 30 mile views!

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: When Taos passed a city ordinance to restrict in town short term rentals due to Covid -19, we were offered several properties outside of Taos proper. When we go to Taos we always stay in town so we can walk everywhere we want to go. So at first I was kind of bummed. Well, Gary was great to work with. He offered us several properties just outside Taos proper. He also had this property available that was a little further out of town. Not our normal Taos vacation. But we decided to give it a try. Were we so glad we did. This place was unbelievable! This house is perfect! The driveway is a mile long, There is NOBODY around. Secluded paradise with views of 30 plus miles. It was so quiet. I never heard another human or any human activity. If you want to be totally secluded and just be with your mate, this is your place. Great place to truly get away!

Beautiful Accomodations

The property was in a great location, mountain top!! The home has tons of character and beautifully decorated. As I read in other reviews and agree that the place needs a deep cleaning. There were several ongoing maintenance issues that should have been fixed before we arrived, not a deal breaker but annoying.

Beautiful views and unique home, but dangerous road in winter

Rating Details: The property manager was more than helpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was very unhappy with the location. I was satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We spent six nights at this home, attracted by it's secluded location and the beauty of the home. We observed in the description that 4x4 was required during winter, and were not worried because we were driving a 4x4 pick up for the trip. However, there was about 12 inches of snow fall during our time there, and 4 wheel drive was grossly insufficient, especially given the steep grade of the mile-long road and dangerous drop offs along the mountain. The caretaker couldn't even get to the house in her all wheel drive vehicle so we had to meet her in town-this was even before the additional 12 inches of snow fell. At that point, we should have been told that we needed to immediately purchase snow chains for our tires. We eventually did make this purchase, but only after missing 2 days of skiing because we had to wait for the plow to come clear the road (and we had to call to request the plow, and await approval from the owner- no one seemed to recognize that it would be necessary or check on us). Even with chains, the drive up and down the road to the home had to be slow and cautious. NOTE we live in South Texas but have also lived in areas with snow, so we're not foreign to driving in snowy conditions. The owner and property manager need to be much more conscientious of the danger of the road during winter and properly prepare guests.
