About this property

Roonie's Periwinkle Cottage - waterfront- 2 bikes - downtown Stuart

Would you like to get to know the local flavor of downtown Stuart? Would you like to explore by biking the area? Minutes from the beaches, shopping and restaurants? We are looking for people who don't want the typical hotel experience.
We live in a great location and love it here! The main house, which we live in, overlooks the St Lucie River, The cottage sits in front of the main house which gives you complete privacy and lets you come and go as you please. We have lived here since 1984 and done extensive renovation to a 1930's home and cottage. The property has been like an art piece for us. When we bought the property, the yard was minimally landscaped and the house needed major work. Over the years, we have converted our property into a wonderful, nature lover's haven. Our yard looks like something you'd find in Key West. We are organic gardeners and grow pineapples, papaya, key times, veggies and lettuces in our garden boxes along with many herbs. We share whatever is in season. If you are looking for a great experience, you'll find it here! We live on the St Lucie River and allow our guests to enjoy our dock for sunsets or a morning coffee. A beach in our yard provides a quiet get away for reading.

The Cottage details:
Shared washer and dryer with owners. The cottage is equipped with a separate kitchenette to include a frig/freezer, induction hot plate, large toaster oven, juicer, blender, pans, dishes, glassware, and utensils. OOMPLETELY EQUIPPED! The cottage has a dining table w/4 chairs, a very comfy queen bed, a leather sofa, coffee table and end table, wall unit with cable flat screen tv, wireless internet, chest of drawers, closet, vac, linens, beach towels, beach chairs and umbrella, 2 bikes, and a separate bathroom with a shower. In the front of the cottage is a small garden with a gas weber BBQ grill. Enjoy mornings in the garden drinking a cup of Joe or for an evening dinner. We try to give you complete privacy, but are always available for any questions that you may have. The cottage AC is a split unit which is very quiet as the compressor sits outside on the ground like central AC. The floors are all tile for easy maintenance. We have included games and books. Additionally, we have a book on the dining table with all of our favorite things to do and places to go. We include an Enjoyment Book for all of our visitors', use that discounts (2 for 1) local restaurants and activities. We hope you'll try us for a exceptional vacation experience.
Additionally, two bikes are available for use should you like to cruise the area in slow motion :-)
We will collect a 5% county bed tax upon arrival. VRBO collects the FL sales tax, but the county tax is our responsibility. The total of the tax is calculated on the weekly rate + the cleaning fee.

Perfect little cottage

We stayed 2 weeks for a combination work/vacation. It was a little small if we wanted separate spaces - but we managed just fine while working using the indoor space and little patio outside. It was an ideal location, very walkable. The host provided everything we needed, including good tips on where to visit and eat.

Great location/ Helpful hosts

A super clean and cozy cottage is what we found when Christi showed us our abode for the week. I’ve never stayed in such a well equipped unit. Amazing!!! It’s not large, nor new, but totally comfortable and so well located. Catching fish off their dock was also a highlight. Christi and George couldn’t have been more helpful. Thanks to you both! The Cottage exceeded our expectations!

We could not have been happier with the accommodations, location, and the hosts. Everything is as represented; a cozy, well-equipped temporary home walking distance to downtown Stuart. This is the place to stay!

Perfect!

My husband and I stayed there for a month, and it could not have been better. Christi and George, the owners, are the perfect hosts: warm, gracious, funny and interesting, but not intrusive. The cottage is charming, and has everything -- in fact, three of everything -- you might need. You could cook a holiday dinner for ten from the kitchen. The bed and bedding is comfortable, the Wifi strong, the entire place immaculate. Most lovely is the tiny "beach" out back, and the lounge chairs on the deck overlooking the St. Lucie. Stuart itself is very much old Florida -- no corporate chains to be seen. We walked into town everyday, and along the Riverwalk. Many fine local places to dine. We highly recommend this cottage and its wonderful hosts!

I have traveled the world & lived abroad. This cottage is one of the 10 best places I have stayed!

There are not enough superlatives to describe this cottage and its owners-an extra blanket & heater as I arrived the day following the East Coast blizzard; a notebook with everything local in it including 2-for-1 coupons; a Cuisinart ice cream maker used to make utterly divine butter pecan ice cream; freshly picked papaya which topped off lunch one day; the dock which provided a panoramic view for morning coffee – and this is just the beginning! Don't miss going downtown on the local site seeing "tram with driver" or walking to the Blue Door coffee establishment for a lavender latte and freshly baked scone (MWF). The Boathouse restaurant was the scene of two of the best dinners ever and we walked to it through downtown and returned on the Riverwalk. George and Christie – I have not found the perfect superlatives for them! They are one-of-a-kind and because some experiences did not happen during my 10 day stay, I plan to return next year.

Perfect in so many ways!

Stayed here for six nights and loved it from the minute I entered. Great music was playing on the iPod and the cottage is adorably decorated. The owners are so helpful and welcoming; they felt like family! The home is small but beautifully equipped. They even provided a very helpful, detailed binder on the area with recommendations, maps and coupons! The location was perfect: access to the waterfront and an easy walk to downtown Stuart. I visit the Stuart area frequently and have stayed in almost every hotel in the area; however, I will be staying here for all future visits!

"Water is the the most important element in life....,because without it you can't make coffee" C.B.

Great place on the water with the sweet aromatic smell of coffee...... We really enjoyed our stay. Plenty to see, do and eat within walking distance and a short drive will get you to the beach. The owners of this lovely cottage go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable and welcomed. I only wish we stayed longer. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking enjoy Stuart like a local.

Hi, My name is Christi and I work in our boutique real estate business that my husband and I own. I am also a professional photographer. My husband, George is retired and tends to our tropical yard that overlooks the St Lucie River. We are organic gardeners and have two raised bed gardens. We grow pineapples, limes, key limes, papaya, barbados cherries, and bananas. Currently we have bok choy, squash, peppers, broccoli and brussel sports growing along with numerous lettuces. We try to do everything through natural resources. We love Florida and enjoy meeting folks from numerous life walks. I am a water girl…I love the ocean and fresh water springs. George and I prefer being outside. We love our property and hope you will too!

Why they chose this property

Stuart is a special place. We moved up from South Florida in 1982 to get away from the rat race. What we found in Stuart was natural beauty, low density growth, a sense of community and lots of water. Stuart has an inlet to the ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the north and south forks of the St Lucie River. There wasn't much here in the 1980's but over the years and through thoughtful planning, our town has grown to include commercial areas (great shopping and restaurants) and our charming downtown areas. Many of the small area beaches on Hutchinson Island were purchased over the years to allow for a quiet or active choice of beaches. Environmentalists have had a great deal to say as to how Martin County was developed. We have a four story building limit here so we will never be drown out by towering condominiums and much of the natural beauty has been preserved.
Our home was built in the 1930's. That is very old for Florida. We have renovated both the house and cottage but love the quaint charm of that era which makes this property so special. We love the location, too and the proximity to stores, restaurants and the beaches. Many activities are within easy walking distance. The cottage is your home away from home. Everyone loves it. We supply everything you will need, chairs, beach towels and bikes to explore. Everything is so much more interesting from a bike, as life slows down and doesn't pass in a blur. There is a gas weber BBQ in the front garden, so bring the candles to the outside dining area for a romantic evening or pack our picnic back pack for a beach outing. We have a washer and dryer for your use too! We try to make this an experience that you will never forget.

What makes this property unique

Stay in a quaint and immaculately clean Key West style cottage, close to everything in a safe, fun and beautiful area.
Private.
Riverfront dock to watch the sunsets or just enjoy a glass of wine.
Sandy Beach with chairs to read books or enjoy our river views.
There is a downtown trolley that shuttles you thru downtown Stuart
Fully stocked kitchen
