Welcome to Wisteria Cottage in historic Watlington, Oxfordshire, a beautifully renovated 2 bedroom character cottage with sunny garden which has been described by previous guests as a real "home from home". We are surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the Chilterns AONB seen in the tv series "Midsomer Murders". Popular with guests looking for a romantic couples base close to spas, golf courses, historic houses, world class gastronomic experiences and Bicester Designer Village, it also appeals to walkers wanting to explore the many footpaths including 2 of our National Trails, The Ridgeway and Thames Path.

One (or possibly 2 small) well behaved dog(s) is/are welcome (but not on the bed please) at an additional cost. Please discuss bringing an indoor cat prior to booking

Relax with a book in the sunny garden, or light the wood burning stove for a romantic evening in. Keep warm with full gas central heating in all rooms and have a lie in watching a small bedroom tv too.

Explore the lovely Chilterns by foot or bike along the Ridgeway National Trail, visit historic houses and gardens, take day trips to London, Oxford, Windsor, Henley and Marlow or walk /cycle along the Thames Path at Henley or Wallingford 8 miles or cycle The Swans Way, the Watlington 50, the Chilterns Cycle Route and the Watlington Loop.

Stay here for a romantic break, a cycling/walking holiday, visiting friends/family, whilst working locally, escaping the builders or for a relaxing holiday in a beautiful part of the English countryside.

The cottage is cosy and provides a high standard of comfort yet maintains character features like wooden ceiling beams downstairs (mind your head!) and a wood burning stove with a basket of logs provided for you to use. The downstairs bathroom and kitchen offer everything you may hope to find. The porcelain tiled bathroom has a 1500mm bath with wall mounted shower at one end, small basin, WC, radiator, heated towel rail, washer/dryer, shaving/vanity mirror, shaver point and high quality fixtures and fittings. Complimentary bath/shower products are provided for your convenience. The kitchen has an electric oven, ceramic hob, microwave, dishwasher and fridge with a small icebox. The gas powered central heating boiler is hidden in a cupboard to match the units
.
Lots of cooking equipment is provided although there are 2 great pubs with gardens which provide meals in the town and also a fish and chip shop and an Indian restaurant which also offers takeaway food. The local shops are mainly independent and family run like a butcher, bread shop, a beautiful lighting shop, a deli/cafe, and a shop focussing on sustainability.

Now for things you need to know!
Pocket Wi-Fi with reasonable usage is provided
From two off road parking spaces adjacent to the B4009, walk through a gate into the fully enclosed sunny front garden with lawns, flower beds and a patio area which includes a table and seating for 4 people and a traditional Weber BBQ. The front door leads into the cosy sitting room which has restricted head height due to the beam so anyone tall needs to be careful. Here there is a comfortable sofa, 2 tub chairs, a foldaway dining table and chairs, a coffee table and a 32" TV. The little log burner provides both extra heat and a focal point and a basket of logs is provided. If you need more, they are available to buy in the village garage/petrol station. Going through an open door way, you get to the kitchen and from here a shorter and narrower than average door takes you into a lobby (often used as a dog bedroom) leading to both the bathroom and back door.

Outside is a small courtyard area with a washing line. There is a private sunny seating area just perfect for breakfast or morning coffee.

The staircase also leads off the kitchen to the 2 bedrooms, both with a garden view and blackout for a great sleep. The larger has a double bed with a new Hypnos medium firmness 1.40m mattress and hand crafted fitted wardrobes with a dressing table/desk area next to a 22" tv with Free view channels so you can watch in bed. The other small bedroom has a single bed with a memory foam mattress and has a foldaway child’s Z bed underneath. There is a small fitted wardrobe. High quality bed linen, towels, pillows, mattress protectors and duvets of different weights for summer and winter are provided as standard for all beds but feel free to bring your own if you prefer. Sheets and blankets can be provided with 2 weeks advance notice.

PLEASE note that we cannot be held responsible for any loss or lack of services or amenities such as water, gas or electricity whilst you are staying at Wisteria Cottage. These are completely outside our control. They are all dependent on outside providers who will hopefully do their best to resolve the situation. However we will not refund any monies you have paid or find alternative accommodation as it is not a situation we have been part of. If we have to cancel your reservation before your arrival date due to an emergency situation, such as a fire or flood, or a national lockdown which renders the property uninhabitable, we will refund all monies paid. We STRONGLY suggest that all guests have travel insurance.

We ask guests to leave the cottage neat and tidy on departure. We ask if possible for bed linen to be removed and left in a neat pile and for all bins to be emptied into the dustbins. This is to ensure that the safety of our housekeeper is not compromised.

Perfect!
Beautiful, clean, comfortable and well serviced cottage. Jane was the perfect host, provided lots of information and clearly cares about her guests. We used the cottage as a base during the Henley Royal Regatta and as overseas guests we couldn't have asked for more. Would return in a heartbeat! Thank you so much Jane

Nice and cosy cottage, well situated for Oxfordshire
We had a very pleasant stay at this nice and cosy cottage. Jane has provided us with lots of information before arriving. At arrival there was even an welcome package for our dogs. The living room is a bit small but on the other hand very cosy. A nice front garden we four seats and a table in which we also spent some time because of the nice weather. It was very well situated for lost of hiking in Oxfordshire and the Chilterns. Watlington is a small but pleasant village with enough stores to do your dailiy shopping. Pubs in Watlington serve good food and beer. Wallingford, Henley on Thames and Marlow are all at 20 minutes driving distance. At Wallingford a parking with 8 new charger for electric cars is recently available.

Fantastic stay at cosy cottage
We totally loved the cottage! It feels very comfy and has a great feel to it. Ceilings are low, floors are a little bit tilted, but that's just part of the experience of staying in a lovely old cottage. Everything was clean and tidy and very well equipped. Jane was very responsive and a great host. Would definitely recommend.

Welcome retreat.
The cottage provided a welcome retreat for a few days. It was well furnished and had all the kitchen equipment we required. It was cosy enough to make us reluctant to go out of an evening after a day of visiting the surrounding area. Watlington has a surprising selection of shops and two lovely pubs. Jane was a good host and was happy to provide information. A great place to hide away if you want but within easy reach of other towns and villages.

Prima cottage

Felt right at home!
This little cottage could not have been more suited for our week stay in this part of the UK. We had everything we needed and Watlington is a treasure! We really enjoyed walking to town and on the many trails. The food co-op was an easy walk for anything we needed. Jane was a wonderful communicator, and we wanted for nothing. Comfy bed, a nice big bathroom, lovely patio to enjoy our meals on. An easy drive to Turville and Fingest and Greys Court. Really enjoyed our time at this cottage!

Beautiful Cottage in great location
We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday at Wisteria Cottage. The cottage was perfect for the two of us and our dog Rosso. We were so lucky with the weather which meant we had long lazy mornings enjoying breakfast in the lovely courtyard garden whilst planning our walks for the day from the many books and leaflets provided. We could easily have managed without getting in the car at all as there were so many different walks from Watlington itself and the pubs and shops of the town are a short walk away. We enjoyed meals/drinks at The Spire and Spoke and The Fat Fox but ate in a few nights as the patio was such a sun trap and the kitchen so well equipped it was difficult to tear ourselves away. Every where we went in the town everyone was so welcoming and dog friendly. We were genuinely sad to pack our bags and leave and hope to return. Would highly recommend.

Charming village life
We Stayed at Wysteria Cottage in Watlington for two weeks, and the longer we stayed, the more we enjoyed our experience. Watlington is a well located village ten minutes off the M40 so it is super convenient for day trips. A few good pubs and shops in walking distance and the Red Kites are amazing to watch. Great cottage for two adults, but you have to learn to "mind your head" in some doorways, but once you do, the house is well equipped with everything you need. The owner, Jane, is THE best at advance communications and making sure everything is set for a good experience.

Small for the price but clean & tidy.
We arrived at the cottage after staying at a 4 bedroom house with large garden at app.£100 less and no deposit, then moved after Wisteria to another house & garden for £200 less and no deposit. We also have another Owners Direct cottage booked for Christmas & New Year which is house with garden at only £100 per week more and only £100 deposit, therefore thought Wisteria bit pricey. Having looked at site again did note size but at time of booking this was one of 6 cottages plus 6 nights away so not possible to spot all details in relation to price.

Cozy cottage
My wife and I had a great 5 night stay at Wisteria cottage in Watlington. Cottage was small but had all the amenities that one could hope for. Great location to explore Oxfordshire. One note, mind-the-gap through doors as they are low, I found myself bumping my head several times. Paul and Kate Thompson

Wisteria Cottage, Watlington
I would highly recommend staying at Wisteria Cottage in Watlington. It is a lovely, quaint two bed cottage in amongst some beautiful countryside, within easy commute to London, Oxford, Henley on Thames. The facilities in the cottage are lovely as it has been recently rennovated to a very high standard. The beds are comfortable and the house was very clean and tidy. Jane, the owner, and Dawn (who sorts problems) are friendly and approachable. It was lovely to have a selection of tea, coffee, bread, eggs etc so there was food there to start the holiday without me having to worry about shopping as soon as I arrived. Jane came and met me the day after I arrive and this really made me feel like I mattered. Dawn came, after the first week, and changed sheets etc which was lovely. The day I left saw both Jane and Dawn come and I really felt like they had my best interests at heart. I will definitely come back to Wisteria Cottage again!

Excellent Stay
My wife, son and I enjoyed our week's stay in Wisteria Cottage. It was a lovely, small cottage full of character and very well equipped. Jane has thought of everything that is need to make the stay as comfortable as possible. The village has a variety of shops, including hand made chocolates and great places to eat such as the Fat Fox if you don't want to cook. There are good bus links from the village to Oxford. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return if holidaying in the area again. Highly recommended with a super host.

About the host

Host profile image
I have always been interested in property and meeting people so what better than go into property renovation as holiday lets?
My first venture was successful in Windsor, then I arranged for the complete modernisation of a property in Halifax Yorkshire (OD 1906473) which I started renting just before Christmas 2015. We sold the Windsor apartment to buy the cosy character Wisteria Cottage Watlington Oxfordshire in the Chilterns which is on the Midsomer Trail.

Why they chose this property

It is a lovely cottage, full of character in a really great location. Having one parking space in the town is a bonus, but two is really unusual and we achieved this through removal of a huge amount of vegetation which had been allowed to grow untamed for the past 10 years. The cottage now has a modern kitchen with a country feel and a downstairs bathroom. The latest addition is a full size 50/50 fridge freezer and a new luxury medium Hypnos mattress for the double bed and a memory foam mattress for the single bed

What makes this property unique

A warm, cosy cottage with wall and ceiling beams in the sitting room and kitchen and a log burning stove too. The sheltered, sunny South facing front garden is a delight to relax in and watch the majestic Red Kites circling above. New for 2023 is a small private seating area in the back courtyard which will be perfect to enjoy in the morning sunshine.
Gas central heating and the log burner means you are never cold and every conceivable extra has been incorporated into the design to ensure your comfort.
Parking for 2 cars and walks straight from the door into beautiful countryside including The Ridgeway National Trail and The South Oxfordshire Way mean it is a walkers paradise. The local village pubs are within 10 minutes walk and they welcome dogs too.
We provide dog bowls, dog towels and seat covers but request that you bring your pets bed. We request that your dog (or 2 small ones) stay out of the bedrooms as our non doggy guests are reassured to know this.
