About this property

SKY RIVER CHALET- ON THE RIVER WITH A VIEW OF THE MOUNTAINS & NEARBY HIKING

On the bank of the Skykomish River South Fork (aka the “Tye River”) with a sweeping view of 5,000' Beckler Peak and the Wild Sky Wilderness, it’s immediately obvious that Sky River Chalet was built by an artist for her own large family. With a 15’ cathedral ceiling, a massive granite fireplace, comfortable leather and log furniture, and views of the mountains, river, or trees from every room, Sky River Chalet is the kind of rustic mountain lodge people dream of. The Chalet is perfect for a couple looking for a romantic getaway, or for larger groups of family or friends who want plenty of room. The Chalet includes all of the modern amenities, a large riverbank deck with outdoor furniture and a BBQ for sunny days, and a large Hot Tub right on the River Bank for use in cooler weather. Inside, our huge basement game room with ping-pong, foosball, and a fireplace and sauna entertain in even the most inclement weather. Our bookshelves are loaded with interesting reading material and displays, and the unique furnishings and décor emphasizing natural history, alpine and winter sports, and historic themes will make your stay unforgettable.

Sky River Chalet is located 75 to 90 minutes from Seattle in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in the small community of Timberlane Village, off U.S. Highway 2 two miles east of Skykomish thirteen miles from Stevens Pass. Of all the westside communities with modern amenities (plowed roads, electricity, TV & high-speed internet), Timberlane Village is nearest to Stevens Pass. The Chalet is a perfect base for year-round outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, mountain-biking, whitewater kayaking and rafting, downhill skiing and/or Nordic skiing at Stevens Pass (December to mid-April), birding, wildflower and mushroom forays, or watching the wild critters from our river bank deck. There are five separate wilderness areas within a twenty-five mile radius of our Chalet, and if the maps and guidebooks at our cabin aren’t sufficient, the Skykomish Ranger Station of the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is a half mile away.

Sky River Chalet was designed for outdoor enthusiasts. The stone Entry Hall has beautiful hardwood benches and racks where skis, boots, packs, and other outdoor gear can be stored or hung up to dry. While charming in its own right, this functional area is enhanced by historic climbing and skiing pictures, an antique handmade kayak used by the owners’ son as a young boy, and a special memorial to the 10th Mountain Division in which so many Northwest skiers and mountaineers served with distinction during World War II.

After stowing your gear in the entry hall, the stone passageway leads past the master bedroom and bath to our Living Room with its 15’ cathedral ceiling and massive two-story granite fireplace. With its beautiful woodwork, comfortable leather furniture, and unique alpine and wildlife décor, the Living Room is the center of life in the Chalet. The shelves are loaded with interesting books about natural history and the outdoors, and the 60” flat-screen Smart TV and Blueray/VHS players facilitate indoor entertainment. The Living Room has lots of glass, looking out on our river bank deck with birds, squirrels and raccoons that come and go, and a view across the river to the mountains beyond. A sliding glass door allows access to a comfortable table and chairs and Webber BBQ on the deck, and the river bank Hot Tub a few steps below.

Opposite the Living Room is our Dining Area with a hardwood table that comfortably seats 8-10 guests, and can also be used for work, study, or after-dinner board games only a few feet away from (but still near) those guests who prefer to read, converse, or watch a movie in front of the fire.

The large modern Kitchen is light and bright with windows affording views of the river and trees outside, and connected to the living and dining areas so those preparing the feast won’t miss out. The Kitchen has all of the pots, pans, dishes & utensils you’ll need to prepare meals, and dishes and silverware sufficient for even a large group. Modern appliances include a Microwave, a Cuisinart Griddler-Grill, a Blender, a Toaster, a rice cooker, a Drip Coffee Maker, along with a Dishwasher. There may even be an assortment of spices, and a few staples in case you forget something.

When weather permits, the Living Room and Kitchen each open onto a huge Riverbank Deck, and BBQing and outdoor dining can be wonderful! There is a glass table with umbrella, 4 comfortable swivel- recliners, and extra chairs to accommodate 6 or 8. From our river bank deck we have a splendid view of 5,000' Beckler Peak and occasional views of local wildlife (otters, dippers, ducks and spawning salmon at different times of the year) in the creek immediately in front of our cabin.

There are two Bathrooms on the main floor. The one near the entrance has slate floors, a sink, a toilet, and a shower, as well as a washer and dryer.

The Master Bedroom on the main floor has a vaulted wood ceiling, hardwood floors, rustic log furniture, mountain décor, a faux antler chandelier, and its own newly remodeled bathroom crafted with beautiful travertine stone tile. The queen bed has a massive log frame that matches the other decor, lots of pillows and a down comforter.

On the second floor are a bath and three more bedrooms : (1) the “River Room” with a double bed and a private balcony overlooking the river and Beckler Peak, (2) the “Sun Valley Room” with a queen bed and a view upstream, and (3) the “Racer Room” with a double bed, a work/study desk, and a private balcony with a local view. Each bedroom is attractively furnished with mountain décor. The private balconies each have chairs for sitting out.

A winding staircase leads up from the second floor to our huge carpeted Loft on the third floor. Measuring sixty feet in length, carpeted and with a private balcony on each end, there are a TV/VCR and a few toys, books, and movies for children. Our loft is a kids’ paradise but many adults have also spent comfortable nights there.

A unique and distinguishing feature of the Chalet is the huge Basement Game Room where guests can play ping pong, foosball, other games, or watch a movie separate from the group upstairs who may be conversing, reading, playing board games, or watching a different movie. There is another fireplace and a stereo downstairs, as well as a Sauna and double shower.

Sky River Chalet is unlike any other cabin you’ve ever visited. It is warm and cozy, and able to accommodate small or larger groups equally well. And if your group is even larger and needs another three bedrooms, consider reserving our other nearby property Sky River Cabin (VRBO 93656) as well.

Wonderful as Always
Last time we stayed in 2021, this home was already outstanding. Since then they've upgraded some of the electronics, the AC seems newer, and everything else is just as great as last time! No other VRBO has as much personality. We hope to make this an annual trip for our group.

Place was wonderful had everything we needed plus more. Grandkids loved the toys games and sleeping area. A fan in the kid's bedroom area would have been nice. It was a bit longer than expected because of traffic to get to Seattle which was difficult for the little kids

Great getaway in the forest
We were a 3 generation family and everyone of us loved this mountain home. We were secluded and had a great view of the river. Saw a large black bear fishing for their supper in the river right across from our balcony. The house was amazing. Lots of room to spread out. Our grandkids loved seeing all the animals preserved in the house. We had no complaints. Loved it all.

Great choice!
Nice "Home" feeling cabin just off the river. Nice kitchen with everything except the food.. My mother had very good things to say and we all enjoyed a great family get away.. The only issue we had was the dogs acting aggressively to a couple of the taxidermy pieces. Otherwise, an excellent choice that will be a family memory for us.

Despite the border closure that prevented our friends from joining us as planned, we made full use of the chalet to do exactly nothing all week and it was GLORIOUS.

Love this home! 2nd stay.
This is our second visit to Sky River Chalet. We love coming here and hope to return. Beautiful views of the river and mountains. This time we hiked Becker Peak (your view from the large deck). Plenty of activities around the area and amenities within the home - spa, sauna, foosball, ping pong, movies, THE DECK! We welcome the drizzly day to slow us down to enjoy the space. Our favorite thing would have to be the feel of the chalet - it’s a gathering place with a lot of family memories and they’re allowing you in to make your own. Highly recommend (not during my week though). Our first visit was with extended family, enough space to enjoy adult vs kid time. Second was our immediate family only and we loved it just as much.

Perfect for groups, gorgeous property
We had a magical time at this house. Every inch is charming, well-maintained, and full of care. Extremely clean and you can tell Pat and George love this house deeply. The four bedrooms (minus the attic) are all very spacious, there are plenty of bathrooms and showers, and the attic is a true gem. The VHS tapes were amazing! The 6-year-old in our group loved the old toys in the attic. There are so many fun things to do in this house, you won't want to leave, and you definitely won't have time for all of them. By the second day we were already talking about when we would come back. If you can rent this home, don't hestitate, you'll have a fantastic experience.

Great cabin with everything you could need
The property was much larger than the listing really shows. There is plenty of room to work and play in this cabin. The cabin also is full of great informational books and other things that you could spend a whole weekend exploring. My friends and I really enjoyed our stay and are excited to try and come back for a winter Ski trip!

Lovely, well-appointed get-away chalet
This property is bursting with character. Its owners obviously love the outdoors and to ski. It is decorated with old skis, historical photos, and charming souvenirs. There is an extensive collection of taxidermied endogenous animals you might see outside. Normally this sort of display would upset my tender-hearted kids. But the animals are very friendly looking - no bitter deer heads staring at you with reproach. Just a friendly fox my youngest was plotting to take home. We found the mattresses to be firm and comfortable, the a/c was able to keep us cool in 100 degree weather. The kitchen is well-appointed with everything you need. The neighborhood is very quiet and friendly and the river is loud. Great water pressure for showers. The hot tub was amazingly clean. We loved floating in the river at the nearby pebble beach. Swim upstream for deeper water. Bring wet suit booties if you have them - even in late August our feet were pretty numb after 15 min. The game room downstairs has ping pong, fusball, a tv, and a sauna! Great place to stuff the teens. I enjoyed the great library of wildlife, Skykomish history, mushrooms, skiing, and survival skills. We all enjoyed the fantastic food at Smokey’s BBQ - best BBQ since we moved here from AZ a decade ago. Cascadia Inn has yummy brunches and sandwiches. The train museum has free mini train rides on weekends. We loved this spot and hope to return. The owners were responsive and helpful.

Beautiful Unique Cabin in a great little neighborhood
Seriously, this cabin had more personality than you would think could be contained. It's charming, it has lots of spaces and places for a good sized group to gather AND separate. During some of the season (including ours) there is literally a small pond filled by the river right off the deck. The property owners where incredibly quick to respond to the couple of questions that did come up. I would totally stay here again.

This cabin is a real jam! We spent there 2 nights only, I wish we could stay longer. Very relaxing place, the house is stocked with everything, so many bird feeders, we filled them up and watched the birds come and go, made some good photos. Thank you for letting us bring our old friend Bilbo (yellow lab), he enjoyed so much the nature and the river.

We met while climbing and skiing with The Mountaineers. Since we love to hike, climb, ski, kayak, watch wildlife, study wildflowers, gather mushrooms, and just watch the trees grow, we enjoy Sky River Chalet every season of the year!

Why they chose this property

With world class hiking, skiing, whitewater, and rock climbing in five separate wilderness areas within a 15 mile radius and located only 1 1/2 hours from Seattle, who can beat it? Did I mention the waterfalls, old growth forest, and the fantastic blooms of wildflowers and mushrooms?

What makes this property unique

The magnificent 18 foot high granite fireplace, the beautiful woodwork, the unique décor, the huge basement game room with its own fireplace and Sauna, the river bank Hot Tub, the high balconies overlooking the Tye River and Beckler Peak, and the number of bedrooms and separate sleeping areas make Sky River Chalet an unforgettable experience winter or summer. In addition, since we are dedicated naturalists ourselves, we've got a fabulous natural history library of books covering the native fauna and flora of the Pacific Northwest, and our cabin is a veritable 'Natural History Museum' with dozens of pictures and mounted specimens to help our guests better understand and appreciate the birds and mammals that live in the Cascades. Staying here is truly like spending 'a Night at the Museum'.
