About this property

Luxury 5 star chocolate box thatched cottage close to west Wight beaches

Grants Cottage occupies a lovely village setting, two minutes' walk from the pub, and opposite the medieval church and water pump. There is a large fenced, pet-safe garden with a gate leading onto the cricket pitch. Under ten minutes' drive from the beaches, ferry, and the shops of nearby Newport. The historic coastal town of Yarmouth, with its individual shops and delicatessen, is also close by. There are many footpaths on the doorstep, leading up to and across the downs, affording spectacular scenery and breathtaking views.

Having undergone a major renovation in 2016, the cottage is extremely comfortable, filled with antiques and sumptuous soft-furnishings. The accommodation comprises a cosy sitting room with wood-burning stove, shelves stuffed with books and games, a flat screen 'Smart' television, DVD player and DVDs, and a Bose iPod dock with iPhone adapter. The kitchen is large, with dining and sitting areas. There is an Aga which is lit in the colder months, electric fan oven and hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher and a washing machine and tumble drier in a small, separate utility area. There is wifi access, and a desk situated in the hall, with ample workspace for a laptop, and a wireless printer provided. The downstairs bathroom has bath, electric shower, washbasin, WC, shaverpoint and heated towel rail. The small staircase leads to the first floor where there are two double bedrooms and one twin. There are two super-kingsized beds and two singles; but all the deep, pocket-sprung mattresses are zip-and-link and so may be split or combined as required. The two larger bedrooms have built in wardrobes, while the smaller twin room has a hanging rail and generous drawer space. Also upstairs is a WC, with washbasin and shaver point.

Outside there is a good-sized, fenced and dog-proof garden, with plenty of lawn area and a terrace with large dining table and chairs. A lockable shed provides safe storage for sports equipment. The cricket pitch at the rear of the garden can be accessed, which in turn leads to tennis courts and a children's play area. The local pub is a couple of minutes' walk away, while the Island's pub of the year in nearby Shalfleet is just a five minute drive.

The cottage is perfect for summer holidays due to its proximity to the coast and the many attractions the Island offers, but also is fully heated and cosy enough for autumn and winter breaks when one can curl up with a good book in front of the wood-burner, or go for bracing walks on Tennyson Down followed by a delicious pub lunch, when the crowds have left. We are pet friendly and welcome one or two small, well-behaved dogs for an extra charge of £25.00 per dog.

Ok, but setting not as advertised.
It's a bit of a shock to arrive at the cottage to find it's on a blind bend with double yellow lines outside - not quite like the photo! Parking, which is carefully not highlighted, can be problematic if there is an event in the nearby recreation ground. Overall the cottage was clean, well equipped, with lovely linen and a welcome basket, but pervaded by a strange chemical smell. One of our party was unable to eat inside due to this. Coming downstairs each morning the first impression was of cigarette smoke... The garden was perfect for our little dog but getting him, plus elderly person, from the cottage to the car was nerve-wrecking. We slept reasonably well apart from the water tank in one of the bedrooms which woke us regularly through the night. All the little touches were appreciated but we won't be going there again.

Fabulous cottage, great location
Cannot fault this property, lovely home from home with everything you need in place. Beautiful cottage inside and out - our little dog Percy couldn’t believe his luck with being able to roam freely in his own garden! The beds and sofas super comfy, the kitchen stocked better than our own and great communication from owner, as well as a little welcome parcel which was much appreciated. Location is idyllic and perfect for getting about all over the Isle -we loved the property and location, can’t recommend enough!

A wonderful stay in a beautiful cottage
It was such a treat staying at Grants Cottage! The cottage is beautifully furnished and decorated and every little detail has been thought about. Our three children were enchanted by the ‘little cottage with the thatched roof’ which is like something from a storybook! They had a fabulous time playing in the beautiful garden and didn’t want to come home - it was all idyllic. Thank you Lizzie for letting us borrow your wonderful cottage and for all the delicious welcome gifts which were much appreciated. We’d love to stay at Grants Cottage again one day!

More than perfect
Everything was just perfect! Grants Cottage is a 5 star accommodation, we would want to come back anytime. It was so clean, crisp sheets, fluffy towels, great beds, a great kitchen with everything you need to bake and cook, and don’t forget the cozy livingroom where we burned a log every night. In addition, the communication with Lizzy, the warm welcome, tips where to go on the island, it all added up to our fantastic family get-away. Make sure you’ll book, you will definitely not regret it. Thank you Lizzy and Helen :).

About the host

Your host

Host profile image
Although my husband and I have lived in Herefordshire for many years, we both consider the Island to be 'home'. I was born and educated here, and my husband also grew up here. But much has changed since I left to go and live and work in London in 1975. Now there are so many award-winning places to eat, supermarkets, multi-screen cinemas, a reputation for fantastic food production and many artisan producers helping to make brand Isle of Wight very special. It is definitely a place people want to return to.

Why they chose this property

As a professional author I was searching for a place that would be a perfect retreat away from every day life in order to work on my novels. When I saw Grants Cottage in May 2015 I fell in love with it straight away. I was also intrigued by the literary connection with William Long, the author of the Isle of Wight dialect dictionary.

I wanted to retain as much of the cottage's original character as possible, but at the same time ensure it was, above all else, comfortable and relaxing for both summer and winter use. In addition, Compton Bay which is about a 15 minute drive from the cottage is where I learned to swim, and where I remember spending those long hot days of childhood summers picnicking and playing.

What makes this property unique

Calbourne is one of the loveliest villages on the Island, unspoilt and full of warm and friendly locals with a thriving village community. To me Grants Cottage is the archetypal romantic ideal of what an English thatched cottage should be.
