About this property

Adventurous And Comfortable Glamping In The Heart Of Yuba River Gold Country

Venture to the heart of Yuba River country and experience the rustic chic comfort of “glamping” (glamorous camping) in a 30’ pacific yurt. A remedy for "nature deficit disorder", this is your opportunity to taste the magic of simple living in the round…

Located on the north san juan ridge at the edge of tahoe national forest, endless outdoor activities abound. Enjoy incredible hiking, crystal-clear swimming holes and world-class mountain biking trails during summer and pristine snow-play areas away from the crowds during winter. Take in gorgeous scenic drives and numerous points of historical interest--including malokoff diggins--from California gold rush period. Discover the active gold mining town of Allegheny, the scenic beauty of downieville or soak the afternoon away at sierra hot springs in sierra ville. The village of Nevada city--with all it has to offer--is just 20 minutes away.

Or simply relax...

As much a nature blind as a dwelling, the yurt is located on 5 peaceful acres of mixed oak and madrone woodland with a filtered view of the sierra foothills, a claw foot bath tub under the stars and much more. Light and airy with both propane and wood heat, the well-designed interior features a spacious kitchen, a comfy queen bed and a full bathroom. The kitchen is stocked for a cook with quality cooking equipment and is supplied with oils, sauces and spices. Tranquil, without phones or TV--but with WiFi—there are games and plenty of good books. A perfect anytime retreat!

Peaceful and relaxing
My wife and I stayed for our anniversary. We have 3 kids and needed a little alone time and time to relax. This was a very quiet and cool place. It was better then we expected. It’s so peaceful. The host was very responsive. We will definitely be returning.

Winter relaxation
Very cozy yurt! We had the nicest time celebrating our anniversary here in the country. The yurt had basically everything we could need and made it super easy. Kathy has really spent l lots of time putting together some very informative binders with local information and places to go. Don't miss the fried chicken at the gas station in San Juan

Wonderful, quirky getaway
We had a wonderful, relaxing stay at this unusual venue. The owners have provided everything we needed to be comfortable, including a fully equipped kitchen and an electric grill outside. The yurt itself, its cabinets and some of the equipment are a little shabby, but, given the overall cleanliness and the fair rental fee, this is easy to overlook. The property just feels really good!

Spacious and perfectly secluded
My partner and I booked this place for a long weekend getaway, and it was perfect -- bigger than we'd expected and nearly all the comforts of home (and then some; the outdoor clawfoot tub is amazing!). It'd be a great place to hunker down for a peaceful stay in the woods, but Nevada City and Grass Valley also have excellent bars and restaurants a short drive away. Kathy and Jim were terrific about communicating the quirks of yurt living and expectations of guests. Looking forward to our next stay!

Location! The spot is incredibly quiet with not a sound around. It’s close to a few really nice spots on Yuba river. The instructions how to get there and overall orientation to the area were detailed and super helpful. Hope to come again.

Perfect Yurt Getaway close to Yuba River
First Yurt we ever stayed in, it felt huge, at least 30' in diameter, and had everything we needed. Perfect blend of glamping, tree houses, with all the comforts ! Awesome Experience, so relaxing.

Remote glamping on the ridge!
The Yurt was comfortable and had all the amenities we needed for an almost camping experience. The kitchen was fully stocked, we brought all our groceries with us, but Mother Trucker’s co-op was just a short drive away if needed. Location was very remote and quiet, and the deck was nice to relax on at night (bring your bug spray!). Our 10 year old loved it! There’s a friendly frog that lives in the shower/bathroom, which surprised me. Also, be prepared to pack out whatever garbage you create while there, as you’re responsible for taking it with you when you go. The directions were very straightforward and the driveway is well marked with signs. We had a lovely but very hot mid-July stay.

Hideaway
The yurt is great. Feels like you're in a treehouse when you look out the windows. Lots of comfort, everything you will need definitely a glamping type experience. Now the town of North San Juan the people are unique. They definitely don't come across as friendly. But Grass valley was a great town and it's beautiful area for sure. Great hiking, met lots of friendly people on the trail

Out of this world
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.We were able to bring our 7 month old lab.The kitchen has a full array of spices and oils. You get an unobstructed view of the sunset from the backdeck. The owners were very responsive to our e- mails. They left 2 binders full of activities to do in the area.We went to the swimming hole at Oregon Creek- 10 min.away.The road to the yurt is gravel and steep- so I was happy to have our truck. We would stay again.

I loved the yurt so much. Everything about it was perfect. It felt like staying in a treehouse.
My experience of staying in the yurt was wonderful. It felt like two days in heaven. I wish I had booked it for a week. That is the only thing I would have changed. Oh, maybe I would have liked to have known the best River spots nearby, but Kathy is so organized that I probably just didn’t read the literature there thoroughly enough.

Read the instructions
Yurt was pretty much as advertised, looked nicer in the photos but was very clean and quiet. Lucky for us (me) I sent the arrival instructions email to my wife on our way out because we would totally have arrived not knowing we needed to bring our own sheets and pillowcases. Also lucky we drove our truck as the road and driveway are pretty rough in spots. I'd recommend leaving any lowered vehicles at home. We were surprised to find out you have to take your own garbage with you when you leave, again, happy we drove the truck. Overall a nice weekend getaway, I just think there should be a little info up front.

We had such a peaceful time at the yurt. The bed was comfortable, kitchen had all the bells and whistles, the water was hot and the fire a smoldering success. We loved our time here and look forward to returning and taking in its beauty during another season. So grateful to have come across this gem!

Looking forward to another visit!
We enjoyed a comfortable and quiet stay at the yurt in September. The weather was sunny, the days were long, the river was freezing, but we enjoyed it anyway. I just slept on a boulder with my feet in the river and watched dragonflies between naps. I appreciated the comprehensive guide to everything in the area. We enjoyed playing Scrabble, listening to bluegrass on the local radio station, reading, watching the sun and shadows in the trees, and cooking. The yurt had all the conveniences we needed to bunker down and chill. We're very happy to have found the yurt and add it to our list of go-to getaways.

Wooded Paradise
The hosts were wonderful and communicative, wanting to make sure we arrived ok. My family and I loved the property and staying in this cozy yurt. My 3 year old and I enjoyed gorgeous sunset walks and boulder climbing nearby. The stars at night were amazing and the peace we experienced so far away from town was wonderful. Thanks for the games and beautiful Treehouse calendars which we enjoyed and for the woodburning stove that kept us warm all weekend. We hope to come back when it's warmer.

About the host

Hosted by Kathy Ocean

Host profile image
We're Jim and Kathy Ocean, musicians and concert producers who decided to share our little piece of Russian River paradise--which we named 'RiverSea'--after landing in Guerneville the summer of 2004.

When we met, we lived between Jim's houseboat in the Martinez Marina and Kathy's yurt in the Sierra Foothills near Nevada City. Before moving to Guerneville, we sold the houseboat and turned the yurt property into a long-term rental. Having discovered how much we enjoy the vacation rental biz, we decided in 2013 to 'reclaim' the 'Yuba Yurt' for ourselves and fellow vacation rental adventurers. (Don't be surprised to see a houseboat in our future vacation rental offerings, as we both miss being rocked to sleep and waking to the sound of quacking ducks.)

We consider ourselves very lucky to be in the position of meeting wonderful people from all over the world. We take great pleasure in sharing our homes near Guerneville and Nevada City and creating spaces where people like you can relax, explore and recharge.

Why they chose this property

In the mid 1990's, Kathy--a rural animal at heart--found herself going quietly mad while raising her young children in suburbia. One day a friend showed her a picture of a peculiar structure called a 'yurt' in the Whole Earth Catalog. From that moment, when feeling particularly frazzled, Kathy began visualizing & decorating a yurt atop a wooded knoll in the mountains. Inhabiting and adding detail to the visualization worked wonders as a calming device (and she did it often and enthusiastically). Several years later, while visiting friends in the mountains, Kathy spotted a flyer on a bulletin board at the local market for a yurt for sale on 5 acres. She immediately called the phone number, and ten minutes later walked into the real live version of the yurt and property she had been visualizing for years. (The rest as they say . . . is history.)

What makes this property unique

There's nothing quite like living in a round space with only a tiny barrier between the inside and the outside. The energy flows freely. You feel comfortable and protected while fundamentally connected to nature around you. With all the basic amenities of the modern world, but without the clutter of more than you need, tensions tend to melt away leaving calm and clarity in its place. Plus--from the lightest snow to the heaviest rainfall, yurts create the most amazing soundscapes. If you appreciate nature and are curious about alternative and earth-friendly lifestyle choices, you owe it to yourself to spend some time in the Yuba Yurt.
