About this property

Secluded ‘Barn' sleeps 4, updated with full-kitchen, 2-block walk to Downtown.

This charming old barn was recently updated and is now a very comfortable space for a family of 4, or anyone looking for a secluded environment only 2 blocks from Nevada City’s downtown.

Located on a wooded full-acre, the barn with features new stainless steel appliances; a large refrigerator and 4-burner gas stove, dishwasher, and new cabinetry and countertops. The flooring was recently updated, and the bathroom has a large stone-shower stall with glass doors and designer hardware. All new cookware, Restoration Hardware’s 600-threadcount bedding and towels, new flat-screen TV with Direct TV, and a wood-burning stove.

The barn is a two-room suite and features a large bedroom with a new queen-size Beautyrest mattress bed, and also a large comfortable queen-sized pullout couch in living room. There is off street parking onsite, very important as it’s nearly impossible to park in-town during all of Nevada City’s wildly popular events.

Perfect location, peaceful property
My husband and I truly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful property full of gardens, tiered patios and wonderful sculptures. Its location is an easy walk to everything downtown Nevada City has to offer. The property manager and owner were very friendly, accommodating and quick to respond when we had a question. We would love to return again soon!

Close to downtown
Very clean with a fireplace and comfy bed. If you like to cook there are basic pots and pans but not a lot of tools. No coffee pot but a French press and 2 pour overs with filters. We were not able to connect to Netflix or Hulu. Direct TV had movie purchase options. Overall comfortable stay.

Great getaway in gold country
Easy to find, check-in and gaining entry was easy. Facilities were attractive and clean and adequate for our 3-day self-catering stay, with a modern kitchen area and open, high-ceiling living area, good for a couple but would be tight for any more. We’d say in the top shelf for the area, in a large private garden and very quiet and surrounded by a grove of oaks and pines, but easy walking distance into town. The old Consolidated Dutchwest Federal wood stove was great on a couple of cold fall nights, we had no trouble getting it working. Instructions on where to find wood on the property and providing a baking sheet for the oven to heat our Cornish pasties from a nearby bakery would help. Would definitely return.

Very nice
The only reason I’m giving it four stars Instead if five is because the hot tub is no longer in service but is for some reason still listed when using filters to find a place. Beautiful property and a great host.

We had a fantastic time at this property. It’s beautiful, well maintained, and the hot tub was just what the doctor ordered. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and hope to visit again soon!

Wonderful stay in Nevada City
Great space and perfect for a couple - and our dog. We really enjoyed how cozy the barn is. The location is fantastic and really just a few minutes walk from downtown, without having to worry about parking. Check in/out was easy and communication with Graham and the owners was great. Can't wait to return once the weather cools off and we can take more advantage of the hot tub. Great yard for the pup to walk around and lots of trails for longer walks. 100% recommend this place.

Lovely Experience
We rented out the Barn + the Garden Studio for a project in the area. Graham the property manager was extremely courteous and helpful throughout the process – even as we arrived to a black out in the County, he set us up and made us feel safe, and at home immediately. It was an absolute pleasure spending time here. Walking distance from town, if you need anything. I'd stay here again anytime I am visiting Nevada City or Grass Valley.

The Right Thing at the Rght Time
This was the perfect getaway for us - two people and a dog. We loved the quiet of the property, beautiful yard and easy coming and going on foot into town. During this time of social distancing, it was just right for us.

Awesome awesome awesome
We loved the place - we stayed in the barn. Three of us. The location was perfect. Quiet, a little hidden, private for sure. We basically had the place to ourselves. All this and a short walk into town. The property was really pretty and well kept. My only challenge was that we got invaded by ants - my son left fruit in the sink - not Mollie’s fault. It happens. We would 100% stay again!

Nevada City Stay
I loved the living space in The Barn. The bathroom was a little tight. The grounds were so peaceful. It's a short walk to town from here, which is very convenient. If you have a bigger group, renting the whole property would be ideal.

Wonderful stay!
Our family had a wonderful time staying at the barn! Everything was as described, if not more charming than we expected. Mollie was a great host, communication was very easy and we enjoyed chatting with her when crossing paths on the property over the holiday weekend. We would love to stay here again!

Love this place
We loved staying in the private barn unit and waking up to the tranquil view of the lush garden. It's so charming with all the amenities one needs for a great stay in Nevada City. We especially enjoyed hitting up the Saturday farmers market in town, just a quick 5 minute walk from this amazing property, and then having the barn kitchen/living room to return to with all our market goodies. The location is perfect. It is close to the historic downtown yet secluded enough on the back of the property that retreating here is so relaxing. This place is a gem.

A charming home in a perfect location.
We would happily stay here again. The house is positioned so you feel you are in nature, yet only three blocks from downtown. We were able to walk everywhere, which is bonus since downtown often lacks parking spots. So much detail went into the home and its’ furnishings to make it both beautiful and comfortable. The pool is the answer to the hot summer days here and the hot tub is luxurious in the mornings and nights. We’ve stayed in many homes on Air BnB and this is a rare find! I didn’t know about VRBO before but it’s very user friendly.

Beautiful space but can be loud with no privacy if main house rented
The barn itself is beautiful with a great view of trees outside, and Molly was very friendly and responsive. In the winter it is likely cozy and quiet. We visited when it was 90+ degrees outside and the barn does not have access to the pool with only a ceiling fan and weak mini fan. The main house in front of the barn is also a rental and has a large deck and full access to the lawn, patio and pool surrounding three sides of the barn. So on our visit we ended up being surrounded by main house guests playing frisbee on the lawn, hanging out on the patio each night and splashing in the pool until 10:15 pm. This is likely a great rental if you get the main house, but if you are in the barn it can be loud with no privacy.

Our week in Nevada City
We loved the character of the house and very clean. An abundance of towels etc with a kitchen well stocked for our stay. The proximity to Nevada City was fantastic. A walk away from coffee shops and restaurants and yet the house was in a quiet street set in its own grounds. Highly recommend a stay there

Heaven!!
Our stay was so amazing. The name "The Barn" doesn't do this little gem justice! It's so adorable. I want to live there! LOVE the grounds, art, patio, hottub and pool. Towels, sheets and pillows were super soft and comfortable (I typically bring my own down pillows, but was very happy with the ones on this bed!) The place was spotless. The redwood trees blew us away. This is a very special property. Walked easily to town, appreciating the recommendations we had been given by the owners and had a perfect stay!

Beautiful Barn Stay
My family and I stayed in the cozy barn for a long weekend. The space was great for our family of 4 and we had all the comforts of home. The grounds of the property are beautiful and provide so much space to play and relax in the sun. The location is a quick walk to town with easy access to restaurants, bars and shopping while also being close to great hiking. The hosts are very responsive and have thought of important details that made the stay great. We would definitely stay again.

Maybe not appropriate for winter stays
Our main problem with the rental was keeping warm. The weather was around freezing outside, and it took many hours for the wall heaters to make the space warm enough to take off our jackets. It's an old building and poorly insulated. For instance, there are holes in the knotty pine paneling in the bedroom and living room where you can actually feel the cold air coming in. In the bathroom, which has external walls and no independent source of heat, there's also a clear draft coming in. There is a small wood stove, but no wood was provided. We called the owner and she was kind enough to direct us to her store of firewood. (For some reason, although the draft was good, we couldn't keep the wood burning -- not helped by the lack of fireplace tools...). A promised portable "dyson heater" was missing. We've run vacation rentals and appreciate how hard it is to take care of all the details. And many things were done right and well. The owner was very communicative and available. Unfortunately, we had a number of other minor complaints that add up to our overall impression that more needs to be provided to make the place worth the rent. A few of them: no bedside tables or reading lights; lights in living room were not bright enough to read by -- or in our opinion, cook by; kitchen garbage can was out, uncovered; no recycling instructions; no dish towels; only three quite small coffee mugs; no hair dryer (a real issue with the cold); promised hot-tub towels were not there; no way to play music. Some of these things we'd consider essential, some are less so but commonly found in rentals in this price range (like a way to play music). FYI, we are a couple; it's a small space and we wouldn't consider it big enough for another two adults.

About the host

We are a San Francisco family who fell in love with Nevada City at first sight when dropping our oldest daughter to sleepaway camp on the Yuba River in July of 2013. We stumbled upon 534 Spring Street that weekend, with it's proximity being only a block behind Nevada City's Broad Street commercial district, and 6 miles from the unbelievably beautiful Yuba River, and we knew that this was somewhere we wanted to retreat from our busy city life in San Francisco.

Why they chose this property

The charm of this property is unparalleled. There is a real sense of privacy and seclusion as it's located on a full-acre with fruit and nut bearing trees, vast landscape and an incredible variety of trees and plant life....yet it's only a 5 minute walk to all of the city's awesome cafes and restaurants, theaters, nightlife, hikes, bike trails, and more. We love it!

What makes this property unique

Our entire property consists of a spacious 3-bedroom home with an additional 2-room in-law, a separate garden studio on the side of the house, and also a large 2-room barn on the rear of the lot. All 4 'compartments' of the property have separate entrances and are very different spaces, yet all updated with new flooring, Restoration Hardware linens, towels and cutlery. All new Beautyrest mattresses throughout the property in all bedrooms, and plush down and down-alternative pillows. Comfort abounds in every element of the property. We redesigned the home, barn, in-law, and garden-studio by blending the modern updates of today's style of living with an influx of locally sourced antiques and accessories, maintaining a regard for the property's eclectic and historical 'cabin-like' past, having been built in 1851 by two Irish brothers who 'struck it rich' in the early days of the 1849 Gold Rush.
