About this property

Historic Marigny lofted residence, open floor plan, near Frenchman & Bourbon St.

This property is newly refurbished and elegant when you walk in, boasting 10 foot ceilings on first floor, a lofted, low ceiling second floor, a non-working fireplace and an enticing staircase leading to the second floor. It also features hardwood floors, three skylights in the lofted bedrooms that make this destination a one and only tribute to New Orleans, the Marigny, Frenchmen Street and the French Quarter. This picturesque hidden gem is for Mardi Gras people, friends who want to party in the 'Big Easy', couples, and a great spot for a guys getaway or girls retreat. It sits within the gated property of an ornate 1800's Victorian Estate Home called "The Painted Lady" and is on the "National Registry of Historical Properties". The neighborhood is blossoming with coffee shops, cafes and unique retail shops. One block south is Saint Claude St with: karaoke, brass Bands, jazz, bars, a theatre, clubs, restaurants, within the block of Marigny and St. Claude alone. A couple blocks down is the new St Roch's Marketplace with all types of food vendors and indoor/outdoor dining and the occasional live jazz performers.. Across the street is the Healing Center offering a holistic market, bookstore and other interesting shops. The French Quarter and the historic Frenchmen St. is 4 blocks toward the Mississippi River and all the best Jazz music plays right there. New Orleans has it all: Super Dome, Final Four, Saints, Pelicans, Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, French Quarter Festival and Bourbon St., VooDoo Fest, and Southern Decadence just to name a few.

Cute little spot in New Orleans
Cute little spot that worked well for us. We are very active and walked to the French Quarters frequently. Others may find the distance a little much and would require other transportation. Several little eateries nearby that were unique and tasty. Although we were home very little there is a nice grocery store less than a block away as well as a Starbucks.

Not as Advertised
This place was very cutely decorated, and in an ok neighborhood. But it was dirty, and not as advertised. First, the purple house shown on the listing is NOT where you stay. You stay in the guest house in back. Second, they advertise two bedrooms, which we wanted since our daughter is with us, but it's not: there is an open loft upstairs with two double/queen beds up there, one on each side of the stairs. Our daughter ended up sleeping downstairs on the couch. Then, the wood floors were filthy, hastily swiped with a cleaner, (they didn't even lift the shower mat or go under the chairs) such that our socks were black with dirt after a half hour. I had to clean the coffee pot before using it. AND, there was NO hand soap or Kleenex anywhere. And there was a very small amount of dish soap left as well. They really need to fire their cleaning staff. Overall, we had a place to sleep and have breakfast, but were not comfortable there. Too bad, this isn't usually the case with Homeaway places. :(

This Was a Tough One; It's Cute
I really wanted to love this place. It was in a nice neighborhood and walking distance of everything. It's the guest house behind the big house. It's quaint and just big enough for four people. There's a sitting area outside. Be careful of the porch though because it's seen better days. If you have more than four people this wouldn't be a great place for you. The owner thought of most of the amenities. It reminded me of a tiny house but a tad bigger as the upstairs loft isn't ideal for anyone taller than 5'5". This is where the compliments end. The owners were nice and communicated with us when they could but I cannot in good faith give them more than two stars as the place was infested with fleas and they rented it out anyway. "We assumed they were gone by now." They were not. Me and my friends got bites as a souvenir for my 31st birthday.

God location property itself could be improved
There were cleanliness issues in regards to dust and bedding. There was a also a non functioning microwave. No lighting at night when getting from the street to the property. The location was convenient.

Marigny - murals, comedy show, and Frenchmen St. all nearby
The location could not have been better for us. We were a mile from French Quarter, but we were walking distance to Frenchmen's St - lots of great live music on the weekend with a little less debauchery than Bourbon St. The nearby grocery, Rober't, was a clean well-appointed store. We enjoyed free Improv comedy at Hi Ho one corner away. also, we loved Fry and Pie! The place was exactly as described. It worked quite well for four mature women who staggered our showers and brought earplugs for the lack of walls between snorers. Oh, the DVD player is brand new. It was replaced within a couple of hours when we couldn't get the old one to work. Only ding was because the check-in details were not sent in a timely manner, and I had to spend a half-hour on hold with VRBO to get a better contact number for the owner. After that, it was the BIG EASY all the way.

Perfect location!
Great place to walk to the. French Quarter and canal street. We had a little trouble when we first arrived but the owner was fantastic and solved our problems within an hour or so. We were even lucky enough to get into the cottage early our first day. Thanks so much for another great stay!! We loved it.

Great place and location
The place was clean, spacious and well equipped especially if you like to do your own cooking. Easy walking distance to just about anything you want - shopping, lots of local bars/cafes, for entertainment you have all the clubs on Frenchmen Street which is only a couple of blocks away, and then the Quarter is just a little farther. Enjoyed my stay and would recommend.

We had a good time in NOLA
The place is cute and close to the French Quarter. The place could use a little touch up paint and a few nails in the porch but overall it's a good lil place. Our only real issue is, the extra blankets aren't being washed. One smelled like throw up and the white one looked like it had pee stains. The place was "surface" clean. Also, the freezer didn't work. We wouldn't stay here again but just because we all ended up sleeping down stairs due to the steep slippery stairs.

Great neighbourhood and location!
Great cottage with everything we needed including covered outdoor porch. Bedrooms are open (loft) but very clean and comfortable. Kitchen well stocked. Living room comfy with lots of brochures and info. Bathroom sufficient but small. Great for my girlfriend and I for our birthday celebratory trip! The outdoor space is wonderful but could use a bit of fixing up and we couldn’t figure out the freezer so no ice. We would definitely rent this cottage again! Thanks!

Charming cottage
This quaint cottage is as described. The loft area is perfect for a family or very close friends. We had a couple of problems that were resolved. The cleaning crew left uneaten food in the frig and microwave. It is a healthy walk to French Quarter but uber averaged $7. The outdoor "patio" area could be darling with a little TLC but is currently pretty distressed. Overall it was well worth the price and served our purpose. I would use this cottage again.

Perfect home base
Situated in the Marigny a block and a half away from St. Claude, Debra and James’ cottage was the perfect home base for our New Orleans sojourn. The cottage is not the one pictured but a guest cottage behind the main house. A (well-worn) courtyard and front porch are a charming addition to what is essentially a spacious studio apartment. The upstairs sleeping area with two double beds separated by the stairway is lacking in headroom or privacy, but that wasn’t a big deal for us. The apartment was clean, well-appointed and the owners were responsive throughout our stay (and after). This is a terrific neighborhood for walking. In a town where parking can be a real hassle (and expense), the free and easily accessible parking was a nice perk. Would stay here again.

This is a lovely place, and within walking distance to the quarter.
It has all of the essentials and then some. The only thing that didn't work for us, and probably was my fault for not paying close enough attention to the home description, was the open floor plan with regard to the bedrooms. There was no privacy. But otherwise, everything was great!

We are from New England with ties to New Orleans. Our cousin lived here for many years working at LSU.
We fell in love with New Orleans at first site: the music , the people , the food and our property. The fact is, the people here are just great; so hospitable and welcoming. The experiences we have had here are heart- warming.
We pride ourselves on having guests enjoy our home. It is centrally located and within walking distance to many great places and attractions. If you choose the "Painted Lady Cottage" you would have made a great decision. It is a clean NOLA style cottage with some local art and a homey feeling. It's a great little place and it will inspire you to love life and be yourself.

Why they chose this property

It's an Historic Property close to everything. The victorian home, called the "Painted Lady" is on the National Registry and a landmark for New Orleans. Many visitors stop by just to take pictures of the beautiful estate home which leads to the guest cottage. The cottage is small with an open lofted area for sleeping . Plus, New Orleans speaks for itself: great night life, shows, tours, entertainment, sporting events, the Garden District, Bourbon Street, the French Quarter and Frenchmen St. With all the goings on here: Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, Southern Decadence, the grand Mississippi River, Jackson Square, The Super Dome, Sugar Bowl, Super Bowl and Final Four, The Saints and The Pelicans, Golf, Fishing, Parades, Parties, People; plus, Tulane and Loyola... it's the best place in the USA for a good time! Also, along the Mississippi at Jackson Square are horse drawn carriages and Café Du Monde, the home of the beignet.

What makes this property unique

Location, location, location and the location is simply fantastic. If you walk one block to St Claude you have jazz clubs, big bands or street performers and restaurants galore usually Cajun style, if you can handle it! If you head in the other direction towards Frenchman St., you will find lots of great local talent in the form of art, music, and street performers. You may even catch a "second line" parade marching down the street. Don't forget the neighborhood cafe and coffee shops that are everywhere. Just west is the Garden District, not far away either. Hop on the trolley at St Claude or take a cab or Uber and stroll down the magnificent St. Charles Ave. and visit the many elegant mansions, shops, hotel bars and diverse restaurants. While just East, don't forget to visit Magazine Street, another popular hangout for a great shopping, dining and entertainment experience. Continue along the trolley route to Audubon Park, the Golf Course and the Zoo. Here you will see the great architecture of Loyola and Tulane Universities. Tour the mansions neighborhoods to get another view of early 1900's New Orleans history and the Garden District. The Homes over there are spectacular, to say the least!
