About this property

Umbria Restored Olive Mill at Castello di Montegiove, Moraiolo

Charming and completely restored 13th century castle olive mill, transformed into a luxurious country house, located just outside the ring wall of Castello di Montegiove.

Montegiove is a lovely and peaceful medieval country village, close to the main communication lines and equidistant of Rome (154 km) and Florence (151 km), it is an ideal base for exploring the historical treasures of Umbria and Tuscany, especially the countryside of the historical provinces of Orvieto, Assisi, Todi, Spoleto, Perugia and Siena.

The house is equipped with satellite television, high speed Internet connection, independent heating, fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, laundry facilities and drying rack. The house is furnished in the traditional style of a central Italian manor house with a tasteful combination of antique and modern furniture. Extra maid service and private cook can also be arranged.

The rental includes heating, weekly change of sheets and towels, normal final cleaning and taxes.
Moraiolo: 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living/dining-room, kitchen, sleeps: 6.

The ground floor is composed of a large living-dinning room with open fireplace and library, a kitchen with access to a small patio, a master double bedroom with view over the valley and a spacious bathroom with shower. The first floor is composed of a long hall, two double bedrooms one with a beautiful view over the valley, the other with French windows pointing towards the castle. A well-designed modern bathroom with marble sink, bath tub and shower.

The garden has a dining area, comfortable deck chairs and a beautiful view over the valley.

The castle of Montegiove has existed since the early 12th century and has in the last four centuries been the property of the Marchesi Misciattelli.

Today, still family-owned, it is the centre of an estate covering nearly 3000 acres of beautiful Umbrian countryside, where oak forests, vineyards, olive fields and arable land blend in total harmony with ancient dry walls and farmhouses built of local stone.

The principal products of the estate are wine, olive oil, cereals, oil seeds, Chianina beef cattle, forage and forest products and. There is abundant wildlife such as boar and deer, and the local flora including truffles and mushrooms. The beautiful surroundings and unspoiled environment make it hard to believe that Montegiove is only 17 km from Italy's main motorway A1 (Milan - Naples), which also connects Rome and Florence.

During your stay in the Montegiove olive mill you will get the opportunity to be the Misciattelli family's private guest and get a guided tour in the winecellar, at the castle and the surrounding estate.

Stunning
We have had a fabulous week in Montegiove. Easily situated for trips out and remote enough for restful days, this is a beautiful spot. We all enjoyed the pool and the castle tour and the grown ups enjoyed the wine! In addition, Rikke and Lorenzo are super hosts, making guests very welcome. Highly recommended.

Incredible place in Umbria
Montegiove is a charming place in the middle of Umbrian countryside. Beautiful castle renovated by Rikke and Lorenzo in a farm estate with cows, vineyard and olive fields. We rented a stylish house next to the castle, comfortable, clean and well furnished. The infinite edge of the pool offers a wide view on a beautiful landscape. Last but not least, Rikke and Lorenzo are very nice hosts : warming welcome, good advice about visits and restaurants, every useful service. We spent a really dream week in Montegiove !

Amazing place to stay! Rikke and Lorenzo were super friendly and helpful hosts.
My friends and I enjoyed the salt water infinity pool, the wine tasting tour, the local people and area, the castle tour, and our lovely castle apartment. Lorenzo and Rikke were super helpful and gave us advice on the surrounding areas and what to see and do. The castle is an excellent place to also chill out and swim in the pool with the beautiful vista view. We all highly recommend this place to stay.

Magnificent Beyond Words
Our family of 5 stayed at Castello Montigiove in September 2017, in the 3 bedroom restored Olive Mill. Prior to our arrival both Rikki & Lorenzo responded to every question and request within 24 hours. Upon arrival we were greeted by Rikki, who was gracious ,welcoming & giving us every reassurance of help and support if needed during our stay. I actually became choked up with happy emotions as the property exceeded my expectations. Our 3 bedroom villa was beautifully decorated, clean and comfortable. It served as our home base for one week as we toured Tuscany and Umbria. The towns we visited include, Pienza, Buonconvento, Cortona, San Gimignano, Siena, Montepulciano, Orvieto, Civita Bagnoregio, Montelcino,,Bagno Vignoni, & Montegiove. The castle was a perfect location to easily tour one or 2 villages per day, allowing us to truly get to know the region. On two occasions Rikki arranged for a local lady to arrive at our villa and prepare dinner for us. Both meals were fabulous and accommodating gluten free dishes for 2 in our party that has celiac disease. Lorenzo and Rikki gave us a tour of the castle, which was a highlight of our stay. The history, stories, magnificent structures, furnishing and more held us wanting more. Lorenzo's tour of the winery was so very interesting and one can tell he loves to talk about his grapes, wine & harvests. We ate it up! The tour ended with a wine tasting. I wish we could purchase his wine in America. We all purchased several bottles of wine and brought a few tins of his olive oil. The castle has a lovely infinity pool that we used on several occasions. It's a short & beautiful walk from our villa. Be sure to take your camera as one can get magnificent photos of the castle as you walk to the pool. We enjoyed more wine or limoncello as we soaked in the sun and cooled off in the water. I feel honored to have meet Rikki & Lorenzo and to have stayed at their lovely property. I can not imagine a better place in which to stay. If we have the good fortune to return to Italy, it is certain we would stay there again. For anyone researching a place to stay, look no farther! You most definitely will not be disappointed. Thank you to Rikki & Lorenzo for their superb hospitality. Cheryl, Bill, Heather, Justin & Jamie Watterson, USA

Not the castle vacation I expected
I was expecting a dream vacation in a castle and was surprised to find that the apartment was closer to the village and the church bell tower than the actual castle. It's overlooking the village street and the local metal shop. It's a twin home sharing walls with the Leccino apartment. It is set on a sloped lot, so the kitchen and living are on the second floor whereas the outdoor dining which we are fond of is down a slope of stairs on the first floor, which eventually got us to only eat inside since lugging all the dishes up and down became cumbersome. The laundry was a little shed, another level lower, where the trash cans were located. The pool was a gorgeous negative edge Infinity salt water pool on the opposite side overlooking the mountains. About 50 steps and a steep slope down. We took the bikes to reach it and it was a lot of fun. A tip to remember is that check in is at 4pm on Saturday when most of the local grocery stores are closed already (they are 30 min each way), so stock up on groceries before you arrive. The kitchen is very well stocked so you can cook quite a variety. Also bring bug spray as there are spiders, mosquitoes and scorpions in the house. The hosts were amazing and very accommodating and made the vacation memorable. Be sure not to miss the tour of the estate.

Visit Castle Montegiove, a medieval castle with 21st century charm and convenience.
We could not have more pleased with our choice of Castle Montegiove as the home base for our visit to Italy. Our hosts Lorenzo and Rikke could not have more gracious and helpful. Our 3br/3ba apartment was clean, spacious and well equipped. On site we were treated to a tour of the castle and Montegiove's state of the art winery. Our men had great fun hunting truffles with our guide and his truffle hunting dog Luna. Our location allowed us to make awesome day trips to nearby Todi, Orvieto, Scarzuola and Castle Greppolischieto. A round trip train ride to Florence (Firenze) gave us plenty of time to see Michaelangelo's David and many other of Florence's historical sites and shops. Our final day we awoke to find the entire valley around us shrouded in fog as our castle above the clouds was bathed in beautiful sunshine. A truly gorgeous day to end our stay. To be able to visit the small villages and towns off the beaten path and experience some of Italy's scenic beauty made Castle Montegiove an excellent choice for us. Many thanks to our hosts for making it all possible.

Absolutely superb
We had an absolutely wonderful, unique, peaceful, and happy holiday here. The hosts Rikki and Lorenzo couldn't have been more helpful, without ever being intrusive. Our accommodation had everything we needed, was clean, comfortable and authentic. Truly amazing surroundings. You do need a car and it is very quiet here, but Rikki and Lorenzo can offer advice and tips about places to visit, eat and shop. One evening we had a local lady come and cook supper for us - great experience. Infinity pool stunning, shared with other guests.

Perfect Family Vacation Spot
Enjoying a vacation abroad with two young boys (4 and 7) can be challenging but not here. We had a fantastic time. Both the hosts (owners) and other guests were absolutely lovely. The location was great. We had a wonderful local woman cook some evening meals for us which was a welcome relief. If Italy was not enough having wonderful homemade meals and wine in the evenings made it heavenly. Did I mention the wine is fantastic, the views breathtaking, the apts well suited and again the people were extremely warm and welcoming. Big thumbs up from the whole family.

Idyllic Umbrian Experience
We had an excellent time at the Castello di Montegiove in a beautiful setting high above the surrounding Umbrian countryside. Our 3BR accommodation was very well equipped and comfortable and made for an excellent base from which to explore the area from Assisi to Orvieto. We balanced our day trip excursions with more relaxing time at home and by the gorgeous infinity pool which had spectacular views over the surrounding area. Rikke and Lorenzo were wonderful hosts, giving us a tour of the castle (their home) and its rich history over the centuries. As the estate also makes its own wine and olive oil we were able to enjoy both. Both our boys (aged 11 and 7) had a great time on their first visit to Italy - you can't go wrong with phenomenal local pizza and gelato with kids.

Paradise
If you seek a true vacation, come here. Rome and Florence are an easy train ride away; Siena, Assisi, hiking, cycling and a world class spa are in the vicinity. You may find, like my family, that you never want to leave the view from Montegiove, and its amazing hospitality.

Fantastic stay
Everything about our stay was fantastic! Thank you for letting us stay ! The accommodation is just like the photos, comfortable, very clean, spacious , beautiful..... everything you need if provided. The swimming pool is just a short walk from the apartment and is great, with plenty of sun loungers. The only negative aspect was lack of private outside space. There are table and chairs outside but you have to walk around the property to the back of it to use them.. we just carried our food and drinks there. We thought that looking at the photos you could access them from the kitchen, but we soon got used to doing this. Last, but not least, our whole stay was made absolutely amazing by our wonderful hosts, Lorenzo, Rikke and their family. They are so welcoming, I cannot speak highly enough of them! It was a pleasure and a privilege to stay here and we highly recommend it .. we shall be back ! Our thanks from all the family.

The best Umbrian vacation
We stayed in one of the apts. in the Olive Mill in March arriving on a windy and rainy day. At first we all thought, what have we done, but it turned out to be the best part of our Italian trip. The 3 bedroom apartment was clean, beautiful and on the most gorgeous hilltop in Umbra. We loved every minute of it. Lorenzo and Rikki were generous, interesting and fun. Lorenzo gave us a tour of the castle and the property and Rikki called many restaurants for us. We loved the family style restaurant in Montegiobbe and cooking in the gourmet kitchen. We were traveling with our son, daughter-in-law and our grandson who was only one. We managed to take day trips to Orvieto, Assissi, Todi and many other smaller towns in Umbria. If I could, I would go back every year.

Amazing, wonderful, and magical!
For anyone wanting the experience of a lifetime, this is the place! My husband and I rented the Olive Mill along with two other couples, and we can't say enough about our wonderful stay here. The Olive Mill is beautiful, fully equipped with everything you could possibly need, the countryside is spectacular, and our hosts went out of their way to make sure that we enjoyed our week. It's hard to describe just how special Montegiove is. When you're staying outside the walls of a castle on top of a mountain overlooking the hills and forests of Umbria, it is truly the experience of a lifetime. We spent the week using this as a home base to explore some of the small hilltop towns like Montegobione as well as more well-known places like Assisi and Orvieto. We absolutely loved everything about it, and I can't say enough about the warm, welcoming attitude of our hosts. They made a very special place magical.

Absolute Paradise - HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Our family of 4 and my son's fiance's family of 4 rented both units for a week in May. It was just wonderful!! Lorenzo and Rikke answered 10's of emails in anticipation of our son's proposal while in Italy - they even bought a bottle of Champagne for us to celebrate. (He actually proposed 3 days earlier in Venice - after all!) The apartments were divine - offering EVERYTHING you could possibly want - plenty of cooking implements/dishes in the kitchen. Rikke had also provisioned both kitchens with a "starter kit" of fresh fruit, tuna, pasta, tomatoes, crackers, jam, cookies and even a bottle of their own olive oil and wine. In the frig, she had placed water, juice and milk as well. Cleaning materials were readily available - even down to candles for the table! She also made reservations for us to go down the short lane to the Wine Bar for wine and appetizers and return for a special dinner on a Thursday night when we arrived - despite most places being closed! They both gave us a tour of the castle on the 4th day there - we so enjoyed hearing about the family castle that they have been renovating over the last few years - and its history! They opened their office for us to make phonecalls - and Rikke even arranged for us a last minute reservation to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence that saved us waiting in line for 2 hours! They were SO SWEET and totally accommodating to our needs! The apartments are gorgeous - even equipped with internet and satellite tv (we were even able to pick up Fox News!!). In one apartment, a large yard with lounge chairs and a huge family table for picnics was conveniently right off the kitchen - (which was so pretty with a domed ceiling!) In each apartment was a binder full of maps, brochures and information on what to do, see and where to eat. The castle is way up on a hill overlooking a paradise of lush fields, grape arbors and olive trees - far from the madding crowd of tourists - you feel like the Lords and Ladies of the Manor! We almost wish we had a extra day just to sit "home" and relax! Everyday, we were off in our 9 person rented van to another little town in Tuscany or to Rome/Florence. The train is about 20 minutes down the hill in Fabro - it was about $30 roundtrip a person - we took the train to Rome, but drove to Florence - BIG MISTAKE - take the train, parking is awful in the cities and pretty far away! Don't miss ORVIETO farmer's market and church, Montepulciano and Assisi! We LOVED it there!!!

About the host

Host profile image
In 2002 we moved from Copenhagen in Denmark, where we both grew up, to Montegiove to take over the daily management of the family estate “Castello di Montegiove”. We have never regretted this decision, even though the first years in Montegiove were not at all like a fairytale. The castle had to be completely restored; the roofs all had big holes so we spent all rainy days running around with pots and pans to pick up the water. Today the castle has been through a thorough and respectful renovation. Lorenzo: I spent almost all my childhood summers together with my grandfather in Montegiove, following daily life at the estate and in the wine cellar. I still recall adventuring round in the castle and walks in the splendid and unspoiled nature around Montegiove. I always hoped, that one day, I could take care of the estate, and that happened after years of study at the “Royal Veterinarian and Agricultural University” and the “University of Aberdeen” ending up with a Ph.D. and a short carrier as scientist and assistant professor, before moving to Italy. Rikke: I worked with pattern making and designs in the fashion industry before moving to Italy. My big passion is decorating and putting things in order so moving to a place like this where everything needed a loving hand has been a fantastic challenge for me. Today I am the practical person in the household making all ends meet for our busy modern family. We still feel so lucky waking up in the morning and looking out at the beautiful valley, and we are never getting tired of the absolute silence and peace that is so rare to find in the modern world of today. Sometimes the clouds are hanging lower than Montegiove and it feels like we are on an island in the middle of the sea.

Why they chose this property

Lorenzo and his sister inherited the property from their grandfather Paolo. The castle has been in the Misciattelli family since 1780.

What makes this property unique

It is very easy to travel gluten free in Italy. We can provide gluten free kitchen tools and an oven for our Celiac guests and a guide to gluten free restaurants and shopping in the area.
