About this property

Lux/Downtown Alpine/Spacious Historic 'Bottle House' 4 Beds, near Marfa

Located at 110 West Murphy Street, the former (1890 - 1920) Historic 'Bottling Works' (see history at end) is a luxurious & spacious, completely renovated/modern 1,300 sq. ft. home with 3 bedrooms DISCLAIMER: 3rd bedroom is actually the very large Living Room/Dining Room/TV Room as you enter with a twin day bed/couch ...(4 beds total: 1 queen, 1 full, 2 twin)1 bath, fully stocked kitchen (gas stove, dishwasher, microwave, large fridge, washer and dryer), central air/heat. Again, note that the day bed with 2 twins is located in the very large front room as you enter with the living and dining room on the far side.
The dog ($25 pet fee per dog) and child friendly home is located across the street from the railroad tracks/Amtrak so there is train noise. I provide individually wrapped earplugs for sensitive sleepers, as does the Holland Hotel 1 block away (the "nicest" hotel in town:) There is high speed internet. Large flat screen TV with DVD player and loads of movies. No cable. The entire house is all yours/complete privacy. There are concrete floors throughout with comfy rugs. The Bottle House is filled with art (lots of Texas artists) and charm.
The Bottle House is very spacious with 2 private front entrances and 1 back door. Dining under the shaded ramada outside or star gazing in the backyard are fave activities.
As you enter the living room, there is a day bed/couch with 2 twin beds to your right (one pulls out easily from beneath the top mattress and can be moved anywhere). Down the hall to the left is the master bedroom with a queen sized bed. The bedroom off the master has a it's own side entrance/exit and full bed and large closet. It is accessed from the master through a sliding door. All beds have soft sheets, light down comforters (nights are chilly in the high desert) and down pillows
The Bottle House is 2 doors down from several fun shops and restaurants where you can dine on healthy take out food, enjoy sunset views from the recently restored Historic Ritchey Hotel "Wine Saloon" 2nd floor deck (1/2 block down on Murphy St), or enjoy the Saturday Farmer's Market at the Visitor's Center 4 blocks away. These businesses are all within a 5-10 min walk from Historic Murphy Street. The place is incredibly well located for exploring on foot and street parking is super safe!
Holland Street is one block north of Murphy Street and it is the other main street (on the north side of the tracks: Amtrak:) Alpine used to be named 'Murphyville.' Murphy street used to be 'Main Street' before the advent of the railroad and this artsy street is undergoing revitalization in downtown Alpine with murals, restaurants and galleries.
Alpine is located at the 'hub of the wheel' with the neighboring communities of Marfa (West/huge minimalist art scene:Donald Judd), Marathon (East/Gage Hotel), Fort Davis (North: McDonald Observatory/Historic Fort) are approx. 20 minutes away in any given direction.
Holland Street boasts: The Holland Hotel (1 block) with a great bar and restaurant, the Reata restaurant (upscale: 3 blocks), the world famous Railroad Blues honkytonk pub/music venue (3 blocks),the Rangra movie theatre (1 block), several art galleries/fabulous shops ; and locally owned Front Street Books/Cedar coffee shop with the best West Texas 'Cow Dogs' (food truck) next door (including vegan:).
Sul Ross State University is about 8 blocks east on Holland. Sul Ross has a great Museum of the Big Bend and a huge indoor salt water pool that is open to the public and costs $2. There are also some great hiking trails behind the university that give you an amazing 360 view of the country (15-20 minutes up). There is a desk on the top of Sul Ross Hill that has a notebook in it to record your ruminations - fun activity!
See if you can find the desk and the "Bicycle Tree nearby" (most folks can't :) Rule of thumb: keep the dome house in your sights:) The skies in our country are unfathomably clear and beautiful so make sure to schedule a Star Gazing party at McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis about 45 minutes away. Our backyard is also a great spot for a more relaxed experience of star gazing:) The Fort in Fort Davis is also a lovely spot.
Balmorhea boasts the largest spring fed public pool in the state, with amazing cottage them out! (via Texas State Parks website)
Big Bend National Park/the Mexican border are about 45 minutes south. (Terlingua Ghost Town boasts the Starlight Theatre/Restuarant, Desert Sports runs river trips/biking trips: great folk)
Big Bend Ranch State Park tends not to be as busy as BBNP and has a wonderful (and cheap) bunkhouse for accommodations OR the old adobe ranch headquarters that is dreamy. Great camping, hiking, biking etc..The Solitario region is awesome and one of our fave spots.
Other:
Blue Water Grocery Store for organic food on Hwy 118 south.
Saturdays: Farmer' s Market from 9 - 12 is 4 blocks away at Visitor's Center.
The old Ritchey Hotel Saloon right down the street from you
My friend and helper Jessica 432 386 5076 is your go-to person if you have any immediate needs when here or I am a text away :) Hubby Hiram is available at 432 386 3550.
Call/email me with any questions.
Art work in the Bottle House is by Woody Farris (Fredericksburg), Tom Curry (Gallery behind the bottle house), Shiloh Sibley-Curtforth (photography), Bob Bell (Alpine), Karen Nakakihara (Alpine: pottery with whimsical animal designs), Liz Sibley (mosaics- Alpine/Austin), Charles Bragg, Butch Hancock, Saul Steinberg and many others.

Wonderful and Comfortable

We had a mini Spring Break trip to Alpine and really enjoyed our stay at The Bottle House. We did a bit of a technology detox with a puzzle and card games, and The Bottle House was perfect for some down time. We sat on the back porch for cards and then ventured in to the glass top round table for the puzzle. Pro Tip: a glass top round table is perfect for team puzzle assembling. The beds were very comfortable and we all slept very well. We definitely recommend The Bottle House, and are looking forward to returning for another trip.

Little peace of heaven

I would stay there many times over, that was the best stay I’ve ever had, the neighborhood was peaceful and the neighbors were very friendly. Nice outdoor restaurant around the corner, with excellent Mexican food!!! Went to the farmers market on Saturday, came out with some nice purchases. Met the owner, very personable, friendly and kind, I appreciated her stopping by! Thank you so much for letting me stay in your little house! Pam

Bottle House Valentine's Day 2015

We had a wonderful experience staying Valentine's weekend at the Bottle House in Alpine, Texas. The location worked great for us. We could walk around town at ease. The interior of the Bottle House was comfortably furnished and decorated with interesting art (check out the Butch Hancock piece). Although ear plugs are available we loved listening to the trains. The Saturday Farmer's Market down the street was a plus. We were the lucky couple to be the first to enjoy the Bottle House. Thank you to our hosts!!!

Great base for exploring the region!

Alpine is a cute town w/ enough basic amenities to get you through a week in an otherwise extremely rural region. Unless......you unexpectedly get over a foot of snow like we did, and there is no Wal-Mart, Target, or anywhere else to buy snow gear within 100s of miles! No worries! My crazy children were content playing in the snow w/ a hoodie as their warmest layer! The house was cozy enough that we were content hunkering down for the few days that we were snowed in. The kitchen came pre-stocked w/ way more supplies than your typical AirBnB, which was nice. And the yard was great for our two pups, one of whom got to play in snow for the first time! Big Bend is a good hour or more drive from Alpine, but it is a gorgeous drive(esp if you take the route through Terlingua), so not too burdensome. Make sure to explore the area closer by, such as Davis Mt State Park and Fort David National Historic Site. All in all, the airbnb and the entire area exceeded our expectations!

Central location. Pet friendly property.

Easy and timely communication with/from the owner. Property was as described. Clean, comfortable, easy walk to businesses and restaurants. We chose this place because it was the closest pet friendly property we could find to Big Bend NP. We also enjoyed visiting Fort Davis, Marfa and Marathon as Alpine is right in the middle. Overall it was a good choice and we had a wonderful time. Two drawbacks though. First, the train noise really was a problem for us. It would have been fine if the train had passed through and been gone in a few minutes. It's an entirely different story for it to sit and rumble at the station (which is directly across the street) for an hour or two at 4 in the morning. When it wasn't there it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop and we loved that. Second, there is a fenced back yard which is great for pets. But there are so many stickers in the dry, dead grass that ours wouldn't go out there willingly. I know it's the fall and it's the high desert so we expected dry, dead grass but the stickers are literally everywhere. The owners take great care of this property otherwise though so the good may outweigh the bad for some.

Awesome & Interesting!

The Bottle House was so unique with all the art and things to look at and read about. It was located right on Murphy Street which made it easy to get to anything you needed to. Although you can hear the train during the day, we never heard it while we slept. BTW, you'll probably hear the train in most places you stay in Alpine, LOL! Our dogs and grandson loved the big backyard. The beds were super comfortable and the whole place was very homey with plenty of room. The house was stocked with everything you might need in regards to the staples.... seasonings, coffee+, bath items and of course all you need to use in the kitchen. The only drawback was the television. We like to watch tv in the evenings & the grandson likes cartoons in the morning. Unless you know how to work the Apple TV connection, you're out of luck. It would have been great if the tv had a second HDMI connection that our laptop would work with so we could watch Directv through it. (it would not work through the HDMI connection that AppleTV was into). When you're older, a non-techy and have your grandson with you.... we have times we want to watch tv. Liz is a great hostess. She was prompt to answer any questions we had and very nice. All in all, it was a great stay and we will be back!!! (PS: Liz, I'll be glad to come for a stay and switch out you tv and such so the older folks can easily work it, just call me!)

Well-equipped spot, centrally located

We enjoyed our stay in this nicely restored and fully stocked space that is within walking distance to pretty much all of Alpine. A true home away from home which is nice when you've been driving around all day. My only issue is that there isn't actually a third bedroom. The third sleeping space is a trundle bed in the living room. Also, the second bedroom requires walking through the master. We were in Alpine on business and the lack of privacy was not what I had in mind when I booked. The layout is described in description, but I didn't read closely - it would be helpful to list it as a 2/1 that sleeps 6. Also described in the text, but worth an extra mention, the trains are REALLY LOUD! I'm sure they are heard all over Alpine but this spot is next door to the crossing and they blare in the middle of the night. Thank goodness for the case of earplugs.

Cute little spot

Pros: 1) Liz was very prompt and welcoming in her correspondence 2) Everything in the house was well labelled and therefore it made the stay very easy 3) To gain entry into the house was easy and straightforward 4) Location was convenient and the train noise was not a bother for us (we travel with white noise machines) 5) Kitchen had all the essentials we were needing 6) Beds were comfy and sheets were soft 7) Lovely wall art throughout the home 8) Plenty of towels 9) Good set up for a family of four as the bedrooms adjoin Cons 1) My biggest complaint is that the floors were not clean. We usually take our shoes off inside but we had to keep them on during our stay. I think some of the issue is endemic to west texas and I think the concrete/rug combo might be a challenge as well. If you stay here, I recommend bringing house shoes to wear inside. 2) Discloser- I am a bit of a clean freak. I didn't think the house was super clean but it was adequate. 3) Kitchen was a bit smaller than I anticipated and more rustic and fridge is in the utility room 4) Generally not childproofed (kitchen has open shelves below)

Beautiful, Comfortable House!

Super easy lock box check in, large beautiful space with very comfortable bed, furniture, super cool art throughout, good linens, fluffy towels, nice patio, fenced grassy yard for dog (and food, water dish!) Very nice bathroom with lovely shower/great water pressure. Washer/dryer, compact but perfectly redone kitchen with everything needed to cook a meal (even nice sharp knives). A block or two to restaurants, shops. The train noise was absolutely not an issue-I love the sound of a train- and only heard it a couple times during out 2 day stay. This is THE PLACE to stay in Alpine!!!
