About this property

Spacious Apartment In Bloomsbury, Walking Distance To City & West End. Sleeps 5.

The apartment occupies the top two floors of an old Georgian townhouse in Bloomsbury, a quiet, elegant corner of central London, close to Russell Square, Kings Cross-St Pancras and Chancery Lane tube stations. You are in the centre of London, close enough to walk to most of the places you'll want to visit, short bus or tube rides to other tourist must-sees, but this is a quiet, secure part of town with little night time traffic or noise. The most common phrases in our visitor's book are 'great location' and 'we'll be back'.

Built in the 1790s, this historic building boasts all the luxuries of a modern home, including a fully-equipped kitchen (dishwasher, oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer plus lots of pots, pans and utensils for cooking), washing machine, satellite TV and DVD player, free wi-fi, power shower and modern bathroom.

The spacious living room is light and airy with two large sofas plus a chair that converts into a comfortable single bed. The TV has multiple satellite channels including Sky Sports and there is a dvd player and a few DVDs. Our bookshelf is stuffed with books which feature London, guidebooks for London and maps for you to take with you as you explore the city. We also have a few toys for young children and games. Two large sash windows with Georgian wooden shutters look out to the historic street below.

The adjoining kitchen is light, spacious and has a dining table and six chairs. It has everything you would expect in a modern kitchen; oven, hob, large refrigerator, separate freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave oven, kettle, toaster and two coffee makers. The kitchen has plenty of crockery and cutlery, cooking utensils, baking trays, saucepans, a wok, pots, pans and everything you need to make a family supper and eat in. We also have a flask and some sandwich boxes for you to make lunch and take it out with you (ideal if you are feeding a family).

A short but steep flight of stairs leads up to two bedrooms and a bathroom. The bathroom has a bath and separate shower, with plentiful hot water. The basin has a mirror over it and the heated towel rail and underfloor heating keeps the bathroom warm and cosy.

The large master bedroom has a king-size double bed and a single bed with large wardrobe, feature mirror and Victorian chest of drawers. Two bedside tables with drawers each have a touch operated lamps. There's an alarm clock too. The master bedroom can sleep three people, but is usually used for two adults.

The second bedroom has two single beds (adult sized) with Victorian chest of drawers, hanging space for clothes and mirror. Both bedrooms have 'black-out' blinds so that you are not woken by early morning sun.

A cot (baby crib) and highchair are available on request (please bring your own bedding for the baby's cot). Bed linen and towels included.

A hairdryer, an iron and ironing board are provided, along with an umbrella.

A good choice of restaurants are within a 5 minute walk and there is a large Waitrose supermarket 10 minutes walk away in The Brunswick Shopping Centre. A smaller Co-Op supermarket is a convenient 3 minute walk on Grays Inn Road.

This is an ideal holiday home for a family or friends looking to explore London from a central base.

John Street is a six minute walk from Russell Square tube station (subway) or Chancery Lane tube station. We are a 15 minute walk to Kings Cross-St Pancras stations (tube and Eurostar trains to France). We will send you full directions when you book. Just let us know which airport or train station you arrive at.

Getting Here - Air: It is an easy journey from London Heathrow Airport to John St, as the local tube (subway or underground) station runs directly to the airport. From there it's a 6 minute walk to the apartment. From other London airports (Gatwick, Stansted, Luton or City airports), you can take the train into the centre of London and make a short tube or taxi journey to the apartment. We will send you full directions when you book.

Getting Here - Rail: John Street is a fifteen minute walk from the mainline stations, Kings Cross and St Pancras International where the Eurostar service for Paris, Lille and Brussels now departs. Euston Station is a few minutes further away. It is a short bus ride from London Bridge and Waterloo stations. Paddington is a tube ride away.

No hidden extras: Price quoted includes VAT (sales tax), bed linen, towels and cleaning. There are no hidden extras to pay to the property owner.

ALLERGY SUFFERERS: we have blinds (no curtains), wooden floors in the bedrooms (the only carpet is in the hallway) and can supply feather-free bedding on request.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE COMING? - we have six sleeping places but as we only have one bathroom we do not let the apartment to six people. If you are a party of five, please state if you would prefer to have three people sharing the largest bedroom (in one double and one single bed) OR one person sleeping in the living room. We will only make up beds for the number of people you tell us are staying.

If you have any questions about the apartment, the local area or London generally, please get in touch by email (you’ll get my email address when you book) or by using the VRBO platform.

Superb location
The apartment was in a fabulous location. It was close to several bus and train routes. The area was very quiet just after Christmas. The stairs are hard work, especially the flight up to the bed rooms and bathroom. Having said that, we would stay there again.

Perfect for us!
The apartment in Bloomsbury was perfect for our 10 night stay in London. Our family felt at home and the apartment had plenty of room for all of us. The description of the apartment was very accurate and the location was ideal being close to multiple tube/train stations and the Brunswick Centre that has plenty of places to eat and a good size supermarket. Thoroughly recommend this apartment for anyone’s stay in London. Big thanks to Melissa for accommodating our family.

Spacious apartment in great location, excellent host
This is a lovely spacious apartment with all the amenities you need for a great stay in London. It's very central and close to buses and the underground, plus it's walking distance to the West End and theatre district. The host was flexible and accommodating, and had great communication and gave very clear instructions. It is on the second floor of a Georgian town house so quite a few stairs to get to it, which we found fine, but worth bearing in mind if you have any mobility issues.

A super convenient & comfy stay.
We stayed at 22 John Street, from 28th Dec to 10th Jan 2019. We found the location super convenient, as we were within 5-7min walk to 2 major tube lines (Russell Square on Piccadilly Line or Chancery Lane on Central Line). Additionally, 2 great pubs within stones throw, we could receive the apartment’s WiFi from one of them. Waitrose shopping near Russell Square Station, Covent Garden / Leicester Square within a 15min walk. The apartment had every thing we required. Was very clean, warm, comfortable and cosy for us Aussies (not acclimatized to the English winter). Will definitely come back.

The Best of Everything
Our family of 5 had THE BEST time staying in this spacious apartment. Located in the gorgeous area of Bloomsbury, the apartment is situated within easy walking distance to a choice of Underground stations, primarily Russell Square Station which is right on the Piccadilly Line and therefore easy access direct from Heathrow Airport. Excellent supermarket and numerous restaurants nearby. Super central spot so close to Covent Garden, West End etc, that we often walked home after being out. The best part was how quiet and peaceful it was. EXTREMELY comfortable beds and everything you need. Washing machine was very helpful. We stayed during very warm weather and the apartment was beautiful. Melissa, the host, was so friendly and helpful. Loved it so much that we are booking it for next year!

Spacious, comfortable and great location
My family of five stayed here for a week during December. Melissa was delightful and a very helpful host. The apartment was quiet, clean, warm and spacious and a short walk to Russell Square station. We loved our stay at Bloomsbury, for our young family, it felt very homely and Melissa was extremely accommodating with arrival and departure times. The kitchen/laundry facilities were greatly appreciated - we ate out some nights but when required I was able to cook a family meal with all the utensils and facilities in the kitchen. The beds were super comfortable and linen provided was lovely, clean and warm. Bloomsbury is a fantastic London base, which we all enjoyed very much. It really made our London stay super easy and memorable. We will definitely look up Bloomsbury again on our next family visit to London. Just a little word of warning, there are a number of stairs which could be difficult for those with mobility issues. However we didn't have an issue with the children (and or us). We wouldn't hesitate in recommending Bloomsbury to any family - it is a really spacious, comfortable and well located apartment.

Great family sized apartment centrally located
This apartment was great for our family of five (children aged 13, 11, 9). It was neat and spacious, which was very welcome at the end of a long trip in hotel rooms and smaller sized apartments. We stayed for 3 weeks and were very comfortable. The apartment had everything we needed to self cater, Foxtel and WiFi. The one downside was that the WiFi connection did tend to drop out occasionally and sometimes could be difficult to connect to. The apartment was quite centrally located. We used the tube mostly to get around. Chancery Lane on the Central Line was just a 5 minute walk away and very convenient. Russell Square on the Piccadilly Line was just a 5 minute walk in the other direction. There was also a great Waitrose supermarket and shopping centre at Russell Square, and heaps of other shops, restaurants and pubs nearby. Kings Cross / Pancras Eurostar rail station was only a 10-15 minute walk. Euston Station and a car rental agency was only 15-20 mins walk. The British Museum was only a 5-10 mins walk away and the Charles Dickens museum was just down the road. All other attractions, you would probably want to catch a tube or bus, although we did walk down to Oxford Street a couple of times.

Nice spacious apartment in a good location
We really enjoyed our stay here for a week. There's a lot of space in the apartment which is a huge improvement over staying in tiny hotel rooms and having a full kitchen is great for handling left overs from all of the great restaurants that are not far away. It's about a 15 minute walk from a bunch of different tube stations and just a block or so away from a bus line that goes straight to Borough Market. The hosts very thoughtfully have a lot of plug adapters in all of the key locations which made it very easy for us to use our devices with non-UK plugs. Just a couple of things to be aware of. First, there are a lot of stairs involved in this unit so I wouldn't recommend it for people with troublesome knees. Toting heavy suitcases up 3 flights of stairs was a chore, but we only needed to do it once each way so this wouldn't stop us from returning. Second, the WiFi connection is pretty spotty in many of the rooms which was a bit of an issue for us since we use our devices a lot but did spend some time with our host to help improve it and left a couple of suggestions that would be pretty easy to fix this so hopefully that will be resolved soon. We will definitely consider returning to this location in a future trip to London.

This apartment is owned by Electric Marketing, a database marketing company set up in 1991 by Melissa Mackey. Electric Marketing's offices are on the ground and first floors of the building, the apartment is on the second and third floors. You will share a front door and hallway with our office team during weekdays, but no one will visit the apartment during your stay unless you come down to the ground floor and ask us for help. This means that there is always someone on site to help you if you have any problems eg light bulb needs replacing or something is broken. Equally we are aware that most people want to be allowed to enjoy their holiday in private and we won't visit unless there is a serious issue that needs to be fixed. If you have a problem at the weekend, our contact phone numbers are in a folder of useful information in the living room.

Why they chose this property

There is no doubt that John Street in Bloomsbury is a smart part of town, close to Grays Inn and full of barristers' chambers and legal firms. As well as the lawyers, our near neighbours are the Charles Dickens Museum, noted actors and artists as well as the ITV news studios on Grays Inn Road.

John Street and adjoining Doughty Street are steeped in history as these houses have stood for 250 years.

It is a safe and secure part of London, walking distance to the West End and to the City of London, close to shops and restaurants and yet quiet at night so that you can sleep easily.

If you are coming to London for reasons other than pleasure, John Street is walking distance from Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College Hospital, British Library, London School of Economics and University College London.

What makes this property unique

You are in the centre of London, close enough to walk to most of the places you'll want to visit, short bus or tube rides to other tourist must-sees, but this is a quiet, secure part of town with little night time traffic or noise. The most common phrases in our visitor's book are 'great location' and 'we'll be back'.
