Folks often ask me why I choose to be on the sound side instead of the ocean. It's a matter of personal preference, of course. But here are my thoughts:
Sound vs. Ocean side...
Sound side is more serene, relaxed and quiet and you don't feel like you are sharing your vacation with hundreds of other beach goers. Having said that if you want to mix and match you can always cross to the Ocean side - takes 5 min.
I am not an early riser, so even though I love sunrises on the ocean side I am not usually up that early to enjoy them, especially when on vacation. This makes the sunset displays off our deck one of the biggest highlights of this location. We are right on top of the water which is an experience in and of itself while the ocean side homes are usually set back from the water quite a bit and the beach is not private.
If you have children in your party, depending on how old they are, being on the Sound side can be a great advantage - no violent waves or rip currents to worry about. They can simply walk into the calm water and swim, play and enjoy. You also get the homey feel and a contained space where it is easier to watch the kids as it's just you and your family on the beach. Teenagers may want to do some kayaking, windsurfing, sailing or kiteboarding - all better suited for the sound side. Gradual, even and shallow water entry in front of the property are ideal for these watersports.
I also like the fact that you can walk to the local fisherman village, watch the sailboats and the simple life that goes on there - just a different feel, more local, less touristy. It's a matter of preference.
If you or your kids/family are into kitesurfing/windsurfing/kayaking/sailing - Sound side is the place to be! Prevailing winds are side-on-shore SW and the water is relatively shallow making it a safer environment for the wind/water sport enthusiasts to enjoy their hobbies. For surfers on the other hand, Oceanside location is certainly the place to be and is less that a mile away. A popular fishing location - Avon peer is also about a mile away.
All that said, some folks prefer Oceanside locations and there are certainly plenty of gorgeous spots to choose from! Those are usually quite a bit more expensive though.

About Avon:

Avon is rustic and relaxed. It is a kiteboarding and windsurfing mecca due to ideal wind and beach conditions.
Avon is an old Hatteras Island village that has become synonymous with recreational surf fishing, and the Avon pier is a hot spot for those in pursuit of big gamefish like Red Drum. Just north of Buxton, this once tiny village of watermen and their families has grown to be a highly coveted vacationing experience with pristine, natural beaches and beautiful rental cottages. But Avon still retains its tight knit community feel. Even though you can find fantastic seafood restaurants, a supermarket, and some of the conveniences of home, a rustic atmosphere still permeates Avon.
You may hear Avon referred to as Kinnakeet by some locals. It was the name local tribe of Algonkian Indians gave the area, and later adopted by settlers. But in 1883, the U.S. Postal Service redubbed the village Avon, like they did with most of the Hatteras Island communities.
On the sound side of Avon, on the western side of Highway 12, you may see kiteboarders performing amazing aerial stunts and windsurfers racing across the surface of the Pamlico Sound. Nearby Kite point and Canadian Hole were named after the popularity of this public access spots with kiteboarders and with our visitors from the north. In the early spring, many watersports lovers flock here from Canada, Massachusets, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and other points north, because it is still quite cold at home and these enthusiastic athletes can't wait to have a little fun on the water.

Great place to get away

This was the perfect house for our extended family to get together for a week! Everything that we needed was provided - pool, hot tub, bikes, kayak, paddle board, life jackets, hammocks, plenty of games, puzzles, and books, and a well stocked kitchen. The view of the sound (and sunsets) behind the house was amazing! The owner was also incredibly responsive to any questions we had during our stay. We would absolutely stay here again!

70th BDay Celebration

Great Location! Timely response from owner and management company. Beautiful views! Home needs a great deal of TLC. Carpets beyond filthy, mold in fridge ( cleaning folks came to clean it up mid week), throw rugs placed over kitchen flooring to cover up gaps in tiles. The rugs were very slippery causing concern for our guests. Hot tub cover is falling apart. Bikes were unusable, some of the kayaks were unusable. No usable beach chairs on property. Home could be amazing if some major attention were given at this time to the details.

Amazing Sunsets and Bayside Waterfront

We had an amazing week. Everything was ready for us upon arrival, clean and we'll appointed. The kitchen is more than well supplied with pots and pans and extras like spices and olive oil. The view from the great room out over the bay was beautiful. We were able to see the sunset while enjoying dinner on the deck over looking the water. There was a great selection of books to enjoy during our stay. The kids loved being able to use the paddle boards and kayak every morning and spent a lot of time playing pingpong. They brought their bikes and found it a great area for them to safely ride. We found it easy to find beach access and spent three afternoons at three different nearby beaches. Food Lion is nearby, an easy 5 minutes to grab last minute items. One night we used the grill which is available for guests. The hot tub was enjoyed by all especially after it became chilly in the evening. It was clean and we'll maintained. I especially appreciated the outside shower that everyone could use before coming back into the house from the beach. There are two washers and two dryers to keep up with laundry. Natalie responded right away to any questions we had and was welcoming and checked in to be sure everything was okay during the week. We would definitely choose to stay here again.

Amazing from the beginning!

We had a group of 14 for the week we stayed at this wonderful place. This was the first time any of us had visited the Outer Banks and a wonderful time was had by all. We were all in love from the minute we drove up. The house is so much more in person than in the pictures . It was clean, open and plenty big enough for the entire group. The view and the sunsets will leave you speechless. The pool and hot tub were extra icing on the top. The men fished every day right out the back door. The kids found hermit crabs and experienced kayaking and loved it! You can, literally, step off the deck into the water, which is clean and clear. We met Mark on our first day. What a great guy is! He and my husband talked fishing and Mark gave some great advice. Any question we had Natalie responded immediately. The town of Avon is also pretty cool. We were able to get fresh seafood right around the block, eat awesome crab legs less than a mile away and the Food Lion is close by. We took the kids to Orcracoke via the ferry, arrive for the ferry before 8 am or plan on waiting. I could go on and on but suffice it to say we had no negatives about anything our entire trip. Natalie and Mark were both helpful and very kind. We cannot wait to go back.

Awesome view, large home, great time!

To start off, Natalie was amazing when it came to any questions or concerns we had. When we arrived, Alana was in the home cleaning, which wasn't a problem, and was able to provide us with what was needed during our stay as far as sheets, cleaning supplies, etc. We did notice, however, there were not enough fitted nor flat sheets for the beds, but that was not a big concern, we didn't let that effect our stay. The bunk bed room, my 15 year old niece who isn't even 100lbs, fell through the bed because of a board that was broken. We were able to fix the bed, then it happened again. We fixed it again, and all was well. This was not a big deal to us, again, we weren't going to let it effect our stay. You can see where the property lines are from the large, NO TRESPASSING sign posted along with the rope on the neighbors property. We were however disappointed, that we were unable to utilize the private beach because it had not been cleaned and was covered in feet of sea grass. That didn't stop us from enjoying the water! There were tons of activities to keep the kids occupied throughout the house and we all had a wonderful time. There was plenty of space for everyone. My fiancé noticed there was no tv in the master bedroom on the main level, but who needs a tv when on vacation?! Overall, our OBX vacation this year was one for the books! There was plenty of room, plenty to do, comfy beds for relaxing after a long day of being busy, clean, and the bedrooms are properly spaced so we put the kids in the downstairs bedroom and the bunk bedroom and didn't hear them! Everyone enjoyed their stay and we will definitely rent from Natalie again!

Second stay at this house; great location, amazing views!

This is my second stay at this house; first time with Natalie as the owner and manager of the house. My review of the house from the first time I stayed here is below. I wanted to give an update on the house since its under different ownership, plus the game room was not part of the rental this time, so thought it was important to clarify that. Overall, we loved staying in this house: great views of the sound, wonderful sunsets, most appliances updated (love the water filter in the fridge door), great location in Avon (in the Village, close to restaurants, the pier, Food lion), lots of dishes, utensils, and storage space for food in kitchen, nice furniture, very comfortable beds, amazing pool and hot tub, lots of comfortable outdoor furniture, great communication with Natalie (she responds quickly to texts), and nice 2 person kayak provided at the house. She even gave us use of a standup paddle board and crab pot, which was great! We had 12 people staying here (6 adults, 6 kids) and there was plenty of room for everyone, including at the dining room table and the bar. It was great that sheets and towels are provided (just have to wash, dry and put them away when you leave). We did have a few issues and this is where I think going with a management company would have some benefits and why I gave it 4 stars. The house wasn't cleaned until after 5:30pm on check-in day (I was surprised to find it dirty in the kitchen and bathrooms when we arrived alittle before 4; if I had known the cleaning lady was coming later, it would have made me feel better. No big deal in the end); dishwasher worked very poorly so we hand washed and used paper plates the whole week (Natalie was getting it replaced but they couldn't deliver until the next Monday); many light bulbs were not working, could use a bit more lighting in some of the bedrooms; the slats of the bottom bunk twin bed kept falling down (note my 40lb daughter would just sit on it...they were cut just a bit too short) so we just put the bed on the ground. The deck around the pool is new, but could use alittle follow up maintenance (we pounded down some nails that popped up and removed a huge splinter sticking up). I know no rental house is perfect and undergoes lots of use, so we understand these are minor issues and we didn't mind them. Overall, we had an amazing vacation and are glad we found this house.

Everything We Needed

The house was very spacious, plenty of room for our family of 15. It was the first time we have ever stayed on the sound side and we loved using the standing paddle boards and kayaks. Our children had a ball on them. They were also able to fish and we’re very excited about that as well.

Our group of 16 really enjoyed our stay. This house was perfect for multiple families coming together. Location was excellent and the kids really enjoyed the pool and easy access into the sound. Wonderful House

Lots of bedrooms for all of us. Loved having pool on property, it is a very nice clean pool. Didn’t use hot tub (weather very warm!) but it is also a nice feature at cooler part of year. Pier and outside shower. The sound is very peaceful to be on—views were amazing from sound side of house—-Manager easy to contact and very prompt response time. Large kitchen. Large laundry room. Highly recommend this home . Located near restaurants and grocery too!

Glorious Stay on the Calm Side of Avon

We had an amazing vacation. The type when you're not ready to leave. It's right on the sound so if you are into paddleboarding, kayaking (like me) or windsurfing (like my husband), this is the place to stay. We had four kids who loved the pool and exploring in the waters right next to the house. It's so relaxing to sit on the back deck and just stare out into the water with a good book. The pier is only a mile away so trips to the beach are pretty easy. We only went a couple times though because everything we needed was right here. The owner was very responsive and communicative. She clearly wants to make sure you have an enjoyable stay. 10 out of 10! Would definitely recommend.

Perfect for a large family stay.

The property site on the Sound was beautiful. We kayaked, as well as did stand up boarding, and windsurfing in the Sound. The house offered such comfortable areas for our large group. Great gathering spaces, but also great getaway spots. Perfect for large meal times, game times, and hangout times. Beautiful outdoor spaces. The pool was a real hit! Location is so close to Avon Pier for fishing and swimming in the ocean. We found we could play pickleball just down the road in Buxton and enjoyed a couple outings there, as well as visited the Lighthouse. We loved Avon...not too busy, yet provided the needed amenities. Everyone would love to return, felt it was the perfect location for us to "just relax" which is frequently not easy to do. Thanks for sharing your home.

The pictures portray a nice property, then you get there and they do no justice! Place is AMAZING

July14-21, 2018 It was the first time to the Outer Banks and I took my 3 older kids, a friend and his wife, and brother in law and his family. We got to the house early to drop off luggage, and the people from the week before were still there(sick kid). They told me I was going to love this place. Well, they wer'e right. The house is very spacious with plenty of beds. More bathrooms than a high school! Even a shower outside on back deck. Kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals if you stay in to eat. Shopping, food stores, resteraunts all within 5 minutes of Natalies place. Surfs Seafood supplied us with a boil(actually4) that we added lobster tails too. UNBELIEVABLE!! Everyone got their fill. Took the ferry(free) at Hatteras to Ocracoke Island one day. Drive your car right on it. Worth the trip!!!!!!! Beach there is so beautiful. Back to the house, it has an awesome pool with a HUGE deck, very private. Wrap around deck with hot tub in front and the most amazing sunsets you'll ever see, reminded me of Key West. She has bikes to ride, kayaks and paddle boards, ping pong table and one of the best sleeping hammocks East of the Mississippi! Natalie was a superior hostess and is readily available to answer any question. I can't say enough about this vacation property. I know that there are a lot of nice homes in OBX, but this one deserves you to check it out. We had a fantastic week. Everyone said one of our better vacations we have had.

This was my family's first vacation in OBX and we are already planning another next season due to the charm of this rental property. It had everything you could ask for. The house is spacious and inviting. It was very clean and stocked with the necessities. The bedrooms are huge and the beds were very comfy. And last but not least, the WIFI actually works well for those that cannot leave work at home. I enjoy kiteboarding and this house was perfect for launching right from the property, basically the water equivalent of ski in/out. It has a big yard and we were able to rig a few kites at the same time. The location is central relative to the other popular kiting locations in case you need to chase the wind with Real/Waves being to the North, Buxton/Frisco to the South. It's also next door to a marina which made it a breeze to launch the jet ski's we hauled down. We kept them on the water behind the house the whole stay so we were able to jet ski anytime we wanted. We fished right from the backyard and caught plenty of fish including some huge red drum that we enjoyed grilled and in a ceviche. Being on the sound side, we were able to kayak and SUP on the calm water and enjoy the breathtaking sunset. It really does look just like the pictures. There's also a great local seafood store nearby, we bought some grouper and the freshest dry scallops I've ever had. Not to mention the Food Lion nearby, which made it convenient to pick up any necessities you may have forgotten to bring. Not much else to stay, had no complaints and setting things up with Natalie was smooth and painless. Highly recommended, just don't book the dates we plan to book next season.

Perfect getaway

We cannot get enough of this property and Avon. The house is always beautiful and immaculate and the view is beyond words. The house is perfect in our eyes, but the owner keeps finding ways of making the house better and making us want to come more often. The owner, Natalie, is amazing and so friendly. She is easy to communicate with and wants nothing more than people to come and enjoy her home and Avon. There are paddle boards and kayaks at the house so you can spend hours out on the sound just relaxing and enjoying the view around you. There is a hot tub and of course the pool, which is now heated. There are bicycles for you to take relaxing bike rides or to head to the store, etc. The beach side is just a short walk or drive away or you can drive down to the ferry and head over to Ocracoke to spend the day there on the gorgeous beach. If you are looking for a place to come relax and enjoy the peace and serenity of nature, this is the place for you. Avon and this house at McMullen are a spectacular combination. Thank you Natalie for letting us come enjoy your home and Avon!

So peaceful and gorgeous!

This is our second stay at this house on McMullen. The first time we stayed we were overwhelmed by the entire property. The house was huge, beautifully decorated, so clean we didn't have to worry about anything but unpacking, then heading out to the sound or to the private on site pool to relax. So, when we contacted Natalie about staying again, she said she was happy to have us and let us know she had upgraded some things in the house. This surprised me because it was perfect to us! So, on top of all of the perfection that we encountered during the first visit, this time we were treated to smart TVs in every room, 2 new bicycles, a brand new paddle board, 2 hammocks, a new washer and dryer set and there was probably more we missed because we were just too excited to be there. If you are looking for a large property/house to rent for a peaceful stay, you cannot go wrong with this property or this owner. The house is so close to the water that from the deck, you feel as if you are floating right on top of it. The views in the morning and the sunsets are simply breathtaking. You are nestled in a large lot that includes a private pool and a hot tub and it is rather peaceful. There are not a lot of loud noises or distractions, just a peaceful existence. The photos of the house and the property do not do it justice, all of us who went on this second trip to the McMullen house cheered when we saw it in the distance because we could not wait to park our cars and get settled in for our stay. Staying directly on the sound is a really nice option for us as it gave us the opportunity to wade out into the calm waters as well as take the paddle board and the kayak, that is also on site, out for leisurely trips for miles and miles just enjoying the view. The ocean side is just a short walk or drive away and Avon has great public accesses, so we do not miss out on anything staying at McMullen. You are also just a short drive or bike ride to the grocery store, there is Food Lion less than 10 mins away from the house. Lastly, working with the owner, Natalie, is always such a pleasure. She is truly a remarkable person. She is so friendly and kind and extremely easy to get in touch with it you have any questions. I know I cannot stop recommending this house to everyone I know who plans to travel to the coast. So thank you Natalie for always allowing us to have such amazing vacations at your home!
