About this property

Asheville's Family Reunion Spot!

Historic Country Estate in Asheville

The Carolina Jewel is the most unique vacation rental in the Asheville area. The main house has history and character and maintains a casual luxury that other homes cannot duplicate. The two houses sit about 100 yards apart and are joined by a footbridge over the creek with water cascading over the moss covered rocks. The porches, decks, benches, and a firepit all provide the setting for creating precious memories.

The Carolina Jewel has 5 bedrooms in the historic 1845 Victorian Farmhouse and an additional 2 bedrooms in the spacious Creekside Crystal Cottage on the property across the creek underneath a canopy of trees. Each of the suites in the Historic house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has its’ own unique charm. All bedrooms have private baths and fireplaces equipped with gas logs.
The oldest portion of the home, the Great Room that was built in 1845, has rustic rough-hewn logs and its fireplace is made of rocks pulled from the fields outside. Adjacent to the great room is the fully stocked modern kitchen and laundry room for your use. In 1880 an addition, of the Victorian style, was added to the log cabin to accommodate the growing family. A major interior renovation in 1999, added luxury bathrooms without disturbing the charm of the by gone era.
The Carolina Jewel is situated on 4 acres with a stream running through the property, a great firepit, swing, hammocks, decks, porches, and a large level area for the kids to run and play.

The Carolina Jewel locations is ideal with the heart of downtown Asheville only 15 minutes away. Uber and Lyft will pick up and deliver to the Carolina Jewel. The charming town of Weaverville is only 8 miles away and the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance is a mere 5 miles. Many of the top outdoor activities are located within a 20 minute drive; everything from river rafting to zip lines and gem mining! There is even an apple orchard in the neighborhood. You will also find some of the best restaurants as well as some of the best kept secrets that your host will share with you. But, then again, many of our guest book the Carolina Jewel because they want to visit Asheville yet when they arrive and unwind they don’t even want to leave the property!

Guest have access to all parts of both houses.

Michael & Eva like to greet all guest to show the quirks of the old house. We are always available for our guest.

The Carolina Jewel is located at the entrance to the Hawks Landing community which is an upscale community in the valley. It is a good neighborhood for a walk with great neighbors.
Quite time after 10 PM.

Please inquire about pets, we love our fur babies of the canine variety but do limit the number and size of dogs. There is a pet fee of 75 per pet.

A magical wedding weekend
We had the most wonderful time staying at the Carolina Jewel Farmhouse and Creekside Cottage with our friends and family. Each space had all the amenities you could possibly need. Every single one of the bedrooms was large and luxurious (larger than some of the pictures made it seem even which is hardly ever the case!) We got married next to the magical babbling creek and had a reception under a tent with our 50 guests right on the property. Planning even a small wedding is never an easy feat, but Eva was so helpful and easy to work with throughout the whole process. Our guests kept remarking on how cool the farm house is and how the whole property was so well maintained. The Carolina Jewel will be cherished by our family for years to come, we can’t wait to come back and stay for another visit.

Fabulous Family Celebration Weekend
Our family of 14 stayed at the Carolina Jewel and I cannot say enough grerat things about this property! We were in the area to celebrate our son's marriage from the year before and the property exceeded our expectations. Not only was it perfectly charming, especially if you love beautiful old historic properties, but it had so much room that even with our large number we never felt crowded. The bedrooms were spacious and with all of the ammenities right down to the little touches like shampoo/conditioner. And while it is steeped in history, it has also been updated and had all of the modern conveniences you could want like jacuzzi tubs in almost every bathroom and a very well stocked kitchen inlcuding Keurig coffee maker, We loved it so much as a family that we are talking about maybe coming together there in the future. Eva was a fabulous and very reponsive host. She came out to help us get settled and was very quick to answer any question we had. If you want a beautiful location for a large crowd - try the Carolina Jewel - you won't be sorry!!

Wonderful wedding weekend
My nephew was getting married at a nearby venue and my mom wanted all of us(13+) to stay together. I rented the carolina jewel, the cabin and the treehouse and it was perfect. It is always nerve wracking to book a spot for that many people but everyone loved it. My 2 married nephews and their young children stayed in the cabin. The bridge over the creek was a favorite of the 3 yos as was the swing. The firepit was utilized both on thursday night for just the family and Friday night for family and groomsmen. Each bedroom had a cool bathroom attached. My 84 yo mom stayed in the 1 downstairs room with a walkin shower. I liked the fact the tv was only in 1 room so people were more inclined to spend time together. I cannot say enough good thjngs about the carolina jewel. We would definitely stay there again

Family Reunion/Vacation
We absolutely loved the house and the cottage!! We held our family reunion/vacation at the Carolina Gem. There were 16 of us and we ranged in age from 29 to 76. The property was perfect. Very comfortable and clean. Beautiful landscaping. The furnishings. The history of the house. The great room with the log walls. The stream. The porches. The owner was very helpful and friendly. We hope to return again!

Magical gateway to Asheville
Perfect family location with lovely stream on property that kept kids busy for hours! Eva and Michael are the best! Every detail has been thought of, including well stocked kitchens, and a great grocery store is nearby allowing us to eat in and enjoy the fire pit and endless stars! We rented the house and cabin, and everyone enjoyed their own personal bathroom. Gorgeous mountain setting, historic and sparkling clean, you can’t find better anywhere!

Beautiful property
The house and cottage are lovely. Every attention to detail was there, including a welcome basket of s’mores and coffee. Check in was easy. Only downsides are the historical property is next to the highway and you can hear road noise. And when I contacted the owner 3 times to see if we could check out an hour late, I never got a reply. Overall, it was lovely enough we’d stay there again.

The perfect place for our wedding weekend
My husband and I recently spent a beautiful weekend at the Carolina Jewel for our wedding weekend! When choosing a location, it was important to us that we have room for our immediate family to stay with us, outdoor space for the little cousins to run around in, plenty of common areas in the home, and overall a beautiful place for the pictures of our special day that we'll treasure in the years to come. The Carolina Jewel hit every mark and exceeded our expectations. The Carolina Jewel is truly one of a kind. It's a breathtaking property with the sweetest touches in every room. It really felt like a home away from home for us and our family. Eva was also so helpful and responsive, doing everything from meeting with our wedding planner months in advance, to giving us a tour of the property when we arrived, to being totally available during our stay as any questions arose. I can't say enough positive things about the Jewel - we'll definitely be back for anniversaries and family reunions in the years to come!

Beautiful place for a wedding or family gathering
We loved our time at the Carolina Jewel. We held our September wedding on the grounds and it was the perfect place for our gathering. Our wedding ceremony was in the field next to the house along a stream and surrounded by foliage. We really appreciated that we could have everything in one place- the ceremony and the reception. Our out-of-town friends were able to stay at the farmhouse and cottage while we stayed in the Treehouse. Eva and Michael were excellent hosts. Eva answered many questions and helped us plan since we live out of state. They were communicative, friendly and helpful and the homes were very clean and cozy. The Treehouse was an incredible place to stay- so quiet and surrounded by the woods. We hope to return someday!

Not at all what we expected!
We would first like to say that we had a warm welcome from the owners! But, when we pulled up to the front of the house we were disappointed, walking up to the front of the house was a hazardous experience...there were big boulders that were used as steps and then a slate trail that was slippery. We were afraid of falling being we are all in our 70's. All the bathrooms did not have walk-in showers which was also a concern because the bathtubs were difficult to get into. But, the biggest issue we had were the "Stink Bugs" which were in the bedrooms...they were all over even in our suitcases and drawers I had to leave the room and go sleep on the couch downstairs. I believe that older people should be made aware of these issues!

exceeded expectations and reviews
We really enjoyed our stay and everyone raved about the house and the cabin. The kitchen is very well equipped and our many cooks repeatedly remarked about it. We were there for a family reunion, 16 people covering three generations and there were NO complaints. The beds were very comfortable and the sheets and towels are high quality. There are many activities in the area and Eva was very helpful in orienting us to the house and the area. We had plenty of room and the house was very quiet for two of us when all the younger generations were out zip lining etc. For such a nice place for such a large group, it was a bargain.. .

Beautiful property and fantastic hosts
We had a wonderful time with three families with young children. Great outdoor space and plenty of room for eight adults plus kids (we brought our own travel cribs). The house had everything we needed. We made a fire outside in the fire ring and marshmallows, which was fantastic. Two ovens made it easy to make quick breakfasts and dinners. Gas fireplace kept the house cozy.

The Carolina Jewel is simply beautiful.
Our family was there for a cousins reunion. The house and property are nestled in the beautiful North Carolina mountains with gorgeous views from all directions. Each of us had our own room, 5 bedrooms in the main house, each decorated beautifully and equipped with everything you need for an enjoyable stay. Each bedroom has its own full bathroom and a fireplace. So cozy for a romantic getaway or a family gathering. We had a few sports buffs in our crowd so the tv and wifi was a bonus. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances and everything you’ll need to cook meals or bring food in from some of the local restaurants. We did both, cooked in and picked up some Moe’s Original Bar B Que. It was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend staying in either the main house, The Carolina Jewel, or the two bedroom cottage, The Crystal Creekside cottage, or even the treehouse, aka The Tree Castle if you want or need a getaway. You will not be disappointed. Eva and Michael Greene will do everything in their power to make sure you have a memorable experience.

Great place to get married!!!
The house and grounds are absolutely beautiful! We recently were married on a beautiful Fall afternoon while the leaves were starting to change. The grounds easily accommodated 70 guests, a band, and large tent in case of rain. Between the main house and cottage, 20 family and friends slept there over the weekend. Eva and Michael are amazing hosts and went above and beyond to open their home up to us for our special day! I highly recommend this property for weddings or family gatherings.

AWESOME!!!!!!
Well, where do I start?! First, the owners, Eva & Michael, are as Awesome as the property, and that's saying A LOT! They are so friendly & accommodating ... they just want everyone to be happy & comfortable when staying at their Carolina Jewel. We had a family of 14 stay there for 5 nights to celebrate my husband's 70th birthday: 9 adults and 5 children ages 9, 6, 4, 2 & 12 weeks. The property is just beautiful, the house and cottage are so charming, and the layout of both places accommodated everyone beautifully! And, a big plus was the children rarely played with their iPads & we never turned on a tv ... couldn't even get them to have a movie night ... too much to do outside playing in the brook, playing yard games, making smores around the fire pit, just running around the incredible yard. The location of The Carolina Jewel also gives you close access to so much entertainment like zip lining, tubing, etc. Many wonderful memories were made here for our family that will last a lifetime!!!

Above and Beyond!!!!
Our family tries to get together annually, but it has been several years since we have been able to pull it off due to health issues. 2017 was special gathering for us and we wanted a special location. I cannot express how lucky we were to pick the Carolina Jewel Properties and Eva and Michael! The property is the perfect combination of 1800s historical charm and modern convenience. The owners are two of the nicest folks we have met in our many years of renting VRBO properties. My sister commented that it was like staying in a fine hotel - every convenience was available from coffee pods and bath robes, to marshmallows for s'mores. We were able to continue traditions - low country boil, corn hole, Rook tournaments, stories around the campfire, and the young ones thoroughly enjoyed the Navitat Zip Lines and tubing on the river. The property itself is amazingly restored with beautiful surprises around every corner. We especially enjoyed the many porches for coffee, conversation, and quiet relaxation. The bedrooms are huge and comfortable. We utilized both houses but gathered at the "big house" for group meals and evening entertainment. As great as the properties are , the genuine southern hospitality of the owners was unsurpassed in our experience. They were there early to greet our oldest son who came in on a red eye flight from Spokane,WA. They allowed him early access so that he could sleep before we arrived. They also accommodated a delayed departure. It is obvious that the happiness of their guests brings them joy! Timing was such that our group received a private tour of their new addition, a magnificent tree house on the hillside above the Carolina Jewel. Michael and Eva partnered with the "Treehouse Guys" to build this masterpiece, and the craftsmanship and creativity on display is truly amazing. Please check it out if you have a smaller group staying there. It would be a once in a lifetime opportunity. In closing, we thank you, Eva and Michael, for your hospitality and for the love and care you have given this beautiful piece of historical property. We certainly hope to enjoy it again. Warm regards!!! The Combs Family

About the host

Hosted by Eva Greene

Host profile image
Michael & Eva Greene, Asheville natives who have had the luck to be able to live in Asheville all their lives (well it’s not over yet, but who’s counting!) Michael comes from a long line of jewelers and is passionate about gemstones, thus the inspiration for naming the suites in the Carolina Jewel. Eva spent 25 years in the travel business and then joined Michael in the family business. Together they have traveled much of the world and consider themselves blessed to live in Western North Carolina. Today they are transiting the business to the next generation which gives them the freedom to interact with and be concierge to guest coming to visit.

Why they chose this property

It is unusual to find such a historic property that has been so well restored and maintained. The history and beauty of Buncombe County makes it a great place to visit or a great place to call home. We often tell visitors that we live in Asheville due to an accident of birth. We were both born here and are fortunate that we are able to claim the title of Natives.

The location of The Carolina Jewel is perfect. Only 5 miles to the Blue Ridge Parkway. About 15 minutes from all the amazing restaurants, art galleries and nightlife of Asheville. Only a few miles from the charming small town of Weaverville which is growing with its own expanding collections of food and art.

Outdoor activist will love the proximity of the river with its canoeing, rafting and tubing as well as fishing. Motorcycles and bicycles co-exist peacefully in Asheville.

And if you tire of eating out in all the fine eating establishments there are plenty of tail gate markets, farmers markets, and food trucks for carry out or engage the services of our recommended private chef who will cook and clean up while you relax around the fire.

What makes this property unique

The unique benefit of choosing the Carolina Jewel is the experience of stepping into a home that is 170 years old and thriving! The furnishing are period pieces combined with family pieces that have been lovingly restored and put back into use.

Another of the benefits are the beds and the linens. Luxury memory foam mattresses and pillow top mattresses will assure you of a great nights sleep!

The kitchens are fully equipped with Williams-Sonoma stainless steel cookware and quality knives for the most discriminating chef. A variety of spices, olive oil, vinegar, coffee and creamers are supplied.
