About this property

Looking across the Bay and Lake Superior!

1880s house one lot from the water with great views. We do not advertise on FB or CL, and we do not bill through PayPal or money orders/wire. Summers 2024: weekly booking schedule is a Saturday to Saturday only between last week of June to end of first week in September. At all other times it is a 2 night minimum. Located in Grand Marais, Michigan.

Anchor House is a 4 bedroom (including a loft bedroom), 1 bath, house with a wood stove fireplace and a deck with a fantastic view of West Bay and Lake Superior. It is located downtown along the bay, with an easy walk to all the restaurants and bars.

Anchor House, built in the 1880s, has been kept in traditional style so you can have that feeling of stepping back into the past. It has a wood parlor stove and soft bed linen for warmth and comfort Some modern amenities have been added to Anchor House for your comfort including a 42" LED flat screen TV, cable TV, and a stainless steel range. It also has a large yard for relaxing or playing.

Anchor House is one lot from the water with nothing but a couple of trees, grass and some sand between it and the water. (As a courtesy an owner of the lot situated directly behind and on West Bay and behind Anchor House currently allows renters of Anchor House recreational use of the lot and beach and to access the water. Just take the steps down the back of Anchor House, cross the foot bridge, and follow the path.*)

Anchor House's living room has a 3 seat sofa, a swivel armchair, flat screen TV, cable, a DVD player, and a small collection of movies for when you are stuck indoors. Next to the living room is a sitting/parlor room, with two reading chairs, side table and the wood parlor stove - a perfect spot for reading in front of a fire. North of the sitting room is an eat-in kitchen with an extendable dining table, stainless electric range, full size refrigerator, coffee maker, pots, pans, crockery, glassware and utensils.

On the first floor of Anchor House are three of the four bedrooms. The master bedroom has a queen size bed, while the second bedroom has a water view and a full size bed. The remaining first floor bedroom has twin bunk beds. On the second floor is the loft bedroom which has two twin beds and access is by way of loft stairs. All the beds are well appointed with soft bed linen and the queen and full bed have white comforters.

The standard, seasonal and event accommodation rates include 6 people and use of the 3 bedrooms on the 1st floor (1xqueen, 1xfull, and one set of bunk beds). The loft bedroom is secured from entry unless prior arranged at an additional cost of $10 per night. Each additional person, above 6 people, attracts an additional nightly rate of $5 per person (this includes the use of the loft) to a maximum occupation of 9 people. The 9th person would be accommodated on a fold out small twin bed or the sofa bed.

The Anchor House bathroom is bright and fresh and contains a shower, toilet, sink and vanity cabinet. Your bathroom linen is all there waiting for you to use it.

Outside, on two sides of Anchor House, is an undercover porch with some comfortable seating including an old school pew. At the back of the House is a deck with a patio table and seating for dining.

The Anchor House also has a park charcoal grill for your family BBQ. There is also a small firepit in front of the deck so you can look at the fire and the view from the deck.

Please come and enjoy a relaxing stay at Anchor House in traditional style!

* The courtesy recreational land use access over the vacant waterfront lot is not a renter's right or condition of your rental and it is subject to change at any time. You do not pay for this recreational use access and it is not part of any rental of renting Anchor House. If you decide to take advantage of this currently allowed recreational land use while staying at Anchor House just take the steps down the back, across the suspended walkway over the pond, and follow the trail to the beach, and please kindly respect the land and keep it clean so future renters of Anchor House receive the same courtesy recreational use access.

Some things to do around Grand Marais:

2. Swim at East Bay or West Bay beaches.
3. Walk Agate Beach from the lighthouse to Sable Falls. Or walk along the road to Sable Falls west along Carlson Street and H-58, then down the side of the falls, and back to the Lake Street in town.
4. Walk the trails both east and west of Grand Marais.
5. Visit the Agate Museum and other antique and gift shops in town.
6. Friday night is farmers' market in the town park - locals sell their homegrown and homemade goods in the open space near the pergola - there are some excellent cooks living in Grand Marais.
7. See Kim at the Grand Marais Outfitters to organize or rent a kayak. Richard at Grand Marais Powersports rents four wheelers. Rainbow Charters for a charter boat tour/fishing expedition.
8. Visit the log slide lookout about 13 miles west of Grand Marais off H-58. A little further along that road is the 6 mile trail to Au Sable Lighthouse.
9. Visit Pictured Rocks that is about 40 minutes west of Grand Marais off H-58.
10. Use the grill on the grass area, cook your steaks, sit on your deck and enjoy your steak with a cocktail or soda while looking out at the lighthouse and water and beautiful sunsets.
- There is a black folder in the living room with additional info on the surrounding area and Grand Marais.

We had such a lovely stay at Anchor House. We loved the character of the place, and had everything we needed to have a comfortable stay. The house was in a great location , within walking distance to town and the beach. We so enjoyed dinner on the deck and our time by the lake. We would definitely stay again!

Girls getaway
My childhood BFF and our daughters (same age) stayed here to visit the big lake. Anchor House was adorable, clean, comfortable, well appointed with a full kitchen and all the things you might actually have at home (not the typical 1 dull knife and a few random utensils). The house provided us with just enough room to hang out together comfortably yet still have our own quiet spaces. The hosts were super helpful with a few questions we had at arrival. The beds were comfy, the location was convenient. Just a really darling home with history and character. We're already talking about doing this again.

Cottage was perfect. Location lovely.
Only suggestion is to replace the cafe rod holding the shower curtain up with heavier shower rod. It was a comedy act every night with the rod falling down.

Fall get away
The anchor house was great very comfortable had every thing we needed and within Walking distance of town. The access to the beach was not the best the boardwalk was falling apart and dangerous part of fhe path was very wet and muddy. Not worth going down to the beach. The view from the side of the property was great no need to use the path down to the each

Great Family House - Fun Beach - Convenient
First time visit to Grand Marais and I hope it won''t be our last! We loved the Anchor House, 4 people in our family and the house had everything we needed except a carrot peeler (or at least I couldn't find it :-)). Short 2 min walk to the beach which we played on everyday. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. You can walk for a mile! Playground on the beach in town, perfect for younger kids. We walked into town several times, sometimes via the beach. Visited many of the shops and museums. Easy drive into Munising to do different activities.

Anchor House
Great location and accepting pets was a bonus. While the place is old it met our needs quite nicely. The only reason 5 stars was not given is because the yard needs some trimming done. The water is barely visible as the bushes in back are all overgrown and look nothing like the listing picture. The path to the water needs a major trim job before someone trips down the path they cannot see. We mostly used the side door to enter into the home via the kitchen and the tree limb is low enough to hit your head as I did multiple times. All in all the location and price made the overgrown vegetation a minor inconvenience.

Absolutely Charming Home
We were thrilled with every aspect of this lovely home. The bed in the main bedroom was comfortable, and the kitchen and bathroom were extremely well-stocked. The house is charming -- we loved using the pot-bellied stove and the abundance of candles. Everything we could want or need was thought of -- including a tea kettle for my morning tea! The house is very convenient to town, and the restaurants. If it hadn't been so cold, we could have easily walked there. Access to the beach is wonderful. We couldn't have been happier with our choice to stay here, and we will definitely be back. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Get away from Chicagoland with family
Love at first sight. Quaint and comfortable with nice location for quiet getaway. Potbelly stove was pleasant and easily used. If the owners wished to make one impactful change all they would need to do is purchase comfortable beds. The only negative we had was two nights of poor sleep. It is one thing to advertise restful location then you should be able to sleep through the night without skewers and lumps.
