Absolutely wonderful
We enjoy the property. It was in a nice, secluded location. The house had everything that we need it. It was a short walk down the hill. If you wanted to go to the beach or any of the local restaurants, it was great.

An overall enjoyable stay
We enjoyed our stay despite a few issues at the property. We had a failure of an AC unit and a toilet as well as some leaking when we were struck with a thunder storm. Gillian responded in a timely fashion to the AC and Toilet issues and these were rectified in the time frame as promised by Gillian. The leaking issue resolved itself once the thunder storm had passed. Despite these issues our stay was thoroughly enjoyable and we would choose this property again.

Stay at Curates house barbados
This house is lovely the views, the pool the ambiance, its rustic look makes it feel like home. It's just outside of speightown shopping area and the beach but I suggest you drive as the house is set away from others. I stayed with my hubby and our children and we had a great time. Thank to Gillian and Guy who were great host responded to us in quick time when we had a query. We'll be back soon.

Perfect haven for our stay in Barbados
First of all, you have to appreciate that this property is c. 200 years old and what it lacks in today's 'mod cons', it certainly makes up for in pure history, character and presence. That's not to say that it didn't provide everything we needed either, with four beautiful bedrooms, all air conditioned, one en-suite and two further bathrooms, we had exactly what we needed. The lounge and kitchen areas were fantastic and the pool and outdoor area overlooking the sea was stunning - complimented by not two, but three monkey performances!

Good location, large rooms and great outside area
When we first arrived at dusk we though it was a bit in the sticks, but upon waking up the views were great and realised that it was only a short 10 minute walk into town.

Family Holiday
We was very impressed with the size of the property, it was hidden away in the hill above Speightstown with a fantastic view of the Caribbean sea where there was a fantastic covered place to eat dinner and watch the sunset. This clearly has been a loved home for a family with great suggestions on places to see and eat with a full bookcase and sun hat too. The only negative comment would be that one of the AC broke in the bedrooms and it took a few days to get this fixed but apart from that one issue this house met all of our expectations and we had a wonderful holiday.

Lovely outdoor area. In need of some work doing to it
This is a property with SO much potential. It’s so big and spacious, yet it lacks simple things that surely would be a must. Only the bedrooms have AC which is bizarre. The living room and kitchen/dining area gets uncomfortably hot and is impossible to cool down. The kitchen is a bit dirty and the dishwasher hardly works. The bedrooms are comfortable although have nets open to outside and so is incredibly loud at night and can get very hot if you don’t keep the fan or AC on. Our favourite part of the property was outside. It was beautiful and the pool was great. The property really needs some investment to get it where it should be. The owner was brilliant and helpful. It has a lot of potential. I would definitely recommend getting a car.

a wonderful time
We had the privilege of spending 3 weeks here. We were joined by 8 others at various times but there was room for all in this gorgeous house. Gillian was an excellent host who sent us detailed e-mails of everything we needed to know. She clearly wants her guests to enjoy their experience and have fun. There are very few "rules". It is as if it is understood that one would automatically treat the grand old lady that is Curates House with the gentle respect that she deserves while delighting in the all the hospitality she has to offer. We did have trouble with AC and a loose door handle. Two days after an e-mail was sent a brand new AC unit and handle were installed. Follow up e-mail confirmed that we were happy. It is only responsible and fair to notify the owner of any concerns so that they can be addressed. There is a casual elegance to Curates House that photos do not quite capture. It is well laid out, nicely furnished and has plenty of storage, hangers and closets. It is spacious, luxurious and comfortable; steeped in history but with every modern convenience. The outdoors are private and where we very contentedly spent hours every day. We would be beckoned out by blue, sunny skies, an ocean view and a lovely breeze. The pool was warm and sized for a swim. The areas for lounging, chatting and dining were perfectly furnished and accessorized. The pool was cleaned and the area swept every Tuesday and Friday. Grace arrived weekly to make up the beds in crisp, fresh linen and left the floors and baths sparkling. Speightstown is not a resort town. It is a Barbadian town where we found typical Bajan grocery stores, a fish market (go early for best selection), pharmacies, vegetable stands, shops and restaurants that serve both locals and visitors. Holetown, 20 minutes away offers the resort experience with upscale shopping, gourmet and wine outlets and Massey's grocery store. It was a great place to visit but I was glad we were not living there. I wanted a more authentic taste of the Barbados and that is just what we got at Curates House. Thank you, Gillian for sharing this treasure with us.

The property was absolutely fabulous and exactly as described
The property was spacious and tastefully decorated. The outside area and the pool were delightful. I would certainly recommend this property to other guests. The property was well equipment with every thing you could want. Directions and recommendation to all amentites was excellent. The people of Barbados are very friendly and make you feel totally at home and we never felt uneasy at any time. The yellow buses which you catch at the end of the road (8 minute walk) is 2 Barbados dollars and takes you to Bridgetown, Oistins and all the local beaches. Dick and jeans on the corner (real local bar) made us feel really welcome as did the Fisherman's pub, both had wonderful food. Can't wait to return

Beautiful Villa - Ideal for large families
We stayed here for my wife's 60th Birthday. What a lovely place, the outside space is brilliant for BBQ's and chilling out round the pool. The house is well equipped with all you need to enjoy your time there. The bedrooms all have comfy beds and are all air conditioned which made sleeping a pleasure. Speightstown is just a short walk down the hill and we enjoyed some nice meals out in the town, there is a supermarket in the town which we found to be the best value one its called Jordans. Gillian the house owner was really helpful and ensured our stay went without a hitch. All in all we would all recommend the house to anyone, but especial families or groups.

Amazing Location!
We were a family of 6 adults and 1 child that spent our summer holiday in Barbados in August. Whilst we would agree somewhat with an earlier review that said the house could do with some upkeep and a deep clean, the overall opinions were that it was a perfect spot for a relaxing holiday! The views were amazing, especially at sunset time and most of us were up at the crack of dawn due to jet lag so got to witness the daily monkey show which was really special, it's not every day you get to see wild monkeys in their natural environment, a real privilege! The house was really spacious, ideal for 3 couples - each had our own bathroom and the hot water was plentiful! Although the housekeeper was no longer on site, we were able to get in touch with Gillian the owner fairly quickly and she always responded promptly to any queries or issues that arose. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Curates House, great value for money in an otherwise super expensive part of the island!

Wonderful spot!
We stayed here at Easter, 4 Adults and 4 Children. The house is lovely and huge! Plenty of room for us all to spread out, the pool and terrace area are also very large with beautiful views over the west coast. Gillian the owner was on hand to answer any questions and emailed when we arrived to make sure we had settled in Ok. The property sits about a 10 minute walk from Speightstown centre, we would walk down the hill every day with the children and go to the beach or get on the bus to one of the other beaches along the west coast. At the bottom of the hill is the bus stop, I don't think we ever waited more than a couple of minutes for a bus, and they are a must!! buses from here go all the way down to Bridgetown and Oistins for 2 dollars! Alleynes bay and Mullins beach are a must! Just tell the driver where you want to get off and they'll stop for you. Back to the house, it is fully equipped with everything you need for a home from home, even has Netflix which the kids were happy about! Very beautiful old property, beautiful views, we tried to book again for next year but it had already been booked! I'm not surprised as it's a great property and we'll definitely be back.

Perfect base for Barbados holiday.
Curates House provided the perfect base for a great holiday for our 2 families of 4. Gillian was great to deal with and her recommendations were top notched. We love sitting outside on the oversized dining table every morning for breakfast and discussing what adventure we were embarking that day. We look forward to returning soon.

A fabulous, spacious property in a great location, but sadly in need of some serious updating.
Enjoyed our stay in this property, lovely terrace, however, requires a serious amount of cash injection to raise the standard one would expect for the rental fee. Poolside area, including soft furnishings, (most cushions need replacing), needs most attention, also a coat of paint around the pool. Although the general standard of cleanliness in the property was acceptable, and the kitchen is certainly well equipped, a good ‘spring clean’ is required, in particular all the kitchen cupboards. These cupboards and drawers, are full of junk, which needs clearing out. Some of the bed linen, although well laundered, is marked, and needs replacing. The shower heads in the two downstairs bathrooms are extremely ‘scaled up’ and really should be replaced. We were made aware that the property is on the market, as we were subjected to a ‘viewing’ on the day we were leaving! In short, we would respectfully suggest that the owners take a serious look at re-investing some of the rental income in upgrading what is basically a beautiful property.

A beguiling house in a stunning location.
This is a substantial historic house located on a ridge overlooking Speightstown and the Caribbean sea. It would be hard to imagine a more idyllic location - peaceful, nestled in the tree canopy, with stunning views. The house has real character, with late colonial influences including beautiful dark hardwood floors and window shutters. The interior fittings and furniture also reflect the period of the property and are stylish, attractive and comfortable. The kitchen is very well equipped and is light and spacious with a large dining table and a raised breakfast bar. The ground-floor master bedroom, with its excellent en suite, maintains the high quality of the rest of the interior, with the exotic addition of a morning wake-up call as monkeys play on the roof of the building just after dawn. The outside spaces are of the same high quality. We divided our time between the excellent pool which enjoys direct sun for most of the day and is long enough for a serious swim; the patio which, again, is spacious and sunny; and the seating and dining gazebos which provide welcome relief from the fierce sun while enjoying a clear view of Speightstown and the Caribbean sea. In fact, much as we enjoyed the interior of the house, we spent most of our waking hours in the outdoor spaces, preparing meals on the large gas bar b q, feeding the birds, watching the dancing dragonflies, and listening to the howls of the monkeys. This really is a slice of paradise. If you feel the need to leave this property, you can walk down the hill to the beach bars and restaurants in just 15 minutes. This is a fabulous property which we can highly recommend.

Perfect secluded hideaway, surrounded by stunning nature!
We are a family of four and stayed for two weeks- the second week joined also by a family friend. The property was more than amply sized for the 3 adults and 2 (very active) children, and amazingly stocked with all we needed, and much more (we used the great BBQ most evenings). The views were stunning, and the sunsets from the decking were absolutely amazing each evening. We loved the bats each evening as they came out; they flew so close if you stood in the right place, that you could hear and feel their wing beats! My daughter was amazed! Monkeys played within sight and cane toads frequently crossed the patio area once the sun went down. House geckos and lizards were by the dozen, and we even had a few barbados leaf toed - thought to be extinct there until 3 years ago! You feel like you have escaped to your own private tree house, indeed many of our friends born and raised on the island were oblivious to the existence of the property. This is something of a rarity on an island so small and well traversed. Gillian, the owner, is lovely and completely accessible for any query- I am no good with technology and could not work Netflix- all resolved within a couple of hours. Unfortunately one of the air con units was on the blink and stopped the day after we arrived, we expected an uncomfortable night, but that afternoon it was serviced and repaired with a new circuit board, all with minimal fuss and intrusion to the holiday- an absolutely top class response and better than many previously from other rentals. Cannot fault any response from Gillian over the course of the holiday, or the property itself, it's a great place to go, already planning the return!

Great Value - Beautiful location
Our group of eight loved the house and it is as beautiful as the pictures close to fantastic beaches but still private with no other spots close by. We would highly recommend it

We first visited Barbados for a month in 2005 - it was "love at first sight " and we cancelled our return tickets , bought a house and stayed . Sounds impulsive - it was ! We have spent 11 fabulous years here - best place to raise a young family .

Why they chose this property

We decided that we wanted a proper Barbados experience - a house with history rather than a more touristy gated development .
We chose the Curates House because of its views , proximity to the ocean and our love of the former capital , Speightstown . Theres also a very friendly cricket club next door .
We have 3 fantastic beaches 3 mins drive from our house and i have swum their pretty much every day for 11 years - no better start to the day .
Visitors are very complimentary about the house which has a friendly ,happy feel .
