About this property

Charming four double-bedroom stone-built cottage in beautiful Vale of Glamorgan

A traditional oak-beamed cottage, in parts dating back over 300 years, in a rural village setting, sleeping up to eight people in four bedrooms. The accommodation also comprises two bathrooms, two reception rooms (including one with an open fire), a kitchen with large dining area, a downstairs cloakroom/utility room and two charming courtyard gardens, including one with BBQ.

Set in the unspoiled and historic Vale of Glamorgan, Ty Gwyn is in the heart of the village of Wick, with its medieval church, village shop, post office, village green and its two traditional country public houses.

The cottage is close to the Glamorgan Heritage Coastline (a stunning section of the Welsh Coast Path), beaches and other activities. Cowbridge, an attractive market town, is a 15-minute drive away, with the historic town of Llantwit Major being only a 10-minute drive. The house is within walking distance of the coastal path and is in a great location to participate in a range of activities, including horse riding, mountain biking, walking, cycling and surfing, with the sandy beaches at Southerndown, Llantwit Major and Ogmore only a short drive away; there are four golf courses within a 15-minute drive. Further afield, there are easy routes to Swansea and the Gower Peninsular, Cardiff and the south Wales valleys. The house is fully equipped to modern standards and is ideal for families wanting either a quite break or an activity-based holiday.

Only 20 minutes from the M4 and easy access via the main rail line into south Wales; Wick is also served by regular buses which run via the coastal villages to Bridgend, Barry and Cardiff.

Please be aware that the ground and first floor are not all on one level, and escape from the first floor in the case of kitchen fire is via the bedroom windows; please enquire from the owner for further details.

Reluctantly, we have had to increase our prices for 2024 and beyond owing to the new Fire-Safety Regulations, effective 1 October 2023. Various amendments to the property are scheduled for Autumn 2023 to ensure that we comply.

Cozy cottage
We found the cottage very cozy but had plenty of room for two couples. The area is quiet and the people we met were very friendly snd helpful. It worked well as a home base for us as we did a day trip each day.

Beautiful house in a great location
We had a great 3 days in Wick, walking the coast trail and exploring nearby towns. Our best meal by far was at the Farmers Arms in St Brides Major. Great Turkish food! The house was perfect and the outdoor table much appreciated.

Lovely home from home
The house was as good as the written description and better than the photos. Plenty of space - two lounges, big kitchen diner, more than decent bedrooms. Had all that we needed as a base. Thanks very much!

Wonderful stay in a charming town
My family had a wonderful time here. Plenty of room for us to spread out…and after a nine hour plane trip, we definitely needed it. Nestled in a quiet neighborhood but close to larger cities and beautiful beaches, this was a great jumping off point for our adventures. Huw also thoughtfully gave us directions to beautiful walks and a spectacular walled garden…local gems that can’t be found in any guide books. I highly recommend this property for your next adventure in South Wales.

Great location and a good sized house
Overall it's great. There are a few tired bits of decor that detract a bit from the appearance and the cleaning before we arrived could have been a little better, but it's a great house for a group, with comfortable beds, a good-sized lounge and a nice outdoor area for sitting around when it's warm.

Quaint house
This house is cute and cozy. Lots of room for my family of 8. Best part was the washer and dryer. The other nice aspect was the patio parking space was large enough for our van. Definitely recommend!

Lovely, quaint house in a beautiful area.
We loved this house with its nooks and crannies and its excellent accommodation. Seven of us from three generations fitted in wonderfully. The house is really well equipped with modern appliances and everything we needed for a perfect stay. The village is wonderful - grandkids enjoyed the park, the village shop was great and our meal at the Lamb and Flag was stellar (catered for vegans and gluten intolerant diets). Huw communicated brilliantly and is an excellent host. First class

Escape to the country
What a wonderfull cottage and surrounding. Peaceful and quite. A good base to see lots of places in south Wales, two good pubs with amazing food and on the road to Bridgend an amazing Turkish restaurant with a host who knows hospitality with not only a capital H, but written in only Capitals. Huw is a easy going and easy to reach with any questions and he answers them on a short notice. The church next door breath history so as some of the headstones on the graves next to it. The cottage has everything you need and you will feel at home from home. We will definitely book it again.

Beautiful cottage near the coast
We thoroughly enjoyed the cottage, which had everything you could possibly need in some cupboard and was very homely. The path to the nearest beach was very nice, through fields and hedgerows and down a ladder at the end. This was the most interesting rocky coast you could wish for, especially if you are either a painter or a geologist. It takes about 40 minutes to get there. There were so many other exciting things to do in the area that unfortunately we ran out of time and will have to come back another year! We did get our boat on the river at Ogmore Castle, enjoyed the stepping stones, walked through the sand dunes, tried the toboggan, which was fun (and hard work getting it up steep sand), found fossils and crabs and visited the beautiful Dyffryn Gardens.

Quirky stone cottage
Roomy stone cottage with awkward front door ( it wouldn't lock properly on the yale lock- reported to owner) Different levels with really thick stone walls. Kitchen reasonably well equipped. We had problems with the oven smoking and erratic temperature control (reported). Big dining area next to Kitchen. Lounge comfortable with TV which although comes on advertising as a Smart TV, it needs an adapter to link to WiFi. Good WiFi in lounge and kitchen/dining room. Less so In upper storey. No dvd player. External doors all a bit wonky when closing ( owner issues advice to close them). Utility room a big let-down compared to the rest of the property. Very unsightly but convenient as has downstairs toilet. Stairs alongside original stone wall; watch your fingers when descending holding on to handrail. Large bedroom to front of cottage with wooden floors in all bedrooms. Smart TV in main bedroom! Beds comfortable. Ensuite toilet/shower a bit cramped. Other bedrooms a good size (3 doubles 2 single beds). Back bedrooms a bit chilly. School is directly opposite so term-time stays could be awkward. I used the school layby to park as it was half-term week. Parking outside house is ok but you have to park close to wall. NB Road is on bus route.

Another wonderful stay in Wick
The house is wonderful with all the facilities needed for a nice coastal break. Guests often leave some useful and non-perishables so it's worth checking what is in the house before stocking up. Great communications with the owner, fab house and a great location for exploring all the beaches from Barry to Porthcawl

About the host

Hosted by Mr Huw Daniel

Host profile image
Huw grew up in a coal-mining valley north of Port Talbot but knew the Vale area well. So when the opportunity came to purchase a second home in the area, we jumped at the chance to spend more time in such a beautiful and unspoilt area of South Wales. We have three children and live and work in Greater London but going to Ty Gwyn as often as we can.

Why they chose this property

"Modern but with character, spacious, comfortable, lots of 'extras', prompt and helpful communication with caring owner" are some of the comments made recently by guests who have stayed at Ty Gwyn.

What makes this property unique

We are now able to welcome guests to the Vale again. Please rest assured that we will take every effort to make your stay safe, comfortable and relaxed. For your peace of mind, we are following the latest advice from HomeAway:
1. Bed linen and towels will be washed at 60 C instead of the usual 40 C.
2. Kitchen and bathrooms and all frequent-contact surfaces will be thoroughly cleaned with the recommended disinfectant.
3. We will ensure non-contact checking in and out of the cottage.
4. Guests will be permitted to use the washing machine and dryer to wash items mid stay, if desired, and washing detergent will be provided.
5. We will supply generous amounts of hand wash, kitchen and bathroom cleaning materials, anti-bacterial wipes and hand-sanitising gel.
6. Guests will be requested to remove and store foot ware in the entrance lobby.
7. Unfortunately, we will have to cease our practice of leaving tea, coffee and kitchen basics such as condiments for our guests.

As you will appreciate, we have had to add a modest surcharge, temporarily, to cover the cost of the additional procedures listed above.
