It is possible to visit the small towns of Marzamemi and Portopalo di Capo Passero means reaching the extreme south of Sicily, of Italy, of Europe. As you move away from Syracuse, going first the state road 115 and then the provincial road to Marzamemi, the landscape changes, becomes more arid, in some parts almost African. We realize that we are traveling along a borderland. Marzamemi is a small village, a fraction of the village of Pachino, inhabited in winter by a few thousand people who become more than double in the summer. Despite this, with its marina, still retains that air from a small fishing village of yesteryear. Marzamemi developed essentially thanks to the construction of a "tonnara", one of the largest in Sicily that until the twentieth century was the main economic source of the country. Today the tonnara is no longer in use but you can walk it through the village center. The attached church is still standing and part of the lodgings of the tuna fishermen are now transformed into summer houses that can be rented. The sea is beautiful and diving enthusiasts will surely find many opportunities as there are still several wrecks on the seabed. Leaving Marzamemi and heading south, take the scenic coastal road. Along this road are the caves of Calafarina and Corruggi, ancient prehistoric settlements. Continuing along the coast rises up again revealing the beautiful sea.
