About this property

Historic Sausalito "Mermaid House" With Breathtaking Water Views

This historic turn of the century home is in the sunny "banana belt" of Sausalito. There are full waterfront views from almost every room. The location is a short walk to numerous excellent restaurants and nightlife. This Sausalito two bedroom, one bath home has beautiful furnishings with mermaid fountain and sconces and it boasts of charming character. Enjoy the sunrise and sunset on the deck overlooking hundreds of sailboats. Prepare meals in the large kitchen with a view and dine in a formal parlor room. Relax reading a book in a special nook overlooking Sausalito. End your day sleeping in large master bedroom looking at the city lights and the changing colors of the bay. Views like this require some exercise as there are steps up to the home. Master bedroom includes a Cal King bed and the second bedroom has a full size bed. The reading nook has a full bed too. This home sleeps 4 to 5 guests. It is simply magical. Please call the owner to discuss your stay. We are more than happy to assist with any questions you may have. my Cell # 415-259-8612. Due to local laws, there is a 30 day minimum. For that reason I try to work my calendar so I don"t have gaps I am not allowed to rent. I frequently have guests staying as long as 3 or 4 months. That is already reflecting in the pricing since there is not a concept of daily rates in Sausalito.

Wonderful Sausalito stay
We had a wonderful extended stay at the beautiful Mermaid House is Sausalito. Our hosts Elaine and Kim were great and very helpful in giving us both information about the house and tips for enjoying the beautiful town and the surrounding area. We found the house and the views exceeded our expectations. The deck was perfect for coffee in the morning and cocktails in the evening. We had visits from our adult children and we were able to accommodate 5 adults easily. We entertained friends with cookouts on the back patio and enjoyed preparing meals in the beautiful kitchen. The shops and restaurants of Sausalito were an easy walk, although admittedly easier going downhill into town than back uphill. It is an easy walk to the ferry for the scenic ride into San Francisco and an easy drive to the wonders of Marin County and the wine country just beyond. This was our first experience with VRBO and our stay at the Mermaid House has definitely set a very high standard.

The best way to stay at the bay.
The Mermaid House is great! Even better than the photos. I was attending a conference in San Francisco with my family, and wanted to be out of the hassle of the city. We stayed at Mermaid House and I took the ferry to my meetings in the city every morning. The extra time was spent having my coffee and reading the paper, a pleasant way to start the day. Meanwhile my wife and son had a short trip to Muir Woods and wine country while I was busy. We used the great kitchen to make dinner, and ate on the spectacular deck. There are great supplies from Drivers Grocery, which was a short, but very steep, walk. The stairs are the only drawback in this lovely place, but it is worth the climb. We would definitely stay again.

Very Sausalito. Fabulous views of the bay. Within walking distance to DT Sausalito and the ferry.
It worked perfectly for preparing a Thanksgiving dinner-large kitchen and formal dining room. Everyone loved the reading/napping nook with a day bed and fabulous bay views.

perfect location
The location and home were perfect for us. The views exceeded your descriptions. The house was nicely furnished and gave a really good first impression. We arrived at 11.30pm from Texas. I was disappointed to find the third "nook" bed unmade, with no linens left out. While searching for same we discovered most of the drawers stuffed with clothing in the bedrooms. Also no minimum starter pack, coffee creamer etc, left for us. This was when we found the pantry cupboard crammed with part used out of date foods. I had spoken to Elaine, the owner just prior to our trip and told her my sister and sister-in-law were joining me from Ireland. I did tell her we would not be arriving until late on our arrival date, that my son would be meeting us from the airport and dropping us off at the house after a stop for dinner. I also mentioned that we ladies are all in our seventies and would not be driving ourselves while there. After this disappointing start we managed to have a wonderful time in beautiful Sausalito. I do, however, feel the standard of the preparation for well paying guests could be improved significantly. I would also appreciate the return of my security deposit.

The mermaid house in Sausalito is indeed gorgeous. The view from the front deck is brathtaking.
I highly recommend this house for a couple, small family, or friends visiting Sausalito or the Bay area. The property is well-maintained with a beautiful garden and outdoor eating area beside the kitchen (with a grill) and a front deck with a large table that can accommodate 8. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen and bathroom are large and spacious, and the quality of the sunlight gives this house a special charm. The house is perched on top of a steep hill and I said to myself more than once, "This feels like Italy." The view of the bay and the mountains behind are inspiring. I will return if I have the chance.

Incredible Views!
We came to Sausalito from the East Coast for a wedding and decided to stay for a week. Coming from a relatively flat state that doesn't offer a lot in the way of scenic vistas, we were all blown away by the views as soon as we walked in. From there it only got better! Watching the sun come up over the water every morning from the master bedroom was spectacular. Having our morning coffee and breakfast on the deck overlooking the bay was equally spectacular. Because we were hanging out with a lot of family for the week there weren't any evening meals prepared but the kitchen is roomy and there is a gas grill off the kitchen in the courtyard. There's a very cool little nook right off the deck equipped with a mattress that can serve as a place to sit and enjoy the view on those colder mornings, but can also serve as an extra sleeping space. One member of our party slept there very comfortably. The upstairs bedrooms are spacious and very comfortable. Both offer privacy but also accessibility for families with younger children, and as I stated earlier, the views in the master bedroom are spectacular since the house was constructed on a hillside. There is also ample parking in front of the garage for two cars and alternate parking is always available on the street. Elaine was great to deal with. Very warm and friendly. We can't wait to return.

A Magical Stay!
We came in from Hawaii to get together with my mom, our son and his wife. We had lived in Sausalito a few years back and thought it would be a great stay. It was! The house was great, lots of room, the sun deck has incredible views of the bay, and even has a heat lamp for the chilly nights. We had planned on going out every night for dinner, but the grill was right there, with all of the kitchen stuff you need to produce our own gourmet meals every night! We ate on the deck. Better than any 5 star restaurant! Elaine was incredibly nice and greeted us the day we got there. There are quite a few stairs, but if you are eating well, they are perfect for burning off the calories! Certainly not enough to keep us away! The bedrooms were huge, the bathroom large as well. We had a great time at the Sausalito Art Festival on Saturday. All in all, fantastic. Elaine, we will be back!

Beautiful Getaway!
Quaint, eclectic, romantic home. Fantastic views from most rooms, with a lovely deck for outdoor relaxing. Well appointed and the master bed is pure luxurious comfort! Great for a romantic getaway. I have been traveling to the area for years and with the Mermaid House, we have now found the perfect place to stay (usually stay at Hotel Sausalito). This wonderful home served as the perfect place to end a day of site seeing or just enjoying Sausalito. If you like to walk, it is centrally located to the hotspots offered in Sausalito. Easy drive access for Marin county (headlands, Golden Gate, Muir Woods), the wine country and a ferry ride to the city. Elaine, our hostess, was a joy to work with and made our stay wonderful. Thank You Elaine!!

Perfect Sausalito Stay
My family and I found this home charming and a perfect fit. We were welcomed with fresh flowers and an absolutely beautiful view of the bay. The accommodations were just right for a family of five and the location was perfect for strolling into town. We especially enjoyed having wine and cheese on the deck while admiring the view. The home has two outdoor decks and lots of beautiful flowers which add to it's charm. It is beautifully decorated inside as well. We enjoyed spending time in the home as much as Sausalito itself. Sausalito has many good restaurants and markets to explore and Plenty of great shops for those who enjoy shopping. The people in town were extremely friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend this home for anyone looking to stay in Sausalito.

The kids and I had a great time! We had freedom to enjoy the beautiful property and contents. The Bay views were breath-taking during the day as well as night. We enjoyed the back area BBQ's and breakfast on the patio overlooking the Bay! The kitchen was well equipped and perfect for eating in. The town of Sausalito was quaint with a New England feel. It was easy to walk to the waterfront area and ferry. I was impressed with how extremely comfortable the beds were which we needed in prep for our daily adventures. The washer/dryer was a plus to make sure we came home with clean clothes :-) The property owner was friendly, available for questions and helpful in providing ideas for local popular attractions.

Nirvana in Sausalito
We visited Sausalito and enjoyed staying at this incredibly luxurious home with perfect views of boats on the water during an extended weekend. In fact, there were bay views from every room. It was one of the most exquisite vacations we have had and we hope to return next year. It is located just a few minutes away from the restaurants and movie theater in central Sausalito and also close to the Ferry that goes to SF. After we dined at Poggios, we listened to music at the no-name bar in Sausalito and enjoyed the storied nightlife. It was such a joy to return to this romantic retreat which makes an unbeatable combination if you pick up a bottle of champaign nearby at Mollie Stones' market.

Gorgeous romantic hide-away Sausalito
We've stayed in this gorgeous Old World Sausalito view-home for a long weekend and it was one of the best vacations I have had. This is a very private home with the best views of the Bay and Tiburon. There were spectacular views from every room. The home is furnished beautifully with charm and attention to detail. We walked to the village of quaint Sausalito in a few minutes and enjoyed the nightlife and daylife. it was such a pleasure to come home to this romantic retreat. My husband and I met in Sausalito almost 30 years ago. He lived in this home when we met while I owned a houseboat in Sausalito. We fell in love, had children and bought the home from his landlord before it went on the market. We have never looked back and loved every day we lived here. We are passionate about our historic home and the waterfront town of Sausalito! We want to share our experience with you. We now live in Maui.

Why they chose this property

It boasts of character. It has gorgeous water views from every level and is walking distance to all that Sausalito offers. It is beautiful and charming!

What makes this property unique

In addition to the delights of Sausalito, it is a 15 minute drive to San Francisco. It is also a short walk (12 minutes) to the Sausalito Ferry which goes to the San Francisco Ferry Building in the heart of the financial district. It is one of the most beautiful ferry boat rides in the world. It is a 5 minute walk to Caledonia Street which is closed to traffic some nights and has many great indoor and outdoor restaurants.
