An old hillside cottage, with a beautiful pool and stunning views
Walnut is a lovely stone cottage that sits as part of a small cluster of buildings on gentle slope next to its sister cottage Truffle, on the edge of the traditional working hamlet of Le Peyruzel. The outline of the 13th century Chateau Peyruzel is ever present as it looks down across the valley. It is fair to say that the best position of our entire cluster of properties is to be had from the terrace of Walnut! It is in a truly tranquil spot where you can relax unwind and watch the evening sunsets set in as the sky fills with the colours of the fading light. You have a lovely private terrace where you can eat and relax and your own personal entrance into the pool area. The 9 x 5m pool is heated from May to October. It sits in the most perfect location. It has plenty of terrace space on two sides and the most incredible views. In most of the Spring and Summer season it benefits from the sun all day long with a little corner of shade if you need it. The sun sets behind Le Peyruzel and so you can enjoy lovey warm afternoon and late swims after a hard days sight-seeing. The pool is fitted with an electric security cover and is also fully enclosed with self closing gates for added safety. The cottage is very comfortable inside with lots of exposed stone, wood and beams and the kitchen is handmade and incorporates the original stall and trough as it was once an old cattle byre. The tiled floor ensures it stays cool in the Summer. We hope we have thought of everything you will need to create a home away from home including free WiFi. A couple of steps down will lead you into a charming snug sitting room with high ceilings and windows on three sides. There is a comfortable sofa, armchair tables and bureau It is fitted with satellite TV and DVD player. Upstairs you will find a very generous master bedroom with a huge and very comfortable bed, high ceilings and window at each end make this a very light and relaxing room. A big wardrobe and chest of drawers ensure you have plenty of space for everything. The second bedroom is another high ceilinged room with full size bunk beds, hanging storage and chest of drawers. The shower room is fitted with a big corner shower with hand held and rain head shower plus loo and basin. PLEASE NOTE It is possible to book both our gites Walnut & Truffle together to enjoy as two families. this will give a total capacity of 9 (plus a baby if required) you will then have exclusivity of the pool.

Gorgeous villa, beautiful rooms, fantastic location, well maintained pool, magical view from the pool! We had the perfect family stay for 4 nights with two kids. Owners are super friendly and helpful. Please note that the pool does not have a shallow end and that it is shared with one more family.
It was our first time in the Dordogne and what a good choice we made. Charming, rustic gite with access to a shared pool in easy distance of places of interest. I am hesitant to rave about it too much in order to keep it available as our secret place to visit again and again. What made it extra special were the beautiful owners, Carolyn and Jerry. They couldn't have been more approachable, elegant, warm, helpful, kind and knowledgable.
We had a wonderful 10 nights staying in Walnut. What a beautiful location with simply stunning views- uninterrupted bliss! The cottage was everything we wanted, comfy, cozy and inviting. The pool was the cherry on top! With some of the most picturesque towns and villages in the Dordogne at your finger tips, this was one of the best family holidays we have had. Thank you!!
So nicely done. Lovely outside and inside. Beautiful terrace. Amazing bedroom! Such a fab bed! So comfortable. Easy access to lots of lovely places. Carolyn snd Jerry have great advice and reccos. And made reservations for us where we needed them to. Lovely hosts. Unobtrusive but always there when we need them. Thank you. We hope to be back.
Lovely place in beautiful, peaceful surroundings. Close by all major attractions but just slightly off the beaten track. Thoroughly recommend Le Cantine in Daglan. Do book in busier part of season.
We (husband, me and our dog) had a wonderful time at Walnut cottage. Carolyn and Jerry have been most welcoming and great hosts. to us and our cocker spaniel, Toby. They gave us lots of tips for visiting nearby villages, castles, restaurants and the best place to go canoeing.
The gite was home away from home, all that you need is there. The gite is nice and cosy and we were fortunate to have the swimming pool to ourselves.
The view is breath-taking and it was so nice and quiet.
A great break from the everyday hustle and bustle. Shame it was only one week.
Thanks again for everything, Carolyn and Jerry. We certainly will come back.
All the best, Jolanda, Martin and Toby
We really enjoyed our stay at Walnut Cottage. The gite is perfectly located if you want to go and discover the many historic villages and castles in the Périgord, while the pool and the view tempt you to stay put. The cottage itself has a lot of authentic charm to it and is very comfortable. Jerry and Carolyn are very considerate hosts without ever being intrusive. We followed their restaurant recommendations and had a couple of great dinners (Le Petit Paris!).
In short, we immediately felt at home and had a great time.
Just returned from our week in walnut; it’s absolutely perfect! Spotlessly clean, beautifully furnished with lots of very welcome touches. We loved sitting out on the terrace and listening to the French country side around us. Carolyn and Jerry really are superhosts- they are very welcoming and are so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the local area. Their recommendations were always spot on! The gite is ideally placed for visiting the amazing castles, pretty villages and the interesting historical caves. The only trouble is- a week is not long enough! We are already missing this amazing place and lovely Carolyn and Jerry( as well as the little visits from Bambi) Thank you for letting us be part of your lovely area. Alison and Mark x
walnut cottage was just as described. Very well equipped and comfortable and with incredible views. The same views can be enjoyed from the spotlessly clean pool. Carolyn and Jerry were incredibly friendly, welcoming and helpful. The area is beautiful, a car is essential and you will never run out of things to do. It would be difficult to stay here and not feel completely relaxed. A big thanks to Carolyn and Jerry, you take great pride in your gites and are great hosts.
Had a great stay in this lovely cottage - close to so much in the area and 2 minutes from fabulous restaurant treasures hidden in the lovely town of Daglan.
Amazing little cottages tucked between several over laps of hills.....not far from most of the attractions in the Dordogne. Lovely sunsets and something to see from every window.
Cottage has everything one needs to set up housekeeping and if it is not there the owner will find it.....we had a very comfortable stay.
We liked having the owners on site as many places have property managers....owners make sure your needs are being met, answer questions and if you needed some help in an emergency would be there....makes an older traveller feel that bit more secure.
Lots to do in the area and if you want to have a day of rest a lovely well cared for pool. Although the cottages are side by side they are sound proof....with private outdoor eating spots and entrances to the pool....although it is fun to get to know your neighbour.
So much going on in the area.....boat and kayak tours, lots of Chateaus and beautiful gardens to visit.....Sarlat and Lascaux are not far away....
We never watched TV so no idea re how the reception was but wifi was fine.....great laundry room with lines to make use of the sunshine....my favorite drying tool.
Small towns in the area with great boulangeries and patisseries....and a very good grocery store.....and of course lots of markets everyday.
You could search a long time and not find a better place. My biggest problem was the hob...I just never learned the trick to keeping it on....

Very good location. Easy to get everywhere!
This is better located than it might seem. It is 20 minutes from the southern edge of Sarlat ( and the rental car place and train station). Maybe 10 minutes from Domme, which we loved!! And Cenac, which has a very good market AND grocerie. Great restaurant in Daglan, La Cantina. Very good. One can drive easily most everywhere from this cottage, and you can walk quite aways into the little burg of Peyruzal ( no shops there). Fabulous view of this from Walnut, both day and night.
Both Jerry and Carolyn are very personable.
We loved the cottage. One caution, however. It is on two levels, the bedroom(s) and bath on the second level. The steps are fairly narrow and steep to reach it. I had no real problems, at age 72, however I was also quite slow going up.
Quite enchanting countryside. We loved it.

Clean and well equipped cottage in beautiful surroundings, with easy travel to local attractions
Walnut cottage is set in quiet and scenic surroundings. The cottage has everything you need to make it feel home from home. Carolyn and Jerry make you feel at home immediately and offer suggestions of local attractions without being intrusive.
Even though we don't have a dog we loved seeing Inca who is such a gentle and loving natured dog.
My husband found it a great base to explore the area on his road bike with plenty of challenging routes to complete.
We visited Sarlat (early one morning before the crowds, as suggested by Carolyn), went canoeing (which is a great day out), visited the local bread maker Friday night (lovely bread, make sure you get there early before it sells out), Domme is lovely and the caves are worth a visit but go early, and finally the Castles are great to explore with Castelnaud a good visit taking no more than a few hours to do.
Would throughly recommend the cottage and the area as there is so much to explore, and would stay in the cottage again if we wanted to stay in the area again.
Thank you Jerry and Carolyn.

About the host
Hosted by Carolyn Thompson
I moved to France to live permanently in 2016 with my husband Jerry and our Working Cocker Spaniel Inca. It's hard not to fall in love with this area. We had explored this region on holiday when our children were very young and again 20 years later when they were all grown up. Our attraction to the Perigord Noir had never diminished and so now we find ourselves living our own little dream and having an amazing French adventure. Le Peyruzel is a special spot, it remains very unspoiled and operates as a working farming community, crops here are mainly Walnut groves, but also wheat, barley, hay, maize, and sunflowers too. Our properties sit nestled on the slopes and enjoy the most amazing views across the Ceou valley and beyond. The properties are about 200 years old and formed a cluster of ancient farm buildings, they have been lovingly restored from dereliction by the previous owners over a period of 20 years and have operated as gites for many years. A new pool was created in 2017 built into the slope and now benefits from heating giving it a longer season. It is generally ready in May through to October. This has been a most welcome addition to the property.
Why they chose this property
The thing that sold this property to us was the character of the buildings themselves, the quality of their renovation and the views. When you drive in you just feel peaceful, relaxed and at home.... it’s as simple as that!
What makes this property unique
Location, location, location….to be in such a perfect spot and yet so close to so many of the regions gems is what makes Le Peyruzel a special place. We are within 20 minutes drive of most of the regions highlight attractions for example, Domme, Sarlat, Milandes, Marqueyssac, Castelnaud, Beynac, La Roque Gageac.
