About this property

Sunapee Region, Waterfront Cabin on Lake Todd, family-friendly

The charm of Lake Todd is that it is a private lake with three islands to explore and many secret coves for great fishing. It's perfect for small children as the beach has a gentle slope, but deep enough to jump off the end of the dock. You will have your own very private beach and a row boat to get to the islands or to look for fish. The cabin sits up on a small knoll that has views of the lake and the perennial garden.

There are two bedrooms, one with a queen size bed and the other has two twins. The bathroom is located off the queen bedroom with another entrance off the kitchen. There are hard wood floors with an oriental rug in the living room, and the bedrooms are carpeted. The bathroom has a tub/shower combination. Guests bring their own sheets and towels. We can supply sheets and towels for an extra fee but please advise in advance. Blankets and pillows are provided. The nearest grocery store is Market Basket, at exit 9 off of Rte 89 N- about 10 miles away, we urge guests to stop there to get their groceries on the way in. There is a convenience store at the gas station in the town of Bradford, one mile away. There is a post office, library and laundry mat in Bradford as well.

Lake Todd is located in Newbury, New Hampshire - just 15 minutes from the town of Sunapee where you can book a dinner cruise on Lake Sunapee. Mt. Sunapee, with 2900 acres, offers hiking and bike trails. Mt. Sunapee State Park on Lake Sunapee has a sandy beach with a nominal entrance fee. There are restaurants in Newbury, just 5 miles away as well as in the town of Sunapee. New London, about a 25 minute drive, has a summer theater and many restaurants.

Mt. Kearsarge State Forest is about 15 miles away in the town of Warner. Mt. Kearsarge has a wonderful short hike from Rollins State Park with fantastic views on the way to the top of the mountain. If you find the weather tower open, you can see Vermont and the White Mountains. On the way to the park stop at the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum which has family activities and educational tours.

Travel time from Boston is about 1.5hrs and Manchester Airport, Manchester, NH is about 45 minutes away. Easy commute up Rte 93N to Rte 89N and take exit 9.

Our stay on Lake Todd

We loved our stay on Lake Todd. It was so quiet!! It was a nice change from the Boston area where there is always noise. The sky was so dark I got to see my first shooting star. Our 3-year-old twin Grandchildren came up for one night. They LOVED their vacation to Memere's and PopPop's house. They explored and went onto "Bone Island" and looked for buried treasure. They have been talking about it non-stop since then. The cabin was very well stocked with everything you could possibly need. It was so comfortable it felt like a home away from home.

Fun week!

My husband, children (4 and 7), and myself really enjoyed our week. Our original plans were canceled due to flood damages in our home state. We felt fortunate to find a place on the water at the last minute. We swam, floated and went fishing. We also enjoyed using the row boat. Thank you for being quick to respond and making our trip a breeze!

Such a beautiful and well care for rental! The boat was a huge plus!

We enjoyed our time at the cabin and the fishing was amazing! If you are looking for a place away from all the hussle and bustle of the area this is for you. Lots to do within an hour or two of the rental. We definitely will be back!

Quiet Lakeside Retreat

Quiet, private, restful cottage on the shore of Lake Todd. It was just as advertised: homey, clean, modern appliances with its own dock and private beach area. We swam(lazed)in Lake Todd most days using the provided pool meeting but we also traveled 10 minutes down the road to Lake Sunapee State Park where for $5 per adult you can use the beach while enjoying stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Major grocery store (Market Basket) 15 minutes, fully stocked convenience store and gas station 2 minutes, multiple restaurants within 10 minutes. Newbury and Sunapee are where you eat out/take out a few nights and eat in a few nights; that kind of pace. Excellent wifi and 5G coverage too. Owner is wonderful and communicative with restaurants and other recommendations.

Great time!

My family love New Hampshire and this area particularly. The lake with islands were amazing! Loved the private beach! Even though we didn't get lucky with a sunny weather, there were plenty of things to do! Stephanie was very responsive. So accurate description of the rules and things around, that we didn't have any questions.

Lovely and Calm Lakehouse

We enjoyed our stay at this cabin lake Todd very much. At night there was silence and darkness. During the day, just the sound of birds and distant sound of neighbors. All happy sounds. The cabin was comfortable and equipped with almost everything you need to enjoy a relaxing retreat from the city.

Perfect Solitude

The cottage was clean and the kitchen very well equipped. The bed was comfortable. The view over the lake from the cottage was very peaceful. I was fortunate to have a few nights of a full moon view. I was very pleased with the access into the lake. Stephanie was responsive and attentive when necessary. I fully intend to return in the future.

Amazing Week at the Lake!

Our week at the cabin was amazing! The cabin was clean, spacious for our little family, and well stocked. The beach was immaculate and private. My 4 year old played in the sand for hours, we enjoyed jumping and fishing off the dock, and floating on the lake. I can’t say enough wonderful things about this property. We hope to come back next summer! Thank you to Stephanie for letting us stay and being so kind!

Fun for all

We had a beautiful sunny week at the cottage. We enjoyed swimming, fishing and kayaking on the lake. We saw otters and loons. It is a relatively quiet lake interms of speed boats and that was a plus for us. The furniture was comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped.

A Little Slice of Heaven

This Lake Todd cottage is the perfect place for wholesome lake living. We loved floating for hours on the lake, watching the sun rise and set from the dock, eating and playing games on the deck, and watching the abundance of nature in, on, and around the lake. I even watched a bald eagle in the trees across lake several times. The property is perfect with a lakefront area, a grilling and game area, and then up hill to the cottage. The cottage is very well stocked with everything you could possibly need, from water floats and toys to all kinds of kitchen supplies. We hope to come back again!

Perfect for a quiet getaway

This was the perfect location for quiet lakeside time! The private beach and dock are a real treat. Sitting on the deck feels like being in a treehouse; it is shaded and private. The property owner was accessible, friendly, helpful and prompt in replying to questions.

Great Getaway!

This property is exactly as listed. It’s a true gem and a blast from the past. We were able to give my children, ages 8 and 9 a normal vacation during these uneasy times. We had beautiful weather, canoed, used the row boat, swam, picked blueberries on the islands, hiked local trails, watched the sun rise, and best of all, just unplugged and relaxed. We had everything we needed and got to escape to a safe vacation! The lake was beautiful and clean. I did give location 4 stars instead of 5, just because the cottage is off a pretty busy road and you can hear traffic and the neighbors dogs are quite loud, but there’s not much you can do to fix those things!

NH solitude

The cottage is a little dark and it’s a short walk to the lake, but the beach area is really nice and there are tons of bass in the lake. It’s a nice place to spend a quiet week.

We love it!

My wife, two kids and I rented this cabin last year and came back for a week this summer. We love it! The cabin is cozy, comfortable and clean, everything works, and there are lots of items available for renter use (e.g. cooking stuff, books, vcr tapes/dvd's, floats, patio chairs/table, rowboat w/oars and lifejackets, charcoal grill). The lake and water are beautiful, lots of wildlife (we've seen loons, eagles, and an otter among other things), the fishing is great, there are rope swings on the islands, and the neighbors are friendly and very courteous (meaning: quiet at night). There is also lots to do in the area; there are many mountains close by. We plan to rent again next summer - very highly recommended!

Wonderful Lake Todd!

My wife and 2 boys (age 13 and 10) just came back from our second season, week-long visit to this charming house on Lake Todd. The house feels very secluded, nestled in pines about 100 yards from the lake's shore line. The main road is only about 500 yards behind the house so access to all of the great activities near Lake Todd and Lake Sunapee is easy. If you want quiet family time on the water, this is great place for you! There is an island in the middle of the Lake with a fantastic rope swing and wild blueberry picking. It is an easy row of about 5 minutes from the private dock to the island. We went there every day. The house itself is snug but very comfortable, clean, and well appointed. Internet access was no problem. But make no mistake, you will want to stay "off the grid" while relaxing at Lake Todd. If you are an early riser you will experience the incredible sunrise in front of the house over the lake each morning. Truly spectacular! The house's owners have been incredibly easy to work with, supportive and helpful - and are truly nice people with whom we have developed a lovely friendship. Lake Todd is perfectly located for a variety of day-long excursions. Lake Sunapee and Sunapee Mountain (a year round ski and family activity destination) are only 10 minutes away. There is very good dining in New London and Henniker, both about 20 minutes by car. An almost infinite number of other mountain and water activities are within an 1 to 2 hour drive or closer We highly recommend this house and location for a quiet get-away, family fun, outdoor activities, fishing or just sitting on the house's large deck in the shade with a good book.

Home Sweet Home

This is our 4th year renting this lovely cabin on beautiful Lake Todd. We look forward to escaping NY each summer for a well-deserved vacation. We always feel like we are "home" when we pull off Rt. 103 onto Alsubet. We appreciate how well maintained this property is year after year - thanks to the very thoughtful and helpful owners. The photos on this website tell it all - what you see is what you get. Fishing on Lake Todd is great and keeps the "menfolk" occupied while the ladies go into New London for a shopping day. There is an ample supply of hard-cover and paperback books for your reading pleasure with a note from the owners that if you're in the middle of a paperback when it's time to go home - take it along with you! We love the peace and quiet most times but then someone always has to check their email or hop on the Internet for a restaurant recommendation so the wireless Internet is greatly appreciated. If you're here at the right time of year, you must row out to "Blueberry Island" in the middle of Lake Todd and fill up buckets with wild blueberries. A meal at Johnny Appleseed's right down the road is a must. If you're looking for a relaxing week away from the hustle and bustle and want to get back to nature - this is your place!

What a charming location, great value!

What a great little retreat! We really enjoyed the secluded cabin in the woods with a great private beach! We loved the privacy of the cabin and the area around it. Lake Todd is a beautiful spot and we enjoyed fishing right off the dock. We were early and the water was still cold, but still got in for a swim in crystal clear water. Sitting on the deck at sundown listening to the loons on the lake and waking to birdsong was a wonderful treat! The cabin was absolutely as advertised. We appreciated the homey atmosphere, cabin-appropriate furnishings and kitchen that included everything we needed. The cabin was clean, everything looked well maintained. We did call the owner about a couple of questions and got a very cheerful and helpful response to all of our questions -- some of which had actually been covered in the materials left at the house, but the owners went over them again for us. We are from Florida and were looking for a rustic but very comfortable spot. And we found it. New Hampshire is not for big city types who are looking for everything shiny and sterile. It's about reconnecting with nature and this spot is one of the best! We enjoyed outings to Newport and New London, went antiquing in several small towns around Bradford, and climbed Mt. Kersarge. We loved the little cafe in Warner about 5 miles away Caught a sale at the ski shop just up the road that was great.

About the host

Host profile image
In 1961 our family was on a camping trip in NH. We had not made arrangements for the night of July 4th and came across Lake Todd, purely by accident. We had stopped at a nearby gas station and asked if there was any place to stay. We were directed down the nearby gravel road to a series of small cabins (now gone) and luckily found that one was available. The following year we bought some lakefront land and subsequent years added on to our original purchase. In 1977 we purchased the adjacent property with the cabin on it and renovated the building as well as the property around it. Now there is a perennial garden, stone wall and a large private beach.

Why they chose this property

Lake Todd is a unique private lake and over the years the lake has seen changes in the people that live here, no longer are the houses only owner owned, but they have become a special retreat for the owners, some that live only an hour away. Everyone respects the lake and the wildlife in it, we don't have large boats making lots of noise, most everyone kayaks, canoes or fishes from small boats.

What makes this property unique

We have a large bird population, loons every summer nest on one of the islands and we have an eagle that has visited for several years. The lake is small enough to row around the perimeter and look for turtles sunning on fallen logs and in July there are enough blueberries for everyone. You can swim out to the islands from our beach if you're a moderately good swimmer. The lake is quiet and after a day of sightseeing or hiking, it's a very peaceful place to be. We do offer Wi-Fi, but no cable TV - this is a place to relax and reflect.
