About this property

Alpenglow Ranch B&B, Telluride: 3 br / 2 ba Panoramic Views/ 12 Acres/ Pond

ALPENGLOW RANCH B&B offers some of the most spectacular, jaw-dropping views in the entire Telluride region. This unique 'top of the world' location features 360 degree views from atop 12 acres with a pond. The spectacular San Juan Mountains surrounding Telluride viewed from inside or from the wrap-around flagstone terrace are always inspiring. Rarely is this level of view property made available for vacation rentals, throughout the United States, and virtually never at such reasonable price. And now Alpenglow Ranch is a Bed and Breakfast! (Breakfast can be made in the main kitchen or in another kitchenette and brought in to your dining room. the amount of interaction is up to the guests). Also Plant and Mushroom tours in the summer and snowshoe tours in the winter are available, for an additional fee. When available there can be wild mushroom omelettes for breakfast that can be gathered together the day before.
I look forward to hearing what guests like for breakfast. There will always be eggs, vegies, mushrooms, cheese, oatmeal, nuts, fruit, juices, teas, coffee, though I'll let guests make their own coffee, with drip or Keurig.

Alpenglow Ranch takes pride in using sustainable practices whenever possible.
* The house is passive and active, in-floor solar heated.
* Appliances are all energy efficient.
* We use low flow shower heads, LED lights and smart thermostats.
* Water is from a well, that is then vortex conditioned, so every cold water tap has some of the best water you've tasted, that is routinely tested.
* Finishes are mostly BioShield products, low VOC, healthy living paints and stains.
* Cleaners use sustainable and safe products, available to guests also.
* The bathrooms have refillable soap and shampoo containers.
* Reusable cleaning cloths are supplied.
* Recycling and composting are encouraged and made easy for guests.
* Reusable shopping bags are supplied.
* Snow plow runs on propane.

Inside Alpenglow ranch, the glassy Great Room was designed for comfort and views, and the kitchen is a joy for the chef to use. The single level design makes it easy to get around this spacious, comfortable 1200 sq ft country home

Watching the seasons go by your window is a constant pleasure, as well as the wildlife that is always around, sometimes even looking in the windows! You can expect to see Deer, Elk, Fox, Ermine, Rabbit, Hawk and Eagle, with Duck, Goose and Great Blue Heron hanging out in the pond. Topped off by the morning and evening alpenglow, this house is a wonderful place to observe nature at its most beautiful, in a private setting, just a short, beautiful drive from everything Telluride has to offer.
Throughout the spring and summer, you can see horses grazing in pastures belo The house is, on this sunny hilltop, and with infloor heating throughout, it's always cozy at Alpenglow Ranch!

Alpenglow Ranch is a Shared Space, the owner stays in an apartment in the back, with a separate entrance. The main part of the home is where guests stay, with use of the Great Room.

We look forward to being your hosts, and welcoming you personally to Telluride! You can count on a thoroughly unforgettable vacation experience. Since Alpenglow Ranch is 30 minutes away from the ski area, many folks like to mix their days here by enjoying the winter weather in front of the fire on some days and skiing on the ski area on others. Also there is good cross country skiing right out the door.
I keep the driveway open every day, (with very few exceptions), with my own propane powered plow, but in blizzard conditions it can be challenging. I do have several backup plow drivers with larger plows or blowers who can get the road open, though there can be a short delay.

Highly recommended!
Quiet, clean and incredible views! Surrounded by mountains and aspens. We saw several mule deer, chipmunks and heard what we think was coyotes. There was evidence of a bear (if you know what I mean) but we never actually saw any. It was a wonderful relaxing week with breathtaking views out every (huge) window . John was very helpful and only a text away if we needed anything. Highly recommended!

Great place to stay!
The view from the property is breathtaking and well worth the price! The house is uniquely designed and quite interesting. It is very quiet and we even saw some wildlife despite it being winter. The only surprise was that our GPS took us to the wrong property initially! Be sure to go UP the hill!

Incredible views . Very comfortable place. The bed were a bit too small, Full size mattress maybe good for kids or small petite person but not for 6' 1'' 200 lb person. Overall a great spot and fairly close to town of Telluride.

Unique House with a Stunning View
We were delighted with our host, attentive to our every need. The house is lovely and cozy, and the view is jaw dropping. The kitchen is well appointed. I made a blackberry cobbler while there. We also drove into Telluride and had a great time skiing! We may go back in summer/fall to go mushrooming!

More than expected
View and accommodations were exceptional. Host was like your favorite uncle. Host stayed out of site while we were there and went out of his way to make us feel like family. My daughter invited him to a surprise birthday dinner and he fit in like family. Definitely rent a Subaru from flower Subaru next to the airport. Shop for food before you check in. Kitchen is very well equipped. Make sure you have the correct address in your GPS.

Stunning Mountain Escape!
Our family loved this amazing property. The views are beyond amazing! The location is close (25 minutes) to Telluride and all of the activities, but secluded if you want to just stay at the property. We are big photographers and the images captured did not disappoint. We also were able to snowshoe on property and enjoy the wonderful Colorado outdoors. Kitchen is fabulous for cooking! John (the owner) is on site and available if you need anything. He greeted us upon arrival and was very attentive to snow removal, but then did not see him until we were leaving. Thank you for a wonderful stay!!

40th Anniversary
John greeted us when we arrived, and after giving us a walk through and explaining some things about the house, we never saw him again…even though he was on the other side of the house. Around 25 years ago, we drove the Alpine Loop for the first time and I’ve always dreamed of staying somewhere with those views…this was that place! The views are absolutely breathtaking!!! It was the perfect spot to celebrate our anniversary. We did several scenic drives: Last Dollar Rd, Ouray to Silverton, Woods Lake, and the Unaweep Tabegauche Scenic Byweep to name a few. One of our favorite things was sitting on the couch at night and watching the stars come out. We would definitely stay here again!!!

Beautiful Retreat
I picked this home for a visit to Telluride, CO with two of my teen children. The home fit the description and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The views from the family room were spectacular, the kitchen well appointed, the beds comfortable. We rented a small sedan and managed to drive it up the gravel roads to this house on a hill. This would only be an option in the summer; snowy seasons would probably require a vehicle with four wheel drive. The drive to Telluride was less than 30 minutes and a beautiful ride. We spent our days exploring many of the trails and towns within a two-hour drive of the home. Our host stayed on the property in a separate entrance and was out of sight unless we needed him. We would definitely stay here again.

Most Amazing Views!
The views from John's place cannot be beat. We felt like we were staying in a high mountain hut. We never turned on the TV, because we were mesmerized by the landscape in front of us. It was such a treat to watch the wildlife, too. John is a wonderful soul and super gracious host. Please note that bedroom 1 and bathroom 1 on the listing is an extra charge on the core price - noted in the description. Core price includes bedroom 2 and bathroom 2. John's apartment is attached to the main living area by an internal door. He is super quiet. However, we were mindful that he could hear us in the main living area.

Apenglow Ranch is Magical
The Apenglow Ranch is special in so many ways. The home has an epic view surrounded by beautiful mountains. In our case we some amazing wildlife, a beautiful snowscape and stunning sunsets. We saw a heard of over a hundred majestic elk pass through the property. The home has heated floors, a wonderful book and movie collection. Everything in the home is comfortable and it is fully stocked with everything you could possibly need. The Apenglow Ranch also has some of the best water you can imagine and a lovely wood stove. John helped us get the lay of the land and we had an amazing time. Telluride is just a thirty minute scenic drive away. We had the best of Telluride and the best of nature & adventure. I love this place. And I think John made a small paradise that can be shared through VRBO. It's a gift to yourself to stay there that you will never forget.

Perfect Place
4 of us (two adults, two teenagers) stayed for a week and it was a magnificent choice for us. The house is very comfortable and kitchen is fully stocked for those who prefer to cook instead of eat out. House is very unique - built to maximize the million dollar view from every room. The pictures absolutely do not do this place justice, the views are amazing and we have stayed in many VRBO houses all over the Western US. Wildlife right out your windows every day - elk, mule deer, horses. John was very accommodating and there was nothing we lacked. The house is about a 25 minute drive (only about 9 miles) from Telluride and off an unpaved (well-maintained) road. So, you have to decide what you want out of your rental, if you're the type that wants to go out to eat every night and be able to walk down the block somewhere and get coffee in the morning, then this is not the place for you. But, if starting your day with wildlife viewing watching the sunrise over an amazing view and concluding your day with a home-cooked meal and watching the Alpenglow light up the mountains, then you will not find a better spot.

Beautiful Panoramic Views!
I love mountains, and I love fall leaves, so when I saw this listing, I jumped at the chance to book it for the first week in October. It didn't disappoint. Quite the opposite, actually. It was magnificent! And we could see it as the sun rose in the morning until it set at night. Then the stars and milky way came out to play. Add the birds, bugling elk, and a small herd of deer that wandered around the property, and it was absolutely picturesque! The property itself, about a 25 minute drive from Telluride, was quite cozy and unique, built by the owner over a matter of decades. I loved being able to cook in the kitchen, and the cast iron/enamel pans and a gas stove were a very nice perk (regular pans are also available). The beds had a memory foam topper and I believe were full size, which could be small for some couples, but that was ok with us. The futon and couch can be used as extra sleeping space if needed. There was a large ceiling fan in the main room as well as a couple small portable fans, which were nice to have for white noise and added air circulation if desired. Extra blankets and pillows were also available. In addition, our host was very friendly, promptly worked with a request we made, knew a lot about the animals and birds in the area, and to my husbands delight, was able to tell us about the many different mountain peaks in view. We would love to stay here again if we ever get the chance.

Will be perfect for some and not for others
PROS: John, the owner, is an excellent & informative communicator. We voiced a concern; he fixed it immediately. Nice guy The view is spectacular - unlike anywhere we have ever stayed - unbelievable! The kitchen, living & dining areas could NOT be furnished nor decorated any better. Absolutely beautiful & functional! CONS: The house is a shared house. John's independent area is a part of the rented home. There are two doors that do NOT lock -either party could open to enter into the other's space. (At least there is no lock from the guest's side.) We never saw him other when he came in to address a question. Super nice guy - never felt unsafe! Just felt like we were sharing a house w/ someone. Adding knobs that can be locked from both sides (or at least guests' side would help.) It might not bother some, but the bedrooms were too cluttered for my taste. One of the rooms had amazing windows which helped open the cluttered decor of the room while the other room was too dark. (I couldn't have stayed in there.) The bedroom areas just felt cluttered, dusty, and gloomy. (I didn't see dust...it just felt that way bc too much stuff everywhere.) House rule: Cant leave doors open to keep critters out - good reason. However, most of the windows are fixed & can't be opened, and can't open doors for fresh air & there are no screen doors, the house smells stale... you miss out on the fresh mountain air. (Adding screen doors throughout would really help.) Many probably love as is.

Your jaw drops...
....when you walk through the door and see 180 degrees of floor-to-ceiling glass framing breathtaking mountain scenery. It's the most beautiful room I've ever been in. John, the host, was friendly, informative, and helpful. The house is well-appointed and the kitchen has everything you need to cook. Load up on groceries before you come. The nearest markets are half an hour away in quaint Telluride. Only minor negatives are no a/c (got a little stuffy during the day), small queen-ish-sized beds, and the very rough mountain road to get there. If you're looking for a peaceful mountain getaway you won't be disappointed.

Fantastic Visit to Alpenglow
Visited during the Bluegrass Festival. Alpenglow was the perfect place for us to relax and recharge. The property and its majestic views exceeded our expectations (Thank goodness we didn't stay crowded confines of Mountain Village). We only saw John at the property during our check-in & check-out. However, we caught up with him several times at the festival, and we entirely enjoyed his company & assistance navigating the festival. We could not have asked for a better host. Thank you, John for sharing your festival experience, local info, all of your fascinating stories, and especially your amazing home. We will always have the fondest of memories of this vacation.

The host was amazing! So helpful, yet gave us our space. The property was exactly what I wanted. Could see some neighbors in the distance but couldn’t hear them. Gorgeous location. Wow, just wow, on the view! About a 30 min drive into Mountain Village. John made sure to keep the driveway snow plowed for us as we came and went. Will definitely use this property again!

About the host

Hosted by John SirJesse

Host profile image
I grew up in Los Angeles, but was ready to find a beautiful mountain home, after visiting a friend here in 1973, I was hooked. I started studying wild edible and medicinal plants in LA a year before I moved here, and continued learning them here, as well as getting into wild mushrooms too. In 1980 I was contacted to become one of the founders of the Telluride Mushroom Festival. I have a special use permit to lead my hikes on National Forest Service land, and became a Certified Mushroom Identifier for the state.
I designed and built this house myself, and have lived here ever since. I used to rent the whole house on VRBO for 11 years, but got tired of moving out when guests were here. That's why I made the apartment in back to stay in when guests are here.
I lead plant and mushroom hikes in the summers, and snowshoe tours in the winters. New to Alpenglow Ranch is providing breakfast, which can be a wild mushroom omelette, with mushrooms we gather together (for an additional fee for the tour). I also do hand carved signs and custom carvings and antique repairs.

Why they chose this property

This property grabbed my imagination when I first saw it, and I vowed to build a comfortable, efficient home that captures the incredible views it has to offer.

What makes this property unique

The views are like nothing most folks have ever seen! Combined with the comfort, WiFi, DVD selection and privacy, it makes Alpenglow Ranch a great vacation or retreat spot! Named for the pink and orange mountains and clouds seen almost every morning and evening, Alpenglow Ranch enchants all who stay here!
The great room is designed for entertaining, and a perfect place for that breakfast omelette!
