Family Holiday Trip

We booked the home to get our extended family together with adult kids. The rooms were sufficient but use of the “owners apartment” made things less tight. The area was great for being in the country but close to the small towns nearby and easy access to Mass Pike. Our rating of 3 stars comes from several issues. The bedding is old and worn. There were broken appliances such as the blender/food processor, and more glassware would have been helpful. Towels and wash clothes were at a minimum. But one of the major issues related to finding of mouse droppings under the throw pillows and cushions of the couches in the main gathering rooms. We could here the mice at night. The second major issue was malfunctioning of the heating system. The 3 thermastats were Nest type. All were touchy to set often triggering a menu to enter a passcode. The downstairs thermostat would shutoff if everyone was out for several hours. We came back with the temperature in this portion of the house below 60. The upstairs thermostat serving the master bedroom was not functional and caused the heat to remain below 65 with the blower turning on and off every 5 seconds. Granted, the owner was responding to my VRBO messaging. He did send out the cleaning crew to vacuum the mouse droppings and provide additional towels. However it took 3 days for him to address the heating issue even though we were fairly certain something was wrong.

Great Location for Family Reunion

This was a great location for our family. We celebrated a Family Reunion and this was one of 3 houses that we used. All the cousins enjoyed the house. Jacob was responded promptly to any question that we had. Thanks Jacob!!!

Great location

The house was in a great location and we really enjoyed our stay. Toilet paper and paper towels were scarce, so I would suggest bringing your own if you stay here.

House is great; comfortable for our whole group; other things were missing/disappointing

Jacob’s house fit our group of 10, with 5 bedrooms, many beds, and lots of space. Most people felt the beds were decent. The outdoor yard was great - lots of space for family games. Also, a benefit to have 6 bathrooms, all of which were nice bathrooms, with nice towels. So the space itself is nice. The reason we didn’t give our experience more stars is because there were a bunch of hospitality bits that weren’t what we had expected/have experienced in other places. Communication with Jacob was very slow in between when we paid and when we arrived, which made planning stressful and hard. Some questions took over a week for a response. This has never been the case for us at other places. There were no directions about checkin given to us - we had to text as we were on the road driving, hoping it wasn’t going to fall through at the last minute. When we arrived (after checkin time) the heat was not on, so the house was 50-ish degrees. There were no written directions about the heat for the house, so immediately we had to call Jacob for instructions. Thankfully he responded right away. After we got it set up, the house temp was perfect the rest of the time. It would have been great if Jacob could have used the Nest to start the heat before we got there, which is what others have done, or even if we had just known that would be the case. The kitchen is a great space, but the table only fits 6, so 4 were at the bar each night. The oven was hard to operate, but we were able to find a manual online which helped. We brought most of our own baking and cooking tools because Jacob had told us to not expect more than the basics. That was good advice. Cutlery was lacking, but plates and cups were ample. Jacob had said he would leave a thing of wood for the fireplace; paper towels were on the list of amenities. Neither were there. The wood is one thing, because we knew we would have to buy some. But for the paper towels, we were not expecting it and when we raised the issue, Jacob told us that getting the paper towels was difficult. In actuality, after we had paid to have paper towels delivered to the house, when we also discovered that there was no broom for us to sweep, Jacob let us into a small closet that was easy to access to get the broom, and we found it was full of paper towels. It seemed like he was just not wanting the extra expense to provide those. All in all we were happy to be together in the space. The hospitality piece was what was amiss.

Very Comfortable Stay in Idealic Location

I just returned from a one week stay at Jacob's Tanglewood Ranch with my husband, and our adult son and daughter in law. The house is exceedingly comfortable. The pictures and description of the house are accurate and if anything the rooms and amenities are nicer than the pictures. Some highlights: (1) The bedrooms and sitting areas are very thoughtfully furnished; (2) The master bedroom and bath in particular are elegant and well appointed (e.g., nice linen and comforter); (3) The house is bright and sunny with lots of nice windows; (4) The house has good cell reception and fast internet (which allowed us to work during our stay); (5) The kitchen is welcoming and well stocked with dishes, glassware and cooking utensils. It also has high end stove, fridge and dishwasher. It was perfect for my son who has become an avid baker and baked bread each day. (6) The best part of the house for us was a large, welcoming screened in porch with several tables and sitting areas that allowed us to have our meals in an outdoor setting; (7) Also nice were the generous flat grassy grounds around the house -- that are perfect for kids to run around. (8) The location is great with several towns near by (Lee, Lenox) with good restaurants (We particularly enjoyed take-out from Chez Nous); and good hiking, museums, farms and farmers markets, etc. near by. (9) The house was spotless and well maintained (10) Jacob was highly responsive, quickly responding to questions and requests, and went the extra-mile to accommodate us.

Excellent splurge

August 2020. We had the whole house. This beautiful old mansion retained much of its old charm in a few comfortable, communal rooms but has been totally redone including many luxury touches and modern fixtures and large, excellent showers in all the bedrooms - we thought it was a perfect combination. The kitchen is large, modern, and surprisingly well equipped with everything we needed for major cooking activities. The yard is immense and well cared for - we used it al lot for group activities. The A/C worked beautifully. There is a screened-in porch that we used constantly, as well as an open 2nd floor porch. Overall it was a great choice, better than we had expected, clean, quiet and very comfortable. A bit of a splurge for us, but worth it.

Communication is key

When we checked in, there were no directions with information about the house. Because of Covid, it was my understanding that we were renting the entire house. When my younger daughter chose a small (not as nice) room behind the kitchen, I didn't look at it or think anything of it. The door to the room was open from the outside. The next day my daughter asked if the room could be opened to the inside of the house. Apparently (I didn't even realize it) the door to the inside of the house was locked. I asked Jacob, the property manager (by email) if the inside door could be unlocked. Later in the day I saw his email response which 1) accused me of sneaking into that room (which was unbeknownst to us) off-limits. His language quite specifically accused me of "prying into a room you knew was off-limits." In the same response he told me that the housekeeper had reported we were using all of the bedrooms and that we had lied about the number of people staying at the house. (I guess he thought we were a bunch of young people partying--which was completely inaccurate.) There were 6 of us, just as I had said when I signed the contract and we were using only 4 bedrooms. I welcomed him to come over and see us: Two middle-aged lawyers with our adult children. I told him it was offensive that he accused me of "sneaking" and purposefully breaking the rules. I also told him that there was no way the housekeeper saw ALL of the bedrooms being used since we only used 4 of 6 bedrooms. As to his accusation that I knowingly used a room that was not available--by prying open a door, I responded: 1) The door was wide open. It was unlocked. And there were NO instructions not to use the room; 2) Why would I have messaged him and told him we were using the room if I knew it was off-limits? That didn't make sense.; 3) Why didn't he or anyone tell us what, if anything was off-limits in the house. I told him he could come drop by anytime and he'd find a boring family that just went hiking during the days and watched movies at night. When I finished explaining and told him I felt a bit offended by the accusations, he offered a curt "I'm sorry, but can I ask you one more question?" Then he asked: Did you REALLY think that bedrooom was available??" As though I had been lying??? So, even after I explained why we thought the room was available, he continued to accuse me. Finally, there was a beeping from the house alarm that continued for an entire week and which was annoying.

Everything was easy

24 of us had our annual reunion here, and it all went smoothly - that's saying a lot! Vanya and Jacob were super-responsive to emails and texts, including a lot of last-minute detailed requests. The house felt larger than we expected from the pictures, with beds for everyone (we brought 2 air mattresses), 3 or 4 common areas depending on how you count (plus kitchen) to spread out into, and beautiful grounds. We'll probably be in another part of the country next year but we hope to be back in 2 years!

The house and property are fabulous.

Our family came together from many parts of the country. This home was perfect. It accommodated all very comfortably. 3 sitting areas with wonderful fireplaces were all used. It had old world charm with modern appointments. I'd recommend this home for large family gatherings.

Delightfully Modern and Spacious

The house was incredible! Surprisingly modern and spacious. My group of 18 slept comfortably and there was plenty of common space to gather. The house was full of modern amenities and the lawn and land was also very spacious. Vanya was communicative so the check-in and check-out process was seamless. I would come back with my group again!

Perfection!

We had a wonderful time at this beautiful home! We were 5 families with plenty of little (under 5) kids among us. The house accommodated us beautifully. Everything was clean, spacious, well stocked and attractive. The house is a beautiful historic home with tasteful, modern additions and a great kitchen. All five bedrooms were private, had their own bathroom, and were relatively sound-isolated from the kitchen which is the hub of the house. Decor was simple, tidy, attractive - no dusty knick knacks. Location was great with lots to do nearby. Large flat yard perfect for playing and relaxing. We are hoping to return next year!
