Just over the hill from Oakura Bay, Parutahi Beach is one of the sheltered beaches nestled around the Whangaruru Harbour coastline, south of the Bay of Islands on the east coast. The harbour feels well separated from urban life and is approximately a 45-minute drive from Whangarei and 50-minute drive to Russell. Here you can fish for your dinner (snapper, trevally, kahawai, John Dory, gurnard, flounder and mullet can usually be found in the harbour and kingfish just out the harbour), enjoy boating, diving, kayaking, swimming and walking, with stunning scenery and a relaxed atmosphere.
Our holiday house is set just meters from the beach, with plenty of private off-road parking for vehicles and boats. You can launch your boat from the far end of the beach, as the sand is firm there. Soak up the sun on the front deck or cook up a storm on the extra large 6-burner barbecue, all while looking out at the water.
The house has been fully renovated in 2017/18, with all new fittings in the bathroom and ensuite, and a new, modern kitchen installed. The new second lounge is a great retreat for grandparents coming to stay with their extended family, or for the kids to hang out in at the end of a busy day on and in the water. The layout makes it easy for two families to stay together.
There is a quiet, family-based camp next door, so particularly over the height of the summer, there will be other families enjoying the area, as well as yourselves. Parutahi Beach gives road access to the baches around the point at Ohawini Bay and boat launching at the far end of the beach. There is a speed limit of 30 km/hour on the beach. People tend to swim and use the beach along the entire length, including the south end closest to the house, which vehicles tend to stay away from and boat launching is unsuitable here.
Over the hill at Oakura Bay, there is charter fishing available, the local dairy with fuel pumps and dive fills, and the local fish and chips store. A 20-minute drive takes you to The Gallery and Café Helena Bay Hill, which has magnificent views, a delicious breakfast/lunch menu and cabinet food, great coffee and stunning artworks to view.
Please note all beds do have pillows, pillow protectors and mattress protectors supplied; all other bed linen and towels/beach towels/tea towels, you will need to bring for your stay.
Under 'kiwi bach' attitude, guests are expected to clean the house (floors vacuumed, bathrooms cleaned) and do the dishes before you leave. Thank you :)
