We loved our stay on Little Rice Lake! Jimmy and Robyn were so helpful and answered all of or questions and gave wonderful recommendations. They even baked us homemade bread! We will definitely be returning to their beautiful property!
We stayed here for a guys trip up to the UP. We did a little fishing, exploring and lots of relaxing. It was a nice sized cabin on a quiet lake - the kayak and canoe were fun to use. Its close proximity to Houghton/Hancock made for easy exploring and dining options. Plus it was only a short drive to Copper Harbor to get to explore Lake Superior.
My boyfriend and I spent 11 nights at Jimmy and Robyn's lovely cabin near Little Rice Lake this August. It was in a great location and they were exceptional hosts who were staying nearby and checked in daily. They even accomodated changing our reservation TWICE last minute. Our only challenge was with the amount of stuff inside the house which made it hard for us to 'move in' for our stay. We worked remotely while we were there and the wifi was great but there is no cell reception. This was a new part of the country for us and we loved going over to Lake Superior at township park. If you go mid -August, check out the Pasty Festival in Calumet!
Beautiful and clean cabin. We made good use of the deck and fire pit. Jimmy and Robyn were very responsive to questions and offered area recommendations. The internet was strong enough to allow us to work remotely as needed.
This house was exactly what we needed. Our family spent more time together and not glued to electronic devices. The owners were super helpful and answered every question. I would stay here again.
This was an experience like no other! Nature at its finest. Beautiful scenery, wildlife, gorgeous weather. The home was so warm and accommodating. Pure enchantment.
We absolutely loved our stay by Little Rice Lake! The cabin was beautiful and well stocked with everything we needed, including extra blankets for those cooler nights, books, games, and even maps. We had no cell or internet service in the cabin, but that's not a complaint, as we enjoyed being entirely disconnected. We had downloaded music before we left, and brought a portable speaker, but there's a CD player stereo available too. We did everything we hoped, from visiting the nearby sandy Lake Superior beach, to kayaking from the boathouse, to roasting marshmallows over the fire pit, to watching the various wildlife in the woods, to morning coffee on the deck with the sunrise. Jimmy was so kind, friendly, and quick to respond. We can't wait to come back!
Overall, we had a great time. Hosts were very nice and responsive to questions. The proximity of the residence to little Rice Lake was great. We love kayaking - so this was fantastic. The cabin was very clean and spacious. You have to drive about a mile down a dirt road to get to the residence.
There is a very strong mildew odor which comes up from the ground level of the cabin. This is very noticeable when we had to close up the windows with the cool evenings. Also, the gas grill was defunct. Fortunately the host provided charcoal to use in a small, on-the-ground cast iron grill. Overall, we had a fine time.

Good people - not a hit for our family
Jimmy and Robin are very nice people. We were there during a very busy time for them personally. They had just sold another property and had stored a lot of the furniture from that property in the house we were staying in. It was extremely crowded with unnecessary furniture. There was a dining room table in the bedroom for example.
The first impression when we arrived on the property was not good. There was a lot of lawn equipment and snow equipment covered in tarps and blocking the view to the beautiful house.
We had an issue with bedding that had a foul smell - which they took care of the next day with heartfelt apologies. To make up for the bad neigh’s sleep they brought us a bouquet of beautiful flowers and a fresh loaf of bread. That was kind.
I didn’t realize that kids were not allowed at the house. I didn’t see that in the property description, but I was told that is the case after we left. If I would have known that this was not a kid friendly house I would have definitely stayed somewhere else. After we got home I was given notice that we were being billed an additional $200 for “unregistered guests” and for the added stress that we caused them by having our three kids (14,12, and 6) in their house.
We are paying the fee and not contesting it. We didn’t cause any damage, which I verified with Jimmy, but I decided to leave this review just to ensure that families do not attempt to have their vacation at this house. It is not a family friendly house.
We loved the peaceful atmosphere. The house was so cute. Loved the porch!! We’d never been to upper peninsula. So remote. So many coastlines. Watched the sunset. Amazing!! Copper harbor had cute shops. Bought a picture at an excellent gallery there!! Great food!! Loved the shops and hiking trails in Houghton!! Wow!! We LOVED our hike in Estivan tree preserve. Just so beautiful!! Thanks for sharing your house so we could see all that!! We canoed one night that the water was like glass. Thanks for having canoes we could use!! We would love to come back!! 😁😉
Beautiful, quiet location! The lake is great for canoeing or kayaking; no motors so the kids could paddle to their heart’s content. The cabin is larger than it looks in the photos and fully stocked! Not to mention the cookies on the table when we arrived. Just a short drive to the wonderful swimming beach on Lake Superior. And the stargazing is amazing!!!
Great communication with owner Thanks for the awesome vacation destination!
Jimmy and Robyn's Home/Lodge is 22 miles from Houghton, but 5 minutes from the most beautiful Lake Superior beach we've ever seen and a short walk to Little Rice Lake and free kayaks and canoes provided with the rental. Their home is immaculate with EVERYTHING you need provided. Except for TV, Internet, Phone service and clear radio. Jimmy has a CD player, so bring your own music. So come for a chance to get off the grid and enjoy the peace and quiet of Jimmy's place. And some 'home made' Jimmy bread as well. We'll be back. Tom & Karen - Naperville, IL
