Beautiful home right on Great Tisbury Pond
Wonderful hosts who were incredibly welcoming and helpful while we were on the island. We loved the setting on Great Tisbury Pond - we kayaked every day in the pond (about a 20 minute paddle to the ocean and beach) and enjoyed the sandy beach in front of the house. We would definitely stay again!

Beautiful house and beautiful location
The house was perfect for our family of 5. It was clean, organized and well equipped as a rental property. The location was perfect on a nice big, flat, pond--which was great for kayaking and very safe for kids.

Lovely stay
Felicity and Joel are a lovely people and they have a lovely home. The view of the pond is outstanding and the short path to the shore led us to their kayaks, our rented boat with small outboard and fishing and swimming. And crabbing- though I was not successful! Thank you!

Beautiful and Unique West Tisbury Retreat
We had the most lovely week at Joel and Felicity’s beautiful home. Waking up every morning to views of Deep Bottom Cove was a magical way to start each day and catching the sunset in the evenings and the stars at night made for the perfect end to the day. We and our children (8, 12, and 14) loved taking the kayaks and canoe out to Tisbury Great Pond and exploring the area - finding all sorts of animal prints in the sand and shells along the water. Joel and Felicity were very responsive and the house had everything we needed. What a great week!

Priceless Vineyard experience
Felicity and Joel are lifelong seasonal island residents and have built the ideal refuge on Tisbury Great Pond. The house is tasteful, perfectly equipped and fully modern. It is nestled in the trees with picture windows overlooking the pond, so you wake up in the master bed with a view of the water and possibly swans, herons, cranes or gulls passing by, and have the same glorious view from the kitchen and living areas. They thoughtfully set us up with a canoe and a pair of kayaks so we could explore the pond and reach the ocean-facing barrier beach. The kids had a blast mucking around on the edge of the pond and riding in the canoe. The house is about 5 minutes drive down a dirt road off of West Tisbury - Edgartown Rd, so there is a modest barrier to the rest of the island but it is actually pretty centrally located once you reach the main road. We also used a bicycle with child seats to go places and that worked great too. The airport is nearby and planes often do their final descents over the pond, but there's minimal plane traffic early or late in the day or at night. Our hosts were staying nearby and very accessible for any requests. We felt very privileged to enjoy their unique slice of paradise during our stay.

About the host

We hope you enjoy your time on Thumb Point. Between the two of us, Joel and Felicity, we've spent 108 summers or parts thereof within 400 feet of this spot. We love it, and now we live here year-round, in this house built (in 2015) for us, our retirement, and extended family. Please cherish and enjoy it and the beauty and tranquility of the land and water around it.

Why they chose this property

From Joel -
Serene, secluded, scenic. A delightful wooded waterfront hideaway abutting undeveloped forest with oaks and pines. Accessible from the West Tisbury/Edgartown Road via a 1.6 mi. single-lane private dirt road. The house is situated on 5.7 acres and out of sight from neighbors to the north and south that sparsely populate Thumb Point. No neighbors to the east and the one neighbor on the other side of the cove is largely obscured by the woods. The house is about a 15 min. drive from Edgartown and Vineyard Haven and about 20 min. from Oak Bluffs.

From Felicity -
My father came to the island every summer of his life. My mother married him in 1931. They continued to come. We 5 children spent all our summers with lots of cousins (otherwise only seen on Thanksgiving).
In 1965, Mother and Father met the Fishers, a couple in their 90's, who were charmed by the nice young (50's) couple, and took them to see a hunting camp they had built on Deep Bottom Cove off Tisbury Great Pond. The camp was on a small bluff, close to the water, with 1,500 feet of shoreline on 5.7 acres.
Mother and Father bought it. In those years, opening the barrier beach to flush the Great Pond in support of oysters and other shellfish was done with shovels. I did my part.

There have been a lot of changes on the island, with an accelerating building boom, and many more people arriving by air. You see this growth most starkly in the winter. On this part of Deep Bottom Cove, we look across to the same 3 houses and barns, now much harder to distinguish, due to tree growth, as we did 50 years ago. In the last half century, one additional house (ours) has been added to this side on of the cove, although two have been replaced.
Human-induced change is minimal. It's relaxing to experience change due to only natural processes, the tides and weather, the decades of slow transition from tiny scrub woods, to taller scrub woods.
It's relaxing.
It's reassuring.
We hope you find it so.

What makes this property unique

From Joel -
How do you take your water? Ocean, Great Pond, Cove? You have your choice because all are within convenient reach. The calm waters of Deep Bottom Cove are 100’ from the house and lead to Tisbury Great Pond, which is just a narrow barrier beach away from the waves of the Atlantic Ocean and the Vineyard’s beautiful south shore.

But also, the Trustees of Reservation’s Long Point visitor center is a 1-mile wooded walk from the house which will bring you to an assortment of wooded walking trails through conservation land and include easy access to Long Point beach.

From Felicity -
I know many other places on the island that have been cherished by families for centuries. Our half century is not record-breaking. But if you can slow down to island pace, you will have what is to us, our sisters and brothers and their children, and our children, a unique benefit.
