About this property
EARTHWORM 2 HOUSE - Light Filled Underground House - in the safest area in town.
Very Spacious and beautifully located. A great light filled dugout close to town, with fantastic views, a stunning sunset that actually comes into the whole house, and the most beautifully circular cut walls with extra high ceiling for a spacious and comfortable stay!!
HUGE WEEKLY & MONTHLY DISCOUNTS... set up for Artist retreats, family longer stays, working holidays, work trips too. (50-65% off)
Our beautiful dugout has the most stunning machine and artistry cut carved walls, high ceilings, and Opal & Potch to be found hidden in every room. We are only a 1-2 minute drive or 15 minute easy walk from the main town strip, and we are in a very safe and secure part of town; both structurally and for security.
It's a very special dugout, some say it's one of the best in town!
Light filled, large and very comfortable. The temperature may be 6 days of over 45 degrees (as it is right now while I'm typing this) ... BUT INCREDIBLY the inside of the house is a pleasant 23-24 degrees!! - it's not at all stuffy, the air is fresh and stone filtered. It's just perfect temperature ALL YEAR ROUND!! - we do have an air conditioner, but it's really just so people who don't believe us feel secure. You don't really get the true Coober Pedy Underground Living experience if you don't trust me. You'll never feel a place Welcome you inside, like a dugout does on a hot day! The other great thing about this dugout is its fully enclosed, bug and fly free, inside-outside verandah room... It can double as a spare room if someone in your group is initially worried they won't feel comfortable underground - WHICH WON'T HAPPEN ONCE THEY PEER INSIDE!! - Meaning you don't have to spend all day convincing someone in the group that they WON'T feel claustrophobic or scared in our dugout. The room has been set up to enjoy the space outside a dugout, the sunset and the electric BBQ grill.
Now with added Free HIGH-SPEED WIFI, and new Smart TV in loungeroom, plus a brand new Front Loader Washing machine.
Our house is located right in a main route for the local Kangaroos and Emus... and directly across the road from the FREE Noodling (opal finding) grounds. A beautiful and calming location to spend hours searching for riches in nature.
PLENTY of Car and Van (campers, trucks, etc) space. With two undercover carports too.
*Occasionally some may find dugouts uncomfortable, especially the small hand cut, painted and crumbling, or busy and cramped ones may be hard to go in... this one however has made even the worst claustrophobic at ease and feel safe. It is very spacious inside... with incredibly high ceilings, and natural light throughout if the curtains are opened.
We are super family friendly and have everything you need to just relax and let the kids (of all ages) do their thing... with you or safely away from you too. They can watch DVD's on their own TV even...
We do allow dogs, but you'll need to let me know when you book: there are some important guidelines that will need to be agreed to. Cats -unless okay to stay in the secured outside room or laundry area, are not allowed- I'm very allergic, I'm sorry.
This dugout is uniquely situated and dug to allow phone reception from almost all parts of the house, including deep inside which is extremely rare for dugouts, but handy for busy people still needing their phone reception... note this only applies to Telstra & Optus customers. We now have Starlink hi-speed WIFI Internet for anyone wanting to stream, study and/or WFH.
We are in a safe and lovely part of town, with wonderful dugout neighbours. We are within an easy walk to the Drive-In Cinema on a Saturday night too... plus a nice evening walk from the bars, restaurants and night-life.
We are also very close to the Hospital.
Coober Pedy is spectacular... views everywhere you look, and plenty of space to feel the freedom of being in such a uniquely stunning and beautiful location. It's quiet, calm and has plenty of local Emu's, spiky lizards and Kangaroos visiting.
This place is best suited to all people visiting town, and is a walkable distance from the Greyhound bus drop off. Rental cars are available from the airport and many guests have found a lift from the airport on the day - but sadly no taxi or Uber is in town.
However, the most incredible secret about Coober Pedy is actually how incredibly friendly the locals are.
We have two dugouts in Coober Pedy, both are very similar in what you get... however, one is in town, the other 4kms outside of town - however that one is extremely spacious. We only like the light-filled, high ceiling, safe machine cut artistry made walls, so they may be described as similar, yet they are both equally unique and beautiful in there own right!
Lot 1 BOULDER AVENUE
DRIVING DIRECTIONS- from the main street (Hutchison St) pass the IGA and drive 100metres until you reach Umoona Rd (you'll see the back of the Drive-In cinema screen) - turn RIGHT onto Umoona Rd... follow for about 1.5 kms until you get to Harlequin Dr (the road just past Jewellers Shop Rd) turn RIGHT into it, follow along and keep LEFT at the fork (the fork is about 500metres down the road- it will turn into Helmis St) - BOULDER AVE is the road 100metres from fork - 1 BOULDER RD is the 2nd house from the corner - you'll see some high vis earthworms to let you know you have arrived!! - I have placed a few photos and a map to find it easily, please screenshot before heading to Coober Pedy - and look out for our bright "Earthworm" poles and our big "#1 hi-vis" sign... PLUS our Green Door - where you'll find the keysafe to the left... if it's a bit stuck, it may be sticky dust - be tough with the black button on the left (next to code) and open at same time.

About the host

A happy world traveler in the past, I love the world for all of its quirks and uniqueness, having traveled to 84 Countries, and having lived in 6 of the Aus states, I feel I'm qualified to call Coober Pedy a truly special and unique place. Hands down my favourite place in Australia, and one of my favourite places in the world full stop. It's a place that oddly seems like it's good for the soul, and as the underground houses are the most ecologically friendly houses in the world, I'm excited to have others discover the magic of living underground. I'm Mum of a fun and loving 10 year old and our newest addition; our busy, bubbly baby boy, (Ziggy) and my partner of 17 years is an Ecologist, so we especially feel the eco benefits of having a eco-friendly house.
Why they chose this property
I'm very particular on how I like my dugouts - I am drawn to the dugouts cut into the hill, and not dug down. I like the feel of natural light, and the safety of a purpose built underground house. It doesn't matter the temperature outside - inside is ALWAYS 22-24 degrees. The walls are truly spectacular and works or art - you can feel the calm instantly, and you'll never have a better nights sleep than in a dugout. Coober Pedy is an exceptional place, and the stars are incredible at night. This property is close to everything, and unlike many more cramped dugouts that were hand-cut this is a very spacious one. With exceptionally high ceilings, natural light, and stunning orange and opal laced circular walls. Minutes walk to town, drive-in cinema, underground churches, golf course, bars, restaurants, and hospital, the location is wonderful for taking all of Coober Pedy in. We also have one fully enclosed room (and the bathroom) built outside the hill to allow peace of mind for anyone worried about entering the cave-life.
What makes this property unique
Underground - nature - kangaroos and emus - nothing is quite like staying underground.
