Best back yard in Sonoma!

We absolutely loved Rick’s home! We really enjoyed unwinding in his beautiful back yard! His entire home is well appointed and comfortable! I highly recommend his place.

Charming Sonoma Stay

We so enjoyed our stay. A short drive to Sonoma Plaza, and a nice location to Wineries both north and south of Sonoma, and even to Napa. The home is very comfortable and backyard is an oasis. Prospective renters should be aware that while the online listing specifies bathroom 2 has a toilet and shower, it is actually a half bath (toilet only) and the 2nd shower is an outdoor shower. This detail is apparently listed in the description. We made it work for our family and the charm of the home and backyard outweighed the slight inconvenience.

Lovely home, convenient location

We enjoyed our stay at this lovely home. Great gardens, well-appointed kitchen, cozy fireplace. It was a delight to be able to sit outside and watch the frenzy of beautiful hummingbirds at the feeders set amongst the roses, zinnias, and dahlias. Location was quiet and provided easy access to explore the wine regions of Sonoma, Napa, and Lodi.

Peaceful

Absolute gem. Morning coffee in the garden with the hummingbirds flitting about. Wish it was a week stay instead of the weekend.

Surprisingly Private

Things that had me worried were chickens and that one of the showers was outdoors. Chickens were penned up out of sight/out of mind and the outdoor shower was great! For the number of homes in the neighborhood the backyard was quite private and restful complete with hammock, fruit trees and garden. Worked out great for our family of 5 adults. We would stay there again if back in the area.

great house, beautiful backyard

Our family really enjoyed our stay here, the backyard is a beautiful place to relax. Rick communicated with us often, and checked in on us to make sure everything was going OK. It was nice to see a gift basket upon arriving as well! Highly recommended place

Family vacation

The place was perfect. We loved the garden. Me, my 3 daughters and granddaughter went to explore Napa and Sonoma. It was close enough to a lot of great restaurants and to great wineries. Rick did an excellent job of making us feel welcome.

Exactly what we wanted in our stay

This home is located in a very desired and established neighborhood with beautiful trees and a gorgeous hillside view in the back. The beds and seating arrangement were very comfortable. We cooked. We cooked a lot and found everything we needed (egg poacher, roasting pan, salad spinner, cast iron skillets, griddles and a gas grill outside). Rick left a lovely basket of goodies that we sure appreciated. Most important to us was being able to sit at an amble and sturdy table to play games and eat our meals. There were plenty of folding chairs to make sitting outside, inside, and around the sectional work well. We were lucky to spend some mornings outside on the patio and also enjoyed a real windy and rainy storm. We picked this place because we wanted our local son to be able to bring his dog and it all worked out so well to have the yard. They have beautiful chickens at the side of the house (that they fenced off with a portable fence because of our dog which I appreciated). I was absolutely charmed by the gas fireplace and the Christmas tree and decor. I could tell the homeowners loved their home and it was a perfect fit for our party of seven adults and a dog. Don't despair that there is one full bath and one half bathroom. The full bathroom is remodeled and we got in and out quickly. I would really rather have charm than spacious and soulless spaces, but I grew up in a family of seven with one bathroom that had only a clawfoot tub. We had a good meal our first night at El Molino Central where you order and eat outside. We enjoyed the smaller wineries about 4o minutes away - Wilson and Bella. We did go to Benziger which was so beautiful, but it was a rainy day and we didn't get to enjoy the beauty as much as we wanted to.

Very clean and comfortable. Loved the home. Great location and quiet.

Beautiful property. We spent most evenings and early mornings in the most relaxing back yard. We hope Rick’s home is available for our next trip to Sonoma. Nice basket of goodies for us which we enjoyed. Highly recommend!

Stunning

Rick, thank you for a wonderful stay in your lovely home. The group enjoyed it immensely. The basket of goodies and chocolates were a nice touch! So sorry to have missed it myself as I dealt with a broken foot but glad the group was able to enjoy! Will keep in mind for next time

Lovely, comfortable house with great view.

The owner was very accommodating of our last minute booking. The house is comfortable with 3 bedrooms, a full bathroom, a half bathroom, and a fully stocked kitchen. The outside patio and yard have a wonderful view of the hills with lots of flowers and fruit trees. We also liked seeing the chickens in their enclosed pen. It is a short drive to downtown Sonoma. We enjoyed our stay in this peaceful hillside house!

Fantastic Retreat for a Thanksgiving Holiday

This house was so perfect to host our visiting family for Thanksgiving. We are Bay Area locals and needed space to spread out and wanted to spend the holiday in wine country. Rick’s place is so amazing and spacious – it’s even better than the pictures show. Inside of the house there is a ton of room for a family to spread out. The bedrooms were all beautifully decorated and the beds were very cozy. The kitchen was fully stocked – we had more than enough tools on hand to cook a turkey for Thanksgiving! The grounds outside are really serene – there aren’t any other properties behind the house, so you have beautiful views of the canyon behind you, and there were some stunning sunrises while we were there. There were visiting deer in the morning, and lots of hummingbirds. Rick also has chickens and a bee hive, which are something you don’t see too often! I highly recommend staying here for a family friendly retreat – it’s super close to charming downtown Sonoma, and a super short, scenic drive to other wine country destinations – Napa, Yountville, St. Helena, Calistoga, Petaluma and the coast (Bodega Bay, etc.). There are so many things to do in the area – it just might be tough to tear yourself away from Rick’s Sonoma retreat! Finally – Rick was super easy to communicate with and with answering any questions. He also set up his home so it felt like a hotel – a sweet gift basket with treats for the family, and mints on each bed. I hope to book here again soon!

Lovely home with a beautiful garden and patio.

This home is the perfect place to stay while in wine country. The house itself is very comfortable, clean, and well appointed. The garden is definitely the highlight. Peaceful and relaxing, it was so nice to be able to sit out and watch the hummingbirds and honeybees do their thing. It's perfectly set up for just lounging or having a dinner a party. The central location was very convenient for us as well. Rick is a great host and easy to work with.

Amazing escape just outside of downtown Sonoma

This place was such a gem! We were treated to a gift basket upon arrival. The house was charming and even cuter than in the photographs. The backyard was an amazing space and such a treat. Some of the ladies I were with even did morning mediation. Rick was such a great host and very prompt at returning questions. This will be the first place I look when returning to Sonoma.

Great vacation home!

We enjoyed our stay very much. The neighborhood is quiet and the house is clean, comfortably furnished, and looks as if someone just moved out and left everything behind. The kitchen has every gadget one could imagine, and the chickens out in the side yard are vastly entertaining. I had to laugh about one small detail -- we've rented several homes in Hawaii, and they never seem to have paper towels in the kitchen! Along with everything else, this house had paper towels, for which I was very grateful. The owners seem to have thought of everything.

Wonderful quiet and cozy cottage. We would rather stay in the comfort of the house instead of driving around wine tasting. Second year at this place and will make it an annual visit.

Beautiful views from backyard!

We came down for the wine festival and had the best of time! The house was perfect for our small group! The way the owner has it set up in the backyard is so beautiful and serene. We had a nice breakfast outside on both mornings and enjoyed a nice evening inside in the closed in patio. Plenty of towels and blankets which we definitely appreciated! We would definitely stay there again when we come down!

Beautiful Grounds and Comfortable Home

We loved our stay in this Sonoma house while there for a Napa family wedding. The welcome basket with a bottle of wine was an unexpected pleasure. Meeting the friendly owners and the kids able to feed the chickens was great experience for all of us. The beds were comfortable with well -stocked rooms with fine linens, etc. , and many games and puzzles to keep everyone happy. The grounds were fantastic: great flower beds on several levels, hammock, outdoor furnishings, and fire pit and more. Lovely sunsets and sunrises with a back yard backing up to a mountain. We would recommend this home highly for families or small groups visiting Sonoma.

About the host

Hosted by Rick Avery

Host profile image
We purchased the property as a second home in late 2012 and lived and worked in San Francisco. We were coming up on weekends but could not resist moving here full time and commuting to the City for work. The commute is well worth it and we love it here!

Why they chose this property

We love to garden and have many flowers, shrubs, fruit trees, grapes, vegetable gardens, raised beds, roses, and more. Our chickens will keep you entertained and you might be able to have some fresh eggs too. Our lot overlooks a massive field and mountains in the back of the property which affords a most beatiful view and often Moon rises.
