About this property

Unique apartment in Cartmel centre. Unrivalled location.Garden.Fab views.Sleeps4

This apartment is the converted servant's quarters of a gentleman's residence in the heart of one of Lakeland's prettiest villages, and just along the lane from L'Enclume - one of the very few UK restaurants with three Michelin stars. It offers a chance to forget the car, or use as a base to discover all the Lake District has to offer - Lake Windermere is a 15min drive away. The flat is not overlooked, and the main bedroom overlooks Cavendish St, just along from the famous arch, yet offering peace and quiet as we're at the top of the house, and above street noise. You can sit on the windowseat and just watch the world go by! Our living room has fab views, over to the smallest National Hunt racecourse in Britain.

Eat at the dining table inside, and observe the world around you as you gaze over the rooftops, and down onto our courtyard. This stone walled yard is for your exclusive use, and has a garden sofa and chairs for al fresco dining, a bench seat, and there are cushions and more chairs in our stone store - again for your exclusive use. So if you fancy soaking up the sunshine after a day's walking; a read with a glass of wine, then this is the perfect spot. The en suite master bedroom with kingsize bed looks out towards the Priory. Just off the village square, and adjoining the famous arch, the apartment is seconds away from great pubs, just along the lane from the UK's top restaurant, three Michelin starred L'Enclume, and an array of village shops. You can BBQ in the courtyard - the property's enclosed English Garden patio is your's alone to enjoy. Yards away is the racecourse and footpaths over the Fell are just beyond. The apartment retains bags of character, with beamed ceilings (and walls and floors!),. It's beautifully kept, and has had new kitchen, bathrooms, and refurbed bedrooms all in the last four years. Bed1 had new handbuilt furniture made and installed during summer '20. There's unlimited WiFi; flat screen TVs, with all catch up services on living room smart TV, and Alexa in there too! Integral DVD player in Bed1, and an Echo dot. Outside in the yard, as mentioned, is our store house to accommodate your bikes/outdoor paraphernalia. Well behaved dogs welcome by arrangement.

Parking restrictions have been introduced in the village. Alison can give you further details. There is a large race course car park (chargeable) about a thirty second walk away.

Other bits we'd like you to know: We've had lovely feedback about our place, and lots of repeat bookings. It's kept in beautiful condition. Some of our guests have come for lots of long weekends, others have had the place for six weeks at a time - we're really flexible on what we offer.
We do ask for a returnable, good housekeeping bond, depending on season, but usually £100, payable on key release, via bank transfer.
It's warmed by smart electric heaters. There's also a log stove effect fire in the living room, and heaters and towel rads in the bathrooms.
Full instructions on how to work everything, and where to find things, will be waiting for you. Alexa in the lounge; and Echo Dot and DVDs for Bed1; board games, cards, books, guide books and OSmaps are all left for your perusal.
And you'll find extra touches throughout the flat, to make your time at our place go smoothly and leave you wanting to come back again - hopefully !

Lovely apartment in pretty village
This is a lovely apartment in a very pretty, friendly village. Great pubs, nice places to eat and interesting shops. Super location for tourist spots, only short drive to Lake Windermere and just a stroll through the alley to the racecourse where we had a fab evening watching the racing. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and it was great to have somewhere cosy, clean and comfortable with all mod cons to come back to after our days out. The information that Alison provided with suggestions of thing to do, places to visit, eat etc, were really helpful. We will look forward to visiting your lovely home again. Thanks

Great central position
The flat is nicely appointed and provided everything we needed. I felt like Mary Poppins with interesting rooftop views. Cartmel is a great experience with lovely walks from the property. The second bedroom has its limitations as can be seen in the photos but the rest of the property has plenty space and height.

A distinctive lofty perch for discerning travellers
We had a short break in Cartmel in early October and stayed in this delightful property. Booking through Vrbo was quick and easy and Alison the host responded promptly to our numerous questions and provided excellent information about Cartmel and the surrounding area. Cartmel is a charming village surrounded by Cumbrian hills and has all the amenities required for pleasant stay. The flat is in the heart of the village, close to pubs, restaurants, shops, the racecourse and the wonderful Cumbrian coast and countryside. It has a lovely exterior courtyard and has been furnished with care and attention as befits a cherished family home. It was such a cosy space to spend time in when the weather was inclement. We visited all the pubs the village pubs and dined at the Pig & Whistle and the Cavendish arms which were both excellent. The ales from Unsworth Yard and the cheese from Cartmel cheeses and the breakfast at the B&B in the square were all fabulous. We had a lovely walk to Cark and back partially along the Cumbrian coastal path and were awestruck by the beautiful scenery. We had a lovely time staying in the loft in Cartmel and we hope to return. Thank you, Alison, for all your help and advice. Best wishes from, Alison & Ray

Quirky comfortable, well equipped flat in a gem of a town.
Charming and comfortable flat in a very friendly quintessentially English village. Loved being opposite cavendish arms - fantastic food! Friday night pizza night at the Yard was a highlight as was eating at Rogan. Easter at the Lakes felt more like the South of France - just wish we’d bought our swimming trunks to swim in the Lakes! Thank you.

Delightful place.
Stayed in this perfect little flat for 3 nights while we (4) explored the lakes and went to Cartmel races. Everything we needed was available to us and the location for the races couldn’t have been better. We should have stayed longer and if/when we return would happily book with Alison & Alan again who were more than helpful, friendly & kind.

Well located cottage flat in Cartmel
Our family of two adults and two older children had a great time here. It is located in the heart of Cartmel, mere steps from L'Enclume, Cartmel's renowned Michelin eatery, and yards away from the entrance to Cartmel's one-of-a-kind racecourse. The second floor flat is extremely well equipped with everything that you would need for a self catered holiday but we tended to take advantage of local (and further afield) restaurants during our stay. Beds are comfortable and kitchen is well stocked. The flat itself is cosy, as most Lake District cottages are, and it is also very bright and modern. Watch your heads if you are taller than average, as there are some beams that you could come into contact with. However you will quickly get used to maneuvering yourself around the floor plan. Cartmel is part of the Lake District but also is apart from the Lake District so that some hikes that we did involved quite long drives through some scarily narrow roads. The benefit was that we generally avoided the summer crowds that you experience in Windermere, Grasmere etc. On the other hand one could easily spend several days just enjoying Cartmel and Grange over Sands. Alison was a charming host and made sure that everything was perfect for us. She communicated well and was very personable. We would have loved to have met her to thank her for her generous hospitality.

A very homely and well looked-after flat / apartment. It felt welcoming as soon as we arrived!
The flat proved to be a very good base for our holiday; indeed, we enjoyed it so much that we spent a lot of time in it. Alison had obviously put a lot of thought into furnishing it; the facilities were first-rate, the kitchen was well equipped and there was a lovely smallish patio area outside where we could sit and soak up the sunshine (when the sun shone, of course!). All in all, we would recommend it wholeheartedly, and would hopefully return there ourselves at some point.

About the host

Owned by a carpenter and a journalist - so brilliantly maintained, and very close to pubs!!! Alan and Alison grew up on the Fylde Coast, moved toward Manchester owing to work commitments, but have forever loved the Lake District. Travelled the world extensively, including abseiling in Oz's Blue Mountains; road tripping across various bits of the USA; visiting various bits of Asia; cruising the Caribbean... and boating on the Thames. But both still vote the Lakes as their favourite place on the planet!

Why they chose this property

Unique property in an unrivalled position - right in the centre of the village but not overlooked, and with a private courtyard to enjoy peace and quiet in the sunshine if the pubs and paths ever get too much! Since the purchase in 2006, the entire property has been reroofed - an enormous project overseen by Alan, who continues to keep the place in tip top condition, with regular refurbishment and upgrades. Bedroom 1 and ensuite upgraded June 2020, and the kitchen and both bathrooms refurbished in Jan 2017, Bed2 in Dec 2017.
