About this property

Bungalow with spectacular ocean view from lanai and private hot tub

Aloha,
In regard to the Covid-19 restrictions, Hawaii Governor David Ige has announced that people traveling to the state now must be in possession of the results of their COVID-19 tests before departing on the last leg of their trips. If they do not have the test results by that time, they will be forced to quarantine for 10 days. Quarantine must be done in a hotel or motel. It is not allowed to quarantine in a vacation rental, such as ours.

Beautiful and unique getaway in Ka'u, Hawaii, with a view of the southernmost tip of the United States at Southpoint, Hawaii. A wonderful place to stop between Kona and Hilo or the volcano, or to stop and stay longer for a relaxing time away from the crowds and noise. You'll feel refreshed and re-energized by the quiet and serenity. The stargazing at night is incredible and the sunsets magnificent. Sunrises, if you enjoy the early morning are also gorgeous.

The bungalow is ideal for 2 people. There is a very comfortable, king size bed.

Hibiscus Bungalow has been created with a unique eclectic style giving it a retro tropical feeling. Beautiful tropical woods have been used extensively in the details. The kitchen has a 7’ long bar made from a 2” thick lychee wood slab with a live edge, the bathroom contains a 7’ long vanity made of avocado wood, all the windowsills are mango or lychee wood and the 10’ wide lanai facing the ocean is faced with mango wood.
The walk in shower is tiled in spa colored penny tiles and glass block walls with a pebble floor. A large jalousie window looks out into the garden.

The bungalow is a special and romantic place where you can be centrally located to explore the Big Island, and at the same time be away from the crowded resorts, congestion and traffic of the busy city areas. Wake up every morning to the sound of the birds in the Ohi'a trees outside the windows. Sit on the lanai sipping your morning coffee or tea, while watching the ocean and sky lighting up with color
Here you'll see the real Hawaii, where the land is new and the landscape is undeniably dramatic. 10 minutes away are the Kula Kai Caverns, where you can go on guided tours. ½ hour drive gets you to Ka Lae, (Southpoint) where the braver people jump off the cliff and drop 50’ into the ocean below, then climb up a rusty old ladder to do it again perhaps. The famous Green Sand Beach is also down at the end of Southpoint Road. The beach is about a 3 mile hike in, or you can pay one of the locals who charge $15 to drive you to it.
20 minutes away from us are the old and beautifully unchanged little towns of Waiohinu (Shiny Water in Hawaiian) and Na’alehu (meaning the volcanic ashes). This is a gorgeous piece of old Hawaii like you will rarely see. This was a favorite hangout for Mark Twain, who wrote about the area in his Letters from Hawaii, when he was a reporter for
Just a half hour drive away, you’ll be at beautiful Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, where you’ll see the sea turtles basking in the sun. We are 1 hour away from Kona and 1 hour the opposite direction is Volcanoes National Park.

Beautiful sky, gracious hosts
We picked this location for the the sky view and it paid off. Fred and Sandy were great hosts. The hot tub was a bonus after a long day of hiking. Best used as a getaway.

Beauty, remoteness and convenience
This was my second time staying at the bungalow. Otherworldly sunsets and crystal clear starry nights relaxing in the hot tub were the norm for us this time. The place has everything me and my partner needed and the smart natural gardenscaping provides ample privacy. The hosts were friendly and accommodating and everything was as expected from the listing. Also the grocery options are not bad considering the relatively remote location. If you are looking to explore the southern end of Hawaii or just escape I can't think of a better option for this size and price.

The owners of the bungalow lives on site, the bungalow was perfect for 2. We were able to meet Fred the owner and he's a super guy, the owners leave you alone and we never felt like we didn't have complete privacy. We would stay there again.

Fantastic place!
The location is wonderful, quiet, far away from neighbors but very accessible to the supermarkets in Ocean View. It didn't take long to get used to the calm and serenity. The kitchen was very well stocked, and anything that I needed, Sandy and Fred were very prompt to provide it. The view from the deck is fantastic as the ocean is right in front of you. The hot tub is a very nice amenity which we used every day that we could. Fred keeps it clean and filled.

Accommodating relaxation bungalow
The hibiscus bungalow had literally everything. Everything we needed for a relaxing vacation. We came to the island visiting family so after a long day of laughs and adventures we were able to come back to the hibiscus bungalow and wind down perfectly. To top it off the hot tub under a meteoroid shower was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. They had everything from, band aids, to extra towels, to ice trays, to even maps and binoculars! The sun rises are unexplainable. Best way to summarize our stay was magical.

Great Bungalow for Two
We enjoyed our stay at the Hibiscus Bungalow very much. Our hosts were available but never hovering. They had lots of information & shared all the beach chairs/coolers/towels too. This place is quiet on a lava flow with coffee & pizza places nearby….we didn’t eat Thai but there were grocery stores & even the Dragon laundry place with drop off services. We were in the middle of Kona & Volcano and very close to the best black sand beach & a yummy bakery. The description was as promised - the garden was lovely & we enjoyed the hot tub under the stars.

Beautiful bungalow off the beaten track
We loved our stay at the Hibiscus Bungalow. Pulling up to the property, you can see that so much attention has been paid to preservation of the natural landscape. The bungalow is located on one half of the property, and the owners live about 200 feet away. It was nice to have the owners nearby, as they were very attentive and ready to help if needed. Stepping into the bungalow, we were delighted by how open and airy it was, it almost had treehouse vibes. Windows everywhere and double sliding glass doors leading out to the lanai. The kitchen is well appointed, with the consumables and kitchen tools necessary for a week-long stay. There is a live-edge breakfast bar to sit at. The bathroom has ample counter space, and a beautiful walk-in shower with a stone floor and tile walls. The bed is extremely comfortable, and the sitting area inside the bungalow has a nice sofa as well. Sitting in the comfy wicker chairs on the lanai, you can drink locally grown Ka’u coffee with a sweeping view of the ocean. There is a propane grill outside the bungalow for guest use. The hot tub is secluded and well-kept. At night, the stars are stunning, and one of our favorite experiences on the property was soaking in the hot tub and stargazing after a long day. The location, in Oceanview, is convenient for travel to Southpoint (Papakōlea green sand beach) and the Punalu’u black sand beach. Other locations we enjoyed nearby were the Punalu’u Bakery, Oceanview Pizzaria, and Oceanview market. The owners were incredibly helpful and kind. They provided us with body boards, snorkels, fins, and a cooler for beach excursions, and they offered suggestions for places to visit that only locals would know about. We easily made day trips to Kona, Hilo, and the north end of the Island. The only downside is that we found ourselves driving home after dark some nights. We were also perfectly happy spending a day in Oceanview, enjoying the bungalow and the property. Overall, we really enjoyed staying at this property! If we were travelling to the Big Island again, we would definitely book the Hibiscus Bungalow for a relaxing vacation away from home.

magical honeymoon paradise
We spent our honeymoon at Fred and Sandy’s beautiful bungalow- it’s clear from every detail of the space that it was built and crafted with love. We had an amazing stay- coffee on the lanai each morning and watching the stars from the hottub each night was so memorable. The property has so many beautiful flowers and plants- not to mention the delicious lilikoi! It’s a paradise growing from lava rock. We loved getting to know Fred and Sandy, who were so kind and accommodating. We shared some stories and laughs- they gave us great advice on beaches and provided everything we needed for snorkeling and lounging on the beach. Our only mistake was not staying longer!

Peaceful Paradise
If you’re looking for a place that provides peace and quiet as well as fabulous views of the ocean, sunrises, sunsets and stars (even from the hot tub), Hibiscus Bungalow is the place for you. The small bungalow will have everything you need ...a super comfy bed, a fully stocked kitchen, outdoor gas grill and hot tub. The best part was spending mornings on the lanai having coffee and listening to the birds calling out to each other. The perfect place to read, meditate or plan out the day OR relax with a glass of wine and a book to relax at the end of the day. Beautiful flowers and plantings amongst the lava added to the beauty of this island. Sandy and Fred were super hosts - friendly and helpful but not intrusive. The property is approximately ten minutes from town where there are two grocery stores and gas stations, an awesome coffee Grindz with great bakery items and a pizza place. Most tourist activities are 20 minutes to one hour away. The great part about this property is the peace and quiet if you’re looking to escape from your daily noise overload and just want to wind down. Thank you so very much Sandy and Fred for opening your home to me!

Perfect place for a couple
My husband and I spent two nights in this beautiful little gem of a place. The most comfortable bed we've ever stayed in outside our home. The place was equipped with all the right stuff, so we were able to cook our meals and eat on the lanai, looking out on the expansive view. And the hot tub under the stars was perfect too. We will definitely be back!

Gem of a property!!
If you are looking for a peaceful, beautiful, perfect place to stay that gives you easy access to both sides of the island, look no further. Hibiscus Cottage is the place. This place is as far different (in every positive way possible) from a hotel stay as you can get. Incredibly scenic and private bungalow that is absolutely perfect for two adults. Sandra and Fred are the consummate hosts/owners and they only increase the value and pleasantness of your stay. This is a place DEFINITELY worth looking into. Enjoy

About the host

Hosted by Sandra Mayville

Host profile image
We bought our land here in 2011 and built a small house to live in and then the bungalow, for guests. We both love Hawaii and plan on being permanent residents here. We love plants and trees and have done lots of landscaping. We have planted fruit trees and vines, asparagus and arugula, koa trees, Monterey pines, palms of different kinds, orchids, bromeliads, cactus, roses and lots of hibiscus. Hibiscus is my favorite flower, and we live on Hibiscus Drive. Naturally, we had to name our place Hibiscus Bungalows. Besides loving Hawaii, we love to travel. So far, Asia and Europe, and looking forward to doing more exploring.

Why they chose this property

The setting here is so unique. We are located on the southwest flank of Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano. Don't worry, it isn't spewing anywhere around us at this time. The lava flow we live on is hundreds of years old. We have amazing dramatic lava rocks. They are like sculptures. The layered lava balls are fascinating chunks of geological history. This link will take you to a paper that will tell you all about it.
http://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/FACULTY/ROWLAND/pdfs/Pohue_Bay_flow.pdf
Besides the layered lava balls, there is the sunrise, the sunset, the views and the beautiful fragrance of the passion flowers and plumeria.

What makes this property unique

Custom bathroom with tiled walk-in shower, seat, niches and glass block walls. Views of ocean and gardens from inside the shower, through jalousie windows. The vanity is a 7' long piece of avocado wood with a natural edge, from the Big Island. You'll feel like you're showering at an exclusive spa.

There is a custom bar made out of local lychee wood, where you can relax and enjoy the view.

On the lanai, where you see the gorgeous view of the coast starting at Southpoint, the exterior wall facing the ocean is faced with mango wood.

All of the window sills inside are either mango or lychee wood.

The décor is eclectic, combining tropical décor, stained glass wall sconces, and ceiling fans inside and out.
