About this property

WATER & Utilities Now Restored! Walk to Downtown & Many Neighborhood Amenities!

Water and all util/internet have now been restored to this location after Helene! (Drinking/consumption water remains under boil water as a safety precaution until fully tested and cleared).

This property is generally a 30 DAY MINIMUM stay per zoning, however, at times I will consider an occasional shorter stay and just block out the calendar for the remainder (only do per 30 day period allowed). Inquire for specific rates/info on any shorter requests.

Here is a description:
This 2 BR/1BA stand alone house sits on a quiet 1/2 acre lot in the Chestnut Hills historic area. It was originally built in the 1950's as a caretaker cottage for the 6 unit Victorian apartment house in front. It can be accessed from the main driveway to the property or directly from the private alleyway behind (shared with 4 homes - including Servanthood House meditation center - very quiet and peaceful neighbors). Since this home is free-standing, there are no other tenants above or below you - making it a quiet space, in a serene spot with large trees.

This is truly an awesome location for enjoying all that Asheville offers! The neighborhood is one of historic homes, mostly built around 1920s or earlier, with several award winning bed-and-breakfasts within a block radius. You can walk to downtown from here (about 1/2 mile away) or get an easy Uber ride. There are also several wonderful restaurants right here in the neighborhood and a full selection of grocery stores within a couple of short blocks ("Greenlife"/Whole Foods, Trader'Joe's and Harris Teeter about 1-1/2 block). Asheville YOGA Center is 2 short blocks away so it's a great place to stay for their retreats! With all that is so close-by, you don't even need your car in this location.

The home is fully furnished and comfortably decorated. Hardwood floors make for charming space and easy care. Each bedroom has a queen bed, with bed linens included. Bath has been updated with vanity and storage. Kitchen is very large with maple cabinets and full appliances (stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, over-the-range microwave, disposal), and all basic dishes, utensils, pots, pans are included - as well as coffee maker, toaster, crock pot, hand mixer, blender...

The house has Central AC (not all rentals in the area have central AC due to age of homes).

Comfortable living room has a sleeper sofa and other furnishings, plus 40" tv with streaming stick (stream your own accts). There is one dedicated parking space in front of house for convenience, another space in back of house (adjacent to alley), and plenty of on-street parking in front of main house. Coin washer and dryer on premises in basement of apartment building (about 100 feet away - it's an old basement but does provide the on-site laundry option).

This is NOT set up as luxury accommodations. but as comfortable, quaint space that will make you feel like a local and live the true Asheville vibe! We do request that you respect the generally quiet atmosphere of the location and surroundings - no large or loud parties, please. No Smoking.

Some quick location info:
-Near tons of restaurants, galleries, shops/bookstore, breweries (and some fantastic handmade chocolate shops)
-Full selection of grocery within walking distance (Trader Joe's .1 mile, Greenlife/Whole Foods .2 m, Harris Teeter 500 feet!) with hot bars, salad bars, and ready made foods.
- US Cellular Center - special events (.9 mile).
- There are several other outstanding music venues including the Orange Peel (1 mile)
- The Asheville Yoga Center (1/10 mile walk from the back alley!)
- The Salt Cave & Center for Massage school (9/10 mile - Great student massages $30!)
- YMCA (1/2 mile)
- 2 Meditation Centers right out the back alley on East Chestnut Street.
- UNCA less than 2 miles away
- Grove Park Inn Resort about 1-1/2 miles away
- Biltmore House entrance gate about 3 miles away

Quaint Cottage with all the comforts of home!
We loved staying at this quaint little cottage! It's an adorable little 2 br/1ba with all the comforts of home. If your business is downtown, you don't need a car, you can walk. The access to grocery stores (Healthy ones TJ's and Harris Teeter) is quite walk able and convenient if you don't want to dine out at all the amazing establishments Asheville has to offer. We had comfortable nights rest, coffee at the breakfast nook and evenings relaxing in the garden after a long work day! We will return, for sure :) We LOVE it here :)

Nice Place Quiet neighborhood
Great little place. Bed was nice. Proximity is close to downtown, but consider a 1+ mile walk in winter. We had that cold snap come through. I did more driving and parking than I wanted. Trader Joe’s is a block away. Quiet community.

Restful yet part of downtown
Sherri's Time A Broad was wonderfull. Every thing I could need was there. I could walk to wonderful little cafes or restaurants. 3 grocery stores to walk to. Close to many venues. Yet a hidden away place to relax and rejuvenate. The decor was lovely. Sherri was very attentive and responded quickly to any of my concerns. The house is clean and kept up. Everything works well. And she will stay there herself!

A Place of Peace and Comfort
We stayed at a B&B in Asheville several years ago and really enjoyed the neighborhood and access to just about everything you could want!!To our surprise this small but lovely and well maintained house was but a block away from that B&B!! The owner was so easy to work with and fortunately --like us--a lover of Labradors--and we were able to bring our Lab with us!! Every detail of the property description was accurate and the Owner provided lots of info--both by email and by various brochures and books that were in the house--and we appreciated the comfortable bed--and kitchen!! Asheville is such an interesting town--and this property in perfectly located to take advantage of eating, shopping and exploring both the indoors--shops and restaurants--and the outdoors--beautiful state parks and the Blue Ridge Parkway!! Thank You for sharing your house with us---as Arnold said in the Terminator--We'll be back!!!! John and Lynn

Great location near Asheville Yoga Center and Downtown
We were in Asheville for a weekend yoga workshop at Asheville Yoga Center and this was a perfect location. We were a couple minutes away by foot and there is a juice bar and cafe on the way. Trader Joes and Harris Teeter are also nearby. The house was clean, kitchen well equipped for cooking, living room big enough to relax, and beds and bath in ghee at condition. About a 10-15 minute walk downtown. Would stay here again!

Quiet location close to downtown
The walk to downtown was relatively close, but there were some brutal hills. Uber rides, however, were only about $5. Cute house. Quiet neighborhood. Great place to stay with friends!

Perfect location and just right for our needs.
The house was perfect for what we needed. We loved that grocery stores was within walking distance as well as downtown Asheville. The neighborhood was quiet and peaceful. Other attractions (Biltmore, rafting) and restaurants were not far away. We enjoyed walking through the neighborhood and driving to nearby Montford neighborhood to look at the homes. The house was clean, beds were comfortable and the house was well equipped for our needs. We would stay again.

Clean, perfect location to downtown, quiet and cute
We loved staying at Sherri's place last week. Two couples and a dog looking to retreat to Asheville to catch our breath, and this space helped support that notion. It was close enough to downtown so we could walk everywhere and not have to pay for parking, and a stone's throw from several grocery markets to cook our own food. It was quiet enough to feel like a retreat and was exactly what we needed. Thank you Sherri! We will be back again!

Great place with walkablity to downtown and shopping
We enjoyed our stay at the comfortable home. Trader Joes and a grocery store are only a few blocks away. Downtown is a short walk and with parking issues downtown it was a great asset. The beds could be updated but the sheets and linens are very nice. I would recommend this place to anyone!

Perfect for an Asheville getaway
My husband and I spent a long weekend in Asheville with our two dogs, and this place was great! We were able to walk to downtown Asheville for dinner and drinks, and could be to a hiking trail/ Blue Ridge Mountains in a short 15 minute drive. The house was nice, and had everything we needed. Plus, plenty of grocery stores close by to pick up anything we forgot. The only thing I would point out is the yard is not fenced. We were fine taking our dogs out on their leashes but wanted to add this to my review for others. I had specifically asked this question before booking and didn't get a response. However, all other questions were answered and we didn't having any issues with renting or the house. I hope to use this place again soon!

Perfect Christmas Get A Way
I had a fabulous visit in this beautifully decorated close to downtown location . We could walk to both restaurants and grocery shopping within minutes. It is a hidden away cottage in a lovely and quiet neighborhood in Asheville. Everything you need was provided for an enjoyable and comfortable time in this rental. Highly recommend this lovely home to anyone desiring a peaceful get- a- way in Asheville. I look forward to a return visit ! Many thanks to my wonderful hostess .

Cute house in a quiet area, but close enough to walk downtown!
I stayed for vacation recently with my boyfriend. We both enjoyed staying in this house- it felt like a home away from home! It provides everything you need, is in a quiet area, and close to downtown. Our average walk downtown was about 3/4 of a mile. There are so many great restaurants in downtown Asheville to try and lots of local beer to drink. The location of the house made it so easy to get to all of the places we wanted to try! We also enjoyed having Greenlife grocery so close for snacks and coffee.

Nice house really close to town
We had a great time when we stayed here for two weeks this Feb. with our dog. The house is in a really interesting neighborhood that is fun to walk around. Some nice restaurants, Trader Joes and Harris Teeter are all a couple of blocks away. It is within walking distance of downtown which is really handy since parking in Asheville is a bear. We found this house to be a great base from which to explore one of our favorite cities.

Awesome house and location!
This was the perfect house for me. I was visiting my son in Asheville but wanted to be able to do my own thing. I loved the walking distance yoga, groceries, restaurants, coffee shop, everything. The house was adorable and very comfortable. Would rent again for sure!

Loved the location and this cute little house!
Stayed over Thanksgiving with husband, son and our two small dogs. We have stayed in numerous VRBO locations in Asheville, with and without our dogs. "Stay A Broad" combined downtown convenience with enough distance from downtown to have peace and quiet when we wanted it. The neighborhood is convenient to grocery (Harris Teeter and Trader Joe's in walking distance) and great for walking the dogs around the block with lots of well kept older homes! The kitchen was adequately equipped for our full-on Thanksgiving prep. Beds comfortable! Parking easy! Hope to stay here again!

Private Gem
Just spent a week end of relaxing in the comfort of this lovely little getaway in the heart of Asheville. The home is full of light, charmingly decorated, has every convenience and comfort, and is located in a peaceful setting. You can walk to cafes, pubs, restaurants, even downtown Asheville. The neighborhood is great to run in or stroll around. If you want to cook or bake, the kitchen is fully equipped and there are three grocery stores nearby. Katie, the realtor, was very attentive, making sure I had everything I needed. I just can't wait to make my next reservation!

About the host

Hosted by Sherri

Host profile image
I am an Asheville native and have renovated and restored property in North Asheville for about 25 years. Most of my property is traditional long term rental apartments, but I have set this property up as a vacation rental, because much of my time is away now. Having this as a vacation rental allows me to have a little place to come home to, while also providing a reasonably affordable spot for others to enjoy very close in to downtown.

Why they chose this property

I bought this property about 20 years ago, when the area and street were very run down. It has taken a lot of blood, sweat, tears, love (and money!) over the years, but I have restored and improved the entire apartment house and this "caretaker house". At one time, my dear aunt lived here in the little house, then my mother, so there are some special memories for me here. I enjoy the house myself when I am in town and I'm excited to now offer it as a vacation rental and help guests experience a slice of Asheville life. The location is PRIME for enjoying the city as well as the surrounding mountains.

What makes this property unique

With this property being tucked away on a quiet lot away from the street, it offers a serene retreat while still being so close to everything. Biltmore House entrance is about 3 miles away, downtown about 1/2 mile, Grove Park Inn is about 1-1/2 away - and there are SO many wonderful restaurants and shops that are easily walkable from here. Be sure to check out the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway for world class scenic vistas -- a great picnic drive and a fantastic way to beat the heat in the summer months (it will be 10-15 degrees cooler at places like Craggy Gardens-- a short and beautiful drive away).

For TRAVEL NURSES or healthcare professionals, Mission Hospital main campuses are about 2 miles away.

If you're here for some soulful restoration, Asheville Yoga Center is just over a block away. Just go around to the side steps and out the alleyway toward Liberty street (right at bottom of stairs), then left on Liberty. You'll run in to Yoga Center just down the street. One of my new favorite coffee shops just opened up right next door to them - Liberty House Cafe -- it's adorable and they have great coffee, plus a few other yummy treats. There are also meditation centers on East Chestnut (the next street behind the house).

Look up the Salt Cave downtown for additional soulful pampering - and enjoy a massage at one of the many facilities nearby (some right behind the house on Chestnut), or at one of the massage schools downtown for great student massages at incredible rates (when school is in session).
