A lovely property

Carol's place is really great and I'd gladly recommend it. We stayed over Christmas, which can be chilly at night, and the house is very warm and comfortable and is well equipped. It is nicely decorated, has a great view over the canals and is well located close to the beach and Abbot Kinney. All in all, we'd stay here again.

Beautiful Cottage in the perfect location

This really was a perfect place. It was quiet, while being ridiculously close to the beach and all that happens in Venice Beach. We enjoyed all the sights in LA but were able to come back to this little piece of heaven and rest. Very clean, must be on of the few rentals right on the canals. Lovely to watch life go by. Could not recommend it more.

Great cottage, perfect location!

Our family of 4 had a great time staying at this cottage. It's very comfortable and clean, bright and sunny during the day, and quiet at night. The beach is just a couple blocks away, and there are lots of good places to eat within walking distance. Our daughters also had a really fun time paddling the boat through the canals! Carol, the owner, is super friendly and very responsive. We hope to come back!

The pictures don't do it justice

Carol's house is nicely appointed, beautifully located, and comfortable. It was a pleasure to sit on the sofa with a drink, as a cool breeze wafted through the house. Nearby, there were many fine places to eat. We ate at James Beach, two blocks away. There, my wife's celebrity radar picked up Jimmy Smits eating two tables away. Made her trip.

Beautiful little house in a fantastic location and a perfect small home away from home

Staying in LA in mid summer with temperatures hovering around 108 degrees, it was just brilliant to be able to return to Carol's immaculate Venice little house to relax and recover. The cottage is every bit as lovely as the pictures suggest, and Carol has used excellent taste and real class in choosing the way it is decorated and fitted out. Sitting on the deck watching Venice life go by is a past-time I can deal with any time! For a short LA stay I can think of nowhere better and I am sure we will be back if it is available next time we are in town. Thank you Carol.

Family Fun on Venice Canals

We had a wonderful stay in this great Venice cottage in December 2015. Everything was as described with comfortable beds, updated kitchen and bathrooms, and a great parking spot. We loved walking around the canals and checking out the Christmas lights. The canal neighborhood is so cute. The house was an easy jumping off point to Venice (walking distance to the beach and great restaurants) as well as a reasonable bike ride to Santa Monica and an easy drive to all of the touristy LA spots. There was plenty of space in the house for a family of five to sleep and hang out. Carol was very easy to work with. Definitely recommend!

An amazing find

We booked this cottage originally so that we could be near the beach for a weekend. We had no idea this canal district existed and when we saw the cottage and the surrounding waterfront neighborhood, we decided to spend our time relaxing there instead of the beach. The evenings on the canal are truly beautiful and a neighbor a few doors down had a live band playing for all the neighborhood to enjoy. The quiet hours are strictly enforced, which was appreciated when it came time to wind down. The cottage has PLENTY of room and amenities and the skylights were wonderful for natural lighting. We had such an amazing time that we've vowed to book this cottage again for our next trip!

Perfect Venice Canal Cottage

We loved our stay here in the "big" house! A great location within walking distance to so many fun things--Abbot Kinney, the beach, restaurants etc. and a relaxing, quiet retreat. We loved cooking meals made from the Farmer's Market finds two nights and also enjoyed having a few friends over for dinner. The bedroom is comfy and quiet and relaxing. The home is super clean! If you have a larger group, I would look into renting both houses so the entire back patio area is yours and then you have an extra bedroom! My only, minor, complaint is that the wifi is almost non-existent. If this were upgraded, I don't think I would ever leave! As it was, it was a good excuse to have a REAL vacation!

Thyme L., Always a pleasure hosting people for special occasions!

Horrible host, mean spirited, rude and vulgar.

A beautiful location will never trump a horrible and unprepared host. Upon arrival, stains in carpet, a broken tile in kitchen, unsealed bathtub begin to describe our experience. The host was confrontational and rude from the first dialogue and email. Guest services is not her strength and I should know having been in this business five years. Read my reviews and be your own judge. Good luck Carol.

Feeling Lucky! Amazing Venice Canal Experience

I inquired about Carol's studio bungalow on the Venice canals. Unfortunately I missed the boat and somebody reserved before I could get the dates that I needed. Carol shared with me that she had a new house coming on the market and that our timing might be right. I was wise to trust the great reviews that I read because everything worked out perfectly. My family and I feel fortunate to have been the inaugural visitors to Carol's one bedroom bungalow on the Venice canals, it is exquisite in every way! We rowed the boats and rode the bikes and soaked it all in! A close walk or bike ride to almost anywhere you want to be. It was a perfect for me, my wife and teenage daughter and son. Thank you Carol for delivering a very special experience for our family!

Everything as expected - a terrific place!

The property was perfectly clean with virtually everything provided, from beach towels and chairs to silverware, dishes, cooking utensils, etc. If you are not familiar with this area you should know once you park your car you don't need to use it again until you leave! Everything is in walking distance -- the beach, more restaurants than you'll be able to sample, and the fascinating and unique Venice panorama. The house is wonderfully light and airy (even more so than the pictures) with abundant windows and several skylights -- in fact, that is probably what we felt to be its best feature. The bed in the bedroom was very comfortable and gave good support. We have stayed with Carol Hurwitz before and know that she is very responsive to customer's needs, always fixing any small problems that arise -- however, this stay everything was perfect and we had no need to contact her or her people. We love the place and intend to come back every summer!

Beachy Beauty Beyond expectations!

This property is far more beautiful than the pics show. It is simply a delight of fresh, beachy, relaxing comfort. We immersed ourselves in the stunning views from the deck...a perfect place to enjoy coffe, reading & photography. Bird life abounds in the canals: nesting ducks, great blue herons, snowy egrets, all fishing at eye level. Walking the canals is complete entertainment for anyone with an eye for eclectic architecture. Neighbors are all welcoming and friendly. We loved touring the neighborhood with the canoe provided. What a kick! The Venice boardwalk was incredible...miles of people-watching by bike or foot. The beach itself was wonderful...uncrowded mid-week & water warm enough for just a shorty wetsuit. Waves perfect for boogie boarding...a real dream coming from Northern California cold waters. We simply loved this place & will return often. The only caution we could provide is that it is not set up for media use: only one small tv in living room, no DVD player until we requested one, cable not working & internet slow as mud when on occasion it worked. Having said that, there is so much to do outdoors & just sitting on the deck was such a pleasure that we really didn't miss it much. Bring a book and take a break from the real world. We can't say enough about how great it was!

So lovely

Such a lovely place to stay. We were a group of 4 women, a friend of mine and my two college age daughters. I have got to say the sitting on the back deck was so relaxing and so beautiful. We had a lot of fun using the row boats. Those houses on the canals are amazing. One more original and spectacular than the next. The cottage itself was adorable. Very well decorated to suit the home, sort of Cape Cod meets Ikea. It was so clean. All the sleeping spaces were very comfy. The bedding was good quality. I worried a bit being so close to Venice Beach from some of the reviews about the area! No worries. It was very safe and far enough from the Boardwalk that you were away from the riff-raff. Actually the restaurants that are a close walking distance from the cottage are in Marina Del Rey. We chose to walk several nights and felt very safe. There are many eateries to choose from and enjoyed them, especially the ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery for dessert! I highly recommend this place. As other reviewers have recently stated the wifi was poor. I had to use my data...and so did my daughters...yikes! I hope I don't go over this month. Also a few board games would have been a nice touch, However I still give this place a five star. I would stay again if I had the chance!

Really nice stay

This is a great base for a visit to LA/Venice. There is so much to do, literally on your doorstep, and the house is well appointed and comfortable. I'd also recommend Carol as a host.

Tolles Strandhaus in perfekter Lage

Serene escape adjacent to the madness that is Venice Beach

Our family (2 adults and 2 teenagers) had 6 nights in the canal home and it was a fantastic accommodation to relax and refresh just meters away from the action. Sitting on the deck was a daily please as was taking to the canals in the row boat. The canals is a surprising oasis and we were lucky to be there for the July 4th holiday where the local community get together and celebrate. There was lots of activity with the highlight being a Rubber Duck Race done the canal opposite the property. Just a tip - colour your duck a differently so you know it's yours. The cottage was very clean, with a relaxing seaside vibe. It has everything you need including a full kitchen, handy when you are over takeaway or going out. We also loved the bikes and rode the boardwalk to Santa Monica Pier. Thanks for having us, hopefully we come past again one day! Stuart Melbourne, Australia

Perfect

I cannot say a single negative thing about the entire experience. The home was indeed beautiful (wife fell in love with it instantly) and the deck view was a highlight. You'll have tourists walking right past the deck during the day (the Venice canal area is an attraction), but that wasn't a problem at all. It was great that the Venice Beach area was so close (<10 min walk), but in this home you felt miles away. We used the bikes to travel to Santa Monica (easy ride up the boardwalk), Marina Del Rey, Abbott Kinney Blvd and around Venice to explore. We typically walked to dinner (check out James' Beach). We would stay here again, highly recommend!

Beautiful Cottage on the Venice Canals

My husband and our college age daughter enjoyed a relaxing four nights at Carol's beautiful cottage. Exploring the canals in the canoe and enjoying cocktails or coffee on the deck were highlights! The house is walking distance to Venice Beach, Abbott Kinney, and Main St. Santa Monica, as well as the perfect home base for exploring Los Angeles. The cottage has everything you could possibly need!

Beautiful Canal Bungalow

Our family of 3 really enjoyed our stay at this Venice Canal Bungalow. The home is well equipped with everything we needed, and the owner was very responsive to any questions we had. If you are looking to stay in the Venice Beach area, the location of the cottage is pretty ideal, with the beach mere minutes away on foot, and most everything you need is within cycling or walking distance. We spent most of our days out and about, but we looked forward to coming back in the late afternoons to relax on the deck, have a drink, and make dinner. Our stay was very comfortable and very relaxing.

About the host

Hosted by Jake Hurwitz

Host profile image
I have lived in the Venice area for over 20 years and have owned this property since 2006, when I totally renovated it and brought it back to it's Cape Cod architectural origins. I am a real estate agent and have enjoyed making this place as pretty as it can possibly be. I love that this place is magical- I've been told the charm factor is off the charts. If that's what you are looking for- look no further.

Why they chose this property

When this property came on the market in 2006 I realized these canal homes were precious and too cute to pass up. Even though this place needed a thorough remodel when we bought it, I saw the potential. This was one of the original bungalows built back in the 1920's when the Venice Canals were first developed by Abbott Kinney. By 2006 it had been changed over the years from it's original beach bungalow roots. It had taken on an unfortunate conglomeration of styles. Needless to say, I took it back to it's beachy Cape Cod origins and have never looked back. It fits so nicely into the Venice vibe. People love it!

What makes this property unique

Being right on the canal is about as rare as it gets in LA. Even locals don't all know that the Venice Canals exist. The boats at this property give you a chance to see Venice like you've never seen it before, from a canoe! You are only a block and a half from the beach, yet surrounded by multi-million dollar estates as well as cute beach bungalows cottages like this one. Another unique advantage of this property is it's proximity to it's little sister cottage next door which sleeps 4. Several families could vacation together for a lot less than the cost of several hotel suites. If you rent out both cottages you can sleep a total of 10 and have two kitchens, 2 bathrooms, laundry facilities, 5 bikes and 2 boats. All for under $600/night. It would be a great place for two families or several couples. But this is not the place for party animals- it's a quiet neighborhood so party animals, please keep looking, this is not the place for you.
