About this property

Huge Beautiful 2-Story Apartment in a Great Neighborhood.

Covid19 Note: This apartment is professionally cleaned and disinfected prior to each new guest check-in.

Just coming back onto the short-term rental market after a one and half year hiatus. I sold the building about a year and half ago and bought a new place a few blocks away. I have now reopened this wonderful B&B and am again taking reservations. I am still the host and property manager, and look forward to welcoming you here.

We've also recently installed a large solar array on the roof, which provides more than enough electricity for the entire building. It uses "net metering", which ensures a totally seamless electrical supply for the property at all times, regardless of how much energy our array is producing.

This very large two story apartment is truly unique. It occupies two floors, with three bedrooms and one bathroom on the second floor and a kitchen, dining room, bathroom and great room on the first floor. The great room is two stories high with an exposed wraparound staircase. The building still retains it's original hardwood maple floors, with the exception of one of the bedrooms, which is carpeted. Both floors have private 4-season porches on the front of the building. The back door leads out onto a beautiful and rather large split level cedar deck. Some off-street parking is available at the rear of the building as well.

There is one master bedroom with a king size bed, cable TV and it's own private 4-season porch. The other two bedrooms are substantially smaller and feature queen size beds.

Both bathrooms have recently been redone and feature some beautiful custom stonework and cabinetry. The kitchen received granite countertops around the same time, and features a full size refrigerator/freezer, gas range, microwave, coffee machine and toaster. It is also equipped with cookware, dishes and utensils. The apartment has it's own laundry machines, which are located off the kitchen. The dining room is immediately adjacent to the kitchen and has a private 4-season porch attached.

The great room is part of what makes this rental so unique. It has a 20 foot ceiling with an open staircase that wraps up to the second floor. It's the living room of the apartment and features comfortable seating with a large flat screen television. It also has a queen size hide-a-bed.

The apartment is equipped with free wireless high speed internet access, cable television and a dedicated forced air heating and air conditioning system with it's own thermostat that the guest has control over. (Note: this forced air system is exclusive to this B&B and is not shared with the other unit in the building.)

This rental occupies both floors of the South half of the building, and was originally two apartments, which have been converted into one extra large single unit. Guests have three private doors to the apartment: First and second floor front doors, which lead into a common stairwell shared with the other unit in the building, and a back door, which leads out onto the cedar deck.

Thanks and Giving

The photos of this beautiful 2 story apartment were accurate and gave us the information we needed to choose this property to host a family Thanksgiving dinner. We had 3 generations, from 70 to 9 years old, on Thanksgiving day (10 people). The natural light during the day and the indoor lighting at night were beautiful. Timely, accommodating and concise communication with the host help make planning and our stay much easier. We appreciated all the thought put into the extras such as blankets and extra pillows, bedside tables with reading lamps and easy to find restock items (paper towels, etc). With a great room, connected dining room/kitchen area, 3 bedrooms and 2 porch areas, we had plenty of room to gather, close a door and take an after dinner nap, play a game or snuggle up on a loveseat for a quiet conversation. 5 star rating from the whole family. My husband and I enjoyed the quiet afterglow on Friday before heading home. We'll be back.

Nicely restored home

We had a wonderful stay at this home in the Whittier neighborhood. Great location just to the south of downtown Minneapolis. We walked to Lake of the Isles; ran along the Midtown greenway; meandered through a nearby Farmer's Market; and ate meals at restaurants in the neighborhood. Very nice place to stay. The host was helpful, flexible, and friendly.

Clean and spacious. Close to downtown Minneapolis. Apartment had everything we needed. I would of preferred a contactless check in/out. First time an owner has been there in person.

Nice duplex, nice neighborhood

The property was very clean and quiet. It is very close to many restaurants on Nicollet Av. (Eat Street) which is a walkable distance. The only issue we had was with the kitchen. There is no dishwasher. It is small and may be difficult to cook if for more than a couple people. We didn't eat in much, so it was OK for us.

Terrific all around

Wonderful property in good residential location close to some great restaurants. Mike was very helpful and was great with communication. The house itself has a really cool vibe. Tons of space. Interesting art. Comfortable beds and furniture. Clean. Everything worked. Kitchen had all we needed and there were plenty of linens and other items on hand like a hair dryer, etc. Fun time for girls weekend in Minneapolis! This particular house made it super special. Thanks Mike!!

Spacious yet Private

This property is absolutely wonderful. It’s a great location for a weekend in Minneapolis with friends. Close to many attractions and fun restaurants. The downstairs space is open and wonderful for gathering for movies or games, while the rooms allow you wonderful privacy while still being very bright and open. If you love craftsman style wood work you’ll love this place! Along with a lovely host, will absolutely be booking here again.

Weekend getaway

My wife and I, along with our 3 small kids happily stayed at Mike's place. He explained during the check in walk through that it was originally a quadplex that was converted into a duplex. There's a TON of room here. I've owned and stayed in places that were built in this era and I assure you, I've never seen a place as clean as this- it was immaculate! No cobwebs or dust bunnies to be had. There are a few wonderful little reading areas and a grand living room where the whole family and then some could watch a movie together. The place comes with two parking spots out back that I preferred over the street parking. Check out was a reasonable enough- no starting the laundry before you go...or emptying all the garbage and drag it to the curb... We didn't need anything from Mike, but he makes himself available 24/7. I wouldn't hesitate to return here.

A short stay in Minneapolis

We were happy with our stay from the minute we arrived. Our host was there to meet us and walked us through everything we needed to know. The beds were comfortable and we had plenty of towels. It was an easy walk to many nice restaurants and we went for a nice walk to the lakes areas which was absolutely beautiful. We would stay here again

Fantastic experience!

The property was as described online. Perfectly located in relation to everything we needed and wanted to do. The former owner, now property manager, Mike was GREAT! He is invested in the quality of the experience in this property. He was amazingly responsive. He provided detailed instructions, expectations, and recommendations. He even provided resources for the soap he provided that I liked. He was a wealth of knowledge regarding the area and nearby experiences. Lastly, he was kind, flexible and accommodating. We could not have asked for a better experience!

Great rental in MLPS

We had a great time staying at Mike's VRBO, its location is only a few blocks off of Nicollet (Eat Street) and an easy walk to great food. The place is bigger then the pictures show, gave us tons of space for spreading out and feeling comfortable. The beds were comfortable and the neighborhood quiet. I would highly recommend staying with Mike, who was awesome to work with during our stay!

Not What It Used To Be

I've stayed here 20 months in total (separate stays starting July 2020). You can see my previous review. Unfortunately, both the house and location have deteriorated. The neighborhood is no longer safe. There are robberies and shootings. This property had an attempted break-in while I was staying here. Thankfully the next-door tenants handled it. I would not be walking outside at night if I were you. When I first moved here almost 2 years ago it wasn't like this. Do not come here during any sort of colder weather unless you like mice. This property has a severe mouse problem. Unfortunately, the host refused to get an exterminator because he didn’t think it would help. I personally killed over 25 mice using traps…but there remained more upon checkout. The host tends to work in his basement workshop during the day. Since this rental is right above his workshop, you can hear sawing and pounding. If he was improving this property, that would be understandable. But he was working on private projects even though this property needs to be better taken care of. Keep in mind that this house is on a direct road that connects to Abbott Northwestern Hospital. So, there are ambulances (sirens on) passing by day and night. I still like the very high ceiling though.

About the host

Hosted by Mike Olson

Host profile image
I grew up in Northeast Minneapolis and moved to South Minneapolis when I attended the University of Minnesota. I've lived in this area ever since. It suites me. I'm what you might call an artistic type. I actually made the door in this photo. I'm a Classically trained composer and have strong ties to the arts community here. I've made a living as a composer and audio producer for over 30 years. I'm also rather "outdoorsy". I am intimately familiar with the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota and have biked hundreds of miles of trails in the state. I love exploring and am always looking for new bike trails and restaurants. I also love to cook.

Why they chose this property

I chose to live in this part of town because it just feels right to me. It's old. It has character. The boulevard trees are large and mature. Great restaurants. Beautiful old parks. The lakes. The bike trails. A vibrant arts scene. Many small independent businesses. Close to everything. The building is original to the site and is over 100 years old. I like that it's large. It was originally constructed as a 5-plex and has been many things over the past century, including a rooming house. It was converted to a duplex right before I purchased it, at which time it received all new wiring, plumbing and heating/air conditioning. This neighborhood has many old large houses and mansions. Most of them had been all broken up into multiple units, but as the area gentrified, these stately old homes have gradually been bought-up and converted back to single occupancy residences. I was fortunate to have gotten in near the beginning of the gentrification upswing.

I sold the building to it's current owner in the Fall of 2019, and moved to my new home, which is located about eight blocks away. So, I'm still in the neighborhood and close by if there is anything your require.

What makes this property unique

Close to Downtown. Close to Uptown. Close to the Lakes. It hits the sweet spot. People throw around the word "unique" pretty loosely, but this property truly does earn that description. Just ask any appraiser I've had look at the property. They can never find comparables to include in their appraisals. That uniqueness is part of what attracted me to the property. Though it is conventional in many respects, it's size and layout do make it stand out – particularly the large two-story great rooms in both units. If I had to choose one attribute of this building that really made me want to acquire it, other than the neighborhood itself, it would be the great rooms. They are not original to the house. They were created by removing the second floor and some of the interior walls in the back part of the building. It's a rather striking effect.
