Nice Place!

This is a comfortable rural setting with easy access to Mars Hill, Asheville, the Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is room to roam onsite, and it is very dog-friendly. The hosts are available, but unobtrusive. We enjoyed our month at the cabin.

Perfect 4th of July Retreat

We always search for a cabin to take our dogs and ourselves away from the fireworks madness of Raleigh. This place was fantastic. First, the only sounds were the cows across the road. And, the cabin was a wow! The owners provided everything you could need; the home is roomy enough for two dogs and three adults; it was spotless (including a brand-new bbq grill) and just perfect for us. Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness, Sandy and Mike!

God’s Country

We absolutely loved our stay at this adorable cabin tucked away on the most beautiful property. We are a party of 5 and brought our 9 month old golden doodle as well. We had plenty of room in the cabin and it was paradise for our pup there. It was the perfect getaway from the noisy, hot city life in Florida. This place was magical. That’s the best way I can explain it. Thank you so much for letting us stay there this past week. We enjoyed everything so much and thank you also for the delicious pumpkin bread! Even my picky husband loved it: )

Very nice folks, great setting, a few maintenance issues

It was a very nice getaway with a nice pastoral location and delightful hike into the woods. Very nice host. We had a nice time so I hate to point out the negatives. But, to be honest the cabin is in need of a few repairs and some TLC and it could be a problem for some. We had a sewer gas problem with bubbling toilets, there's some mold on the living room ceiling. the kitchen faucet sprays out of the stem when turned in full, carpenter ants appear at work behind the sink and a wasps nest on the porch ended up in stings. We also hit it when there was some heavy machinery working which cut into the pastoral nature a bit. But, this overstates it...overall, it was adequate and we had a fine time there.

If you like to hike...

This cozy cabin welcomes you back from hiking all over the property! There are so many hiking trails to choose from, and then you can relax in the cabin or enjoy a fire in the fire pit. The cabin has a well-stocked kitchen, so you can create some delicious meals after your hikes. You can also test your fishing skills with a catch-and-release fishing pond out front.

Fall Getaway

This cabin was charming, the hosts were very thoughtful, providing nice little touches like fresh flowers on the table, homemade pumpkin bread , it was equipped with all the essentials, loved the antique furniture pieces. It was peaceful and just perfect for my trip. The only problem (which was not their fault) I had was no cell service if you have T-Mobile.

Peaceful & Beautiful Private Escape

My husband and I traveled to the beautiful town of Mars Hill from Ramsey, IL with our 2 pit bulls and had the great fortune to stay at this cabin. Mike and Sandy were amazing hosts, being very responsive to all questions and giving us absolute privacy while enjoying our weeklong getaway in their cabin. The cabin itself was super cute and quaint and met all of our needs. The hosts went above and beyond by leaving some delicious pumpkin muffins for us to enjoy upon our arrival. The surrounding property was a dream come true, from the front covered porch where we sat every morning and evening and simply breathed the fresh, clean air to the sprawling pasture in front where my dogs were able to frolic. The pond was an idyllic setting on which to gaze and enjoy a short stroll. The private trail up the mountain to our very own spectacular waterfall was by far the biggest treat we could have imagined. We hiked it with our male, athletic dog several times. Both we, and our dogs, had the best, most relaxing and grounding experience staying here and have already vowed to return to "our" cabin next year for another much needed respite from the hustle and bustle of the real world. Thank you, Mike and Sandy, for providing us with a perfect location for our perfect vacation.

Beautiful rural location.

Warm and cozy, feels like home. Wonderful hosts, our dogs were grateful for the blankets provided specifically for them. The front porch is quite large with a lovely view of cattle on neighboring hillsides. You will see horses, sheep and old barns in this area.

Perfect getaway!

This property was everything I'd hoped for! We spent the entire two days walking the trails and exploring the woods...I think my dog is seriously depressed that we had to leave! The surrounding countryside here is beautiful and we loved the sounds of nature around us. We grilled steaks on the grill, so I didn't use the kitchen much, but it seemed to have the essentials. The house itself was laid out well for the size. I would love to take my granddaughter here for a few days - it was definitely a good deal for the price.

Rustic Cabin

The property was indeed rustic as mentioned in it's description. . Along with our dogs we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We did not use the fire pit, since our dogs came back with ticks, we found it not to be situated to our liking. The location is rather remote, good if you are looking for this. Close enough to the mineral hot springs, which we enjoyed.

Great porch sitting

The location is beautiful. Sitting on the porch or on the deck above the pond is lovely with birds, frogs, deer and cows to watch. Fireflies were fantastic. There’s just the right amount of creek sound. The path up the hill is beautiful. Only when the silo motor across the road was running was it anything less than idyllic. It was a great escape from the noise of July 4th where we live.

About the host

Hosted by Mike or Sandy Stevenson

Host profile image
Your hosts are both Midwesterners—Sandy from Madison, Wisconsin, and Mike from Chicago, Illinois—who lived and worked in the southeast in the 1970s and determined to retire there. Mike is a retired oil company executive who has always had an interest in woodworking, landscaping, and cooking. This property allows him to indulge all of those. Sandy is a retired High School U.S. History teacher and now works part time at the County Visitor Center where she can tell visitors to the area about its rich heritage. In the years we have been here, we have both become deeply imbedded in the community serving on several boards and volunteering frequently to help the schools and the community. We lived in the cabin while building our house elsewhere on the property and have fond memories of its coziness.

Why they chose this property

After living in the suburbs of Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Dallas, the idea of a smaller town was very appealing. Also, having spent the last 20 years in the flat lands of Dallas, it was time for a change of scenery. We were familiar with the area as a result of having been stationed in Atlanta in the early 70s when we used to vacation in the mountains here. As a couple entering retirement, good medical facilities was a requirement (Asheville has one of the top hospitals in the country) as was accessible entertainment (Asheville has 23 performing arts companies, several music venues, round the clock festivals from May to October, plenty of good stores, and more good restaurants than a reasonable person could try in a year). But a bigger piece of property in the mountains was the goal. At the time we bought this property in 1999, land by the acre was a relative bargain compared to other places in the mountains. Western North Carolina has such natural beauty and all four seasons have moderate temperatures and a splendor unique to each one. There is plenty to do within hours of the location not only in western North Carolina, but in Tennessee, Virginia, and South Carolina. You can drive to Hilton Head in five hours, to Washington DC in eight and you can drive to New York City in a day.

What makes this property unique

After looking all around the Asheville area, this piece of property in the country a few miles outside of Mars Hill was the perfect fit. A creek running through it, a mountain out back and some level area to allow for grandchildren to run and for entertaining large groups of people. Since we are year around residents, good roads that would be drivable in the winter were important as was a truly rural environment. We were both tired of suburban living with neighbors a few feet away. The waterfall and the hiking trails were the icing on the cake!
