About this property

Okau Station Smoko Room

If it is a beach holiday that you are looking for then this is the place for you. A comfortable place for your family and friends to enjoy New Zealand’s special wild coastal charm. You could be diving for paua, crayfish or surfcasting, all of this only a short walk away. Castlepoint is only a 10 minute drive away, walk up to the lighthouse or walk up to Castle Rock.
The Smoko Room is attached to our semi-working woolshed. Ping pong table if the weather is not the greatest or just relax with a book. Plenty of spare mattresses in the woolshed for larger groups.
2 bedrooms with open plan living, views of the ocean while lying in bed. Plenty to do for all.
Accommodates 7-9 in the bach but for larger groups plenty of mattresses in the woolshed, which has part-plywood floors.

Amazing little gem
Quite basic but a gem, the manager and staff were very kind and helpful. I wrongly assumed that linen and towels were provided and it wasn't, Kim provided me with some very quickly. Very grateful to have had a slice of paradise.

Peace and quiet in the remoteness
We loved our stay at Mataikona. It was so quiet and peaceful and the view amazing. Our young pup loved it too especially the short walk to the beach. He loved running around in the sand. The only thing I didn’t realise when booking is the bathroom was outside (totally modern but just have to go outside to get to it). Being pregnant and quite cold it was the only downside for me but that is mainly on my part for being pregnant and needing the loo so often. But the location made up for it! There is no wifi (that we found) which to me was perfect as it allowed us to disconnect and fully recharge :)

A beautiful spot just 10 mins from busy castlepoint with the beach just a short stroll away . The accomadation warm and everything you need with a great wood fire to snuggle up to . Wifi and TV available but very quiet and peaceful to just be !

Great views, close to sea
We enjoyed our weekend and the weather was great. Close to the sea but the back needs a good clean. Mattress on the bed was past it and we didnt realise from the reading that you have to step outside onto the porch to get to the bathroom. Hot water was a problem, very hard to get the gas califont to kick in, host said they have been having problems and it is due to be serviced. Overall a it is a bach and it is attached to a woolshed but the site is good.

Great kiwi bach
Our second visit and loved it just as much as or first, the Smoko room is your classic kiwi bach, perfect to get away from it all. Our Greyhound loved the nearly empty beach and we did loads of relaxing.

School holidays by the ocean
We loved our 4 days at the Bach. the fire was amazing to have and kept us warm and toasty day and night. The three grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed the space in the living area and were able to play handball! on the rainy days. even though it blew a gale most days the beach was a source of great adventure and entertainment with drawing in the sand, paddling and jumping on Sandhills sculptured by the wind. Bach was very well resourced with a pantry and frig.freezer to store food that we had bought. The shower was hot and powerful. the local pub does delicious food. We have a few recommendations - a fire smoke alarm, mice traps and a clothes rack to dry towels.

Awesome, easy place with dogs
We were looking for an easy place to be with a couple of rowdy dogs. This place is great as the immediate area was fenced, additionally there were all sorts of options for walking them in paddocks / beach etc. Unfortunately it blew heavy nor-west the whole time we were there, luckily the location is just sufficient to take the edge off the worst of the wind. In October we had to wait an hour or so for the sun to appear over the ridge, I imagine it would be right out in the ocean in front in summertime. Worth noting that a huge amount of sand had built up on the road due to the wind, we got stuck in our 2wd car and had to be towed out (slightly damaging the bottom of our car). Other cars and a logging truck also got stuck. This was eventually cleared by the council after a couple of days, but if it has been windy I would recommend coming prepared with your tow hook etc handy! Thanks for sharing this awesome spot.

Had a great time. It was relaxing and so close to the beach which is so different at low tide Lovely warm fire, hot strong shower. Our dogs loved it. We will be back.

Good place to stay for a long weekend away. Tricky at night going out to the toilet as the steps out of the lounge are near invisible even with outside light on 2 of our group tripped
