About this property

Charming Home in Quaint Winemaking Village

Just steps to the surrounding vineyards and the center of Meursault, Charmelieu (meaning "charming place") is the ideal home while exploring Burgundy. This 200-year old former vineyard workers' house retains original features such as exposed wood beams, interior stone walls & niches, oak and ceramic tile floors, and stone fireplaces. Completely gutted and renovated in 2005 and refurnished & updated in 2012/13, Charmelieu retains it's old world charm with the convenience of modern amenities.

The house has a private walled-in courtyard, two large master bedrooms with private baths, a modern kitchen and large living area. The first master bedroom has a queen-size bed and an alcove with a twin bed. The loft master bedroom has a queen-size bed and a twin bed. Both master bathrooms have full-size showers (one with a bathtub and one with an oversized standing shower) and heated towel racks. There is a half bath in the living room. Central heating and air conditioning has been installed--with remote controls available throughout the house.

The kitchen has been completely renovated and modernized but retains its old-world charm with tile floors, stone walls and a stone fireplace. It includes all new appliances, a large monastery-style oak table inside & a large table in the courtyard, making eating at home convenient and comfortable.

The house is just a five minute walk to the center of Meursault, where a bakery, a butcher, grocery, pharmacy, post office, bank, tourist center and several excellent restaurants are located. Every week the local market is held in the center of town. The town of Meursault and the surrounding vineyards can be explored by foot, while a bigger city, Beaune, is a ten minute drive away. There are numerous historic sites within an easy drive.

As Maison Charmelieu is attached to Maison Shaps, it is possible that we will need access to the cellars located in the courtyard. Whenever possible, we will let our guests know ahead of time when we need to access the property.

We provide our guests with a detailed handbook outlining our suggestions for restaurants and activities in the area.

Spring French Vacation
Beautiful and cozy Meursault traditional home. Has all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. Easy walk into the center of town with access to shops and restaurants. 10-minute drive to Beaune with all its shops and restaurants. Came for the food and wine, and was not disappointed. Our charming host, Hanna, saw to all our needs, and she offered great insights on her own winery, as well as others in the area. Highly recommend this property!

Excellent House, wonderful village
Listing was 100% accurate in every aspect, The house is very near and clean and comfortable; everything maintained as you would do for your own house. Christie is an excellent host, good communications and checked with us on the day we checked in. The kitchen was the best equipped we have every had in a rental house! It was easy to cook nice meals on several nights when we wanted to stay in. Meursault is like a step back in time! Bakery, butcher, fromager, tourist information and a little grocery store a five minute walk. The villagers are very friendly and helpful; try to speak a little French, it helps. There are four or five small restrauants that have very good local food. Air conditioning here is a nice touch, and not very prevalent in Europe. There were days around 90F and it was very nice to have a cool house. We will certainly return!

Wonderful house in a great village
The house was perfect! It is very comfortable and well appointed and maintained. The kitchen is the best outfitted we have had in a rental property; right down to sharp knives! Bakery, butcher, grocery store a five minute walk. Meursault is a great location to explore the Burgundy region from. It is quite and you think you have stepped back in time. Christie is a great host, very good communications and followup. Visit the Hotel du Centre for dinner, very good food and good, friendly service. Try to speak a little French and everyone will be very helpful, it is part of the adventure. I would certainly recommend this property and we will return in 2020 and stay here again. The listing and photographs are accurate.

Perfect!
Love this place. The exposed wood beams and fireplaces add old world charm. The kitchen is first class!!! It is located in the best part of Burgandy. We enjoyed visiting neighboring villages Beaune, Pommard, savigny les beaune, Gevrey-Chambertin, Dijon. ... The aforementioned dogs only barked when someone arrived. It was not an issue and they never kept us awake. I hope to visit again. The patio is a great place to enjoy your coffee and pastries, surrounded by roses , pansies , and hydrangeas accompanied by the chorus of birds. Paradise!!!

Location, location, location
We spent a delightful month in Burgundy, staying in the heart of the Côte d’Or wine region. Our townhouse, “Charmelieu,” located in the picturesque town of Meursault, was a perfectly centralized home base. From here, surrounded by beautiful vineyards and farmlands, we couldn’t wait to take off on our bikes and wind our way along numerous cycling trails that extend along the entire length of the region. The nearby city of Beaune, with it’s beautifully preserved Old Town, is just minutes away by car, and our neighboring villages, including Pommard and Puligny-Montrachet, will set any oenophile’s mouth to watering. The home itself is quiet and very comfortably furnished, boasting a modernized and exceptionally well equipped kitchen, where we happily prepared most of our dinners after a long day of sightseeing. We especially enjoyed a private wine tasting in the owners’ winery and cellar, built right next to the house. A 5-minute stroll brought us to the lovely town center, passing numerous other small wineries along the way. Parking is easily found across the street from the house. The only downside to our stay at Charmelieu, which was considerable but entirely out of our homeowners’ control, was due to the loud, persistent, and undisciplined barking of the neighbors’ dogs across the street. If that nuisance could be addressed, we wouldn’t hesitate to add another star to our review.

Everything we were looking for and more...
We fell in love with this home and Mersault. Everything was exactly as described. The location was perfect for exploring the wonderful wines of the Burgundy area. Although we speak very little French, we found everyone in the area was very friendly and helpful. The house is well furnished for cooking. There is a small grocery, charcuterie, vegetable/fruit store, bakery and wine caves all within walking distance. If you aren't in the mood to cook, you also have restaurants within walking distance. Is was such a lovely and peaceful place. We miss it already.

A piece of heaven in Meursault
We had such a lovely time, the house was just perfect, we enjoyed having wine in the evenings outside, cooking meals together and driving to all the beautiful villages around and of course the wine tasting. Loved walking to get croissants and eggs for breakfast in the beautiful Meursault. We will always have wonderful memories of this vacation. Thank you for the hospitality

Great place
This is a great house in a delightful French town. We try to spend a month in France every winter and we recently spent a month in this house, with guests every week - it worked very well for us. The house is comfortable and perfectly stocked - the living area has new furniture, the kitchen has all the items that one needs to cook, even a knife sharpener for those who have rented a house with a drawer full of dull kitchen knives. Each bedroom has a large bath. It is not a house for those seeking ultimate luxury, but rather for those who want a nice place that works, is in a fun part of France, and is priced accordingly. Another item that we enjoyed was heating/climate control that works. We were able to keep warm on cool days where as we have had houses in France that were always cold. Meursault is a perfect small town with 2 bakers, a butcher shop and a couple of dairy and vegetable stores, and of course all the wine you can drink. Walking in the morning to get the bread and yogurt for breakfast is simple and pleasant. The owners were attentive - several calls and emails checked on us to see if there were any problems, and to offer a wine tasting in the winery attached to the house. There are plenty of restaurants, some in town and some require driving, so pay attention to the French drinking and driving laws. The location is perfect for those who like a little exercise, the vineyards start about 2 blocks from the house, and renting bicycles allowed hours of touring, or there were easy walks for those who enjoyed two feet on the ground. We spent several afternoons in Santenay on a canal path, with a flat bike ride and lots of picnic spots. Biking or walking to Pommard for lunch is easy and pleasant. Several evenings before dinner were spent on the hills above the town, with our guests and a bottle of wine. This is a town where a car is probably necessary. Beaune is only a few minutes north, and we took trips to Dijon and Lyon, along with longer overnight trips to Chamonix and Provence. We flew into Lyon and rented a car and then at the end of the month drove the car back though France and returned it in Paris. We would recommend this house. Rich and Lynn

Perfect idyllic stay - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
The property itself is like stepping into another well loved home but with French authenticity. Not only is it incredibly well presented and cosy, but it contains everything one could possibly need. We couldn't believe the loveliness of the gite and we felt instantly relaxed with many an evening spent drinking wine in the pretty courtyard. Meursault itself is impeccable and certainly for the more discerning traveller. We couldn't fault anything about our stay and can only find praise. Christie and his team were also very accommodating and were prompt in answering our enquiries.

Everything and more!
The home was everything we hoped it would be and more for 4 of us, all adults. Meursault itself was exactly what we wanted - quaint but with shops, good restaurants, and easy access to the surrounding wine area. Beaune was especially enjoyable and only 10 minutes away. The weather could not have been better for our 5 days and we enjoyed the courtyard many times. The quality of the furnishings was outstanding and everything was in order for our arrival. We enjoyed the wine tasting provided by Eva and the wines of Maison Shaps. The owner was incredibly helpful and responsive to our questions before arrival and delivered on everything promised. The information provided in the home was also helpful. We would love to go back some day and highly recommend Charmelieu!

Comfortable, cozy home with great amenities
My wife, two teenage boys, and I had the pleasure of staying at Charmelieu for a week. We used the house as a staging area to explore Burgundy. The location of the house was convenient, right on the edge of Meursault city center. Shops, restaurants, post office, etc... were an easy 400-500 meter walk from the house. We loved Meursault, which was small and quaint, but still had quality grocery stores, bakeries, and wine shops; in addition to a small, but excellent butcher shop - all are staples for a family that likes to prepare meals at home whilst travelling abroad. Everything in the house was as advertised and all of the amenities were top quality. 1) Our visit was in the middle of a heat wave in France. The A/C provided a nice respite from the heat. 2) The main living area provided "comfy seats" (to quote my 14-year son) for everyone! It was really nice having room for all four of us to sit together and relax on comfortable chairs in the evenings. 3) The free Wi-Fi in the house was fast, much faster than our other rental house in Annecy and hotel room in Lyon where we had stayed for the previous two weeks in France. 4) We really appreciated having good laundry facilities at the house after being on the road for two weeks. 5) The kitchen was outstanding and well appointed. The stove was large with high burner capacity, there was a separate wine-fridge in addition to the regular fridge, and there was a good assortment of pots and pans. Another unexpected surprise that came with our rental was a Maison Shaps wine tasting at the house with Eva, who works for the winery. In addition to the tasting, Eva showed us some of the winery's cellars and production areas, which were adjacent to our house. The owners took the time to create an extensive handbook with all of the relevant details about the house. In addition, the handbook included advice on places to explore nearby, some of which we hadn't originally considered when planning for the trip. Our only (minor) nit-picky issue was that a couple of the housekeeping chores were not fully completed prior to our arrival at the house. However, the owners were incredibly responsive and appreciative when we mentioned them. I am 100% confident these details will not be overlooked in the future based on their swift response. We have stayed in multiple rentals houses in France and consider this among our top-2 rental experiences overall. Combines old-world charm with modern amenities. I highly recommend!

The Highlight of our Month in France
My Husband and I had not been to France since after college in the 1970's ... Our week in Meursault and Charmelieu was an incredible way to experience the charm of France and the Burgundy area again. The house was incredible and so authentic yet with modern conveniences!! Plenty of room for the 4 of us! It was harvest and we felt fortunate being able to see the workings of the small winery attached to the house as well as the picking process in the fields. The town was perfect. We found our favorite patisserie, charcuterie and expresso spots. We bbq'd and drank wine at the table outside of the house. We biked from Beaune through the small wine towns! A definite must!! We also visited Rochepot Castle and tasted wine in several wineries in the area. Just a note...during harvest many are closed because they are too busy producing wine but enough of them let us tour their wineries and taste. It was great fun! We will definitely be back to Charmelieu as it was the highlight of our month long trip in Holland and France.

Food & Wine Lovers
We recently spent two wonderful weeks at Charmelieu exploring the Burgundy wine region with dear friends. Meursault is a delightful village with everything you need and the house is extremely well set up for two couples. In the many years we have rented houses in France (as well as the U.S.) we found the beds and pillows to be the best of any place we have rented before. The house is beautifully appointed and well supplied with just about everything we needed to prepare many delicious meals. Within a short drive there are many places to visit and we were able to find some exceptional wine tastings. Christie has assembled a very detailed book to help answer questions about the house along with recommendations for nearby sights and restaurants. If you are TV challenged like we are, Michael was kind enough to call and walk us through the process. It was a fantastic vacation and we would highly recommend it to anyone considering a stay in Burgundy.

Home for 4 adults and two toddlers
First of all, the house is fabulous, as is Meursault. The house worked very well for us and our biggest thanks are for the two cribs. They helped the kids' parents to sleep much better for sure. We gave them the big room of course, so it was perfect for them, cribs, kids and stuff. Our room was lovely and perfect for us as well. We always say that we love it when VRBO's have 1) a comfortable place to sit (amazing how many places don't), 2) reading lights in common rooms and bedrooms, 3) decently sharp kitchen knives and 4) a nice place to eat. Your lovely home had all of those things. We were looking at photos last night and I noticed all of your bottles of wine on the high kitchen counter and laughed. Moving them was the first thing we did. Don't you wonder why? I'm sure that they were put back out of proper order, but I hope they weren't too bad. We certainly enjoyed trying and savoring them, and assume that you got the money we left for it. The town was the perfect size for what we wanted: boulangerie, small grocery store, bar/coffee place and restaurants, although we never made it to try the restaurants. We loved the playground and the walks through the vineyards looking back over the town and the location for day trips is perfect.

Excellent Place to Stay in Burgundy
What a wonderful place to stay in Burgundy. Michael and Christie have set up a beautiful, modern rental in the heart of a centuries old town. If anyone is considering a trip to Burgundy, this is the place to be. The house itself has wonderful amenities such as a large & well equipped custom kitchen, cable, wifi & climate control in each room. You can stay connected or unplug and enjoy small town French life. Meursault is a really quaint little town with bakeries and restaurants all within walking distance from the house. It is very easy to fall into the French country lifestyle. For those looking for a wine adventure tour, this is your place. Within an hour drive you can visit many of the best wineries in the world. Or you can also just stay home and enjoy some of Michael's wine. You really can't go wrong. I'd recommend this place to anyone considering a trip to Burgundy.

Our stay in Meausault
We stayed for a wonderful week in Charmelieu in the village of Meursault.Burgundy with our daughter and young family(2 children). The accommodation for us was excellent with plenty of space for all. The children especially enjoyed sleeping in the alcove off Mum and Dad's bedroom. We were able to prepare meals with the equipment provided with no problems. The small supermarket in the village of Meursault has sufficient for immediate needs while there are larger supermarkets in Beaune and other nearby towns. We had a great holiday. There are many places of interest to visit within easy drives from Meursault.

JUST GREAT !!
My wife and I topped off a 12 day river cruise with a five day stay in Meursault and stayed at Charmeliru. How wonderful !! They accommodations were great. Better than the pictures . There was plenty of room, the place was very clean, it was furnished well and very comfortable. I really like the kitchen as it was big and well equipped. Meursault itself was a storybook village for us. It is charming and quaint and wonderful to wonder through. Also Meursault is centrally locate in Burgundy so all the places we wanted to see were an easy drive. A wine lovers delight ! Did I mention that the food is great in Burgundy. Well after all it is France 1

Wonderful setup for two couples
We were 2 couples travelling together to visit wine regions. The property in Meursault fit our needs perfectly. We used the Wi-Fi extensively, watched a little television, and played cards at the card table. We prepared a couple of full dinners, a few lunches, most breakfasts, and enjoyed the late afternoons sipping wine in the courtyard. Parking was never a problem. We walked into town most days, either to shop (breads, fruits & vegetables) or for dinner. The property was exactly as described and was clean and well maintained. One of the highlights of our week was renting bikes from the campground in Meursault and riding thru the vineyards from town to town. We highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet place in the heart of Burgundy.

About the host

Hosted by Christie Shaps

Host profile image
Michael & Christie Shaps reside in the United States in Virginia where they own a winery. Michael studied winemaking in Beaune in the 1990s. While Michael is a renowned winemaker in Virginia, he returned to Burgundy in 2005 and purchased a house and winery in Meursault, an ideal place for him to call his home-away-from-home and produce Burgundian wines. The Shaps' rent their house, called Charmelieu, and produce wine under the name Maison Shaps.

Michael's daughter Hanna Shaps lives in Beaune and manages the house and winery. She is the point of contact for guests staying at the house and will be the person to greet guests at check in.

Why they chose this property

The Shaps' chose this property because Michael wanted to return to Burgundy where he studied winemaking. Meursault's reputation as a top wine producing village, and it's quintessential French charm made it the ideal place to renovate a house and winery.

What makes this property unique

Charmelieu is a home-away-from-home for the Shaps family. The exposed beams and stone fireplaces add character, while the modern bathrooms and kitchen add convenience and comfort.
