About this property

Peaceful Private Getaway In The Forest

Please read the entire description of the cabin so there aren't any surprises.
Come experience this cute cozy OFF GRID cabin nestled in the woods, surrounded by tall Ohi'a trees with lots of tropical birds to serenade you. Situated at 2000' elevation (which means it might get a bit chilly at times), on a very private, peaceful, gated 20 acre piece of land on the Southern most part of the Big Island. Located half way between Kona and Hilo with 2 grocery stores and a few restaurants nearby, 60 miles from the Hawaii Volcano National Park entrance, 15 miles from the famous Green Sands Beach and Punalu'u the black sand beach where you'll find Hawaiian Hawksbill turtles sunning on the sand.
The Kahuku Unit of the Volcano National Park is right around the corner and is now open to the public. There are beautiful hiking trails, guided or on your own, a gift shop, and information center. Open Thursday - Sunday 8-4
There are a few restaurants nearby for your dining pleasure.
The cabin is half way between the Kona and Hilo airports and takes about an hour and a half to get here from them.
The cabin has one bedroom with a queen size bed, one bathroom with plenty of tankless on demand hot water, a complete kitchen (2 burner stove top - NO OVEN) and is completely self sufficient - solar power, rain water catchment, propane appliances. Linens, dishes, pots and pans, and a coffee press are available for your convenience. Since the power is from the sun, no hair dryer, curling iron, or things of that nature can be used. There's a DVD player with a variety of movies for your entertainment. Most cell phones work here and wi-fi is available.
Babies under 9 months are welcome ( pack and play is available). There is only one bed so there's no accommodations for children older than that.
Smoking permitted outside only. Please no outside guests or visitors or pets.

Perfect Home Base for Exploring the Big Island.
This property is a great home base for exploring the big island. Located half-way between Kailua Kona and Hilo…you can launch your day trip from here. Also, it is close to both the black and green sand beaches…AND the famous Punalu'u Bakery. We stayed here while house hunting. The cabin is very peaceful. It’s The yard/landscaping is from heaven.

Cabin tucked away in beautiful forest
This was an amazing little place for us. So comfortable and Connie was the absolute best host. I don’t have enough great words for the property or host — would come back here in a heartbeat. The kitchen had everything we needed, showers were hot, comfy beds, no issues with the solar power, great deck space, and it was perfectly tucked away from everything but still really close to the things we wanted to do and see. Thank you!

Paradise in the Hawaiian woods
We were looking for a quiet place off the beaten path, and this property more than met the bill. The host Connie is outstanding! She quickly replied to any questions we had. The off the grid cabin is perfect for an out of the way stay. Located on the south side of the island, you are between Hilo and Kona. We so enjoyed the area's black and green sand beaches. Thanks to Connie for sharing her bit of paradise with us.

Great private cabin
We loved the privacy of this nice little cabin and couldn't get enough of all the beautiful tropical flowers in the yard. It felt very private while still being close to amenities, and Connie was great with answering any questions we had. Would definitely stay here again!

Little slice of paradise
We loved everything about our 4-night stay here and only wish we'd had more time. The cabin is cozy, comfortable and provided everything we needed to relax and feel at home. We really enjoyed being off-grid and appreciated being conscious of the amount of electricity and water we used-but certainly didn't lack anything we needed. We cooked light meals in the evening and enjoyed a few movies before bed. The stars at night from the deck were amazing. It does get cool-pack layers. The cabin is situated on the property to allow for total privacy as it's tucked back along the border of HVNP-Kuhuku Unit. The property is an oasis-the variety and mix of plants/trees is delightful. The location is excellent to explore HVNP and there are several beach options just a short drive away. The owner, Connie, provided just the right amount of hands-on when we arrived, to get us situated and provide what info we needed for the cabin and to answer any questions we had. After we checked in we didn't see anyone the entire time we were there but exchanged a text or two with Connie to ask a quick question or send a friendly check in. She really made us feel at home-like we were her invited guests as opposed to just 'renters.' We'd definitely recommend this place to any friends and family looking for an authentic taste of Hawai'i. We certainly hope to be back.

Poor customer service
Terrible service, wall to wall bed is fine if you can pull it out to make it. Ants and traps, termites spiders and webs. Recliner falls in on one side. The other option is a futon that I never bothered to pull out. Didn’t bother to cook the few nights were there. This was the worst customer service I have ever paid for being yelled at then saying she “might have been a bit harsh” Left to go to a nicer place. Then she had the gall to argue with me for almost an hour then texting me saying that not one ant there. If you have the ability to be totally off grid even with out Wi-Fi to do business or any more than 3/4 roll of TPaper and you have to watch the batteries and not let it get down below a certain level and don’t mind bugs it’s ok. But make sure you don’t mind being yelled at or arguing with the owner this is the place to go......

Lovely, quiet, uplifts your spirit
I truly appreciate this lovely quiet cottage...after a day of exploring it was. Nice to come home to . We came in March..weather wasn't always great..but a nice rainy day gave the excuse to slow down and take it easy with good food, movies and books. That in itself is worth everything..for those of us that don't have slow lives! Connie is great..fun to talk to..and very nice about giving you your space..I enjoyed our stay and would definitely come again.

An inspiring, magical place
A peaceful, beautifully landscaped property overlooking the park. Connie's guest cabin is very well appointed, with thoughtful attention to detail. It is off grid, but lacks nothing for an extremely comfortable stay for two people. It is exceptionally clean, with everything you should need. It is very private and well screened from the owner's house. We always felt like we were coming home after a day of adventures. Connie responds quickly to any questions, but otherwise leaves you be. We love the driveway in to the cabin, as it showcases Connie's passion for plants. The birds, the breeze, sunshine and stars are all very present in this place. We were sad to leave and plan to return soon. A very heartfelt thanks, Connie!

Private Tropical Getaway!
My husband and I stayed at Connie's cute cabin for 8 days. We really enjoyed the off-grid privacy of the cabin. Connie is a great host, making herself available as needed, but certainly leaves you to yourself. The 20+ acres she calls home are a lush, topical paradise! If you want to hear the birds in morning, feel the breeze in your hair at dusk, feel the warmth of the sun on your face, and smell the dewy fresh air...here's your spot. We will return!

Quiet Getaway
This home was the perfect quiet getaway we were looking for. The cabin is cozy but lacks nothing. We enjoyed cooking in the kitchen that had all the items we needed. The peaceful setting was exactly what we were looking for. And it was good to see what it's like to live off grid.

Peaceful, Secluded, and Inspirational Wonderland
Connie's cabin is absolutely sublime! My husband and I stayed for a week's vacation and every part of the experience was perfection. Upon booking, Connie reached out immediately to confirm and send detailed directions from Kona. At check in, she was so warm and welcoming, giving a full tour of the cabin's facilities and offering help by just a phone call away if we needed it. We never needed to call because she was so thoroughly informative at the first meeting. She respected our privacy for the rest of our stay and we got to imagine that this little paradise was all ours for the week. The cabin's location in Naalehu is secluded and very private, accessed by a drive through a gorgeous tropical jungle-like garden on the property. As a launching point, it's ideally located for day trips in each direction, whether it be Captain Cook to the northwest, Southpoint and Green Sands Beach to the south, and Volcano National Park, Hilo, and Puna to the east. It's well worth mentioning that the very popular Punalu'u bakery is only 15 minutes away, so it's likely that every morning will begin with a malasada or two :) The piece-de-resistance is, of course, the cabin itself. It really is the perfect get-away and every feature of the space is a representation of the care and mindfulness of its owner. The cabin is entirely off the grid: electricity is solar, water is from a rain catchment, and the stove is propane. Each installation is an example of how excellent and plentiful these resources are. I was amazed at the solar reserves' responsiveness to the sun. Hot water is on-demand and never runs out; I had a wonderfully hot shower every morning. We cooked every dinner on the propane stove and made incredible coffee on the french press. There is no wifi, but cellular services reach there and I was able to occasionally check the internet. There's a TV and DVD player with a wide and really quality selection of movies - we watched "Broken Flowers", "What the Bleep Do We Know", "The Prestige", and "Bruce Almighty"...there's something for everyone. The bed was very comfortable and there were plenty of fresh linens. We spent every night talking on the patio deck which is surrounded by a nice sized grass area (perfect for morning yoga) and a lovely tropical landscape humming with crickets and local birds. I could go on and on but instead I'll say that, above all, I found Connie's cabin inspirational with the spirit of mindfulness and creativity evident in every nook.

About the host

Hosted by Connie Flood

Host profile image
I've lived on the Big Island since 1976 and can't imagine living anywhere else. I'm an avid gardener and this place shows it. I'm also an animal lover and my dogs are my best friends. It's so nice to be able to share this amazing piece of paradise with others.

Why they chose this property

This piece of the island is very special because it's situated in an old forest untouched before I got here. Although it seems like you're in the middle of nowhere when you're here, you're not far from two small towns that have most everything you may need. The property borders a National Park and is not far from the Volcano National Park, the famous Green Sand Beach, and the Black Sand Beach. It's a perfect spot to be if you want to be away from the touristy places in town.

What makes this property unique

This off-grid cabin is completely private and peaceful yet not far from the nearest town.
