About this property

Sugarhouse Lodge—A Secluded Hilltop Retreat

Beautiful 4 bedroom house on 5 secluded acres. Located at the end of a private lane just across the covered bridge from the quaint town of Waitsfield in the heart of the Mad River Valley. Only a few miles from Mad River Glen and Sugarbush ski resorts.

Open floor plan with vaulted ceilings and rustic wood-burning stove. There are two large bedrooms on the top floor, each with its own balcony where you can enjoy your morning coffee and take in the mountain views. The master bedroom suite opens out to the wrap-around deck. The bottom floor is a large bedroom suite with its own recreation area with foosball table.

Slip into an Adirondack chair by the natural stone firepit and watch Scragg Mountain glow in the sunset. Relax in the hammock under the rustle of the tall trees. Hike or mountain bike the private trails maintained by the owners. Go for a stroll to enjoy the wildflowers and pick raspberries and blackberries in the summer. Hop on a bike and coast to the famous covered bridge swimming hole on the Mad River. Perhaps you would like to strap on some snowshoes (or hiking shoes) and take the hiking trails to Wu Ledges, accessible by a short walk from our driveway down the lane to the trail head. The view of the Mad River Valley from Wu Ledges is breathtaking in every season!

Kids will love the swing set with slide and clubhouse and the tree swing! There is even a small sledding hill on the property!

Snowshoes, bikes (with child seat), canoe, river tubes, sleds, and other equipment are available to help you enjoy the outdoors. In warm weather, Blueberry Lake, various swimming holes, waterfalls, and hiking trails are all nearby.

Attending an event at The Round Barn? The house is 0.7 miles away from this amazing venue.

If you are looking for a long weekend away, Sugarhouse Lodge is the way to go. Check-out is flexible, so you can make the most of your stay, and you can still ski the day you leave.

If interested, the town of Stowe is 45 minutes away and Killington is about an hour away.

Excellent! Very well stocked!

We loved this property! The house is really well laid out for family gatherings. We even made waffles in the morning with the waffle maker! Enjoyed doing the Vermont Puzzle! Lots of nice comfortable touches and very clean! Thank you!

Surpassed all of our expectations!

This property was amazing! Even better than the pictures. It was the ideal spot for our family gathering with spaces for everyone to come together, but also have their own privacy. The kitchen was amazing and stocked with everything we could possibly need. We loved the remote quiet location, but it was close enough to run to town for s'mores ingredients for the firepit. Would definitely return and recommend!

Better than ever

We spend a week in Vermont every summer with friends and family, usually in the Waitsfield area, and Sugarhouse Lodge is our favorite rental by far. This was our third stay, and the house is even better now that the lower floor has been renovated with a beautiful lounge featuring a large internet-connected TV. For more details, see last year's review "Another great week in the Mad River Valley"!

Wonderful!

Beautiful home/property! The house was very clean, and well stocked with things you may have forgotten or didn't realize you would need (flash lights, bug spray, sunscreen, etc). Matt and Renee were so kind and easy to communicate with. We enjoyed the fire pit, expansive yard with private trails, and fall leaves. Excellent home/property for our first trip to Vermont!

Another great week in the Mad River Valley

We love this house, and we haven't even used many of its great features, like the grill, firepit, and climbing wall. It has the most spacious tables for dining and tabletop gaming that we have encountered. The kitchen is very well equipped, and the air conditioning is a lifesaver for my older relatives. We discovered three more excellent nearby day hikes this year!

Lovely Country Stay

This is a beautiful home that had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. We stayed for 7 days, and never ran out of fun things to do. It is located down a secluded and forested lane. We lost power for several hours during a thunderstorm due to downed trees and power lines. Our hosts were prepared with several lanterns and flashlights available for us to use.

Visit with my family and young children

I stayed at the property with my parents (who made the reservation) and we loved the property. This would have been true if it was just adults but this was particularly a wonderful fit if you have children! Mine loved playing in the outdoor playhouse, reading all the children's books, and playing with the toys. Having these items made our stay exponentially better and I would absolutely rebook this great place.

Definitely a cut above

We have been visiting Waitsfield almost every summer for years, but this year we needed a bit more space and also A/C for an elderly relative. We loved the exceptionally well stocked kitchen and the large tables for dining and gaming. The location is beautiful and convenient to town. When the washing machine had a glitch, the owners immediately helped us resolve it. This property will be our top choice for next year.

Spacious, clean and well appointed!

Lovely private spot within minutes of Waitsfield. Clean, spacious, comfortable beds with ample extra bedding, fully stocked kitchen, bbq, fire pit, and the list goes on! I loved the instruction binder which just made everything easier for the guest (details on how to operate the tv, or what if the bbq propane tank runs out!) and the fact that the homeowners could easily be reached in the event there was a question or a problem. I contacted them just to tell them how wonderful the place was! I’d go back and stay there ANYDAY!!!

Great Place with Amazing Views

This house is perfect for any family - We had 5 of us at the house but there is plenty of room for more. The house is very clean and Matt and Rene were so nice. We had a big snowstorm and we couldn't leave on the day planned so we were able to coordinate with them to stay an extra night. The house is very clean and organized. There is dishsoap and all the items that you would need staying at a nice home. The best part of the house is the view out of the kitchen window. There was a beautiful full moon when we stayed and some very nice sunsets. I would highly recommend this to any family and in particular to a family bringing parents along as it has an extra ensuite. We look forward to coming back to Matt and Rene's home!

Quiet, secluded, and fully stocked - an amazing find in VT!

Our family of 6 (2 adults, 4 kids ages 9-16) stayed in this home for two nights, and what a fun time it was! We had a long road trip to get there and it was such a relief walking into a fully stocked home where we could relax because everything had been thought of. We have rented many VRBOs over the years but this was by far the most well-equipped. In the kitchen we found a waffle maker, regretted not having brought pancake mix, then were delighted to find an unopened box of it in the cabinet. The kids were in heaven the next morning! Besides the kitchen that had everything (so many pots and pans, containers, baggies, and more) there were high quality brand full size shampoo, conditioner, and body wash bottles in the showers, tissue boxes in most rooms, the.good.toilet.paper and paper towels, sunscreen, bug spray, etc. The were also books, video games, a playset, bikes, a canoe, snow shoes, other outdoor items, and even a guitar (which the kids were careful with as they attempted to play music and serenade us). The house is huge and a great layout and the owners were very communicative and friendly and clearly take good care of the house. We just can't say enough good things about the property (and we are picky!) Thanks for an amazing few nights in Vermont!

Dream getaway in the mountains!

If you are looking for a mountain retreat with all the amenities, look no further. This home has it all! Cozy beds, warm showers, board games (indoor cornhole anyone 😉), amazing scenic views (deer and fox sightings too), mud room is ready for all your ski gear, open floorplan in the living-dining-kitchen rooms so everyone can relax & mingle after a day on the slopes, and a top of the line kitchen stocked with all the necessities for cooking. Waitsfield is just a couple minutes away with plenty of shops, good eats, and of course the new Lawson’s Taproom!!! We can’t wait for our next trip back. The Sugarhouse Lodge has a warm and homey vibe ready to be lived in while you enjoy your Vermont family vacation! Side note: we travelled with an infant and a toddler. The home was already setup with toys, pack n play, booster seat, baby shampoo, kiddie cups/utensils, and books. This was the best bonus! Definitely the sweetener on an already amazing accommodation!

One of the best properties we have ever rented!

We have rented houses for our family vacation for years and this house is by far the best one we have rented. It was so well stocked and had everything we needed--from small things like extra phone chargers and scissors, to everything we needed for cooking and baking, to plenty of dishes and glasses. There were lots of extra pillows, blankets, and towels. There were fun games and puzzles, lots of books and info on the Mad River Valley, and great extras like chairs to take to the river and even a small portable table we could use outside by the fire pit. The house is very comfortable, spacious, and was exceptionally clean. The owners were great, very responsive to our questions. The land around the house is beautiful and filled with trails and paths to explore. Our youngest loved to go explore and found lots of critters. The fire pit was our favorite area. And the Mad River Valley is filled with lots of things to do and is so close to Burlington, Montpelier and Middlebury!! I highly recommend this property.

Fantastic home and setting!

What a wonderful long weekend at this impressive home! Beautiful setting and super clean just as described and pictured. Owners made so many home extras available that it made for a super convenient and fantastic weekend. From the fire-pit to the air conditioning (it was a hot weekend!) to the grill and the nice Wu Ledges hike close by! Couldn’t have asked for anything more. Thanks again Matt and Renee!
