About this property

Historic charm meets modern comfort here at Cedar Ridge. Truly a stone's throw from the shore of Lake Superior, this character-filled cabin was originally hand-built in 1945 by Hjelmer, a Norwegian immigrant. Though Cedar Ridge was fully restored in 2024, the design remains nearly identical to its origins, and you'll notice Hjelmer's preserved craftsmanship throughout your stay.

Highlights of your getaway will include a stunning fireplace crafted from Lake Superior stones; a sunlit kitchen with vaulted ceilings, abundant counter space, and new Smeg appliances; and a sunny cedar deck overlooking the water's edge. This woodsy retreat is the perfect place to slow down, listen to the waves, and enjoy the view. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of some rare wildlife—we've had lynx, wolves, and bears on our doorstep. On a clear dark night, you can see the milky way over the lake, or fall asleep to the sound of the waves.

Though it'll be hard to pull yourself away, there's so much to see nearby. We're 10 minutes from Lutsen and Superior National Golf, 5 minutes from Cascade River hiking trails, 15 minutes from Grand Marais, and 40 minutes from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). Hiking and biking opportunities also abound. Ask us for recommendations for any and all attractions—we're happy to share!

Beautiful location

Relaxing and peaceful, just what we needed to recharge our batteries. Very clean and cozy. So nice to sit by the fireplace and look out towards the Lake with beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Thank you.

Retreat by the lake

Leave the white noise machine at home - you wont need it! The sounds of Lake Superior's waves just outside your window will lull you to sleep! Great location, beautifully appointed cabin, with everything needed for our stay. 2 thumbs up! 👍👍

Fantastic!

My wife and I spent three days at this property to celebrate our 25th anniversary. The owner was warm and friendly, sending recommendations prior to the trip and also a text about the northern lights while we were there. The property was beautiful and spotless. Absolutely fantastic stay!

Private Recharge

Cozy Cabin

Beautiful, cozy cabin right on Lake Superior that met all of our expectations! We spent time hiking the surrounding area that had beautiful waterfalls and trails. Close to Grand Maria’s and Lutsen so able to enjoy restaurants and some shopping. Very private even though cabins close by (no one seemed around).

Peace and tranquility

Pretty cottage on the shore of Lake Superior

The cottage is secluded but not isolated. Not large, just right for two people. The living room /dining area is spacious with windows on three sides. We enjoy the option of letting in fresh out door air. The bedroom is not large but cozy and quiet with windows facing two directions. We slept well. We used the deck on two days of our stay. We were thrilled the weather was right for the outdoor sitting. We had two nights clear enough to gaze at the night sky from the deck. The sound of the waves and the beauty of the wildflowers in the grass is magical. Another thing we liked was searching the treasure trove of books and magazines provided, some about local history, state history and Norwegian history. We visited many of the sites, shopped, ate out, made meals in our cottage, and even got in a day trip to Isle Royale. .

Vintage cabin on Lake Superior

Greatly enjoyed the location and being lake side! It was quite gusty during most of our stay but the cabin stayed warm and cozy and kept us safe. The Adirondack chairs around the fire pit were so comfortable we looked up where we can buy some as we enjoyed a fire late into the night while researching the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Also, our morning coffee time spent on the deck was a highlight. The fireplace worked great and had a good draw with no backdraft. The cabin location was perfect and seemed everything we wanted to explore was close by. There were so many great places to eat (had goose wild rice chowder and a bison elk burger topped with a duck egg at Lutsen Resort), and the North Shore winery was lovely and so friendly. Also we had excellent cellphone and WiFi service in case we needed to be connected, but this cabin makes you want to forget about screen time and grab a board game, build a fire, rest with a good book, cook some comfort food, or just be silent as the powerful waves calm your senses and remind you how insignificant most of your worries are.

Peaceful Lake Superior cabin

We loved every minute of our stay in this peaceful cottage. It was exactly as advertised. Quiet and private setting with amazing lake view and access. We enjoyed both the deck and the yard and fire pit right next to the lake, as well as hanging out on the large flat granite boulders on the shore. We were there for the Moose Mountain marathon and loved having such a relaxing place to come home to afterward. The following days we walked the grounds and picnicked next to Lake Superior at Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center, which is another peaceful and beautiful setting with an interesting history, and hiked both Temperance State Park and the Carlton Peak loop- all of which are within 15-20 mn drive down 61. The bed was comfy, but could use a refresh on the pillows, as they were pretty flat and we ended up doubling up by using the ones off the beds in the loft. The kitchen was well-equipped for making dinner and breakfast for 3 days. The fireplace was nice and in a good location in the living room to sit on the nearby sofa and look out at the lake. Note, we couldn't find any matches or lighter, so bring your own just in case. Many interesting and fun books to read about north shore history. I wouldn't change a thing about the whole weekend. and would definitely love to stay here again. Highly recommend!

Great cabin!

We had an excellent time escaping people and hanging out in nature for the weekend. The cabin was absolutely wonderful and the kitchen was well-stocked with equipment. We will definitely rent the cabin again!
