A Lovely Home and Spacious Property On Meadow's Edge
This beautiful and spacious house on a meadow's edge in Truro is on the boundary of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Equidistant from ocean beaches and Cape Cod Bay in what is unquestionably the Cape's least developed township, the multi acre property features a hard-surfaced tennis court and out-the-door access to woodland hiking trails and rural biking paths. Provincetown with its art galleries, wide range of restaurants, very lively nightlife and access to undeveloped dune lands is seven miles to the north, and the picturesque township of Wellfleet is five miles to the south. Our family is the fourth generation that has ties to the property. We come out every year with enthusiasm to work on the house and look forward to sharing it with others who will enjoy being there as much as we do. Outside the busy summer months, the house and property have been used on a number of occasions as a pleasant and affordable setting for outdoor weddings, as well as at times during the off season for family reunions and other special events. Nearly all of the family groups who come during the core summer weeks between July 4 and Labor Day are people who have ongoing ties to the house, although the house is often used at other times of the year as you will see when looking at the calendar. Because the house is of exceptionally high quality, it's not at all suitable for groups of folks who are looking for someplace that's to be used for large parties. A turnover cleaning fee of $410 is added to the cost of stays.

The listing for this property is accurate. We have stayed in several rentals with our family (6 adults and 4 children) in the Wellfleet/Truro area and this was by far the best. The space is ample enough that we never felt cramped, and with a well maintained tennis court (with pickle ball net and lines), a trail system right behind the house, and beaches within a 5 minute drive or 10 minute bike ride, there was always something to keep everyone occupied. The well equipped kitchen has by far the most storage space/ cabinets that you will ever find in a rental property. Book lovers will appreciate the well developed collection throughout the house. This is a house that has been loved and well maintained by the long time property owners, and their pride in ownership translates to an excellent experience for their renters.
This is an amazing property, in a magical location. It was large enough for 8 adults and 2 children to have space and peace both inside and outside. The tennis court is great, and the hiking trail is right by the house. Bay and ocean beaches are very close. Comfortable beds, very clean, and very responsive owners. And the night sky is dark and filled with stars. We all hope to return next year.
This is a great house for a family vacation. We maxed it out with 10 family members and we never felt cramped; there was plenty of space for everyone to spread out. The tennis court is one of the nicest courts I have ever stepped on and was a big hit with our younger crowd. If you love the Lower Cape you can't beat the location, especially with not having to make the dreaded left turn onto Route 6 thanks to the Pamet Roads intersection. The view across the meadow during the evening was simply amazing. A totally peaceful location.
We have loved Truro for years. This house is on a wonderful cul de sac with lovely gardens and older homes. The house has plenty of space for us. Four adults and three young children. The kitchen was great too cool in and had plenty of equipment. We look forward to returning next summer.
This was our family’s second time in this beautiful home. We love it - for the last two holiday seasons we have taken the family up to relax, walk on the beaches, see the sunsets and sunrises and eat lobster. This house is the perfect base. Ideally located about 15 mins from Provincetown but tucked away right on the border of walking trails at the National Seashore. Hard to beat the locations. Extra bonus this year was a newly installed tennis and pickle ball court. We all played and had so much fun. We hope to be back again soon!!
Ben Read's historic home in Truro is a taste of the old Cape. If you decide to rent, you'll get the whole story of the house, which borders on the protected National Seashore park. After a 22-year hiatus from Truro, my wife and I brought our college age kids and my wife's sister's family for a week of beach, dining, hiking and more. This house turned out to be the perfect home base for those who love the lower Cape. It's quiet and private yet conveniently located to everything, from the Wellfleet Drive In up to Provincetown. The refinished tennis court (with pickle ball stripes) is a wonderful bonus. You won't be disappointed!
Everything was as advertised or better! Daily walks through the woods kept us well exercised. The kitchen is amazingly well equipped with just about any spice or oil you might need. Pots, pans, dishes, utensils - you name it - it was there!
Our post-Christmas visit to this magnificent property could not have been better. We were looking for a quiet haven, close to hiking and beaches but still close enough to P'town to enjoy the food and shopping. This was the perfect property. The house is located right on the edge of the Cape Cod National Park and a beautiful wooded path takes you on glorious walks. We even followed paths from our house to the ocean -- to Ballston Beach -- totally secluded this time of year and magical. The house is beautifully and carefully appointed -- it is wonderfully welcoming. The kitchen is also well equipped so we were able to cook meals for the family. Ben was incredibly prompt with all communications. We hope to return often
We had a fabulous time at Benjamin's house in truro. There was one small hiccup that Benjamin professionally, thoughtfully and immediately took care of. Everyone one in my family ages 2 through 60, had a great time. We recommend Benjamin and his house without hesitation.
We really enjoyed our stay in this gorgeous house. Located in a really quiet part of the Cape, near gorgeous beaches and with a lovely backyard--this place is lovely!
My friends and family thoroughly enjoyed ending our summer at the cape staying in Ben’s house. Equipped with everything we needed including a tennis court we had an amazing time and hope to visit again soon! Highly recommend staying and renting here.
We loved staying in this property in Truro -- there was plenty of space and history imbued throughout home and property. The home has everything you need to enjoy your time on the Cape!
Charming house in a lovely pastoral setting. Nice layout for multiple guests with fully stocked kitchen and grill for those that like to cook and enjoy a meal around the large dining room table. Short walk to Truro Center and close to Provincetown and National Seashore beaches. We had a very enjoyable stay.

About the host
Hosted by Benjamin Read
My wife and I live in Wyoming. I grew up on the east coast and spent every summer on the Cape in a version of this house that had not yet been winterized or modernized. My grandparents owned and lived in the house that's on the other side of the turnaround at the end of Hatch Road. It is at this point my sister and I who share ownership of the house and property.
Why they chose this property
The core areas of the house were originally the schoolhouse for children who grew up in South Truro about two miles away. Built in the 1840s from very sturdy and heavy wooden materials, it was moved to its present location in the early 1900s and at first used as a barn for the owners of an agricultural property. Then in the late 1940s it was remodeled into a summer cottage we always and henceforth called The Barn. Its setting is on the edge of an open meadow that's often used by deer, turkeys and coyotes who one occasionally hears at night. The house and setting have often been described as one of the outer Cape's most beautiful for the feeling of serenity, beauty and warmth felt when there.
What makes this property unique
Truro is by far the least developed of the Cape's townships and to this day retains a welcoming rural character. The Atlantic and bay side beaches require parking permits that are only available to those who own properties and those who are renting or staying in motels within the township. Because of this the beaches are not at all crowded, and they are very beautiful. Various trails behind the house can be used to reach remote stretches of the beaches for those who like to walk and explore one's surroundings.
