Seclusion on a Horse Farm - Million Dollar View - Ride - Hike - Fish - Sauna

Willet Ponds Farm in Todd, NC offers...More than a place to stay: an Appalachian farm experience. The Willet Nest is one of three great houses we rent on the farm. Check out the Old Farmhouse and the Pioneer Homestead, too, to see which suits you best. You'll learn more at WilletPondsFarm.com.

The Willet Nest is all about the view, and the secluded mountain setting that is exactly what the doctor ordered to push your reset button. The modern house, perched on the side of the mountain, offers beautiful views and serves as a quiet, secluded getaway for newlyweds or the entire family.

Just another mountain cabin with a view, you think? No. For starters, this one is surrounded by 1000+ undeveloped acres (including Elk Knob State Park) so you really are secluded in the wild. But as a bonus you get the farm down below, where you are welcome to join me and the farm dog in the daily workings of the farm, taking care of the donkey, the pot-bellied pig, bunches of bunnies, a herd of horses, and a diverse flock of fowl (including peacocks!). Wake to a spectacular sunrise and take the beautiful walk down the mountain to help gather farm fresh eggs. Treat yourself to the simple joys of life and discover why we have an extremely high guest return rate.

The Willet Nest house comes along with a cute mother-in-law sleeping cottage, making it ideal for 2 couples or parents with older children who would think it neat to have a little house of their own. The cottage sleeps four, having a bathroom that separates 2 semi-private bedrooms, one with a deluxe Serta adjustable queen bed, the other with twin bunk beds for the kids. The main house features one large bedroom with a deluxe Nature's Rest queen bed and adjacent master bathroom, plus a queen sized sofa bed for additional sleeping in the living room. This great room and its huge picture window view are large enough for all of you to share, plus there’s a smart tv (dish network) and dvd player for movie night, as well as a gas logs fireplace to add to the cozy charm when you come in from playing in the snow. If you're lucky enough to book in the height of summer you'll enjoy mini split AC in both the house and adjoining cottage.

The light airy kitchen has all the modern appliances and utensils you could want without taking you away from the view or the party. The kitchen doubles as a dining room, so the food need not travel far. Unless you care to eat out on the sun deck that wraps around the cottage—or at the shaded grill-out picnic table convenient to the fire pit.

To reach the Willet Nest you’ll drive right through the heart of the farm (slow down for the chickens!), then travel a half-mile driveway up the mountain through an enchanting forest. From the house you can walk out the front door and onto the 3-mile loop trail over our private mountainside, taking in awesome views of a 100-ft. waterfall cascade and the valley below. After your hike, enjoy smores around the fire pit (firewood provided).

When you’re ready to come back down to the farm, plan on swimming or boating in our pond, and fishing for trout to put dinner on the table (fishing poles provided, stocked trout sold by the pound). You can join us at feeding time to care for animals--a real kid pleaser. Some guests even opt to join in some of the farm chores for fun, be it raking up horse apples in the barn, or helping to harvest our red and golden delicious in the apple orchard.

Willet Ponds Farm is 5 minutes from historic Todd and the scenic New River (tubing, canoeing/kayaking, fishing, & swimming, not to mention easy bike riding along the river), 15 minutes to Elk Knob State Park, and only 20 minutes to either Boone or West Jefferson. From Boone you’ll have easy access to the ski slopes, Tweetsie, shopping in Blowing Rock, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Grandfather Mountain. But be sure to schedule in some down time to just enjoy the profound serenity of the mountains and that million-dollar view.

In addition to our menagerie of animals, we also live on this, our dream farm. We personally manage our rental houses, making them clean and comfortable, in hopes that you’ll feel that you’re staying in a home, not a generic rental cabin. We make sure to take care that you have everything you need, be it a cup of flour or fresh free-range eggs.

Many guests ask if they can ride our horses.
While we are not a riding stable open to the public, we try to accommodate your interests and offer custom trail rides, arena lessons for beginners, and lead line rides for kids. Please let us know in advance if you want to book such horse activity.

Other memorable experience upgrades include renewing in our world-class rustic sauna, and baking in our Old World pizza/bread oven. View our web site for details.

Bed linens, towels, detergents, and soaps are provided as well as a starter roll of paper towels and toilet paper. Ample wood for the fire pit is available at no cost, but you might want to bring charcoal for the grill. Old play shoes or boots might be wise to bring for those who want to spend time in and around the barn.

Please note that the Willet Nest has a 1/2 mile private driveway that winds though the farm and up a steep mountainside. 4WD is required if covered in snow or ice. And it is possible that the top of the driveway could become impassable (walkable only) in the event of a big winter storm.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’ve made room for you here, too.

Favorite Things to Do On the Property:
1) Roast marshmallows at the fire ring.
2) Walk the hiking trail up to the seldom-seen falls.
3) Feed the chickens and gather eggs.
4) Search for treasures hidden around the farm.
5) Fish in the trout pond.
6) Harvest apples and blueberries.
7) Explore the Fairy Forest and build a fairy house.
...the list goes on and on...

Wonderful Experience
Walton is an amazing host, we arrived as guests and left as family. The cottage was perfect: super clean, cozy, and had all the supplies we needed. We couldn't ask for better mountain views from the living room picture window. We had planned for many sightseeing destinations around Boone but there was so much to do and see around the farm there was no reason to leave the property! The scavenger hunt was a fun touch and the kids had a blast exploring the trails as well as getting to know all the farm animals. Our only negative was having to leave and are already planning our next visit.

My mom and I enjoyed our long autumn weekend at the Nest. We spent the majority of our time gazing at the gorgeous view through the picture window in the living area. We relaxed and reveled in nature’s beauty and were sorry to leave. The place was clean and well-appointed. The description online is accurate. Enjoy!

The Escape We Needed
My family's only negative remark about our trip to the Willet Nest was that it was too short. We needed to get away and disconnect for a few days and this property was perfect. Though we only stayed for a few days, our time there was met with plenty of relaxing evenings by a camp fire, the most gorgeous sunrises we've ever seen right from the front porch, hikes around the amazing property, and time genuinely having a great time together and connecting as a family.

Lovely mountain retreat
We enjoyed this property so much! The owners are the sweetest people. We were able to come down in the mornings and help feed their animals. Walton was very patient with my kids, and treated them very kindly. The property itself was clean and well kept up. The views of the mountains were the best you’ll get and from almost every window. My kids loved the separate living quarters. They felt like they had their own privacy. The cabinet sell felt very, very private. We were not ready to leave and plan on making a return trip this summer! Thanks for everything Walton and Betty!

Everything we Hoped for and so Much More
Our family truly feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit Willet's Pond Farm. We stayed in the Willet's Nest. The view is a million dollar view. The property is so peaceful we could actually hear the leaves falling. Our kids loved being able to help on the farm in the mornings. The property is close enough to numerous daytime excursions and grocery stores. Your first climb up the driveway can be a little daunting but I promise the beauty of the climb is worth every bit. The home was clean and adequately supplied. We look forward to returning for another visit!

Beautiful secluded location!
This property offered something for everyone to appreciate. The peacefulness, the views, being secluded... it was so wonderful! We had our 3 daughters with us who are 3, 7, and 18 years old. You're far enough away from everything to enjoy the countryside, yet close enough to enjoy what the local cities/towns have to offer. The property was very clean!!! We do not wear shoes inside at home, and were so pleased that we didn't feel the need to here because the floors/carpet were very well maintained. The "guest house" was perfect for our oldest girls to feel like they were on their own little vacation. We didn't feel the need to lock up anything and it was such a free feeling. The low clouds over the mountains in the morning are just gorgeous, and the air is so fresh. The property owners are wonderful and offer the opportunity to interact with their farm animals. All 3 of our girls LOVED that. We will definitely be booking again and have shared the property information with our friends!!!!

Great private get away weekend
My husband and I enjoyed this secluded spot for our anniversary weekend. The morning views on the high porch were the best we have seen and it really is high up the mountain and secluded. An all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive vehicle is really a must to get up the drive. We walked the property and trails, relaxed and drove to both Boone and West Jefferson on different days for lunch. The kitchen is fully equipped so we ate in for most of our meals. The farm fresh eggs were a great treat. The only negative we found was the fishing was not really what we expected. But all in all it was a great vacation.

Stay in early August 21
Wonderful experience at the Willet Nest property. The view was just breathtaking, whether sitting on the deck or watching out the window of the main house. There are two living areas (the larger house with kitchen, one bedroom, living area and bathroom) and a smaller house next door with a lovely walkway that includes a queen bed and bunk beds along with an additional bath. The drive up Willet Nest is daunting, so be sure to have a vehicle that can climb. However what a way to unwind and enjoy the peace and quiet. The farm was at the bottom with chickens, a pig, horses, peacocks, rabbits, and an adorable dog - Piper. We stopped morning and night just to see the beauty of animals. The house is very clean and has everything you need. You are about 8 miles outside of Boone, however a lovely drive. We hiked at Elk Knob State Park and Grandfather mountain. There is kayaking very close. So much to enjoy here! While wifi was good, cellular service was a bit spotty. Would definitely return and hope to soon!

Fun on the Farm
Our grandchildren loved seeing, feeding and interacting with Penelope, Josephine, and the Little Prince. Piper was such a sweet girl, and our overall favorite. The pond bottom was very mucky, the water was cold, and the animals had to be moved to swim there. My assessment is don’t overpromise on the swimming. The Nest was well equipped and roomy. The AC didn’t quite keep up in the kitchen and living room. One thing I noticed in the annex were some ants very near my side of the bed. Overall very accommodating hosts, interesting property and great fun down on the farm.

Beautiful private mountain house
Willet Nest was perfect for our family of 6! The main house with master was a great getaway for my husband and I, while our 4 kids LOVED having a house to themselves. It was secluded enough that I felt 100% secure having the 4 kids (ages 3-12) stay in a separate building (and our baby monitor reached as well!). There was plenty of space inside and out for play, puzzles and quiet time. The driveway was quite steep so we didn’t attempt it after dark, but the views were incredible and we could see 4th of July fireworks from our porch. The kids loved the farm animals, fairy forest and trails, and it was an easy drive into Boone for shopping and events. We highly recommend and hope to be back soon!

We had a wonderful time helping to feed the chickens, rabbits and Josephine the pig. The donkey was my favorite! Serenity!
In this challenging time we wanted nothing more than to spend much needed time with our daughter and her family. The Willet’s Nest provided us such a special and very memorable experience. The location atop the mountain with unbelievable views, in itself would have satisfied our needs. But the atmosphere of kindness as the Conways addressed any concerns we had, and they patiently allowed our overly excited 2 year grandson to feed and pet all sorts of farm animals. He also experienced his first snow and built his first snowman. We enjoyed sledding right outside our door, hiking to the waterfall and fairy forest, and warming by the fire pit. We were having so much fun we extended an extra day! We will definitely return!!!

About the host

Hosted by Walton Conway

Host profile image
Walton and Betty Conway realized a dream together when they established Willet Ponds Farm in 2005. While Walton grew up in the city dreaming of life in the country and desperately wanting a horse, Betty grew up in the High Country on a small family farm, where her dad kept horses, chickens, rabbits, beagles, goats, and whatever else he took a fancy to. She couldn't ever remember not having a horse to ride, or a bored moment. Though she sold her horse when she was 16 to buy a car, and drove off to Florida, Texas, then Canada, the mountains and country living always had a pull on her. Finally, she gave in and returned to the place that was dearest to her heart so as to give her children the mountain roots and country upbringing that meant so much to her. In 2023 Betty succumbed to cancer, living to the end in the beautiful, peaceful mountains, surrounded by her farm critters great and small. Walton remains thrilled to be able to share their dream with vacationers who would like to sample country life. While caring for horses, pasture, heirloom apple trees and berry bushes, Walton keeps his focus on the farm's most important crop: the next generation.

Why they chose this property

Years ago, back in the 1940’s, the farm got started by brothers Robey and Noah Greer, who together farmed the whole valley with their wives Etta and Lula. The Old Farmhouse belonged to Betty’s great uncle Robey, while Noah built the Pioneer House just a little bit further up the hollow. They made a living raising sheep and cattle, running a saw mill, trapping, bee keeping, wild crafting, and doing whatever else they could to live off their land. Though it left the family and changed hands a number of times, and got divided up over the years, the heart of the farm was still intact and up for sale when we found ourselves looking for the perfect place to settle down, pasture our horses, and raise our children. It was a wonderful feeling to be able to bring the place back into the family, and continue on a tradition and lifestyle that Betty’s family has known for many generations. In 2003 we bought what portion we could of Robey’s half of the farm, and over the course of a couple years were able to build a new farmhouse, then turn the Old Farmhouse into a guest house/vacation rental. There is a wonderful spirit to the place; I suppose that is why everyone falls in love with it and is so eager to return at the next opportunity.
The farm history took a surprising turn in 2013. Noah’s son, Barton, had lived in the run-down Pioneer House up until his death in 2004, at which time Noah’s half of the farm, still intact, fell to Barton’s daughter, Della. Her husband saw big dollar signs in this windfall, and began to turn the farm into—gasp!!--a housing development. During the development process, the economy went bust and he went bankrupt. Our prayers were answered when the large portion of Noah’s farm adjoining our tract was offered for sale in 2013; we jumped at the opportunity to save the old farm and bring the Greer brothers’ farm back together. In 2015 we recovered another 30-acre tract which featured the Willet Nest, the house up high, giving us 3 guest houses.

What makes this property unique

To leave the sounds of the city behind, and soak up the peaceful serenity of the country seasons, is a balm for the soul. The hard work of never-ending farm management is so very much offset by the beauty of the quiet valley that the chores are a pleasure. They are the antidote to sitting in front of a screen from 9 to 5, or listening to newscasts reminding one of the crises of the times. This valley is a refuge offering peace, healing and renewal. The farm animals not only entertain us, but surround us with a connection to beauty and primitive life that heals us as well. It is said that there is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of man. To be near and to touch these amazing beasts is therapeutic and transformative. Come experience that! Children respond to the positive energy of the animals and thrill to be part of something real, something alive. There is magic and wonder in connecting to the earth that is hard to find at Disney Land or amusement parks, and that must be why children beg their parents to bring them back to the farm. Their enthusiasm and your patronage inspires us to keep up this year-round never-ending commitment. We look forward to and count as precious the days we don't have to go anywhere, the days we can spend all day working, playing, and relaxing in our little slice of heaven here at Willet Ponds Farm. Come join us!
