Vintage Beachfront Studio Apartment Right On Charley Young Beach

True Hawaiian style is based on informality and lacks pretense. And that's what you’ll find here, a humble home situated on a spectacular oceanfront parcel of land in a mixed demographic neighborhood. The studio apartment has its own private entrance in back of the main house on the 2nd floor. The building is a weathered wood-frame structure and the interior is nicely decorated with a glass-top dining table and 2 chairs, a relaxed seating area with a colorful area rug, couch, and a very comfortable Queen sized bed with an ensemble of crisp Hotel Collection linens.
There is an ocean view and wood floors throughout, a fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom with bath and beach towels. Amenities include air-conditioning, WI-FI, flat screen T.V., 2 beach chairs, umbrella and 10-quart cooler.

Perfectly accommodates 2 guests but can sleep up to 3 using the couch that folds out into a full bed.

GUEST ACCESS
The beach is a 30 second walk from the apartment. The spacious front lawn facing the ocean is yours to use anytime. Enjoy lounging in the hammock and gazing up at the coconut trees.
The backyard is off limits, private area for owner use, work facility & storage area for our housekeeping and landscape maintenance.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Charley Young Beach Park is well known for it's gentle surf and perfect for swimming, snorkeling, stand up paddle, fishing, and there's miles of sandy beach to walk in either direction.

The studio faces the ocean and runs adjacent to the street below, next to the entrance of a popular beach park so factor in a bit of noise- people, bicycles, mopeds and vehicles. If beach park activity makes you happy, the location just doesn’t get any better than this. Most everything is within walking distance to the beach house- grocery stores, farmers markets, coffee shops, cafes, restaurants and fine dining, shopping, entertainment, and all the accoutrements you can think for a comfortable stay.

And lastly, remember that Hawaii is located in the sub tropics where plants, birds and insects are all a part of the natural environment. We go through great lengths to clean and keep the studio bug free. Still, you may see an occasional critter. If you stay with us, you can help by emptying your trash everyday and not leaving any food out.

Great place near the beach

We enjoyed the location and feeling of this place. No need to put on shoes to walk to the beach.....Priceless! The owner lives close by and is very responsive. we would definately recommend this place to family and friends.

Love this beachfront condo

Always great to stay here. I'm about 2 houses down from where my son lives and this condo is just perfect when I'm in Kihei. Close to everything and the little deck overlooking Charlie Young Beach is the best. This place is my first choice when looking for a place to stay in Kihei.

nice rental after dark a different vibe

This property was clean and comfortable, however while we understand the host have no control of what happens out our windows 4 out of 7 nights the police were outside (entrance of beach) with full lights flashing, then two of the nights there was a vagrant (?) loudly swearing up a storm, seeming talking/yelling at his self. We enjoyed our stay and the beach was lovely but after dark it felt sketchy.

Maui location amazing

This property on Charley Young Beach was a minute to beach. Full kitchen with all you need- small lanai for use of two people which overlooked the water. The owners has use of beach equipment and use of outdoor tables in the back yard close to beach to eat on at anytime. Walking distance to ABC store and other shopping district with restaurants. I’ll consider returning next trip to Hawaii- no doubt.

Nice studio suite

We enjoyed 9 days at this location. It was exactly as advertised...in very close proximity to Charlie Young Beach, could see the ocean & sunsets from the suite, louvered windows brought in plenty of breeze to keep the suite cool but there is an ac unit if you desire, kitchen is well stocked, clean & no bugs, bed was comfortable and linens were clean and nice and the keyless entry was convenient. This home is located at a main access to the beach so as expected there was a fair amount of noise from people and vehicles at all hours of the day (including construction vehicles from a nearby site). We appreciated the use of the BBQ, beach chairs, umbrella, boogie board and cooler. We liked the vintage feel of the suite however the bathroom could use some updates - the shower is very small which we understand can't be changed but the shower head and sink faucet could be swapped out to improve the experience. We also experienced our shower to run out of hot water very quickly. I would consider staying in the unit on the other side of the house next time for a slightly quieter experience.

Seaside beauty

One aspect of this VRBO that I valued was the proximity not only to a great beach, but some tide pools and beach walks. We cooked our own meals a lot but there were several establishments walking distance away.

Fabulous cozy place with a perfect location!

This place turned out to be just perfect for us, supplying us with exactly what was needed...beach towels, beach chairs and an umbrella. Quick walk to the beach and short walks to local stores and restaurants. My only regret...we stayed so busy throughout the week, we never did meet our hosts in person. I was looking forward to that. Anyway, a big thank you to them for providing our perfect vacation get away!

Perfect mother-daughter getaway

I stayed with my 14 year old daughter for 4 nights. Derrick was super welcoming and helpful, and the apartment was CLEAN and well-appointed. Perfect for cheap breakfasts. Right on the beach, easy access and tons of beach “stuff” to borrow. Great advice for fun Maui things to do and a perfect landing pad for us. Loved having a combo lock on the door so not having to worry about keys when snorkeling, hiking, etc. A perfect stay!

Sunset on the beach every day!

We love staying at Derrek & Arlene's property in Maui. The location is perfect to go between other attraction in Maui. St Kihei beaches are the most gentle out of all other beaches we went to in Maui, so it was perfect for a dip whenever you want to in the water, and to watch sunset every single day! We would definitely stay again when we come back and would highly recommend this rental to friends and family.

Steps from the best beach in Kihei

Just as described, vintage but very clean with all the essentials needed for a short stay and the most comfortable bed. Even the pull-out sofa bed was so comfortable I slept on it all week with my son. The best part was being located 30 seconds from the most beautiful beach in Kihei! Whether for a early morning walk, relaxing with a book, boogie boarding, taking in the sunset Charlie Young beach was the perfect spot. Never too crowded and always a chill vibe. We did not have a car, but essentials were all a 10min walk away. The owner is always available, a wealth of information and very accommodating to our families needs. Thank you for a wonderful stay, looking forward to our next visit!

Great location and value!

My fiancé and I stayed here for a week and had a great time! The apartment is within walking distance of restaurants and less than a 5 min walk from the beach. Highly recommend!

What a great stay

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay. Great location, great property host, and a nice cozy place for us to relax. The beach was a very short walk, and was what we were looking for on this trip. The host gave us great tips on where to eat shop and visit while there. Would definitely stay again.

Cozy place with amazing beach access

We split our time in Maui between Kihei and West Maui/Lahaina/Kaanapali. Our time in Kihei was our favorite - we found it to be more fun, less commercial, and everyone was super friendly. Derrick and Arlene's Vintage apartment was cozy and had all we needed for our stay. The apartment was within 2 minutes of Charlie Young Beach, a beach that offers great swimming, a reef area that our daughter enjoyed exploring, and we even saw a sea turtle come ashore to take a rest! We were a ten minutewalk or four minute drive from surfing lessons, Molokini Snorkeling excursions, and a variety of dining! Meeting Derrick and Arlene was also a treat! Derrick offered many great stories and a lot of great recommendations! If we get the opportunity to visit Maui again, we will plan to stay here!

Cutest little surf shack on the island!

Perfect location. Ocean view off mini lanai, this little gem is such a surprise. Warm woodwork and spacious vintage vibes. This is my fave spot of all the places I’ve stayed in Maui. I come here 3 to 4 times a year. I’ll be staying here again!

Rustic but clean. Bed was comfortable. Walking distance to everything you need. The very best thing about this place is location. Right on a great beach. Ocean view. Sound of the ocean at night. Also sounds of the garbage truck but a snall price to pay.

Great!

The stay was fantastic, on an amazing beach and within walking distance to local food/shops/nightlife, but the unit is on the second floor and the hammock in the pictures is a few turns away on the owner's main property. The quality of the interior was good! The louvers/windows were romantic with the wind and cooling and the ocean sounds but on the other hand didn't mitigate other undesirable loud noises (street or party noises).

GREAT location, A+ hospitality, worth every penny!

Our stay at the vintage beachfront studio was such a wonderful a few days! Located directly on the beach, also a short walk to many shops and restaurants in Kihei, plenty of parking available, we also enjoyed the yard, the views, and the hammock!! We didn't meet Arlene (this trip), but we imagine she's every bit as hospitable, friendly and pleasant as Derrick was throughout our stay. By far the most expensive rental of our trip, but the most all around satisfying stay. Mahalo to these kind folks and definitely suggest treating yourself to the Derrick & Arlene special!! :) zero issues. 12/10 would recommend!!

Amazing location and delightful hospitality

We spent 4 lovely days at this place and had a great time. The apartment is clean and well appointed and super convenient to the beach and many other things in Kihei. We (2 adults and a kid) were very comfortable. But even better than the apartment was the warm welcome we received from Arlene and Derrick with whom we shared meals, games and sunsets. We felt like we made new friends and had that great experience while traveling, when you get a good feeling about what life is like living and working in that place. We hope to return soon. Thanks for a great vacation!

Misleading and disappointing

I have stayed at a lot of VRBO properties and this one was disappointing for what I was expecting according to their description and pictures. This is an ocean VIEW property which is different than ocean front. The view from this apartment is mostly the roof of the owners home. You can see the ocean but if you're hoping to potentially see whales or turtles from your room then bring your binoculars. It is also not air-conditioned in which I was perfectly fine with except that you can't leave the windows open at night due to the street noise that is directly below the window. It is indeed located DIRECTLY above/beside the very busy entrance to Charley Young Beach therefore it is very noisy from 5 a.m. (garbage truck beeping) to midnight. Even with the windows closed, there is a lot of street noise. Perhaps their adjacent apartment is quieter but view would not be any better. TINY deck for standing only. If you sat you wouldn't see ocean anyway. The owners view from where they live directly below would be amazing and that is where the pictures of the hammock are taken. You are free to use the hammock but I wasn't comfortable being in their front yard. It also would have been helpful to have beach chairs to take to beach. I didn't feel like they would want sand in the only 2 beach towels brought into the apartment. There are also very, very few amenities. No microwave. No paper towels. Only 1.5 rolls of toilet paper, 1/2 a small box of tissues. No kitchen washcloth. Only one dish towel and only one washcloth. There are also teeny, teeny, tiny bugs that you see occasionally running across the counter tops in kitchen and bathroom. I am not sure if that is common or just this particular vintage apartment. Many of these things can be improved except for the noise and view. I felt we would have been better off staying at a hotel. The bed was the best part. The sheets were very quality and bed was soft. Depending on what time of year you go, you aren't going to see the sunset either. You will have to walk to an opening in the trees. Also, couldn't keep counters clean because no washcloths and then used the one wash cloth that was meant for bathroom to wipe the counters. They were always dirty due to wind coming through windows even when shut because of their age and louver type). I love VRBO's but definitely NOT this one.

Maui ocean view

Amazing and hate to leave, love the ocean so close it has been an amazing journey on this island. First time, not as much to see and do as Kauai where we are headed but good place to rest and take in the beauty.thanks for offering your home and all the extras and the nice clean island flare.

My husband Derrick was born and raised on Maui in this house. He is a Real Estate Agent, an amazing Chef and has been in the hospitality business for many years. I've been on Maui for over 30 years and work as a landscape and interior designer.
We both love to hike & botanize, cook & entertain, farm & garden, and watch T.V. in each others arms.

Why they chose this property

This is the original Charley Young Beach House.
The property has been in the family for generations and is situated at the entrance to one of the best beach parks on Maui, Charley Young Beach, which is named our grandfather, Charley Young, who came to Hawai'i in 1932 as a military reporter to cover the infamous Massie Trial. Settling on Maui, he purchased this oceanfront parcel and built a house for himself and his wife, Betty, and became a well known public figure and reporter for the Maui News and Honolulu Star-Bulletin in the 1940’s and 50’s. The house still stands today, relatively unchanged with all of it’s ‘Old Hawai’i’ charm, telling generations of family history.
