About this property

Private Creekside Escape Close to Grandfather Mtn., Skiing and Town

Very Rustic pioneer old homeplace that's been passed down through 4 generations of the Calhoun Family. This creek side cabin is perfect for a quick getaway with your family and pet. Located just 1mile to town, groceries, restaurants, CVS and more. We have preserved and protected this property in a beautiful hollow filled with laurels, rhododendrons, and native fauna with dirt gravel roads throughout the hollow. There are many streams creeks, and springs that flow throughout the property with a large creek called "Banjo Branch" and waterfall flowing directly in front of the home in the front yard. I encourage our guests to paint a rock and hide it in the creek for others to find while playing in the water or searching for Gold and Gems. We also have walking trails and a scavenger hunt in the guest book and encourage exploring our property.
Our Family home place is over 100 years old built in the late 1890's by my great-grandfather. It is one of the oldest homesteads still in operation in Avery County, NC. It was purchased in 1970 by two brothers from Florida and used as a second vacation home for them until we acquired it back into the Calhoun family in the late nineties. Much of the homes decorations and updates were done by the brothers from Florida who were also close family friends. Since the brothers have passed, my 86 year old father does not want to change it's appearance or update yet so I do the best I can with the cabin in trying to keep it going as it is to honor their memory and my father's wishes. It has 4 bedrooms, sleeps 8 -10 comfortably with (3) Queen beds and (4) Twins. There is (1) full bathroom with a tub shower combo and (1) half bathroom. I provide enough towels and wash cloths for 8 guests and all Linens are provided as well. The cabin has a full Kitchen with electric stove/oven, all utensils, pots, pans, dishes, 10 cup coffee maker, a keurig coffee maker, blender, toaster, microwave, refrigerator but NO AUTOMATIC DISHWASHER. The kitchen has the original sink and dishes must be washed by hand. The Den has ample seating for 6 people with an electric Organ, soap stone wood burning fireplace, Cable Direct TV 100+ channels, WIFI internet service, and board games from old and new eras. The cabin is Heated by the fireplace, electric heaters & baseboard heaters. NO AC, it's Air conditioned by Nature with open windows/screens and fans. (it rarely gets above 70 here). There is a covered front porch with rockers and bench seating to listen to the sounds of the creek & waterfall in the front yard, and a tin roof for the sounds of the rain to lull you to sleep, outdoor fire pit, charcoal grill, quite peaceful and secluded on a gravel road. **** Four Wheel Drive or All Wheel Drive is needed in winter months and snow season (Oct. - Mar.) to get to the cabin and to drive on the roads up here! *** We offer lots of roads and trails for walking, hiking, and exploring. We have made many memories to last a lifetime here while getting back to basics of life and finding the meaning of Self Serenity. If your looking for new and modern this is NOT IT! The cabin is made of wood and bark, covered with a Tin roof, has a 40 year old honey comb bee hive between the old wooden chimney and newer stone chimney and has a woodsy musky odor at times. (We have attempted to get rid of the bees in the chimney now and so far so good! No honeybees now.) Nonetheless, it's still a place of peace and quiet that you can't get anywhere else. I take great pride in making sure that the place stays properly cleaned, sanitized and treated for each guests prior to their arrival. However, with wooden floors, wooden walls, being in the woods, and so forth there is going to be the occasional cobweb, bee, mouse, boomer, moth or bug that sometimes reappear somewhere during your visit. We do have an exterminator that treats the home on a regular monthly schedule. This place is like stepping back in time to a simpler era where phones were not invented, family meant everything, and conversation was essential to our lives. If you ever visited a farm house, or had relatives that grew up in a rural setting you will appreciate this cabin and it's roots. If your a city mouse with champagne dreams and caviar wishes this will disappoint you. I'm sorry.
Almost everyone that visits can't wait to come back and we now have several families that have made this spot their annual tradition for bonding and escaping from the real world. People either love it or they hate it. Everybody is different in their expectations of a vacation rental cabin.
We hope you enjoy it's rich history, unique character, rustic charm and down to earth simplicity as much as we have over the last 100 years and look forward to sharing our little piece of heaven with you too.

Great!
Had a really fun time, everything was as expected for the most part. Would definitely come back! Only thing I could say was I wish they had a light outside near the creek, but no other complaints. Thank you to the owner!

very old cabin
I liked the cabin even though it was small and old I did not like that it only had one bathroom and that it has to put new appliances and put televisions in the rooms because there is only one and wifi was incorrect

Great Stay!
We had a fantastic time. Close to everything - Beech Mtn, Sugar, Hiking trails, grocery store and Grandfather Mountain. It is an older cabin so there are some quirks about it but nothing that impacted our stay in any way. Thank you for having us!

We loved this week at this house. The sounds of nature uninterrupted was great. The house brought back great childhood memories of grandma's and the front porch rockers were great for early morning devotion time.

Oldie but not a goody
The property definitely lives up to its lable as the oldest homestead in Avery County, and it is more than showing its age. If you are a larger individual, older individual or one with balance issues, this IS NOT a place for you do to some serious structural issues. The floors are spongy and slanted (particularly the kitchen) entrance and deck. The tub leaks, the toilet leaked and there is also a critter issue, such as mice which created a huge issue for the ladies of the bunch. Dont plan on venturing too far from the old house, as there is a large list of "don't do's" on the property. The best feature was the flowing creek and quiteness of the area, but that was outweighed by the other issues. The property definity needs a whole lot of TLC to make it safe and habitable.

Rest for the Soul
My family and I really enjoyed our time here. The location is very secluded and calming. My girls enjoyed their water play in the stream directly in front of the house. They also enjoyed fishing in the pond located just down the road. This trip however was mostly for my Dad which is currently struggling with his health. (Heart failure) While physically he couldn't do much adventuring, he really enjoyed sitting on the front porch watching his family find rocks and play in the water. He called this placed "rest for the soul". Mrs. Nancy also came down to see us and is such a sweetheart. These house, Mrs. Nancy, and her family are real and genuine. I'm so thankful for all the experiences we had here. I would highly recommend this place for anyone seeking to find rest for their soul.

Beautiful Location
I can't say enough positive things about the location if you are one looking for the beauty and peacefulness of location. Sitting on the front porch and listening to the creek and waterfall flowing is heavenly. Members of our group enjoyed biking and hiking without ever having to take the car anywhere. The house is a rustic, older, cozy home with lots of its own charm. One should note that because it is rustic and old the floor plan is unique with only one bedroom (it's upstairs) truly having privacy (one door). If one does not use the twin bedroom connected to the master then it can also be considered private other than the bathroom hall door that does not lock, but again, remember this is a rustic and older home. The only thing I scored the house low on was cleanliness for things like the kitchen drainer rack being icky (but it is the color black and most probably wouldn't notice the grime), the fireplace being left with an abundant amount of ashes piled up, and the condition of the bed pillows; when checking out one is required to wash all the towels and to strip the beds of the sheets and put them in a pillowcase, which is when I noticed the very yellowed and stained pillow I had obviously been sleeping on (along with other guest bed pillows); this did make my stomach turn. So, I strongly encourage one to bring one's own pillows. Again, the view is beautiful and peaceful, and the house is rustic, older, cozy, and affordable. Bring your own pillows, bleach the dish drainer rack and tray, and make sure everyone knows that if a bathroom door is shut they shouldn't try to come in to avoid walking in on one another (there are slide locks on two of the doors, but they do not line up evenly to really lock). Please don't take this as predominantly negative; the location and coziness of the house makes up for some challenges and the owners are very friendly. We met Nancy's father Doyle (a man around eighty whose father was raised in the cabin) and he is the epitome of that friendly southern charm. If you decide to embark on this adventure we do believe that overall you will be pleased.

The owner stated the bees had been exterminated. There is an active hive on the cabin & not treated!
Owner stated bee hive was exterminated and bee problem taken care of but that was not the case. We couldn’t figure out how the bees kept getting inside and emailed the owner the first day. She sent her father over the next morning and he made it very clear the bees were protected and couldn’t be treated because they are pollenators. He let us know they had never been exterminated. The owner lied to us!!! We would’ve never booked the cabin had we known a very active bee hive was between the house and chimney. My mother is allergic to bees. So if the canin belongs to the bees then don’t rent it to people and lie! Not happy. Would not recommend.

Best chill getaway
With the recent pandemic and sheltering in place our family needed a quiet, secluded relaxing getaway to refresh, recharge and be together. We had 2 sets of parents , a teen and a tween. (Ou bubble ) We loved staying at Nancy’s place. Rustic, full of history and so enjoyable. We sat around the fire pit day and night visiting and chatting and hiking and just being together. We weren’t looking for fancy, just charm and comfort. We played outside most of the time but the little den was cozy early in the morning. We loved our adventure. Everything was clean and ready for us when we arrived. If you like quaint and unique, full of charm and personality this is the property for you. Everyone said it was the absolute best. We were luck to be able to bring our doodles who played bark and chase and bark and chase all around the property. If you want fancy there are other places but if your focus is on being together and feeling like you have lived a piece of history this is the place. Everyone has asked when we are going back. I hope it’s soon. We didn’t do too much cooking but the house was well equipped with what we needed and we could have done more but we were taking a vacation from that too! Thank you Nancy for sharing Calhoun hollow with us!

We stayed here several times and love getting away from the hustle of life. Plenty of beds for our family and the home and hollow have such a beautiful history. About the host

Hosted by Nancy Calhoun Thomason

Host profile image
We are the Calhoun family. This property was the birthplace of my grandfather, Coye Calhoun. He grew up there the only boy out of 9 children. Starlin Calhoun, my great grandfather, built this house in the late 1890's. His family of brothers all owned this Calhoun hollow that we live in, There is over 200 acres in Calhoun Hollow owned by the siblings of the Calhoun Brothers. The Calhoun's played an important role in our history of the Tweetsie railroad. They helped to build this railroad and worked on it right her in our hollow. In fact my driveway down in front of the Old Toe River was the Tweetsie Railroad bed when it was running. Today the Tweetsie Train can be experienced and enjoyed by familes of all ages in Blowing Rock just miuntes from here at the Tweetsie Railroad Amusement park. We proudly preserve the property and share it with you to enjoy a piece of history and God's country.

Why they chose this property

This home is over 100 years old. It was built by my great grandfather, then passed down to his only son, Coye Calhoun. In 1970 Coye sold the property to two Doctor brothers from Florida. They owned the cabin as their mountain vacation home for years. In the early 1990's my father, Doyle Calhoun had the opportunity to buy it back from the Vildibill's. We have owned it ever since and have turned it into our vacation rental and family fun place to escape reality and rat race of the world. It is rustic and vintage in appearance and furnishings, however, it is also a lot of fun to revert back to your imagination and creativity to keep you entertained while staying here. There is NEWLY ADDED Cable TV, WIFI Internet Service, CD player and an Electric organ for your entertainment. It has a soap stone fireplace that burns real wood, a tin roof, two porches for relaxing on, a creek with waterfall in the front yard that my ancestors used to bathe in before indoor plumbing.
The original out house is on site, original barn, grainery, and smoke house out buildings on the property. Only the cabin is opened to the public for use and enjoyment. We have a Christmas tree farm on the property too that my father has ran since the late 90's. At Thanksgiving and Christmas I like to decorate the cabin accordingly and offer my guests a chance to learn how to make a wreath or pick out a real tree to take home for the holidays.
We are centrally located in the town of Newland just 10 minutes to Grandfather Mountain, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. 25 minutes to Beech Mountain, Boone, Appalachian Ski Resort, ASU, Blowing Rock, Linville Gorge, Linville Caverns and Roan Mountain State Park in TN. Watauga Lake in Butler TN is also a great place for families and fun just 30 minutes from us. The mountains always offer LOTS to do and see. Come experience a magical, memory filled, majestic vacation with us in the heart of God's country Avery county North Carolina.

What makes this property unique

The natural sounds of running water are most relaxing. We have a bon fire pit as well as charcoal grill for cook outs. The house has a musky woodsy smell to it. It is after all an old farm house that lacks nothing including character. Warning unique history and extinction to the cabin: The chimney rock was added on in the early 70's. Since then there has been a honey bee hive develop over the years in the chimney between the rock and the original exterior of the cabin chimney. The honey bees are against the law to kill and would destroy the cabins chimney all together at a very high cost to remove them. Therefore, if you are allergic to bees this is not for you. They usually do not bother you or get inside the house. The Boomer Squirrel is also a resident at the cabin. This is a little red squirrel that is also extinct and lives in the attic of the cabin. Sometimes you will hear them in the walls. They are scared of people so you will not see them just hear them. We do sometimes have mice and spiders in the cabin but try and control them with mice control and frequent exterminating schedules. After all this is a 100 year old house with wooden walls, floors and on a rock foundation in the woods surrounded by nature.
