About this property

Elegant Cottage on 600 Acre Horse & Livestock Farm

Wolftrap Farm features seven vacation rental homes, with the conversion of this 1940's era tenant cottage. Built as on-site housing for a "milker" when the farm was a dairy, this cottage is classic. Our 2015 renovation added a second bath and a screened porch for outdoor dining, with views of three adjoining horse paddocks. Guests have access to our fish-filled ponds, a swimming hole in our creek, endless woodland trails, a "play barn" with pool, ping-pong, Foosball, corn-hole, etc. Great for young families (bring the dog), girls' getaways, multiple generations, wine touring, visits to Monticello, Montpelier and UVA. (NOTE: vrbo classifies the Milker's Cottage as 3 bedrooms because of the sleeper sofa in the living room. It in fact has only two proper bedrooms, plus the sleeper sofa in the living room.)

Newsflash: We have added a Party Patio that can be booked by the hour, where you can enjoy a large Hot Tub, corn hole and other games. If you think you may be interested, pack your bathing suits and contact the owner to reserve your time (90 minutes per day for each day you stay, first come-first served.).

The Milker's Cottage is far from the sounds of traffic, but only a mile off U.S. Highway 15, making for easy excursions for sightseeing and shopping. We are halfway between Gordonsville and Orange, so you have your choice of quaint village or County Seat, each less than 5 miles away. Each has abundant restaurants, quaint shops, museums and all modern amenities.

The drive to Monticello through Keswick and Shadwell is one of the most scenic drives in America. Montpelier is just 15 minutes away, directly across the mountains you see from the front of the farm.

Barboursville, Horton, Keswick and Honna Lee Wineries are all within 20 minutes drive, and Early Mountain is 30 minutes away.

Other Drive Times: Charlottesville (25 minutes); Culpeper (30 minutes); Monticello (35 minutes); Gordonsville or Orange (5 minutes); Montpelier (15 minutes); Richmond (60 minutes); D.C. (100 miles)

But why leave the farm? There is endless hiking on the farm, all the fish you can catch, fire-pit in the back yard (firewood supplied), horses to watch and pet, plenty of peace and quiet, and room for the kids (and the dog) to run.

Milk House Cottage Stay

We enjoyed our very short stay at the Milk House Cottage. The beds were comfortable and it was nice to have two full baths. It was quiet and at night, the sky was so dark, the stars were in clear view. The added bonus was the sun porch with the horses just steps away. We would love to return to this little cottage in the future.

Wolftrap property

This is the second time we've stayed on the Wolftrap property. The property was amazing. The house we stayed in was different from our last stay and it was perfect. Horses just outside the house, wedding by the lake and a reception at the pavilion. Property manager was awesome. Always checking to see if we needed anything and ensuring our stay was meeting our expectations. We would and have recommended you stay at any house on the property as well as events such as a wedding.

Perfect getaway in every way!

Loved our time at the Milker’s Cottage! Had everything we needed and was convenient to everywhere we wanted to go. Loved waking up to our horse neighbors, who were super friendly and enjoyed carrots and quartered apples! The pastures and mountain views were breathtaking and the stars at night were spectacular! Definitely plan to visit again! Our family of 5 and German Shepherd would only change one thing - we would have booked for longer!

Ladies Annual Wine Up and Escape

Myself and 3 great friends booked this cottage for our overnight winery exploration. The cottage was charming and just as described. We enjoyed spending time with our pasture residents. Very convenient to many wineries worth visiting. Have noted as a place we would be happy to stay at again. Also had a tasty breakfast at the Orange Diner.

Weekend of wine and horses

Group of work friends who traveled to Gordonsville for the day to do wine tastings. We stayed at this wonderful cottage which was decorated for the holidays and was very comfortable and cozy! Played games and enjoyed the hot tub. Woke to horse right outside the house, friendly and curious, fun to pet.

Quiet, clean and nice place to rest !

The place is really quiet, clean and relaxing to stay. Easy to find using GPS. Fantastic for our young kids as horses are close to the milker's cottage (about 10meters). You can walk the property looking at even more horses. Beds confortable, large master bathroom, kitchen has every furnitures you need. We advise also Oakland Heights for horse riding.

About the host

Host profile image
I am the nut flying through the air in the picture, with most of my family in the background. My wife and I have bought and renovated many run-down properties over the years, not the least of which was Wolftrap Farm. We live in Virginia Beach as "retirees", but stay busy managing the farm and other family businesses. The farm is a labor of love, and you will see why when you visit. It is glorious to have stewardship of this "little piece of heaven", as so many of our guests have characterized it.

Why they chose this property

In 2003, I was looking for 5 acres and a cabin in the mountains, and I overshot. The farm was a wreck, but the landscape was magnificent. The Charlottesville area is just wonderful.

What makes this property unique

The land itself, with the rolling hills, vast pastures, views of the mountains, hardwood forests, vast scale, streams and ponds, and proximity to modern amenities, is what sold us on this farm. Then we discovered that several of the houses and barns pre-dated the Civil War. It has been pure fun to renovate each of the houses and furnish them for our guests.
