On land once owned by John Rolfe, husband of Pocahontas, the cottage provides endless views of the river and Jamestown Island. The cottage is level with the beach and provides easy beach access. Check the location of waterfront properties carefully on the map. There are only a very few cottages available for vacation rental on the James River with this type of close, level proximity to the beach and river along with easy and quick access to Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, and Busch Gardens. We have made both of our cottages available for vacation rental! See vrbo listing #352993 for description of our cottage next door and also explore our ferryendcottges venue. .

Our cottage is in a wonderful location to enjoy a private beachfront/riverfront escape while being very close to major historic and entertainment sites in every direction including Jamestown, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Busch Gardens, Petersburg, Richmond, Smithfield, Virginia Beach and other locations. Great location for a couple or a small family.

Enjoy swimming, making sand castles, sunning, searching for shells, sharks' teeth and fossils, fishing, kayaking or just doing nothing but sitting and watching the water sights and rhythm of the ferries. Enjoy a relaxing retreat with privacy and delightful water views. .

The cottage provides top of the line updates and comfortable amenities - all within a 15 minute FREE ferry ride of Historic Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg and a lovely short drive to historic Yorktown, site of the end of the Revolutionary War. Our cottage is directly across the river from historic Jamestowne Island, a major historic site where the original 1607 fort, site of the first permanent English colony, is under excavation.

The cottage is the perfect get-a-way with a 38 foot heated and cooled sunporch with three walls of windows to capture views of ships, ferries, tug boats and a menagerie of birds including osprey, eagles, seagulls, cranes, ducks and geese. An occasional dolphin can also be seen if luck is with you. We even provide binoculars for your use.

There are two bedrooms - one with a queen bed and the second with a double size antique maple four poster bed. A twin size day bed on the heated and cooled sunporch provides an additional sleeping space for daytime naps and night time sleeping. Each bedroom has reading lamps, an alarm clock, flashlight, terry robes, and luggage rack. Wide windows provide views of the river or the gardens. We provide comfortable mattresses with luxury bed and bath linens, bath toiletries, terry robes, beach towels, bath and kitchen paper products and basic cooking spices.

The sunporch is a favorite hang-out day and night and has a daybed plus chaise lounge and rocking chair for leisurely day time naps or night time sleeping plus a second dining table for dining with a riverfront view. The sun porch day bed (twin bed) is a favorite sleeping spot at night where you can watch the ferry lights gliding back and forth across the river.

Modern design enthusiasts will fall in love with the fully appointed sleek, white IKEA kitchen, original vintage Danish teak furniture, and eye popping fabric throughout the entire cottage. In fact, every single piece of furniture has been recently reupholstered in vintage inspired designs. Bold color is carried into the bathroom with a European-designed, 50 inch green glass countertop.

We have even extended this mid-century revival through to the lighting. Look up to see funky vintage chrome ball Lightolier track lights that my resourceful daughter found that you will want to take home with you--but please don't! Dine in style with a sputnik, mid-century-inspired chandelier above the Danish teak dining table. From original vintage Laurel mushroom lamps in the bedroom to the one-of-a-kind European industrial orange floor lamp in the living room, every light fixture is vintage and chosen with great care to embody the mid-century spirit.

Other high end touches include Waterworks faucet in the kitchen and towel warmer in the bathroom, Hansgrohe bathroom fixtures, Bosch dishwasher, Toto toilet with soft close toilet seat, usb outlets for your electronics, a flat screen TV with DVD player, free high speed internet, keyless entry lock, luxury linens, terry robes, bath toiletries, and basic cooking spices. The central HVAC system provides heat and air conditioning for year round enjoyment. Exterior security lights and cameras are provided for safety and security.

The kitchen has large windows that look out to both the river and the gardens and offers a built-in oven and microwave, gas cooktop, counter depth refrigerator with ice maker, dishwasher, white granite countertops and small appliances such as a Keurig coffee maker, French Press, coffee grinder, four slot toaster, hand mixer, blender, and crock pot. The kitchen is very well equipped with most cooking essentials including quality cookware and dinnerware.

Basic cooking spices, oil, vinegar, sugar are provided along with a few Keurig K-cups and tea bags.. We also provide paper products including paper towels, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, plastic storage bags, and bathroom paper products . If serious cooking is not on your vacation menu, an endless array of restaurants and take-out deli facilities is available. Information on many "food" and "eating" resources is provided prior to your arrival.

But who wants to stay inside? When you are not sightseeing in Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Petersburg, Smithfield, Busch Gardens, or enjoying the 15 minute ferry ride, this cottage comes equipped with a range of outdoor activities -- even if all you want to do is sit on the beach or the pier with a fishing pole and a book. Strolling the water's edge in the early morning searching for sharks teeth and shells - with a cup of coffee, is a favorite pastime of many guests as is sitting and watching the rhythm of the ferries crossing the river.

Test your skills at finding shark teeth among the shells in the waterline! Included for your enjoyment are two adult size and one child size kayak, life preservers, fishing poles with tackle box basics, beach towels, sand toys, beach chairs and a weber gas grill. The Weber gas grill on the beach, right outside the sun porch door, provides easy beach-front meal preparation. The sun porch also has a handy beverage frig for easy access to whatever libations suit you.

The river is shallow near the shoreline and there are no jellyfish making this a good space for children. The James is a tidal river with two tides per day.

Please note that there are exterior security cameras installed on three sides of the cottage - the entry side facing the parking area, the water side facing the pier and beach, and the east side facing the grassy walkway to the beach.

Please see our other James River cottage right next door at VRBO 352993. You can expect the same great service, spotless cottage, wonderful amenities and absolutely delightful river front setting.

Close by in the county of Surry, guests can find several beautiful historic sites including Smith's (John Smith) Fort Plantation, Bacon's Castle, and the plantation home at Chippokes State Park. The Chippokes Plantation State Park is home to a historic plantation home and historic farm museum along with many outdoor attractions including equestrian trails, a swimming pool, and picnic areas and large waterfront area on the banks of the James River. It also hosts special events throughout the year, providing fun for all the family.

Come and enjoy this turnkey beach cottage. Put in dates to see weekly rate which offers a discount over the nightly rates.

Great Location to Explore the Historical Triangle

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay as we visited Jamestown, Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg. The location was perfect and the proximity of the ferry was phenomenal. We were back at the cottage before all the rest of the cars were off the ferry! The kitchen was well equipped and there were plenty of clean towels. The beds were comfy and the back porch area was amazing to sit, watch the water, and relax. One thing to note is that there is not really anything close in terms of food/stores. If you plan to cook, you may want to stock up before arriving. Thanks again Deena for a great stay.

Relaxing riverfront get-away

This adorable cottage had everything our family needed for a long weekend stay on the James River. The home was spotlessly clean and comfortable. The owner was incredibly helpful and attentive. We highly recommend this vacation cottage!

Ok, but a few unexpected things

The host felt over communicative, as mentiomed on some other reviews. She owns three homes all in a row and was staying at the one next to us at the time. She commented late one evening after watching my husband fish on the pier and sent us a photo of a fish caught the prior weekend by another family. It did feel, after a while and several messages, like we were being watched.

Beautiful cottage!

We had the most amazing stay at the James River Cottage. The location and views were incredible. Our children enjoyed riding the ferry each day as we headed out for our historical adventures. The cottage was incredibly clean and comfortable. The mid century modern decor was beautiful too! Deena was very responsive and helped us with anything we needed. She would update us via text message about weather, restaurants, etc. We loved our stay and hope to visit again soon!

Great cabin for our family of five for colonial adventures!

Tidy and happy cabin on the James River beach. Our 13 yr old boy and 11 yr old girl had to be pried out of the kayaks in order to visit Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. Deena provides extensive recommendations for great places to eat and things to see. Almost like having a personal guide. I am still working on a wonderful chicken pot pie from her recommendation from the nearby Jamestown Pie Company. Will definitely come back.

Absolutely Perfect!

Deena was amazingly helpful and easy to reach at all times. She took the time to get to know my family and made suggestions during our stay (that we loved and enjoyed doing). The cottage was exactly as expected and very well equipped. We all wanted to stay longer and will certainly be back soon. The privacy and comfort that this cottage offers is exactly what we want and need. Thank you Deena! We will be back.

The Greatest

The cottage is located in a very quiet area. Everything you need to cook, grill, kayak and fish are there at your disposal. Just bring your food and fishing essentials and your set. The owner is extremely communicative and response very quickly. This was my second time renting at both properties next to each other. We will be back!

Awesome Host and House

We stayed July 29-Aug 5. Deena is a great host! Answered ALL of our questions. The house is loaded with all of the essentials from q-tips to a salad spinner to beach towels, which is not a very common thing for rentals. Deena even bought a coffeemaker before we arrived because of some questions I was asking about the Keurig (very nice)! The kids swam everyday in the river. There were plenty of catfish to catch, too! The 4 of us stayed comfortably in this house. We would recommend this house to anyone!

Beautiful Cottage

This cottage is beautiful...The love and care that Deena and her daughter showered upon this home when outfitting it for renters is obvious..This was our 2nd time in this cottage and both times we were completely satisfied. We were late arriving and what a joy to be welcomed with fresh flowers everywhere...My 9 year old granddaughter couldnt stop pointing out all of the unique objects that were used in the decorating of the cottage..Deena has made sure that both of her cottages have only the top of the line linens and kitchen supplies..We chose to stay at the cottage and cook our meals..Everything we needed was provided. The views are wonderful..the water is shallow for a long way off shore which is great for young children and even Nana that wants to just float in the wonderful James...wonderful memories were made at this cottage for my family..my only wish would be to have enough money to rent it all summer..but I will settle for a long weekend..Thank you Deena for offering such a beautiful place for us to spend such a special time together. I would also add that Deena is always available if there were ever any problems to arise and always goes above and beyond to make sure all of your needs are met...

Great vacation until...

The owner is over communicative and apparently has recorded footage of her guests. This makes it difficult to relax on vacation when their are signs dictating every move make and recording you and your minor children. Our child fell through the pier due to unsafe boards. Our child was bruised for several days after. When this was brought to the attention of the owner, she stated she had to review their security camera recordings to see what happened. She was more concerned regarding the roots of her Cypress tree and our children being kids, rather than our child's health and well being. When her misdirection of concern was brought to her attention there was silence. There was also a dead frog in one of the rooms upon our check-in. Also, the lawn care man came onto the property while we were trying to relax to water flowers. Also, Deena has a need for a greeter to let us into the home and check on us without warning during our stay. We go on vacation frequently and have never had so many signs telling us to wipe fingerprints off of items, being recorded during a private rental, and having people stop and interrupt our family vacation. We do not recommend renting from Deena.

The Best Hostess and Cottage !

My wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary by taking a vacation to Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown triangle. We reserved Deena’s cottage without hesitation. The condition of the cottage was superlative! It was extremely clean and well appointed. Everything we needed was there and entirely in “like-new” condition. There were pots, pans, silverware, and cutlery with matching dishware. The pillows and beds were cozy and comfy. The central air was quiet and responsive. The private beach and dock were fantastic. The free ferry rides were awesome. Deena’s attention to detail is first-class. She supplied us with fantastic information about the cottage and the nearby attractions. She was exceptionally prompt and exceedingly friendly. A bottle of wine and an anniversary card were waiting for us on the kitchen counter. Her hospitality surpassed our wildest expectations. We highly recommend this family-friendly cottage and its impeccable owner. Spending time at her place “on the James” River was AMAZING.

Just What We Were Looking For!

Bottom line up front: Would we stay here again? ABSOLUTELY! My wife and I wanted to treat my in-laws to a long weekend at a waterfront property, and this cottage was perfect. Before we could even unload the car, my mother-in-law had her shoes off and was blissfully strolling along the private beach and in the water. This cottage is so well sited. It's level with the beach and pier, and you literally walk out the back 4-seasons room and a couple of paces to the beach and pier. This was very ideal for an older couple to enjoy. They were out every sunrise for coffee and duck watching. The cottage itself: very clean, updated and cute. Pretty much anything we needed or wanted (outside our own personal food) was in place when we arrived. For four adults the accommodations were very comfortable. You will not be bored and please don't let the lack of Wi-Fi deter you. Take this time to "unplug" and enjoy the stay. The cottage location is another advantage. The 24-hour, free ferry to cross the James River is just around the corner--literally within walking distance, so getting across the river to the historical Colonial Williamsburg-Jamestown-Yorktown tourist sites was really easy. I only wish we had more time to better explore everything. We could've easily used a full week. The host: Deena is absolutely a joy and made this stay very easy for us! She makes sure you have as much information as possible beforehand to plan and prepare before arrival. She answered questions I didn't think to ask, spot-on recommendation and was always very responsive. OVERALL: great value and a very enjoyable stay. Looking forward to another visit!

Great location w/thoughtful amenities

This cottage is so thoughtfully appointment with everything little thing you may need. Little things that are annoying at most rental places aren't a problem here- all of the towels, sheets, and robes were great quality and smelled freshly laundered (even the towels at the back of the shelf). The beds were so comfortable! Having slippers provided was a nice touch since the tile floors can get cold. First aid kit, bug spray, kayaks, sand castle play set, beach towels... Everything you need! There was also enough room for a pack n play for our 2 year-old in the bedroom. The little riverfront beach was perfect for our two little girls to play in and not have to worry about crowds or rough waters. There are lots of rocks and shells (some sharp- you really do need water shoes) but the girls loved collecting them. I loved watching the sunrises and sunsets on the glassed-in patio and we all loved watching the ferry. It never felt too noisy. On weekend nights we could even see the fireworks at Busch Gardens from the patio (9pm)! We often took the free ferry over to the awesome Kidsburg playground (highly recommend!). It was also really easy to pop over to Jamestown. We only did the glassblowing house (our kids are too young for much more than that). Our kids didn't want to leave. We all had such a great time! Deena was also easy to stay in contact with for any questions and her pre-trip documents contained all the information you could ever need.

Cozy & Quiet Escape

This cottage was a fun and peaceful change of pace and scenery for our small family. The beach was perfect for our younger children with a gentle tide and large tree for built in shade (with a bonus swing!). Ferry and car traffic was no disruption day or night and was an enjoyable novelty for the little ones. A few no-frills but solid places to eat or grab take-out nearby. Owner and fellow caretakers of the property were all kind and helpful. There is a wealth of information to review in advance but just caring for and respecting the home as if it had been passed down in your family for generations is at the heart of all requests. We would love to return again!

About the host

Hosted by Deena Allen

Host profile image
This cottage belonged to my parents who purchased it in 1948. I am fortunate to be its caretaker now along with the cottage next door (vrbo 352993) that was built by my aunt and uncle (literally) from about 1948 to 1950.

Why they chose this property

This cottage was purchased by my parents in 1948 and has been in our family ever since, providing family summertime fun for many years. With modern amenities and fun decor, there is not a better place to spend time on the historic James River. Combine relaxing private waterfront living with close proximity to historic sites of Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Surry, Smithfield, Petersburg and Richmond. I also own the two cottages on either side which also are family owned since 1948.

What makes this property unique

One of only handful of cottages on the James River for short term rental and only one of two (and we have both of them) that are level with the river so all you have to do is walk 10 or 15 feet out your door onto the beach. There is no long flight of steps or high cliff to limit your access to the beach and river. Our cottage combines the best of two vacation worlds: the fun of private waterfront living with the fascination of history. Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, James River Plantations and other historic sites are within a fun 15-30 minute car and/or ferry ride!
