We arrived late at night and the host had left the lights on for us, a nice welcoming note and fresh flowers on the table. We were delighted when we woke up the next morning and were able to see the beautiful view and enjoy the property. It is very quiet and secluded. The house was well stocked and had plenty of space and bedrooms for our large family. the host was very responsive and extremely helpful. We would love to return to enjoy this beautiful location again.
The house is large with lots of bedrooms, great decks and a wonderful view. The kitchen is big with plenty of room to prepare meals and well outfitted with everything that is needed to make meals for a large # of people. Thurstons Lobster pound is close by and has plenty of seating for groups. We had a great time despite the fog that persisted leading up to Hurricane Lee's arrival.
Big and rustic, good for large informal family gatherings
The strength of this home is its size. Beyond all the bedrooms, there is a large living room, large dining room, and a good sized kitchen and the rear deck overlooks the water.
The kitchen and living room both had operating wood stoves which were used to take the chill off in the early morning and evenings. Plenty of wood was provided and this greatly enhanced the ambience of the home.
The kitchen/panty areas are well equipped. The washer and dryer worked well as did the dishwasher and ample soap was provided.
The house was clean when we arrived but it is rustic so it may not feel clean to some. It is an old house with sticky doors, uneven floors, etc. There are 4 baths but two only have clawfoot tubs (no shower) so you only have 2 showers available, one connected to a tub and one tiled shower as part of the first floor master suite. We had a large party so there was occasionally a wait after we went biking/hiking. On the plus, there seemed to be plenty of hot water.
The hosts were very responsive to the few questions we had.
The only other item to note is that when the sun went down the mosquitoes came out. Having been to Maine many times, that is normal but I would certainly factor that into your plans.
Overall, my family would stay here again. It’s size puts it in a class itself and having folks spread out while still having large hang out spaces is very valuable to us.
House was very comfortable and well-equipped for 10 of us. The view was a quintessential Maine vista of firs and sparkling water, with many boats going to and fro. Convenient— we walked 5 minutes to Thurston’s for lobster!
We were able to gather our busy adult children at this beautiful property for an annual Maine vacation. This lovely classic coastal estate afforded a great week of simple recreation, and an excellent base for outdoor adventures on Mt. Desert Island. We highly recommend it!
Great old house with a beautiful view. We were able to relax and enjoy other's company while sitting on the porch overlooking the water and nature, and we played in the yard and on the stone beach and water. Kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals. Chandra was responsive to all our questions and is clearly proud of this house and MDI. Easy to get to everything on MDI, but secluded and private. Being able to walk to Thurston's is great too. Highly recommended for a large family gathering.

Beautiful 7-Bedroom Mansion with Private Beach
As described, this is a 7-bedroom mansion with a private pebble beach. It has a nice mix of old-world features (e.g. 2 wood-burning stoves, tons of beautiful old books) and newer amenities (looking glass windows in beach-facing rooms, renovated deck). It's secluded but only 10 minutes from Southwest Harbor and 35 minutes from Bar Harbor by car, with most of Acadia National Park somewhere in between. As far as I could tell, there is no catch. This place is amazing.

A little slice of heaven!
We just returned from a week at this lovely home in Bernard, Maine. Chandra was wonderful and available for any questions or needs. We had 9 family members and 2 dogs there for the week and we all agreed that this was the nicest vacation we have ever had!!! We had plenty of space to eat together and/or find our own peaceful areas to relax and unwind. We didn't want to leave! The home is spacious with all that we needed and the outdoor scenery is beautiful! Our pups didn't want to leave either...they so enjoyed the yard and exploring the pebble beach...perfect vacation for them and for us! It is a short walk to Thurston's Lobster Pound and an easy drive to all that Acadia has to offer, but quite honestly, we would have been just as happy to stay at the cottage...as it has its own wonderful views of lobster boats, the ocean, and the rocky coasts, as well as opportunities to explore tidal pools! We hope to return again next year!!!

Idyllic family reunion
The web description doesn’t do justice to Grey Rocks! It is a well maintained 1890s mansion with all modern conveniences, in a gorgeous setting, with beautiful flowers in the yard and on the deck. It’s very private, at the end of a long gravel drive, woods on three sides and the rocky beach on the other. The back lawn is great for romping dogs and playing kids, and the full-length back deck is wonderful for picnics and hanging out and looking at the ocean, where you see (and hear) lobster boats going by. The kitchen is well-stocked with pots and pans, the dishwasher and laundry machines work well, and while there are only two showers in the four bathrooms, everything worked. We (ten people, two dogs) loved the house and the location** which made for an idyllic vacation.
** Five minutes walk to Thurston’s Lobster Pound – no parking hassle!

Vacation to remember and talk about forever
We had high hopes before we got to grey rocks but once we got there we just said omg. Went with nine family members and two dogs. I do not know who enjoyed our stay more Us Or the dogs. We could have just stayed at the home all week and had a great time. Pretty much a stone covered beach to ourselves and what views. We did all the touristy things ( Acadia, Bar harbor, Train ride in Ellsworth, hiking, etc. ) but just sitting on the deck watching the dogs swimming, ferry going by, lobster men pulling in there catch would have been good enough for all of us. It was also nice to walk up driveway to Thurstons lobster house. I could go on and on but I hope you get the idea that it was memories for a lifetime. Hoping to go there again.

Amazing Family Vacation and Memories
The arrival date is not accurate, as the calendar would not allow me to go back to the actual date......
This review is longgggg overdue. I just came across the rental listing and realized we never wrote a review.
We stayed at "Grey Rocks" in July of 2005. It was a family vacation for my immediate family (myself, husband and 2 children) as well as my mother, brother and sister, and 2 dogs.
The memories we have of our stay is absolutely priceless. The location is amazing and we all enjoyed the quiet town of Bernard immensely. Eating at Thurston's Lobster Pound, taking ferries to the Cranberry Islands, Day trip to Acadia.....all like a step back in time, Simple pleasures. We played board games and had fires in the fireplace as the nights became chilly. We enjoyed kayaking and just spending time together on the beautiful deck, with the children painting watercolors of the breathtaking view. Thank you so very much for sharing your great home and allowing us to make wonderful memories there, that will never be forgotten. - Eileen C.

About the host
Hosted by Chandra Cousins-Raymond
I have lived in Maine with my family for almost 30 years. Greyrocks has been in my family for almost 60 years. We love the quiet serenity and beauty on the Maine coast.
Why they chose this property
Bernard is quiet, peaceful, and beautiful.
What makes this property unique
This historic house is part of the Tremont Historical society. It has had a total of five owners, my family being the fifth. At one time, Greyrocks was called the Barque Inn, and welcomed guests from ships. A desk, lamp, bell, and lantern in the house were salvaged from a shipwreck on the point near the house. The historic character of the house is well preserved while also being spacious and comfortable.
