About this property

Historic Horseshoe Lake Cottage

This is a quiet lakeside cottage located on a fenced 2 acre lot. The original structure was built in 1927 by J. L. Burgie and has remained in the family ever since. Extensively remodeled in 2000, our lake house is a perfect retreat from the pressures of the city. A private pier (not child proof) and concrete boat ramp provide easy lake access. Even in the winter the sunroom is perfect for reading, writing or just contemplating the sun setting over the lake. For warmer days relax on the screened in porch.

Horseshoe Lake provides excellent fishing, and many kinds of birds and other wildlife may be seen near the house, depending on the time of year, including white pelicans, great egrets, bald eagles, barred owls, orioles, cormorants, and warblers. The Cache River Nat'l Wildlife Refuge is within about an hour's drive.

Great place on horseshoe
The owner was easy to get ahold of with any questions. We used to stay here in college, and 15 years later, still coming back. The new dock is much better than the one it replaced. Great place to stay on horseshoe. Everything as described, and looking forward to the next family trip.

It did the job
It had everything we needed for two guys on a fishing trip. However, bring your own food and plan on cooking as there is nothing in this remote location. Clean, but the outside could be freshened up. The picture is a little misleading. We didn't use the on property boat ramp, it looked real sketchy. The courtesy dock was nice for when lunch time came.

Like a visit to Grandma's house
We loved the house. So much like my Grandma's house. Full of antiques and southern charm. Everything we needed was in the house, even fishing poles. Jeff was a great host and provided easy communication and feedback with questions. We were visiting my son in Memphis and now have a new Favorite place to stay. Just far enough away from the Hussle and bussle of Memphis but close enough to all conveniences.

Needs work
It is a great location and the house is interesting but needs work. Pros: Location Coffee maker was brand new Lots of windows Cons: None of the fireplaces are usable despite fireplace being listed as an amenity. Running the microwave and oven at the same time causes the circuit breaker to trip. The house has a lot of junk in it. They should get rid of the broken or worn out things in the kitchen. I also suggest getting rid for the .22 caliber cartridges from one of the bedrooms.

Moving to Tennessee
Thoroughly enjoyed staying at this unique lake house built in the ‘20’s. Our view of the lake and sunsets are unforgettable and our dogs enjoyed the freedom of their own two acre fenced dog park. I know we will return for a needed getaway after the hustle of a move from Arizona, closing on a new home and the dreaded mountain of boxes to unpack. Thank you for allowing us a week of bliss. Beautiful lake house
The place was amazing. We loved all the antique furniture. The fact that it was located directly on the water was perfect for kayaking. Thanks so much for the wonderful weekend getaway!

Dangerous property
The house is in a great location on the lake. The yard is large but had not been mowed or tended to all summer so when the owner finally cut the grass the day we arrived it needed to be bailed and amongst all of the cut grass was a large dead turtle shell. The bushes and trees surrounding the house need to be trimmed or cut down (dead trees, bushes hide all windows and some doors). The house is unkept outside as well as inside. The exterior doors are hard to open and one handle nearly fell off in my hand. The inside has cobwebs on ceiling and floor, the house was filthy - not sure we had clean sheets or towels, could use a good scrubbing and paint! The floors were eaten by termites and very uneven, the dock walkway was rotten so had to be very cautious when walking to the dock. The lake retaining wall is caving in and created a trench about 12 inches wide and 20 feet long - our dog fell in up to his waist (full grown lab) because it was hidden by the long weeds. It smelled like bug spray or bug bomb in the house so we were afraid to use their dishes, etc. This is the worst VRBO property that we have rented and we've been renting for over 10 years!

Nice
The house was nice but very dirty. The yard was not mowed and for what you paid it should have been better. The dock is very unsafe as one of our guest fell out of the boat trying to get on the dock that moved too easy. Top cap of railing cap off. Very unsafe and needs to be repaired.

It's not the Taj Mahal
Overall, we had a great time. Six adults. Plenty of room for everyone. Kitchen was great. The screened in porch proved to be very pleasant especially in the morning. There were many updates. Probably not the place if you want to spend a lot of time watching TV as the TV's are small and without remotes. But if you're looking for a place to relax and enjoy the company of family/friends check this place out.

Nice house for a group of six.
Our stay here was nice. There is plenty of room for a group of six with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The house could have been more clean as we found mouse droppings in a lot of the drawers and around the house. It also has a musty smell so I would recommend bringing a few candles with you if that will bother you.

Lovely place
We enjoyed our stay. Lovely place. Very much like visiting grandma's house,as the house is an old house with older furnishings. We had what we needed. However, we did find shower was not clean and that is unacceptable, but fortunately cleaning supplies were found and we were able to deal with the situation. We trust that was a one time incident and will be addressed in the future. Owner was easy to work with. Great views of lake, we would love to return with fishing gear. Horseshoe lake is beautiful.

Lovely
I enjoyed the whole feel of the home. It reminded me of my wife’s gradparent’s farm house. The air conditioning, view of the lake, and the home itself combined to make this a lovely stop. Thank you!

Loved the lake views and spacious of the house.
Set up our chairs in a semi circle facing the lake with the fire pit in the middle. Watched the sun set and told old family stories well into the night. Doesn't get any better than that. The house was spacious and had everything we needed for our stay. Ate and drank too much - which means we had a great time. Would definitely do it agian.

Spring Break 2018
As always we enjoyed the cottage on the lake for our annual spring break trip. Water was up so not as many fish as in the past, but we had enough to eat. Enjoy it every time we come.

Great lake house for the entire family
We had a great time at this property. The lake was a lot of fun and the house is large and comfy. While my family was there for some R&R, unfortunately I had to work and the Wi-Fi connection was spotty and slow. Not a big deal, just something I had to deal with.
