About this property

SKI NUBS & BOYNE! Waterfront! OVERLOOKING LAKE MICH! Pool Table, PS2! SUNSETS!

Built in 2006, this cottage style home has 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths and a total living area 2,400 sq. ft. Plenty of room to spread out. This house is truly designed with the family in mind, with separate spaces for the grown-ups and kids alike.

Vintage Mod, Baby! It's luxurious, with a retro feel - sure to evoke a flashback or two. The shag carpeting, custom ceramic tile, custom woodwork and a mix of retro antiques and custom furniture (not to mention a few surprises) will help make this a vacation to remember.

Located in Harbor Springs opposite Lake Michigan on the famous Tunnel of Trees - a top destination for bicyclists. You're close to such vacation spots as Petoskey, Charlevoix, Cross Village, The Inland Water Way and the Straits of Mackinaw.

Atop this 130' bluff, witness panoramic views that will allow you to see all the way to Charlevoix and on some days even Beaver Island! Enjoy filtered views from the home as well as completely un-obstructed views from the meandering bluffside staircase with secluded sun deck that leads to the very private frontage on Lake Michigan. *Reminiscent of America's Pacific Northwest, there are times you can walk for miles (when conditions allow as it is rocky now, but will be sandy again some day) up and down without seeing a single person!*

*Lake levels and shore conditions are constently changing. There is no guarantee what the shoreline will look like. In the summer of 2019 it had gone from sandy with a few rocks to much higher water levels and no sand at all on shore. However once in the water there is a band of rocks then all sand. We recommend bringing water shoes to walk over the rocks to get to the sandy bottom, it will be worth it!

- For our winter guests we recommend bringing an all-wheel-drive vehicle or at the very least a front wheel drive with good snow tires.

---- Also we provide a starter supply of paper/soap products which should be enough for typical 3 night stay, for a smaller group of 2 people. For a complete list of "what is provided" and "things to bring", check out "Using the property”, on your “My Trip” page.

- Fireplace available Thanksgiving - April 1st.

Wonderful Stay!
Our family had an amazing time at this unique and comfortable rental in Harbor Springs. The house is right on the Tunnel of Trees, and the views of Lake Michigan were absolutely breathtaking. The retro 1960s vibe of the decor, with vintage records, games, and TV shows, made it feel like a trip back in time, but with all the modern comforts. The house was spotless, with plenty of space—4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms—plus a huge kitchen that made meals a breeze. We loved walking along the Tunnel of Trees and the walks along the shore were so, SO peaceful. Sleeping here was a dream—the beds were super comfy, and the quiet surroundings were perfect for relaxing. It was also a great location for exploring. We enjoyed dining at local spots that were recommended in the ‘info’ book at the house and took a scenic drive to Mackinaw City. This place was the perfect getaway, and we’ll definitely be back!

Wonderful Views ~ Amazing Location!
We had a wonderful time during our stay and the colors in the tunnel of trees was beautiful. We had some minor issues when we arrived - no trash bag in the trash container in the kitchen and the trash bag box was empty. The toilet seat in the half bath was cracked and broken. I texted the issues with the host. The next day when we returned from a day out we found the toilet seat had been replaced, but the trash bags they left were for the small trash bins in the bathrooms - no big deal - we managed to snag a couple from a restaurant we ate at. We were a bit disappointed the deck hadn't been cleaned up - the table was dirty and their were leaves and ashes covering most of it - we never went out on it to enjoy the view. The house is spacious and the kitchen is large, but the interior is starting to show some age and living room furniture and downstairs furniture (futons) are not comfortable to sit on - exception is the large chaise in the upstairs LR. The bed upstairs and the main level are very hard and no one had a good night sleep the 3 nights we were there. The bunk beds were a bit better, but still not comfortable. The upstairs bathroom door won't stay open - it kept bumping me when I was at the vanity. The bathroom down stairs is large but there really isn't any space to put your toiletries. We couldn't get the stereo to work. No laundry soap was available. The pool sticks need tips. I do want to say the host was VERY nice and kept in contact with us.

A Beautiful Home in a stunning location
This property is beautifully decorated and maintained. We enjoyed the art, the comfort of the beds, the view, the silence in the woods, the Lake of course, and the proximity to Harbor Springs and Petoskey. The steps to the beach were a daily challenge, but well maintained, and the deck midway down was a big plus. We rode our bikes through the stunning tunnel of trees daily for our morning coffee at the Trillium coffee shop. It is such a pleasure to stay in this beautiful home with first-class amenities, nestled in the woods on Lake Michigan.

Very nice property. Location was across from Lake Michigan and had excellent views. House was well cleaned and spacious. Plenty of room for our group plus one dog. Only minor issues was the house sleeps 14 but they only provide enough toilet paper and paper towel for 2 guests for 3 nights.

Cozy Home with the BEST views of Lake Michigan
Our family (9 people and one small dog) spent a week at this beautiful home. We had a fantastic time. Across the street is access to the most amazing views of Lake Michigan. Roughly 200 steps down is a private beach to enjoy the water and waves. It feels like you are at the ocean. As is the case with nature, sometimes it was very rocky and somedays there was more sand. Water shoes would be very helpful. Halfway down is a great deck to enjoy your morning coffee or catch the sunset. The home itself is nicely decorated and well equipped. Plenty of sleeping options. Love that the couches are comfortable futons. The lower level basement is spacious and a great area for the teens to play pool and ping pong. The kitchen is large with plenty of prep space and seating. If you do not have physical limitations walking up and down many steps, this is the perfect place to experience the natural beauty of Lake Michigan.

Retro fun + nature at its finest
My family loved staying here. The kids (and dad) enjoyed the old PS2, pool table, and old time movies. We loved exploring the winter beach. You can walk for miles on the beach. Running down M119 in the mornings was serene and beautiful. Proximity to the ski mountains was great!

Early Autumn Retreat
We were looking for a place to reflect and remember a family member lost to covid last year. The house and location were perfect! Everything was serene and beautiful. It was very easy to get to and from several tourist spots. Also was a good spot for those that wanted to stay "home". Kitchen and dining room were plenty big and spacious. The view from the livingroom and deck are spectacular. Beach is down a very long staircase, but very much worth going down! Beautiful platform along the way to enjoy sunsets without having to go the full distance. A note on the beds... There are 2 rooms with queen size beds, and 2 rooms, on the lowest level, with bunk beds. The futons are plenty comfortable with bedding and pillows available. However, the futons are all in community spaces. Plan on sharing space. The slight draw back is that it's limited privacy for people used to having individual rooms. Also have to consider early risers v night owls. It is not at all a deal breaker, just consideration if booking with multiple families or people who may have different expectations. Everyone, including the youngest kids, asked to come back again next year or to make a trip in the summer! It easily is an annual lake house vacation destination!

Why they chose this property

The Surf Cottage is on 4 acres of private land with 150' Lake Michigan frontage. The 'Tunnel of Trees' that our home is on was voted most picturesque road in Michigan by Travelocity.

What makes this property unique

The 1960's decor. We tried to make the home look and feel like a surfing cottage from the movies of that era.
