Highly reccomended

Beautiful location, very nice house. Can easily accommodate 10 adults or 10 adults + 2 kids. Host Steve is from LA, California and we couldn't ask for a better host! Steve did shopping for us prior to our arrival, again drove us to Walmart for more shopping! He also negotiated discounts for us at many attractions in Costa Rica. The house is very neat and clean, the surroundings are excellent for a relaxing vacation. Our kids and Steve caught trouts from his fish farm and Steve even grilled the fish for us! We had an excellent experience overall and would love to vacation with him again! Overall I highly recommend this house to any group of 8 or more.

Troutalicious and Family Fun

Our intent for our vacation was to spend time with family. The 'trout house' allowed us to do just that. We were so comfortable the entire trip, from the soooooo soft beds to the everything you could think of appliances, the house gave us a home and with it a most gracious host. Steve is such an asset to the vacation home. He knows where to go, gets you there, speaks the language, is well mannered, upbeat, and positive in a professional way. His many contacts for everything were also very handy at various times during our stay. This home is also great for children and small children as there is plenty to do in and around the house itself from fishing to the multi station flatscreen TVs. One of my favorites was walking with the kids to the local mini market and buying them homemade ice creams from the fresh milk in the zone. Then we would go to the little playground and eat it. The family that owns the store was also very friendly and kind and even gave me an herb to make into tea when I was feeling bad, which cured me right up! They sell homemade breads, fresh cows milk, the local sour cream, and many other staples. The area is quite lovely. Very nice also was the warm fire and fireplace and the firewood was always restocked. I highly recommend the home, Steve, and leaving it up to him for transport and guide!

Mountain retreat and trout ponds.......Steve..........rental 785954

We were very pleasantly surprised at the whole vacation down there in Costa Rica! From picked up at airport (no car rental needed) and driven thru the city of San Jose north into the high country overlooking the city and valley. When arriving at this beautiful mountain home we all gasped and started grinning and didn't stop for our 12 days there! Made for a big family, all furnished with more than you need, fireplaces in the bedrooms............it was just perfect for our family gathering. It overlooks trout ponds and beautiful trees. You also get a fantastic host who I think loves taking care of whatever needs or any problem you run into. Steve kept us in firewood and cooked us some great trout dinners, took us to town to shop whenever we wanted and on and on..........answered any questions, pointed out birds and plants,....he goes with the house and adds a real value to the price of the package. I feel like we got way more than we expected or paid for! I am sure to go back again as the years go by. Every restaurant we went to was great also and a potpourii store a short walk away. We were together as a family with all four kids and all four grandkids and they all had a wonderful time.............Thanks Steve!...........you are the perfect host!!

Perfect home in the mountains to relax and un-wind

Steve was the perfect host! He arranged transportation to his beautiful house in the mountains in Costa Rica. The weather was cool but pleasant. We had a fire in the fireplace every evening which kept us warm and toasty. Steve helped us fish in the property's trout pond and then grilled the fish for dinner. Delicious! This home was really like home away from home. The beds were so comfortable and everything that we needed was there. If we needed anything additionally, Steve supplied it for us or provided transportation so we could get it. We had three small children so we did not go on many outings, although we could have easily. Steve's house is really a mountain retreat when one can un-wind and enjoy the family. We took daily walks and enjoyed the mountain air. I highly recommend taking a vacation to this mountain retreat.

Paradise

This home is even more beautiful than the pictures! Steve (the owner) was an exceptional host. My husband, I and another couple rented this home for a week in April. There was plenty of room and the accommodations were very comfortable. The home was equipped with everything we needed to enjoy cooking meals at home. We especially enjoyed dusk on the back porch watching the fire flys and snuggling up next to the fireplace for the evening. We loved fishing for trout with our Costa Rican fishing poles and the special batter Maritza made to cook them in. Steve was nice enough to clean the trout and even helped us cook it! There was plenty to do in this area. We especially loved the zip lining, La Paz Waterfall and hiking to the top of Barva volcano. We can't thank you enough Steve for opening up your home to us and all of your help making this a perfect vacation!

I stayed at this beautiful retreat for 11 days with my family of 5 in 2015. The surroundings of natural landscaping are breath taking. Steve and Maritza are wonderful hosts and very accommodating. Went zip lining and saw the children's museum in San Jose a must see. The trout fishing was a great experience. Fish, catch and Steve and Maritza will cook for you. The stay and accommodations could not have been better. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

This is paradise!!!

We were so lucky to find this place!!! Maritza was so kind and helpful that we will never forget this. Without any doubt we will go back next year to this place. We ate trout that we "got out the river" ourselves.. Unbelievable but true. We live in Holland and we have trout in our country also but not same taste. Steve was so kind to have us made some calls to Holland without us to pay. GREAT and thank you Steve and Maritza for having an unforgettable time. See you next year for sure.

Home Away from Home!

This is a great place to stay in the mountains! We are a family of 4 + my parents. Our kids are 15 and 12. The place was spacious & comfortable enough for all. Steve, the owner was great from the moment we asked about the house until the very end. He was very responsive and helped us throughout our stay. This was a 3 night stop on the way to the beach which was another 3 nights. The location was about 30 minutes from the airport & an easy drive to many sights. Definitely stay here if going to San Jose, Costa Rica area. By the way, this house in the mountains is a pleasant temperature vs. the city which can be very hot.

Relaxation in the mountains!

We have been here twice now and have not regretted it|! The property is high up on Barva Mountain and is surrounded by nature. The house is fully modern and clean, with a large and modern kitchen, fireplace and internet. It has plenty of room for a large family. For just two people, it is almost like being spoiled! Outside, the well tended gardens contain a Trout pond with thousands of little fish and also a small fresh water stream. We very much enjoyed our time at this home and we look forward to coming back in the future!

Absolutely Loved Our Stay!

The house and property are exactly as shown and it's very clean. The weather was perfect so we had several picnics outside because the property was so beautiful. We have two kids and they really enjoyed trout fishing right in the backyard. The owner cooked the fish outside for us and showed us how to make fresh tortillas! Best fish tacos on the planet! The owner was very helpful in arranging transportation to and from the airport and he provided very specific information on how to get to the nearby volcanos, national parks and zip lining as well as what to expect in terms of weather, clothing, what to bring on our excursions, etc. He also recommended a restaurant on the way to zip lining which had great food and you can take a short hike down a trail to an amazing river. Great little spot! We definitely will go back and explore some more. Best Trip Ever!! We highly recommend it!

Host profile image
Hello Everyone,
My name is Steve Sklar and I'm the owner of this gorgeous property. I'm originally from Los Angeles, California and currently live with my wife and son in this area of Costa Rica. Although we enjoyed the tropics of Hawaii for many years, we now call Costa Rica our home. I/we enjoy giving our guests the best time possible memories in this special home.

Why they chose this property

The beauty this house has to offer is priceless. Over the years, we have constantly been asked by local residents to come to our property to enjoy the picturesque park-like setting. Some people eagerly wanted to camp here for the night. Our house is known for its peaceful setting. The moment we saw this home, we bought it and knew we wanted to have it for generations to come and for guests to enjoy.

What makes this property unique

Unlike other vacation homes, hotels, and hostels, this home offers you an inner peace and a get way from it all environment.
